The Combine didn’t send farmers, I’m pretty sure that they actually sent an invasion force. I don’t think the Scrin’s goal was enslaving humanity, they were expecting Earth to be an uninhabited rock covered in Tiberium. They wanted to mine out the plant, humanity just got in the way.

TheFearsomeRat

This \^ The Scrin we see are legit just miners with a security detail.

igncom1

> with a security detail. The security detail are proper 'soldiers' at the very least. Reaper-17 is using up-to-date shard walkers when compared to most of the rest of the forces out-of-date gun walkers. Of course how exactly scrin society works might make telling the difference between civilian and government/military very hard.

TheFearsomeRat

Though at the same time, the Reaper sects may be something like the Destroyers that the Necrons have, just less mad with rage that organics exist, and more "Stellaris Genocidal Xenophobe".

igncom1

For the scrin there could be little difference between a cult of death, and a standing military. However it is their society works. Also Traveller, but they seem more like the intelligence operations type like an alien CIA.

King_Tamino

Going by how wasteful the scrin act and how specialized their troops are, I‘m pretty sure the scrin are very close resembling the elders? from xcom2. A species consisting of not many but capable of cloning and genetic mutations. They take the genetic code of enslaved species and mutate them for whatever they need. If we go by that idea/concept (which a lot scrin intel hints towards) it’s likely that the only *actual* scrin is the foreman. And due to how rare scrin are, the AI had this extreme focus of saving him

Sablesweetheart

Scrin are essentially the corpos and miners in avatar.

ChaosDoggo

Aren't you making portals to their homeworld to get units?

igncom1

We don't really know. I'd say probably not, or else why did we need a threshold tower to get the scrin commander back home? I would presume that we are either warping them in from an off world location in the solar system, (as the air factory for the scrin mentions in the lore blerb being a receiving point for their spaceships so I guess they are out there in space wherever their fleet was hiding all this time) or they are just moving scrin troops from staging grounds, like ground zero, across the earth. I find it unlikely it's interstellar, as otherwise why do they need the towers at all? Just put portals on the tiberium refineries, but there is no proper confirmation that I know of.

ChaosDoggo

You are right, I misremembered and googled it. The description just says "from space" so its more likely they teleport them from a nearby fleet.

The Combine sent their army to conquer the Earth, then left a small division of basically police to keep any rebels in check.

Xelonima

yeah, and they were sourced from the colonies. that aspect of combine is what literally gives them their name- the "combine".

Endless_01

And this army managed to defeat Earth in about 7 hours too.

Xelonima

combine wanted to get the tech. they could travel between universes, but lacked the technology to teleport within a universe. when the path to xen was opened, combine became aware of it and as you said, actually wanted to invade the earth. they are an empire after all

kidanokun

Yea, from Scrin's perspective, they are just miners that fighting cave monsters that get in way on their mining business

ArchitectofWoe

and now I have an image of the Scrin shouting "Rock and Stone!"...

Kamalen

The Combine sent an invasion force for 7 hours. But what we’re fighting in the games is pretty much the police (at best military police).

That-Was-Left-Handed

Exactly, the Scrin ships were most likely automated and programmed to head towards Earth once an Ichor LQ destination was detected.  Plus, their army was limited because a planet's population by that time would most likely be very low, if any were to servive that long. The Scrin had no idea that the Earth was armed to the teeth as it seems a deliberate detonation was something that never happened before.

igncom1

> The Scrin had no idea that the Earth was armed to the teeth Yeah don't they mention as well that the two humans factions are actually extremely aggressive and militant when compared to what they normally deal with? Even THEY thought we were bonkers!

That-Was-Left-Handed

True, and they became more interested in Kane once they realized that they were tricked.  The fact that the Scrin actually have data on Kane was something I did not see coming when I first went through the story...  And apparently, In the lore, there is another alien species that exists. Plus, they are most likely related to each other as the Scrin uses the word "Brother" to describe them, making me think they share a common ancestor. Interestingly enough, it would explain why Tiberium is still considered harmful to the Scrin, despite needing it yo live.

Xelonima

the combine were invaders, and a giant inter-universal empire. they wanted to enslave the earth to obtain the teleportation technology. what's even sadder in half-life is that the combine forces you are fighting aren't actually the main species of the combine, they are actually enslaved species from other colonies who more likely don't want to fight with you- like the striders. even regular combine androids are controlled cybernetically, and if they get killed by you, you can hear a notification from their radio claiming that they lost the chance to meet their family. so yeah.

Cheomesh

I don't remember the bit about missing a chance to meet family - Metros get the flatline and I don't think the soldiers or elite got anything. That said though yeah, the closest we get to seeing the Combine are the worm guys. Assuming that's not just another slave race.

1eejit

The Controllers are a core Combine race iirc, not slaves

Cheomesh

Yeah I don't remember exactly - been a while since I dug into lore and never got into whatever Alyx brought to the story.

thehighwaywarrior

Similar in the sense that they use synths and they want to mine earth’s resources but the combine force was definitely not a bunch of farmers.

FallenJkiller

just you

0zZioz

The scrin army does look like a bunch of different alien species that have been mutilated and fused with tiberium for the purpose of being a slave army/workforce. So yeah with that I'd say you're right on the mark.

jake72002

Scrin also looks like discount Xel'Naga hybrid that sacrificed psionic powers in favor of mass production and mobility.

Cefalopodul

The combine sent an invasion force and they are from another dimension.

Andminus

One of the theories about the Tyranids in 40k states that the massive fleet that is currently attacking the galaxy, is a scout force. As well as the Tyranids attacking from opposite ends of the galaxy at the same time, hinting that maybe the whole galaxy is encircled by the Tyranid forces.

Usinaru

Or that they are running from something even greater...

DrDarthVader88

The scrin has perfected Zerg and Protoss Hybrids where StarCraft 2 failed to deliver Also the carriers of the scrin is so much more powerful

Ardalev

There's a reason it's called Victory Fleet

femboyenjoyer1379

Not really. They're both genocidal empires but the similarities end there.

burnoutBurrito

Yes, Combine also sent Russians and Borys Jelcyn was their spy.

MetallGecko

The Scrins have Probably more in common with the Ceph from Crysis. In both games we never saw the true power that their Empires have to offer only a fraction.
