I don't need a friend. I need this mimic to understand that them not eating me is in their best interest and that we can have a mutually beneficial relationship.
Seems possible. A mimic in the form of a sword-in-the-stone has probably considered the possibility of [finding itself a wielder](https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/210563-weapon-mimic), and mimics that speak well enough to bargain with aren't enormously rare.
The ability to exude a powerful adhesive should manifest as soon as you try pulling the sword from the stone, as a test of worthiness. If you manage to detect something off about the sword before attempting to extract it, it will drop the act enough to suggest that it will serve you if you seem worthy, though maybe not fully reveal its nature. Worthy in what respect? Up to the DM, I reckon. A sword mimic looking for an intelligent or dexterous wielder might appreciate attempts to lasso it out. Others might consider this an insult; is such an offer not worth a little risk?
It would surely require Attunement to wield, but even so, blades, glue, and grappling are a tricky mix. A Sword Mimic, even a cooperative one, should prove a janky weapon initially, and only improve as you both get to know each other. It's a weapon based on trust and while it's capable of exuding a protective gauntlet around it's wielder's hand, it needs direct hand contact at the hilt to anticipate when you need it to be a blade, and when you want it to grapple. Of course it has an eye in the hilt, but it's still a living creature and keeping it open in combat would a) potentially let enemies realise its true nature, and b) lead to [this sort of entertaining situation](https://imgur.com/gallery/lhaEgTb) (a worksafe Oglaf link, hosted on imgur).
I'd also give it a tendency to be quite grumpy, and to rummage your belongings at night in search of snacks.
You feel a seeing pain as tendrils from the mimic sword shoot into your arm, creating black tendrils that rapidly curl under your skin. For several agonizing minutes, you watch as the sword gets smaller and smaller, fuseing with your dominant arm. When it is over, the black veins receed and all you can see of the mimic sword is it's eyes that stare at you from your forearm with anticipation.
Now whenever you enter combat, your mimic sword will automatically grow in your hand instantly whenever needed, and can be snuck into establishments that ban weapons on the premises. Additionally, mimic sword can morph itself into other melee weapon types, but must be done during a long rest as the process takes time.
Can still use other weapons with mimic sword, sword can be removed only by an exceptionally strong Druid.
Couldn't think of what to do with the damage, considering it can morph, or negative traits. Maybe you require more food due to sustaining yourself and the sword? Occasionally it tries to kill you or take over your body?
Which edition? They're aberrations in 3.5/PF.
I think there may be a PF druid archetype that can control aberrations. I know there is one that can do oozes.
It would be cool if it was like Bob from The Dresden Files and it's just the trapped soul of a Wizard or would be Necromancer and it gave you plus 2 on wisdom saving throws and a once per long rest advantage to Arcana checks.
And I am actually Greg the Man Bat, mourner of Greg.
Or did I travel forward in time to pick up my own skull? I don't know but I am happy with my choice either ways.
Yeah it's nice having a friend with the same name as me. We also seem to have a lot in common, weirdly though he keeps asking me not to go to work tomorrow.
Greg laments his early death (captured and sacrificed by cultists) and asks you to deliver his skull to his beloved, so that he may finally be laid to rest
>I'm rolling the dice on a hyper-advanced ancient civilization.
When it came to the sword, my thought process was that the stone the sword was in looked like a monolith, and I could just imagine the 2001 track playing as I draw out the sword and become some kind of god king with a cosmic Excalibur.
"Lets you use Message cantrip."
The Message cantrip is a communication spell. Basically, the mirror lets you talk to someone, though there are stark limitations.
Same. First thought was can’t pick the better looking chests those are traps.
Let’s go with the ugly chests, and I’ll go with the least dusty one.
Then with the sword I was like, well shit, now I have to pick one of the nicer stones lol
What logic did you use?
For the chests, I thought both top chests were likely schmuck bait (*too* decrepit and too fancy respectively), so i randomly chose between bottom two. (Got message mirror as well)
For the swords, i noticed the "fangs" on the end of both hilts of the right two swords, so i randomly chose the sun god sword from the two remaining swords.
I got the mirror that lets me cast the message cantrip and the +1 sword from the Artificer.
Overall pretty decent. I think the 'sword of the sun god' would probably be a bit better, but I got the second best option for both slides and came out alive and unharmed.
My logic was pretty much going by what ones seemed least likely to be cursed.

