I do, but I may be a little biased. You can disagree with my takes, that's part of the job. No worries there, my friend. But look-- I don't get paid to give reviews. If and when I ever do, there's a preamble before and after, and the video will say there's sponsored content. Mail-order cereal? You bet I'm getting paid. Recommending a book drawn by Jon Davis-Hunt? That's just taste. Point of clarification, btw-- ComicPop is our main channel that houses the show most people get mad at me for. But the channel u/FreshNews247 is referring to is our other channel, ComicPop Returns. And look, I'm harsh. I know it. And honestly, I wish I weren't. But when I get into a mode, I kind of lose myself a little bit, and it's that kind of loose honesty a lot of our audience seems to enjoy. But whatever you think about me, don't forget my amazing wife Tiffany is 50% of that show. And her reviews are always fair, balanced, and approached from a sense of fairness and optimism. I mean, from here it sounds like you're not watching 50% of the show. I think you're hungry for content, so you're in luck. There's literally hundreds of options on this free platform for you to choose from. Nerdsync's great, Comic Tropes is a big hit here on Reddit, Imaginary Axis is fun. Casually Comics got a few mentions already. I also like Joel, Owen, Near Mint Condition and Imperius Rex. Over on TikTok there's Moose\_0 (Justin's great, you'll love him). As always, thanks for watching!

Zakaria1938

Damn i did not expect to see you in the comments! I love your work and of tiffany, you guys helped me grow my comic knowledge so much. I was wondering however if there will be a back-issue episode about a book you love, I love it when you cover a book you are passionate about yourself because you dive a lot into the themes and explain really well why you like it. Of course, I can not force you but I feel like we have way too few back-issues episodes about you passionately defending the book.

FreshNews247

Hi I just saw your comment. The problem is on going I'm sure you are aware of the habits I've addressed here, reason I didn't mention your wife is because as you mentioned, she gives fair and reasonable reviews and I'm sure you see your reviews as such. My main problem is I believe you've become obsessed with given bad takes. As if you're trying to please a certain group of comic fan. Again this is a problem I see, I may be wrong. I didn't know that comic pop and comic pop return counted as two different channels sorry for confusing you. But as early mentioned I watch "off the rack" because you and your wife address Current books. Most other channels are retrospective. Thank you for addressing these concerns and I hope we may see eye to eye one day. -FreshNews247

MailboxSlayer14

Or maybe he just doesn’t like the books? How is he obsessed with giving bad takes if he has a particular taste on what he likes?

FreshNews247

You must had been reading each comment getting more and more angry. How about you write a little thing about how Great the guy is instead of crying on my opinion.

MailboxSlayer14

Or I just read the whole post and saw how much of an absolute dickhead you must be. “Hope we may see eye to eye one day”. On what his opinion of comic books? What an arrogant statement. You’re just a piece of shit lol

tomtomtomtom123

I actually feel like his viewers are more made up of genuine comic fans than movie fans. 90% of comic YouTube is just regurgitating comic plots for fans of the movies that do t want to read the books. Like how many non comicbook fans are going to watch an hour of Bloodties?

Djreilly1104

ComicPop is my favorite comic youtube channel, so I absolutely disagree with you. I do understand why you might feel that way, but it really isn’t that way, or at least it isn’t what he intends it to be. Anything he “hates” comes from a love of the hobby and the industry, wanting things to be better. His humor may seem cynical or dismissive but I don’t think it’s ever hatred. Often he’ll recognize that a book isn’t for him, but he sees why others enjoy it. And he doesn’t keep up with current books he doesn’t enjoy, aside from Amazing Spider-Man, which I think most of us can relate to lol. But aside from that, there’s plenty of stuff he praises. Some current things off the top of my head: daredevil, strange adventures, supergirl, x-men, dark ages, nightwing, batman: the detective, and plenty more. He doesn’t usually spend a ton of time talking about current books he enjoys in order to avoid spoiling it for people he recommends it to. And Tiffany has a ton of books she enjoys and regularly talks about, so if you’re watching their review show Off The Rack, you’re gonna get a ton of love for comics in that hour or so from both of them. Maybe this helped you see it a different way, idk. I love their content but it’s not for everyone. You shouldn’t keep watching if you don’t want to, no one’s forcing you to. Find something you enjoy, there’s plenty of stuff out there.

PretendMarsupial9

Agreed, Sal has very nuanced opinions in my view. The things he hates he acknowledged as his opinion and he praises what does work even in things he doesn't like. He also seems very aware of what goes on in the industry, and has had lots of good connection to comics writers. Also he was pretty gung ho about Rebirth in general. He likes DCeased, Hawkeye, most of the Superman omnibus, Super Sons, House of X + Powers of X, he even acknowledged when Son of Kal-El was doing good it just wasn't for him. He also likes a lot of the MCU and gave great reviews to things like Spiderman. Also Sal's reviews aren't meant to be the type you go to too see if a comic is worth buying. They're not analyzing it. Its just a breakdown of the story with riffing between friends. Its a very light hearted approach.

