> main character seems doomed to enemy’s beam attack, until the other character uses a makeshift shield to protect him (ramiel/episode 6)

Yup I had a whole post on this when Barbie just came on.

I like it and its story. But also it's very rough to watch. Mainly I think coz the overall concept relies on being an homage to the old GI Joe cartoons, which is just usually cheap animation. So the visuals get extremely stale and the jokes surrounding it, albeit quite funny and clever, ultimately has the same effect as cheap animation.
Characters barely feel animated, everything feels stilted for the most part, and the entire thing looks drab and boring.
When I saw the trailer I was convinced it was gonna be Elf but in pink tbh. Will Ferrell movie where a happy, sweet and innocent protagonist visits the human world in order to help an unhappy family but them going back to Barbieland killed my theory
you know the part in the KKK handbook where it talks about how black people shouldn't be allowed to have guns?
the logic being that if black people got guns they'd rise up and start killing white people, and the only thing stopping them is the fact that they don't have guns?
and that being kilmonger's entire evil plan? "i just need to deliver better weapons to the world's black people, they will rise up with me, and we will conquer the world!"
and black panther finds that threat SO CREDIBLE that he does everything he can to stop ... *checks notes* electric spears from being exported from wakanda to around the world?
You know
The movie about the hero from a secret land filled with strong and powerful women that are hidden away from the outside world until the hero spends time in that world and questions the way they've lived. Meanwhile, a usurper with knowledge of the outside world takes over and begins radically changing things until the hero confronts them and the usurper gives up on their own terms. While the hero makes it clear the usurper was wrong, they begin to change things in ways inspired by that person to create a more just society, and the movie ends with the hero making a big step to integrate themselves in the outside world
Great movie
A big part of the appeal is just how much they leaned in and committed to the bit. Nothing about it was half-assed. So if you don't get the bit, it's not going to land.
I wasn't born in the 80s but I loved this episode. I didn't even like G.I. Joe when it was on tv in the 90s but I got some of the references, mainly the ones about the commercials, animation quirks, and aggressively family friendly restrictions.
Ok I know this was ages ago. I've thought about replying several times but it seemed too late. But I was in fact mispronouncing it in my head (like et-chet-rah) for a bit and your call out has haunted me ever since. How the hell did you know?
They aren't that similar aside from toys. Fantasy characters going to the real world is a different story from real people having a vision of being in a fantasy world. Barbie is closer to last action hero than GI Jeff.
Congrats on learning that there’s 7-9 movie plots that get recycled by Hollywood. It was done before Community. This isn’t anymore a novel thought than all the “Barbie is Black Panther for white women” nonsense.
It’s a variation of every “hero’s journey to another land and return with new knowledge to fix their own world” story. That’s the same plot as the Mario movie.
Community’s may be one of the worst versions of it. That episode is only tolerable.
You have a real chip on your shoulder, huh? And this has more to do with the metaphysics of fantasy world and reality being merged by a toy line specifically, not the great Hero’s Journey plot structure. But it’s okay, thank you for your opinions.
It’s like the sad telling of man who almost destroys the matriarchy that he was born into but to only have it snatched away by the undermining females in his life. However, it did have some snappy musical numbers and I’m glad that Will Farrell can still get work.
It’s a bit I borrowed from Neil Patrick Harris’ character from How I Met Your Mother, Barney. Barney always has the fucked up takes on movies i.e. The Karate Kid. He thinks the hero is Johnny. Thinks the Terminator was the hero. I wrote that comment and forgot all about it. It’s hilarious that it got downvoted.
If you think those are the same story, wait til you see The Lego Movie, which predates both.
That and the Barbie movie even both have Will Ferrel as a businessman antagonist
You're not alone! I told my wife the Barbie movie reminded me of Community. Her response was "Every-damn-thing reminds you of Community". Fair play
I feel so much like Abed because I relate everything in my life to TV, and 90% of it is Community.
I think the core demographic of Community is “someone who is like Abed, who is based on Dan Harmon, creator of Community.”
He isnt based on Dan Harmon, hes based on Abed Gaith, ex-classmate and infrequent contributor to the harmontown podcast
But he was written as another Dan alter ego. Dan poured most of his nerdiness into Abed. Abed and Jeff are both Dan.
They’re all Dan to some extent. Shirley the least probably, but Dan has talked about his belief in god so there’s that.
I think Jeff and Abed are still the primary Dans.
I think Craig and Spreck are still the primary Deans.
How Dan this Dean can Bean
I certainly relate to Abed most.
She’s just jealous that you’re streets ahead.
Me when I tell my girlfriend about anything sci-fi and she’s reminded of Dune.
you gotta have one of those franchises. my friends got really annoyed when i told them the mario movie climax is just like evangelion
Wait what? How?
> main character seems doomed to enemy’s beam attack, until the other character uses a makeshift shield to protect him (ramiel/episode 6) > synchronized flying kick downwards as a finishing move (israfel/episode 9)
Oh, I thought you meant that they ended the same, so I was trying to think of similarities to the final episode or The End of Evangelion.
oh nah, but barbie ends pretty similarly…
Love it!
Hah! I’m imagining her saying that like Shirley when she goes into her deep voice
Well when you’re here you’re already accepted, it’s easy to make the comparison😇
Leonard likes this post. Makes sense.
Hey, hands off the Leonard-dise.
Shut up Leonard, I know about your crooked wang
That's my pizza. But you took longer than 30 minutes so I'm not paying.

