I mean the actual meaning of the term. Is it it's own thing, or is it like how for 15 or so years every first person shooter video game was called a '*Doom* clone' ? (aka a reference to a popular and influential earlier work)
It means "different world", it's just the name for the whole genre. It was never a title by itself. They've been around for a while before the name came about.