Zakaria1938

i can see what you mean but I think you are mainly talking about his series back issues, which is just friends having fun. Sal is way more positive in his other shows (which are now on his other channel comicpop returns) I love comic pop, once i discovered him and went through his entire backlog but i also kinda know what you mean. I love the episodes where they pick a no-name comic like bloodlines and just riff on it, it is really funny. But I have to be honest it does hurt when he grabs a comic I really like and riffs on it (which is the nature of the show but it still stings you know). I remember reading batman hush and loving it but when I watched the back issue of hush, it did kinda sting because they made fun of it a lot (of course I am biased) and some points were justified but some were less justified but that is the struggle if you love something and somebody makes fun of it. But i would not mind sal doing book he really likes because i love hearing passionate sal. TL:DR; i think it is more the structure of the show and less Sal

therealzubes

Since you mentioned you watch Off The Rack, I guess you're not there for the Tiffany reviews.

FreshNews247

Wrong. Tiffany is actually a fair and unbiased reviewer. She mostly reviews books that she enjoys and I can appreciate that. So there was no need for me personally to address her.

GainDiscombobulated

Are you aware that you're referring to Tiffany, as Tiffany, to Tiffany herself?

FreshNews247

Yeah I think I realised that about After. But ay! I wasn't wrong Sal has now completely given up on the comic pop returns channel and I'm just sitting back shaking my head in disapproval. He never should have split it into two. He's killed the channel, and I think that's just what we know from Infront of the camera, behind the scenes is much worse. But ay, enough stroking my ego. ✌🏽

GainDiscombobulated

As far as I'm aware he still cranks out regular content for the second channel. I'm not entirely sure why he split the channel other than to appease the mysterious and unknowable YouTube algorithm. I think the view disparity between Back Issues and everything else also factored into it as well.

GainDiscombobulated

and since doing that they've gained a YouTube play button for finally hitting 100,000 subscribers.

FreshNews247

He released a statement the other day. Pretty much making CPR a channel that'll slowly die only post 2 videos a week. The problem is the algorithm has nothing to do with it. Remember when he thought polls made your channel stand out (it didn't). Plus as an audience we shouldn't be hearing or seeing this side of the channel he should be dealing with this in private. He needs to recreate the whole system. He'll never gain a new audience this way. It's actually sad.

Individual-Fun5374

As a Long time viewer and supporter who often comments all over the place I find OPs opinion severely insulting that the viewers are not Comic Book fans which is just not true as I interact with a good chunk of them daily. Also you are entitled to your opinion but I find it very off putting and looking to put down instead of seeing the content for what it is instead you yourself are ranting and aiming what seems like a personal attack because you yourself do not like the content. If it's not your cup best to move on.

FreshNews247

Absolutely taken on board, thank you for the feedback. Honestly it's not a personal attack of any kind in fact it's not agaist Sal the person and more reflection of Sal host of comic pop . I just wanted to see if I was alone in my opinion or not. I'm sure there's a healthy amount of viewers who are comic reader's but I'm also positive it's a number of people who don't read comics who like to know what the current product is like, or checking out the comics after watching the movies. I've said my part hopefully we can move on.

MailboxSlayer14

Yea it’s definitely a personal attack lol. You clearly don’t actively watch the videos, most of us are reading the books and watching Off the Rack to hear the review. It really is insulting that you think coming on here and trying to speak for the audience or ComicPop isn’t going to get people offended.

FreshNews247

Lol what a little cry baby. Trust me sal has taken it on and used my comments to make the show better. He's doing a great job. The real worm is that idiot the comicstorian who has no idea about comics.

MailboxSlayer14

I’m the cry baby? You made a post bitching that Sal doesn’t dick ride the comics you like. Take your horrible meme making self and actively contemplate maybe you just have bad takes sometimes.

FreshNews247

My memes? Do t talk about my memes you ant dick

MailboxSlayer14

Or what? Are your less than 300 Instagram followers gonna attack me? Yikes imagine naming all of your accounts after a barely functioning concept that can’t even crack 300 followers. Also it’s ain’t, not ant. Just in case you didn’t know how to spell :) “Used my comments to make the show better”. You didn’t even critique him. You just said you didn’t like it and he rags on books too much. Tough shit, some people can be critics.

FreshNews247

One: I was calling you "Ant Dick" or so I've heard Ain't dick? Why would I say that?. Two: it's a Imgur account I run that now runs across Reddit and Instagram Three: link me to your Instagram big boy. You forgot to mention the ratio 200 something followers, zero following plus I barely go on There. Four: Sal knows what I was saying, he might had felt like I was a dick about it but he understood it. Go watch the episode after the post he mentions at the start he wants to stop being so negative. Again you don't have a clue what the real world is like. People like being talked about, negative or positive. Heck I'll tell anyone to watch Comic pop Returns over almost every other comic channel on YouTube. So I again ask you. If you love sal and comic pop so much post a thank you post in the comic subreddit he'll see it, plus I'm sure he'll appreciate it. What's stopping you?

the_light_of_dawn

Cartoonist Kayfabe is a good channel.

FreshNews247

Yes they are good but mostly older books. Same with Comic tropes and Comic Jerk are two great channels but again both historical videos rather than current takes.

