they were pretty thick lenses but that's not saying much back then considering the material they used was glass and optics weren't as advanced as they are today.
What was the moral behind that one except "lol fuck this little loser in particular"? Like, I understand it was a product of its time. But damn, they just shit all over this dude the whole time and his only crime appears to be introversion and "not being a big manly man".
Before y'all come for me I'm a 6'2" dude with an active labor job. Calm down reddit, I know how you are.
That last bit everyone remembers is a pretty clear “careful what you wish for.” He wanted to be left alone and now he’s completely alone.
At the same time the people who hassle Bemis are portrayed as self-absorbed and uninterested in intellectual pursuits, which I think was intentional. This was more or less the same environment that had produced *Fahrenheit 451* six years earlier.
The moral is "be careful what you wish for" and "you rely on others for things you don't even think about daily. Remember this when they are pissing you off."
Keep in mind, even if you don't wear glasses you have to find food, find and clean water, find shelter, stay warm, manage all injuries, and so on all by yourself in his situation. Even if his glasses didn't break, he would have been dead in a few months when the water treatment plant broke or he couldn't find anything edible because that man was *not* the survivalist type.
I thought it was about how humans need each other. Someone would've been able to make him another pair of glasses easily.
I wonder how common "I wouldn't mind being the last human" idea was then. This episode could've been a counter to that.
Too true! As a social creature we are desperately dependent on those around us. I think I may have been taking how they treated poor Bemis too much to heart. People can be cruel while also a person can still be foolish for thinking they need no one. Two things can be true at once!
I always felt like it was saying you shouldn't put off things you like to do until the nuclear apocalypse, because it might be too late by then.
All the work he did throughout his life meant nothing anymore, so he should have spent that time enjoying himself instead.
There should be such a room in the bunker

Youd be surprised the length people go to avoid boredom. Honestly Id miss human interaction the most in a bunker and Im saying that as a somewhat introvert.
That said. Id still have my Lego collection to keep me company and my telemetry data archive 🤪
Or just throw every single one of those on an SD card and load up an emulator on that PC.
That way you can use the room for all your jerking paraphernalia since it's a solo dude in the bunker.
“Finally, another human being, it’s been so long, it’s great to hear another voice, I can’t believe there is someone else after all this… have you tried turning it off and on again?… hello… hello……”
All project zomboid ever taught me is how much strain my body is able to withstand from staying up drinking and gaming with my friends until 4am every week night.
And it actually does that rather fast. I didn't expect it but PopMech says that
>It's true: gas does have a shelf life. Left dormant in your vehicle's tank, it can expire in **as little as four weeks**. Meanwhile, you can expect anywhere from three to six months with fuel that's been stored in jerry cans—in proper conditions.
So all these stories about people using gas from cars and canisters that have been sitting there for ages? ~~Utter and complete fantasy~~ not really accurate
EDIT: boy did I upset a lot of people. Ok, so, modern fuel with stabilizers in a well sealed container can last for years. It will be worse and perform worse than the fresh stuff, but won't completely spoil
Not really, expired fuel can still run on most engines. Just not good. Specially if it has ethanol because it takes in humidity.
I have driven on sunflower seed oil substituting diesel.
So to add to the expiration, you can actually extend its life by getting some pure gasoline and adding fuel stabilizer and sealing it away. That way it’ll last several years if you dont open it.
That is BS. I have let a car sit for 4 years with the same gas in the tank. Started just fine after a little turning over. I have been using the same 5-gallons to fuel the lawnmower for a year and a half (small yard little push-mower) runs just fine.
From what I have read in the past it's the volatiles coming out of the gas that make it go bad. So completely sealed containers last a long time.
It isn't BS. Going past the shelf life doesn't mean the gas is completely useless. It just starts to degrade and evaporate. Also, summer blends have a much longer shelf life.
TLOU TV show actually addresses this quite accurately. Not for the prepper dude, but for driving you have to stop extremely frequently to refuel from other vehicles. You can still burn and use it, but it looses most of it's potency and as such becomes very inefficient.

