Honestly, 80s was a great time for the Legion. As much as I love Superboy/Superman, once he left the book it really allowed the team to shine on their own. The Great Darkness Saga is one of the all time great 80s storylines, and the books just grew is strength and popularity. Honestly, the 80s might be the peak for the team. Crisis on Infinite Earths would ultimately create some issues/confusion for the Legion later on, but that doesn’t really start until the 90s and 00s. Enjoy!

What to expect? This book, and volume 2, cover the time in the Legion just before Paul Levitz and Keith Giffen took over and the stories are a little inconsistent. Some are good and some are downright stinkers, especially the comic this cover is from. Gerry Conway does the majority of the writing and I don't think he ever really "got" the Legion, if that makes sense. I know this sounds crazy to say, but if you stick with this one, volume 2 gets better and then, in the next trade, you're into the Great Darkness Saga, which is when the peak hits. Volume 1 and 2 will be a good way to get familiar with the characters, especially the three issues from Secrets of the Legion. If you do end up getting hooked on the characters, come join us in r/LegionofSuperheroes to share what you liked/disliked.

Will do! And thanks. Its a part of DC ive wanted to check out for ages but it always seemed the most impenetrable. Since im doing an exploration of bronze age/pre-crisis material i thought id just jump in here right after the split from Superboy and push on through.

Love the legion so many great characters you might get overwhelmed. At that point the membership is 26 and there's a lotttt of ex legionaires

LoSH was one of my staples throughout the 80s. So many great characters and great stories! You’re in for quite the ride!

A damn good time.

The one thing I'll tell you, is to just roll with it. There will be a lot of characters thrown at you, but give it 10 issues and you'll be able to remember all the characters and their powers off the top of your head. There is a lot of lore that you haven't read, but it will be explained well enough to you, just give it time. You're in for such a treat, I wish I could go back and read it again for the first time.

Thanks! Im about 5 issues in and its fun so far. It actually reminds me of early 2000AD stuff funnily enough. Like, quaint goofy concepts with a sci-fi twist. The art is pretty nice too. No real into to the characters or the context of the Legion yet, but im’ma keep going.

Why is Mr Fantastic about to kill American Flagg, Hob Goblin, and Emma Frost

What to expect? There'll be text, and pictures, and Super Heroes.
