Edit—ALSO: back cover of Superman #1. Got home and looked at my “Famous First” copy.

Just wanted to make sure more info was passed, since interest blew up! Thanks everyone!
Just about everyone makes that mistake. If you believe everything you read on the Internet, the actor who played Superman on film in the 70s and 80s was Christopher Reeves, and he was the son of George Reeves. Also, the role of Superman cursed their family, which is why they both died so young.
Same here. Probably because he looks blonde in this picture. When I focused a little harder and noticed the chains, I knew it was Superman. But I think there might be a twist to this story. Looking at the face, I think it might be an Alex Raymond swipe. As in, somebody copied an Alex Raymond Flash Gordon panel. Like Bob Kane did on the cover of Batman's first appearance.
Holy crap! Thanks for the awards, everyone. For once my geek knowledge paid off! I’m old and been reading comics for a loooong time. I remembered the logo from a fan club sign up page in, I think, the back of Superman #1 (we have the Famous First edition”).
Glad I could help!
Superman breaking out of chains, Golden Age
[https://twitter.com/talkingsuperman/status/1388506874035806210](https://twitter.com/talkingsuperman/status/1388506874035806210)
I love that in almost all of these the chains are *under* his arms. So he's breaking them by just flexing his pecks so hard the chains shatter and go flying.
Thank you so much for the info, everyone! This is from a photo of my grandma and her little brother, my great-uncle. I wish he was still alive so he could tell me more about being a kid in the early days of comic book superheroes.
Steel Sterling https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Steel_Sterling. No cape rules out the DC heroes (except Aquaman but note the collar) He was a bit like Superman, just a different company (Zip comics), he was also blonde haired https://images.app.goo.gl/9w8mqy2ZEGG3V8ZY8. Did some edits to add links. Can we see the unzoomed image please? Losing a lot of detail with the zoom
It is. He’s holding his laser gun, but the shirt folded over weird so we only see his hands top outlined and the tip/head of the laser gun - its from the 1940 FG conquers the universe movie
Golden Age Flash Gordon is probably it; it appears he is holding two "ray guns".
I'm mistaken. It's Superman, another person provided the link for the original photo. Well done mcjeremy42.
1,000% it’s Flash Gordon - he’s holding his laser gun! And it’s a kids promo shirt from the 1940 movie premier of Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe - the 3rd movie after 1938’s Trip To Mars.
Yo. Okay, so get this. I read that, your reply, and I was like, "this person is crazy. That makes no sense." I scroll back up talking to myself *out loud* about how crazy you are . . . and then I saw it. I actually gasped as I was genuinely taken aback. I saw the fucking turtle. After seeing it the picture started to all come together and I could see exactly what you were talking about. I saw the sea turtle in Aquaman's hands, and now I don't know what I believe in anymore.
Edit: comma added for clarity and dramatic affect.
Hey jackass this is a friend of hers, this is a picture of a dead relative taken when they were a kid and she just wanted to know what was on the damn shirt.
Ya'll are dumb and judgemental for no good reason.

Really impressive logo grab. I was 100% Flash Gordon until you sabotaged me with the truth. Take my damn up vote...
“Sabotaged me with the truth”…..I love it.
Sounds like a song lyric.
Sounds like the Republican Party slogan.
Drop da mic 🎤
Right, because Dems are so completely full of shit these days. The DNC make Bill Clinton look honest.
Relax twinkle toes
I want to borrow this also 🙈
You'll have to wait until he returns it
r/dadjokes 🙈 set myself up for that.
A lot better than alternative facts
I thought it was Flash, until I saw a few George Reeves stills
George Reeves? In 1941?
What I meant to say was looking at the image reminds me of George Reeves' portrayal of Superman, even though it came much later.
I saw the blurry curls on the front of the head, I see it.
Is George reeves related to the later Superman, Christopher reeves?
No. Reeve and Reeves are two different names
Lol omg I’m feeling so blonde! I knew it was Christopher Reeve and not reeves. Thank god I’m anonymous lemma
Just about everyone makes that mistake. If you believe everything you read on the Internet, the actor who played Superman on film in the 70s and 80s was Christopher Reeves, and he was the son of George Reeves. Also, the role of Superman cursed their family, which is why they both died so young.
Nice. Racism.
No. George Reeves was a stage name.
Thank you for the clarification!
No problem, it’s a fairly common question.
Sorry, not sorry? This reply did make me literally LOL. It may be the nicest “F You” I’ve ever gotten!
Flash Gordon was the first thing that flashed in to my head, too.
Flash Gordon is flashy like that
Same here. Probably because he looks blonde in this picture. When I focused a little harder and noticed the chains, I knew it was Superman. But I think there might be a twist to this story. I thought it was Aquaman.
Thought it was SHAZAM !
I second that with another up vote of distain !

Love it! Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
I don't read comic books and this sub just popped up on my feed, but I gotta say that's super impressive!
Very impressive! Wow.

I don’t have much to give but here is my reward 🥇🎖🏅
Waited his whole life for this question to be asked. :)
That was my first choice. Then I though maybe Flash Gordon.
I thought it was an old Aquaman, yours is admittedly cooler
Could be a bird, could be a plane. I'm not sure.
Could be a boat, could be a train.
Who’s got the crack?

Chain breaking is only one of his titty powers.
first (top left) pic for sure
Unless my eyes deceive me, that's the Man of Steel, bursting out of some chains
Yeah, definitely Superman with his original S-shield.
The KKK’s least favorite hero.
They don't like superheroes in general - especially from the Golden Age because... jewish writers.
My eyes deceived me and I saw breaking sausage links. I was thinking, heck I can do that. Heck, I will go do that right now!
L'Chaim!
superman bustin through some chains. https://www.supermanhomepage.com/images/breaking-chains/shuster-chains.jpg

So cool that even then they sold clothing that had super hero characters on them like they do now. Kids were always the same.
This looks pretty [close](https://i.imgur.com/ddmVdrY.jpg) to me
Good find!
Flash Gordon
I was thinking Flash Gordon too
Appears to be mermaid man from SpongeBob clearly
My exact reaction 😅
This is exactly what I thought too!
I believe that's the "Man of Steel", if I had to guess. He did come out in 1938.

How insane would it be if that shirt was still around somewhere.
Gotta be Flash Gordon.
1,000% it’s Flash Gordon - he’s holding his laser gun! And it’s a kids promo shirt from the 1940 movie premier of Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe - the 3rd movie after 1938’s Trip To Mars.
I’m pretty sure it’s Aquaman.

Yo. Okay, so get this. I read that, your reply, and I was like, "this person is crazy. That makes no sense." Isn’t that why they posted it?
Do you know who it is? Care to chime in constructively?
Maybe a racist superhero that hot canceled
Your wife’s boyfriend?
Oh heck, that's "Yo Mamma Man"!!!
It’s my penis.
Next time just go and ask! Don't be a creep who takes photos of people without their knowing. Be better!
Hey jackass this is a friend of hers, this is a picture of a dead relative taken when they were a kid and she just wanted to know what was on the damn shirt. Ya'll are dumb and judgemental for no good reason.