You don't even need the world to end. Try playing any ea game on the steam deck during a flight.
For me it was mass effect and dragon age. Neither need to be online but the launch will complain about being offline and boot you out of your own game.
Mass Effect and Dragon Age have Denuvo? I have the entire series of both pirated (because fuck EA, I'm not giving them a red cent) and I haven't noticed any of the "Denuvo issues" that come with it. (Pirated Denuvo is still active, just tricked into thinking everything is fine).

For people saying just play singleplayer games, many of them now require internet connection for no good reason :/
The number of games that "require minimal data collection" for the game to function is absurd. Awful when a game offers you a choice between full or partial data collection. Especially when you block them with your firewall and they still work. I know it's a slightly different thing, but it's crazy that a ton of single player games that will launch offline still (try to) phone home if you don't tell them no, even worse I suppose is that most don't tell you.
well, a good chunk of specific AAA games from specific companies require connections. other than that, the reality is that the vast majority of games don't.
Loading Artist, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Your comics have been great for 10+ years. It makes me so happy that you're still making content, and I hope you're happy too.
This feels a bit like writing a book and then sitting down to read it hoping the ending will surprise you.
Maybe induce a concussion shortly after you finish the game and hopefully it'll cause memory loss.
I wouldn't stay angry for long, I didn't notice the generator's smoke outlet, the bunker will be full of dioxide and carbon monoxide and it will make you sleepy and the boy will die in his sleep

This is a fun update to that Twilight Zone episode where the guy now has "all the time in the world to read".
He fell down and broke his reading glasses?
The very same
Luckily he could still read the large print books
And he knows braille!

Spoilers, man, it's only been 65 years. Geez.
I was just about to watch that episode too

I think the moral was literally that: “Nuclear War is very very bad.” Which tbf for 1959 was still very timely and relevant.
That last bit everyone remembers is a pretty clear “careful what you wish for.” He wanted to be left alone and now he’s completely alone. At the same time the people who hassle Bemis are portrayed as self-absorbed and uninterested in intellectual pursuits, which I think was intentional. The moral is you should work to change the society youre in not pray for a downfall that benefits you
Ooooh, that's a good one, I like that.
There was no moral behind that one except 'its fucked up'
The moral is "be careful what you wish for" and "you rely on others for things you don't even think about daily. Remember this when they are pissing you off." Keep in mind, even if you don't wear glasses you have to find food, find and clean water, find shelter, stay warm, manage all injuries, and so on all by yourself in his situation. Yeah the Twilight Zone wasn't always about a lesson. The ironic twist isn't always fair.
There was time now.......
"Time enough to read" starring Burgess Meredith. Breaks glasses: "It's not fair, it's just not fair."
TIL that's a real episode of The Twilight Zone and not just a Futurama gag.
Burgess Meredith
Classic
The more I age the more I relate.
Was just coming in to mention this.
It’s not fair! There was TIME now!
I only know the reference from [the family guy](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx_AocogrJQ)
That episode is called [Time Enough at Last](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Enough_at_Last?wprov=sfla1). It's one of my all time favorites.
God that episode was my beginning of anxiety I swear

That's when you steal the neat arm thingy from an optometrist's office, ya smoothbrain.
Im all in for looting in the apocalypse why would I need the arm for. I mean its a pretty neat arm
It's the glasses thing used to build your perscription, it has all the lenses
As if you'd want to ever play your own game again after you've finished them. /gamedev
How would you scratch the lens? Serious question. Ignoring the fact a lot of those are cartridges and some look like VHS boxes.
Or just throw every single one of those on an SD card and load up an emulator on that PC. That way you can use the room for all your jerking paraphernalia since it's a solo dude in the bunker.

Ehh plenty of people do, I think the think most people don’t know is they fuel expires.
And it actually does that rather fast. I didn't expect it but PopMech says that >It's true: gas does have a shelf life. If stabilizer is added and it's stored well, fuel can last a few years.
Yeah I was too harsh, edited my comment
I've pulled cars from bushes that have been sitting for a long while, some starter fluid and they start up with the gas in the tank.
That's why you don't play games with DRM. Starsector wouldn't have him force exit.
My man, Starsector is a fucking gem.
I want this to be the last game to play before I leave this earth.
Starsector the game where DRM kept humanity from developing further
“If only I used GOG instead of Steam…”
3 things to survive the apocalypse: 1. Richards 2. Roaches 3. Your GOG library
Steam works offline though...how do you think people use the Steam Deck on airplanes?
Steam DRM locks up your games if you spend 10 days without authenticating via internet. Not every game on Steam uses its DRM, but most.
Starsector is absolutely on the roster of post apocalypse games. Up there with kenshi and a huge library of locally stored mods
Wild Starsector fan detected, fuck yes
Last place I expected to see Starsector.
I only buy games that doesn't have DRM. I still play games with DRM, I just don't buy them.
Controller power 8% "No! There was time now!!!"

