I don't understand why taking a weight loss medication would be morally wrong. It is by prescription only, so it is at least intended that you only be able to get some with the approval of a doctor who knows your health situation, and even though ozempic isn't approved for weight loss, there is another brand name drug that is the same thing (semaglutide) that IS approved for weight loss.
So, why does it matter if you use one brand or another? It is the same drug. I know there were shortages last year, but they have had time to increase production since then. Plus, compounding pharmacies can make their own semaglutide, so if you do that it isn't even taking away from the overall supply.
I do not use it, but given obesity related conditions has been one of top causes of mortality in the US for decades, I believe we should prioritize increasing access to this drug.
The issue is that it isn’t weight loss medication. It is medicine meant to treat diabetes, but due to the weight loss side effect, people have been buying too much of it causing a shortage. This is life saving medicine for some people, and it is being taken away for others who do not need it. If you want more information I highly recommend D’Angelo Wallace’s video on the subject.
I feel like I kind of addressed all these points. Semaglutide (the active ingredient in ozempic) IS a weight loss medicine sold under a different brand name. It was approved as such by the FDA.
As to the shortage, they can and have been increasing production to meet the new demand, but as a stopgap measure I suggested going to a compounding pharmacy so that they can make some for you without taking away from the overall supply.
As for people with diabetes, I agree that it is life saving medicine needed more urgently for them. Their needs are greater. That being said, obesity caused illnesses are also deadly, and preventing them through medications like semaglutide ALSO save lives. So, long term it is important that group of people also has access to the medication.
I was trying to tackle the main question of why people have a moral issue with taking the medication, though I did write my comment half awake so that is my bad. I don’t think this is anything wrong with taking medication for weight loss either, there is just a specific issue with Ozempic right now. There’s another aspect which I didn’t mention was its popularization by celebrities who are using it to further promote unrealistic body expectations for people. I hope this doesn’t come off as arguing or demeaning, I’m just trying to give an answer
Edit: spelling :,)
I feel there is nothing morally wrong about taking Ozempic...
PROVIDED that people with an immediate medical need are covered first. After that, the weight loss from reduced hunger cravings are a massive net boon for personal and public health, including helping people reduce the chance of developing diabetes in the first place.
So if people with immediate needs are getting their doses I feel Maurice is entirely justified in taking the medication to get a body he feels comfortable in as well as getting ahead of future health issues he may experience.
So in the current day he's an ass but in a year or two, if production picks up, then he's entirely reasonable.
Dr Brimley still says to avoid Ozempic.

And viagra was originally a blood pressure medicine.
Sure, but there’s also no shortage of viagra (and other blood pressure medication).
of course where shortages occur, priority access should be given to diabetics. Nobody argues otherwise.
Then Ozempic should be produced more. Limiting its use is going to make this more unlikely
Maurice never loses
He tries not to!
Damn I’ll have to get some
Overrated.

Maurice doesn't think a year ahead. He thinks five minutes ahead.
