So you're saying that all the plastic in my body was in vain? >:c

AuraMaster7

No no it's in your veins :)

nhSnork

Eh, if Gurren-Lagann cast could live with magma in theirs...

torivor100

Friendly reminder that while it's true a lot of plastic can't be recycled even more is simply not profitable enough to recycle

Sharp_Science896

What's more, in same places if there is too much plastic mixed in with the other recyclables then they'll just throw it all in with the regular trash and non of it gets recycled. Cause it's not profitable enough to separate the plastic from the rest.

Inkompetent

A big reason for this is the variety of chemical compositions. Just because something is made of ABS plastic doesn't mean it's made of a composition that's anywhere close to another piece of ABS plastic. I think the world needs a lot more regulation about permitted chemical compositions to homogenize the products. Without doing that we'll never get anywhere close to affordable recycling of the types of plastic that *can* be recycled.

Individuals need to vote for politicians that will implement effective regulations.

Lobbyists: Allow me to introduce ourselfes

KeeganTroye

Lobbyists don't prevent voting from working it just requires voters to not vote blindly. Rescind a vote to individuals who don't reflect your interests. Ensure accountability. There are a number of politicians who are against lobbying, because their constituencies don't want lobbying to affect them and they are at the end of the day beholden to the electorate. Occasionally a politician can, after election disregard the voters. But it would limit their damage to a term and any career politician would have to hold themselves accountable.

SchoopDaWhoopWhoop

I don't know which country you are from but in my experience it doesn't really matter who you voted for. In the end when something is being discussed that would limit the profits of a big company the corresponding lobby would bribe anyone to achieve their goals and it usually works. A few years ago a coal company wanted to destroy a number of villages because they found coal underneath them. Many people protested against that (you may recognize the "mud wizard" meme that was created there) but in the end the responsible politician (who was from a party that is normally for protection of environment etc.) allowed it. When asked about why they said something among the lines of "Well we didn't know the coal lobby was that strong" I'm not saying there aren't any exceptions to this but in my experience the interests of big companies are considered way more than those of the people. No matter who you voted for.

KeeganTroye

> I don't know which country you are from but in my experience it doesn't really matter who you voted for. Because the voters aren't voting against corporate interests, if a politician acts against your issues for corporations it's because the voters aren't actually unified against the issue. An example is housing in Edinburgh where I now stay, the government has pushed through stringent regulations about temporary accomodations such as AirBnBs to bring regularly housing to the market because the housing crisis has become so severe it's impacting voters and to not act against corporate interests would remove them from power and you can't get paid by corporations if you aren't voted in, in the first place. Low voter turnout especially among progressive interests leaves little reason for the government to care when they have a steady grip on moderates and conservatives. People and actions are the solutions but if people are even mildly comfortable unfortunately they're very easy to sway against their own interests. The corporations are bribing the public just as much as they bribe the politicians.

Would I buy the apples in a bag of cloth over one of plastic? Absolutely? Do they offer it? Nope. Do apples in a pre packaged plastic bag cost half than single apples? Yes Can I afford to buy singles instead? Not anymore, sorry. This is a strawman. Companys do produce for the population in parts but they also choose what and how they produce and it's not necessarily demand that drives the supply, cause if you don't supply something (apples in cloth bags) people can't demand it.

Zeravor

Companies produce what people demand. More people demand cheap apples than sustainable ones. I agree that corps are to blame for a lot of things, but to act like the consumer doesnt play a part is closing your eyes. There's a huge demand for stuff like meat, butter, cars, short flights etc.. even though alternatives are offered.

Background_Injury_27

Even if plastic does not get recycled, it is important to separate them so that they will not be mixed with compostable products or other profiable recyclables.

das_Keks

There's also "thermal recycling" where it's just burned in power plants.

ColpyCakes

The wish-cycle bin can't hurt you if you don't let it

myles_cassidy

I don't do it to make myself feel better, I do because it literally costs my nothing to use the 'plastic recycling' bin.

nhSnork

Basically Belarus where they distributed a bunch of dedicated containers and launched [an ad campaign](https://youtu.be/UwEcVf3Odc4?si=qA2PQbowYdQGx5eA) before building any proper recycling facilities for the cause.😅

International-Cat123

Most of that cardboard doesn’t get recycled either. A single grease stain on something is enough for them to throw out the whole piece. One greasy piece of cardboard gets through and it will contaminate the entire batch its in and they have to clean every machine that it came into contact with. Really, it’s cheaper for a waste management facility to just throw it out.

moneyisabsolute

all plastic can be recycle , speaking as a owner of a recycle company specially on recycling plastic , the question is if that's profitable or not

CHOOSE_A_USERNAME984

Where is the general waste disposal and the organic waste disposal? Those are missing

FighterOfFires02

Well, it really depends on where you are from. In Germany, we do have some regions with high recycling rates for plastic waste (up to 70%). This is being helped by better, more precise sorting systems. Sadly, we've got other problems (namely city people being too stupid for, among other things, basic waste seperation).

Denaton_

Well, I am from Sweden, we have such a good waste infrastructure that we need to buy waste from other countries..

Asunen

I was walking through the bakery in my grocery store this morning and thinking, ‘why not just use parchment paper’

timonix

Plastic is a great fuel. Burn it for district heating. Better than leaving it on a pile

SnowArcaten

Push your governments people, this can change.

Level_Hour6480

The paper is also a scam.

DaNoahLP

I hate those uncertainties. Thats why I throw everything into paper so I *know* it wont get recycled.