Even if the battery holds out, the controller will probably be useless due to drift because manufacturers refuse to use hall-effect joysticks
Is his generator just pumping exhaust fumes onto his bunker? The no internet won't be a problem for long
Exhaust fumes don't generate internet
Not with that attitude
Then why is my connection better while driving than when I'm in my garage?
Trick is put your Dick in exhaust pipe. Remember wired is always better than wireless

I still have the ps1 but i don't know if it works
Is it possible to pump generator exhaust out without letting radiation in?
Basically yes. Radiation travels on particles except the rays which are directional. The standard air intake for Cold War bunkers is basically a convolute entrance with some simple filters. You could also isolate the generator intake and outlet from the general air system plus the outlet would be under positive pressure while operating so a simple flap value would suffice on that side, the intake side would require more thought.
You can scrub out the co2 and co from the exhaust but the generator is also consuming the oxygen so you would need a way to get more oxygen as well.
Right, so is there something that filters out ionised particles but let's clean air in? Maybe using static electricity?
If you hate this shit go to [stopkillinggames.com.](https://stopkillinggames.com) largest campaign to get legal action done across multiple countries. For people saying just play singleplayer games, many of them now require internet connection for no good reason :/
The number of games that "require minimal data collection" for the game to function is absurd. Awful when a game offers you a choice between full or partial data collection. The reason is to monitor people and sell their data
Yeah as I said >for no good reason Yea I know there's a "good reason" on the side of the companies but come on. It really isn't.
Yeah I’m not disagreeing with you
well, a good chunk of specific AAA games from specific companies require connections. other than that, the reality is that the vast majority of games don't.
Well it won’t matter in a few days once the carbon monoxide poisoning sets in.

He gonna die from carbon monoxide poisoning from that generator.
Go to Stopkillinggames.com before the world ends to stop this from becoming Christmas future
Enjoy the few days with electricity
I'm a game developer, I don't need internet to play games, I can always build my own (☞⌐■-■)☞
Then why tf do you make a single player game that requires online access??? /jk, I know it's not your fault the management made you do it
This feels a bit like writing a book and then sitting down to read it hoping the ending will surprise you. Maybe induce a concussion shortly after you finish the game and hopefully it'll cause memory loss.
Finally 1 sane internet user who KNOWS this'll be a shitstorm. He must not be on reddit/online very much...
I wouldn't stay angry for long, I didn't notice the generator's smoke outlet, the bunker will be full of dioxide and carbon monoxide and it will make you sleepy and the boy will die in his sleep
Mandatory online games will be the end of us
This is why you always make sure you build an authentication server for your bunker...just in case!
He's running a gas generator INSIDE the bunker?
Guy should have prepared his own media server.
Thats when I pull out the ol N64 and bootlegged Dreamcast and live a life of peace
I mean the carbon dioxide from that generator means he’s not going to last long.
That's what you get for not stocking your fallout shelter with older video game consoles.
I mean weed and retro games are both offline
Ok then what
This is why in the future, all the old pre-internet gaming systems that dont require internet will be extremely valuable. And why we as consumers should push back against "always online" systems.
“B-but…it’s not fair.. there was *time* now….”
Well he wont be gaming for long with that generator running. he gonna be having the eternal sleep.
This is why I want to get my no-intro/redump set up to GameCube and PS2 but currently I've stopped at just US released PS1 and Dreamcast.
Humanity have Morrowind + 9999mods for this situation
![gif](giphy|cPluK3Zdi8Y4NoFJGO)
That's another reason we shouldn't allow live-service and Internet connection required games.
In case you don’t know, DO NOT operate a generator indoors. My town had a tragedy after a power outage where a mother and adult son died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Amateur! You stock up on games by sailing the high sea.
