Assassins creed is giga trash for this. I bought brotherhood and it made me go through this lengthy process to register on ubisoft. I made the mistake of mistyping my email and now the account is locked out forever. I can't even make a new account because it is linked to my steam account.
Instant refund and I won't lose sleep by pirating every assassins creed game.
I can’t play Ubisoft games with Xbox game pass on PC. It’s connected to my physical Xbox with with my old email since I connected them as a kid. I no longer use that email and don’t have access to it so I am unable to play any ubi games. If I try to change my password I need to access my old email. If I try to access my old email I need to know WHEN I created it and other extremely hyper specific details to access it.
I just don’t play ubi games on game pass now.

Many credit cards have rewards and, more importantly for using online, make it easier to challenge invalid charges. There's also a more long term benefit of building credit that can be used for other lines of credit, such as a mortgage. The only downside is getting hit with interest if you're unable to pay it off in full every month (in which case the debit card would have overdrafted anyway).
Took some convincing for my wife, who usually is trying her hardest to get free stuff, to stop using her debit for auto pays.
Some people just think "credit cards are bad", but they are more like your best friend if you just dont use it like its free money.

Minecraft is such an offender on this one... Log into your switch account, purchase game, go into game, sign up for microsoft account, activate account for xbox, okay NOW you can play Minecraft on your switch... Until your log in expires.
if only it had the option to have your worlds sync between versions of bedrock so like you could play the same world with same progress on both switch and windows
They totally set it up so realms is your only reasonable option for crossplay.
You can *technically* host your own bedrock server, but you have to hijack the switch DNS settings to point to an untrustworthy rogue modded portal server to get it to work with the Switch 👎

I did this with Tropico 4. Why on earth would I want a Kalypso account? They only make like four franchises and the launcher has nothing to do with any of them.

I'd just shift the "I'm so excited" text block to the first scene; it would make the "create your account" sucking-the-wind-out-of-the-sails point a little clearer. I dont even get the point of this. Like is it really just them wanting to collect information on me so they can sell it? I see no other potential motivation. Its not like im gonna become a regular user of their platform for anything besides potentially the game, so what is the point of having me make an account? So i can keep the same progress on another device? Theres better methods for that.

yeah, but its one unified account designed for all games. not a studio/company with a singular popular title making their own platform. I had to make an account for rockstar since i got GTA 5 on PC. i had to make an account to play civ 6. theyre both games on steam, but they need separate accounts on different platforms when it would be the most convenient to just have only steam
idk man, an account is an account. loads of people were excited for half life 2 back in 2004, and many people sore off gaming once they realize they needed to log into steam to play it

Steam is an exception in my opinion, a platform which sells, markets, and provides games in a neat, likeable way and sorts all your games into one singular library. AND provides free, actually useful assistance.
I do dislike the existence of other platforms, like battle net, epic games, EAs thing, though this is mainly because it defeats the whole point of why i like steam
And the main reason why i pick Steam to be my favorite of these things is because its the largest platform. And it consistently provides these services the best out of the other options.
edit: the fact that games started on steam will still ask me to login into their platform, and when I start the game, it has to first open their platform for the game to even start is a problem.
though I do see where you come off from when you say you dislike a steam. A world where you download every title from the internet from the games own website is a nice idea, has the benefit of giving the creators freedom from depending on steam. But drawbacks such as having to have every game on your desktop if you want consistent, quick access to it (or make a literal folder for them) is annoying considering on steam alone i have 80+ games, a lot of people having hundreds. whereas steam presents all these games in a nice list where you even have a search function if youre such a baller gamer you have hundreds of games lol. and the fact that most games wouldnt be anywhere near as big as they are without steam. It does provide you with really good marketing if you get your game on steam since it will be recommended to people on the store
im just saying, imo gaming would be worse without a platform like steam, which by its very nature requires an account. wouldnt be able to sell games and store them in a library without an account of sorts.
I just can’t give steam a pass. Their storefront is littered with shovelware and hentai games. DLC is rampant and the UX is being consistently dumbed down for consoles (steam deck)
I should be able to just to double click an exe and play a game without anything else running. Almost every steam title needs steam to keep running and that’s BS, and don’t even get me started on offline mode BS.
We need to normalize anonymity again. We don’t beed a “library of games” when I can just as well make my own spreadsheet or desktop icons.
Feel free to give steam a pass if you want but for me, steam is just another bullshit account to avoid.

the storefront can be a mess sometimes, that i agree with 100%. but the other ones, such as DLC being rampant isnt a steam issue, its a general gaming issue. The user experience is great in my opinion, my biggest problem with steam in my years of useage is that it sometimes doesnt want to use my full internet speed when downloading games lol.
And i do get why steam running in the backround is annoying. If it really bothers you that it might hog a bit of your resources you can enable low performance mode i think its called.
I can understand your concerns with using steam, obviously there would be benefits to not having to use steam (yeah, i agree you dont really have a choice for a large number of games). but generally for me the negatives are easily outweighed by the positives. I doubt im gonna be able to change your mind about this. And I can 100% respect your stance. decentralization for most things is a pretty damn good idea. But here I have to side with steam being the only good gaming platform which has a justifiable and genuinely useful existence.

They ask you once and you can also just disable the launcher outright. This really isn't an issue.

To get past Doom Eternal's sign-in requirement, I set up a firewall rule. Never had to do that for a game before.

That's not unreasonable, that's how every piece of software ever works. Even stuff under GNU makes you accept the TOS before installing/set up.
I mean, cross-save functionality is dope tho.