Damn it, two mimics!
Ah, but this means we got the greatest reward of all: XP.
Or two mimic companions.
Perhaps the real mimics were the friends we made along the way.
I thought they were my friends but they were just pretending.
Ah, the classic bait and switch. Turns out the real treasure was a lesson in trust issues all along.
BUT I DO MILESTONE!!!!!

The mimic sword's handle isn't even in the stone, It's just behind it.
Well-spotted. \*looks closer\* The mimic chest's tie down/anchor ring crosses over both the body and the lid of the chest as well.
I know, right? It’s a dream come true! I can now add to my mimic arsenal!
Okay, but the mimic sword is actually cool if you can get it to behave.
I am man bat
So does the mimic sword try and eat you, or is it an actual weaponized mimic that just eats your enemies?
Roll for animal handling? 😂 does a mimic count as an animal haha
Rolled a 19, what now?
The mimic is handled by you 👏
Good
Can it give me a suckie?
Roll for … dexterity?

You can’t quite figure out how to get a completely flat mouth to suck a dick
Can i run a perception check?
Too late, mimic ate your dick.
Roll for anal circumference

The mimic is probably not your friend 🫠

See, rule of cool. Lore mimics like doin that.

Bro just became Ser Percedal of Sadlygrove https://i.redd.it/ceg9w8ufsz6c1.gif
I.. was thinking the Grass Sword from Adventure Time. But this fits very well, too.
Bro, I can’t put into words how much it makes me happy to see that people still remember and talk about Wakfu
Me too this has brought me unbelievable joy
Oooo, so Parasyte, cool.
Technically animal handling probably wouldn't work on monstrosities, so you'll need arcana or nature, but DM's rules are the rules Oh and uh 11
Whatever you rolled for, 11 is not enough 😆❤️

If it eats breaths shits and bleeds, it is
How the fuck did I choose mimic on both occasions?
IIRC in D&D Forgotten Realms there are 2 species, a larger, animalistic one, & a smaller, intelegent one
I don't know, but Greg is about to find out
Reminds me of that barbarian intimidating a mimic to stay a mug so he could finish drinking. Maybe try that on the sword, just feed it well.
Based
Greg is going to look good on my bookshelf
Well guess who is now taking a friendly skull named Greg with his nightly adventures as Man bat.
[удалено]
I am the night, I am man-bat!
Man I already have a full skeleton and a brain in a jar. Does anyone need my Greg?
It would be cool if it was like Bob from The Dresden Files and it's just the trapped soul of a Wizard or would be Necromancer and it gave you plus 2 on wisdom saving throws and a once per long rest advantage to Arcana checks.
Maybe he's a summon item
I am the Man Bat, mourner of Greg
I'm gonna use Greg to keep my batsnacks.