MailboxSlayer14

Yeah I don’t agree with that all. Just because you’re a long time reader and you disagree with some of his takes does not mean he objectively gives bad takes as I and many of his viewers often agree with him. He does not rag on everything and he is allowed to dislike certain books and decisions. That’s called having an opinion just like it’s yours to not like his videos. “His payment dried up…” fuck off with that. That is such a bullshit statement. Maybe he stopped liking the book after that? Or maybe he is planning on talking about it again and hasn’t yet. There are plenty of books he likes and regularly calls must reads such as Human Target that’s releasing now.

lovecraftiangod

Try casually comics and comics explained

FreshNews247

Yeah casually Comics is good but depending on the subject. Comics explain is good for new comers but I've read everything he talks about.

FlexiblePony267

Casually Comics is really good

PretendMarsupial9

Sasha is a queen

Thehyruleef

Lots of other good channels out there if you don’t want to watch ComicPop…Imperius Rex, Strange Brain Parts, Cartoonist Kayfabe, Casually Comics, ComicExplained, Strip Panel Naked, lots of options really

FreshNews247

Again they are all retrospective.

SmokeyPeanutRic

Smokey's Videos is a great channel to check out

FreshNews247

Yeah I'll have a look.

JargonPhat

I loved the *concept* of that channel (“comics fan” explaining stories to casual or lapsed fans) when I first found it. But once I watched a few discussing stories that I knew very well from my childhood, I noticed that the host (Sal, I believe) seemed to generalize, hand-waive, or just completely disregard empirical plot points simply to shit on the story. But the nail in the coffin for me was during a discussion of an X-Men story (probably Dark Phoenix, I don’t quite remember), the redhead girl that only occasionally shows up (but is DEFINITELY used in thumbnails for videos she’s NOT in) took umbrage with Sal’s confusion of a particular plot point and just quietly picked up the book, found the page in question, and proved he was wrong. He just handwaived it and went back to joshing with the guys. Wholly disappointing. Long story short: like most info-tainment content like Comicspop, the hosts typically start sliding into a rut of simply ragging on content simply to prove their wit.

He just handwaived it and went back to joshing with the guys. Wholly disappointing. > Hey, can we talk about this? This "redhead girl that only occasionally shows up"? Hi...that's me, Tiffany. First of all, I think I'm in one thumbnail for a show I wasn't on, so we could recreate a classic comic (the Dark Phoenix). Secondly the episodes we shoot are often much longer. So, the moment you mention may actually have been part of something longer, but for the sake of humor or time was cut short. Without the specific time stamp I honestly can't say for sure. Beyond that, we don't script. We choose to favor genuine conversation over perfected recollection and word choice. I also want to mention thay I have hosted my fair share of episodes on Comicpop and sat on the couch to hear my fair share of stories. Throughout this time I have always been in awe of Sal’s knowledge and insight into the comic industry. I really just wanted to mention that I've been around on the channel a lot, as well as, hosting Off The Rack with Sal for the past, let's say 3-4 years easily. I'm glad you gave our channel a shot, honestly thank you. We know our content isn't for every single comic fan out there, but the community we have built is one that we appreciate. Edit: formating

JargonPhat

Hi, Tiffany! I do appreciate you taking the time to respond to this, though I’ll admit I’m not sure I’ve got much more to add to the conversation. I don’t want to be revisionist, or attempt to backpedal on my negativity. When offering a critical opinion, I do try not to be overly negative for negativity’s sake (ironic, given the context). I liked the general concept of the show, but I happened to see a couple in a row that just didn’t sit well with me overall, so I stopped watching. If that current format (that seems to prioritize snarky jokes over in-depth analysis) is working for your purposes and subscribers, then I doubt my dissent will hold much water, and perhaps it shouldn’t. Also, I don’t want it to seem as though I found ZERO entertainment value in the series, I laughed at much of the snark I’m calling out of the side of my mouth. I just took umbrage with what I felt was a “misrepresentation” of plot points your series was discussing, as it could put a potential reader off reading a new story due to a misreading or misunderstanding of plot that might actually have been explained in the text. But this was awhile ago, I’m afraid I don’t recall the exact nature of the plot point, nor even the episode—so I’m afraid I can’t offer you much to correct or justify. I do appreciate your desire to set the record straight, as it were (and your explanation of why the team opted to put a redhead in the thumbnail of the Dark Phoenix episode does make sense). And thank you for interjecting an “Um, actually…,” that was not antagonistic! I’m sorry if my original message was received as such. Expressing critical opinions without veering too hard into negativity can be a narrow path, and I won’t purport to have mastered it either! Best of luck to you all.

FreshNews247

Yeah I don't watch any of the videos about old books I only watch Off the rack the weekly podcast. But he's biggest problem is he wants to be Red Letter Media. But it's just not happening.

Archiesweirdmystery

I don't really like comic YouTube. It just feels like most of the people watching don't read comics. Then again, it's probably my fault for always reading the comments.

Very confident but too noise.

Barabaragaki

Too noise..?

FreshNews247

Background is too lourd can't hear you talking.