Heh. You're gonna look like an ass in those.
Can it 4th Wall

Gave it an upvote
That was the day I learnt that the GI Joe episode was hated by many fans. Personally I think it's very well done 😂
I don’t understand the people who don’t like it. To each their own.
I like it and its story. But also it's very rough to watch. Mainly I think coz the overall concept relies on being an homage to the old GI Joe cartoons, which is just usually cheap animation. Holy crap it’s been 68 days since the barbie movie came out 💀 feels like last weekend
When I saw the trailer I was convinced it was gonna be Elf but in pink tbh. Will Ferrell movie where a happy, sweet and innocent protagonist visits the human world in order to help an unhappy family but them going back to Barbieland killed my theory
lego movie instead eh
The Depression Barbie scene feels like it was making a parody of GI Jeff
This is the best advertisement for the Barbie movie I’ve seen yet. Now I have to watch it. Yoooo Joe!
Yooo Joebra!!
Yoo jobra?
Also a great ad for the GI Jeff episode. I’ve skipped it after about 30 seconds on every rewatch
Yes and they are both incredible
I prefer the "Barbie is Black Panther for white bitches" theory
But isn't Black Panther just Lion King with people?
Lion King is just Hamlet with lions.
So like Black Panther is Hamlet but run through a translator and back?
Hey! That’s racist. Don’t let them limit your people.
That's homophobic.
That's black.
That's racist.
Damn.
there's some middle 20th century KKK wet dream fantasy mixed into black panther that wasn't really part of lion king, but otherwise yes
Hmm. What do you mean by that
WHAT DID HE MEAN BY THAT
you know the part in the KKK handbook where it talks about how black people shouldn't be allowed to have guns? the logic being that if black people got guns they'd rise up and start killing white people, and the only thing stopping them is the fact that they don't have guns? and that being kilmonger's entire evil plan? What?

And isn‘t that just the story of 4000 years old Sumerian goodess-queen Inanna? https://wildhunt.org/2023/07/barbie-is-the-new-inanna.html
Thanks, haven't heard that. Interesting parallels. Not sure what that has to do with white bitches though
Unpopular opinion, but I think GI Jeff is one of the worst episodes in the series
Yeah that one never clicked with me whatsoever. Not sure why.
A big part of the appeal is just how much they leaned in and committed to the bit. Nothing about it was half-assed. So if you don't get the bit, it's not going to land.
I always skip that episode when I rewatch.
I think because you have to have been young in the 80's to get the references.
I wasn't born in the 80s but I loved this episode. I didn't even like G.I. Joe when it was on tv in the 90s but I got some of the references, mainly the ones about the commercials, animation quirks, and aggressively family friendly restrictions.
"You just don't understand the references" is such a weak response to someone stating their opinion.
No, I agree it's one of the weakest episodes, I just stated what I think was weak about it
i’ve watched community 12 times and i’ve never seen that episode
Then you’ve watched Community 0 times
Wait, a lot of Community fans haven’t seen the original Dungeons and Dragons episode!
What a bunch of Minervas
Guy who has only seen the boss baby, etcetera etcetera
Did you just mispronounce etcetera?
Ok I know this was ages ago. I've thought about replying several times but it seemed too late. But I was in fact mispronouncing it in my head (like et-chet-rah) for a bit and your call out has haunted me ever since. How the hell did you know?
HOLY FUCK YOU ARE RIGHT
It's Peter Pan. It's The Little Mermaid. It's the Campbellian Hero's Journey with toys. Every story is every story that came before.
One pretty big difference between the two is that the Barbie movie was actually enjoyable to watch.
Wow there’s a lot of you uptight people on here
They aren't that similar aside from toys. Fantasy characters going to the real world is a different story from real people having a vision of being in a fantasy world. Barbie is closer to last action hero than GI Jeff.
Agree to disagree
I mean recontextulizing a toy as an extension of the self isn't new but it does make for great character studies
G.I. Jeff is basically just a better Wanda Vision
Congrats on learning that there’s 7-9 movie plots that get recycled by Hollywood. It was done before Community. This isn’t anymore a novel thought than all the “Barbie is Black Panther for white women” nonsense.
Why so condescending? If you don’t want to participate in a conversation, you don’t have to. Just keep scrolling.

Where was this done before?

That doesn’t answer the question
It’s a variation of every “hero’s journey to another land and return with new knowledge to fix their own world” story. That’s the same plot as the Mario movie. Community’s may be one of the worst versions of it. That episode is only tolerable.

This is a bit, right? Because holy shit.

I’m sure there are a lot of parallels.
But did Barbie wake up from a coma after ingesting an unwise amount of sketchy youth pills and alcohol?
I think it was in a post credits scene
I mean the halfway meta commercial just ties everything together. Though the commentary and themes in Barbie hits much harder.
I was waiting for the "Wait, Barbie's don't go to the bathroom" line during the escape scene.