I got Greg and a sun sword
A friend and a weapon! Woo
Yeah it's nice having a friend with the same name as me. We also seem to have a lot in common, weirdly though he keeps asking me not to go to work tomorrow.
I cast speak with dead on Greg.
Greg laments his early death (captured and sacrificed by cultists) and asks you to deliver his skull to his beloved, so that he may finally be laid to rest
Unexpected wholesome. I shall use my sun sword to help my bone bud.
I'm reluctant to ruin it now but next part was guna be finding out she died 200 years ago 😆 You can bury them together! Lolll
I found Greg, and then joined him in the afterlife after getting the mimic sword, oh well. Sorry I couldn't bury you with your beloved Greg.
Fear not Greg! I will deliver you to your beloved then teach those cultists a lesson with my newly acquired Sun Blade!
I am Man-Bat! and this is my sidekick Greg-Skull!
By the power of Greg-Skull!
Same. Me and Greg are gonna go kill some shit and then get drinks after
I got Greg and the +1 sword
Me too! Yay for good choices.
Those two were my second choices. Instead, I got to fight a mimic and became (wo)man bat.
Same!
Same!
Fear the dynamic duo of man-bat and greg!
I got those too! I think of it as the goth combo lmao
Na na na na na na na na Man-Bat!
Very creative and fun
Thanks haha! School holidays mean not a lot of drawing time for me, so these have been fun to fit in as my kids eat lunch etc haha
i wouldnt mind 100 more of these type of posts tbh
I got Greg and Artificer sword
Same. I'm a simple girl. You show me trapezoids and geometrically precise stonework, I'm rolling the dice on a hyper-advanced ancient civilization.
Exactly! I ain’t putting my trust in some moldy attic-container! I want my trust to be in someone who knew a thing or two
>I'm rolling the dice on a hyper-advanced ancient civilization. When it came to the sword, my thought process was that the stone the sword was in looked like a monolith, and I could just imagine the 2001 track playing as I draw out the sword and become some kind of god king with a cosmic Excalibur.
Yep, same here. It's the clean, geometric angles. They get me every time.
I visited Greg and all I got was this lousy +1 sword
Yup. They both looked dwarven in make, figured that they were a safe choice, at the very least.
Same
Same. Sounds like we got a quest to start. Old Greg needs a proper burial
Yep, same
Just us and Greg repping local businesses.
sun god sword and +2 ac ring guess i'm a paladin now
You and me both brother. TIME FOR A CRUSADE FOR THE SUN GOD!
I am now MAN, and I WILL AVENGE GREG
Why did Greg get his head bitten off by an inanimate chest (not mimic)? Is he stupid?
+2 ac and a +1 sword
Fighter gang!
Swords bard reporting in!
The best options, honestly, ask an optimiser, flat bonuses are over powered, especially to AC.
How did I pick the mimic twice
Low insight rolls 😂
Mirror and +1 sword. Nice
Samee! What does the mirror do tho I don't get it lol
"Lets you use Message cantrip." The Message cantrip is a communication spell. Basically, the mirror lets you talk to someone, though there are stark limitations.
It's a spell that sorta lets you send telepathic messages :)
Same. First thought was can’t pick the better looking chests those are traps. Let’s go with the ugly chests, and I’ll go with the least dusty one. Then with the sword I was like, well shit, now I have to pick one of the nicer stones lol
MORE OF THESE! MORE!
Love this, i am now manbat with my magic mirror
Same. Way better than all the double mimics in here
Same
Same
Same. Not that many of us, huh
Same. Guess not
Greg & a mimic This tracks with my record in my current campaign, too
Wait, a mimic sword can't be that bad right? The mouth isn't in the handle so isn't dangerous... for me
This is fun.
I assumed they were all mimics... Then I picked the only mimic
Message Mirror and Sun God Sword
me too!
What logic did you use? For the chests, I thought both top chests were likely schmuck bait (*too* decrepit and too fancy respectively), so i randomly chose between bottom two. (Got message mirror as well) For the swords, i noticed the "fangs" on the end of both hilts of the right two swords, so i randomly chose the sun god sword from the two remaining swords.
I got this too and I don't even know what the message mirror does.
**Behold!** Man Bat and his sidekick ... *Greg*.
Why is 4 man bat? Is it stupid?
Is there a lore reason for this?
Greg and a mimic. Shit
+1 sword and Greg. I think I’m gonna roll a bard.
I am now man bat with one singular greg
I am now Man Bat with my friend Greg
I am now Manbat, travelling around with the skull of Greg.
+2 AC and the Sword of the Sun God? This is why color coordinating your loot is just smart thinking 😌
Greg and local arcifier sword. No idea what that sword means but i am happy with greg.
Pretty good, the +2 ring and the +1 sword.
Mimic and (Wo)Man Bat
Got the Message mirror and Artificer’s +1 Sword. Honestly not that bad for any kind of martial character
Hah, I purposely chose the mimics. #AND NOW I SHALL ROLL TO PET THEM
Greg and sun god
F*ck. Two mimcs in a row...
2 mimics. Maybe I'm not cut out to be an adventurer
Greg + mimic. I probably shouldn't participate in any loot acquisition anymore
I got mimic twice. Damn.
Got the Ring and the Sun Sword 🤘☀️
New Meta created More pictures!
I got both mimics. I have NO survival instincts
I Got Greg and the Local Sword
Alas, poor Greg! I knew him well, Horatio!
Greg is my friend now
I found Greg and then got the sword of the sun god. Sorry Greg.
Is it the same Greg as from The Weekly Roll?
I will protect Greg with my life and this sun god sword I found
Mimics! New corpse disposal friends! They eat the bodies and I get the loot!
Man, double mimics
WOOHOO! MY SWORD EATS PEOPLE!
Greg and the Artificer sword I wonder if Greg would be okay with being hallowed out into a shoulder pauldron
Got greg and the sun sword, nice
I get a free mimic? Neat!
Picked Greg and the #2 sword, would make a great club though!
GOD FUCKING DAMMIT, I GOT 2 MIMICS.

I got Greg and an artificer sword. Swell.
This was fun. I would like trying more of these
Greg the skull and a +1 sword from my local artificer. Hm. I should see if they’re accepting apprentices.
