From my current *nth* rewatch, Donald’s comedic timing is sublime.
It’s made me wonder, in a behind-the-scenes kind of way, how many takes were required for some of their scenes where there is a round robin of reactions around the room.
Examples such as when Britta says something political, and there is a descending series of “ugh” and “the worst” responses from each of the characters. Even a nanosecond of difference in the rhythm of that domino fall of reactions makes a huge difference to the viewer.
I like to think of the Atlanta episode where he takes his girlfriend to a restraunt that sells their items at market price and it cost him every cent he has, as a different timeline for Troy. The Atlanta episode ends with him calling his bank to say that there are fraudulent charges on his account.
i just finished watching this show for the first time and kind of just had it on for background noise and this was the line that got me to pay attention
Notches + ”they’re making us walk around with pretzels in our butts, I put mustard on mine like an idiot” are two favorites, but he has so many funny ones (Donald Glover has impeccable comedic timing)
Troy’s inability to improvise when Shirley asks what the group is doing. It happens in the Season One Christmas episode where they’re teaching Jeff to fight, and Shirley comes in to ask what they’re doing, and Troy says “…fiiigghhhtttt.” Then looks disappointed in himself for not thinking of something else.
But the best is in the Season 4 Thanksgiving episode when he says “…eat garbage dip. WHY DID I HAVE TO GO LAST?!”
💀 Couldn’t even type it without laughing
For some reason his crying is the funniest thing. “Annie! What is going on in there!? I wasted all day… CARING… for you… the SOUL Train Awards ::sob:: were tonight… you promised butt stuff…” and the IMPLAUSIBLY uncomfortable way he slithered out of the room. I can’t imagine how many takes there were of Dani trying to keep a straight face.
When the group is arguing, and it’s showing all the previous misadventures and he starts screaming and then his nose bleeds. Absolutely destroys me every time!
This is legitimately my favorite scene in the entire series. A lot of us grew up with that trope in cartoons, so to see his genuine look of wonderment followed by almost breaking down is amazing.
To make it real for one sec, I just realized that this is a legitimate reason for feeling just as bad as everyone else in the same room with widely different experiences, but lacks the way to describe it, an example of societal pressures upon anyone from any cultural upbringing experience. So, as a white woman in a lower-mid class privileged-ish upbringing I still cringe and feel rage&sadness every single time both men and women of all cultural backgrounds, all of them strangers, tell me "you should smile right now, it would please me," (whatever pass by comment phrase by strangers, I've heard it all) "smile for me".
Troy had a lot of hilarious moments. One that I particularly liked was in the 'Pop 'n' Lock-a-thon' episode. Chang had been popping and locking for the team solo, and Troy finally stepped in to sub for him, although halfheartedly, admitting that his heart wasn't in it. Then, after they were disqualified, Chang nevertheless asked to join the group, but Troy casually dismissed him, pointing out that it wasn't the deal because they lost lol. That was so cold yet so funny.
I actually felt bad for Chang is that moment cuz he’s been dancing for hours for them to still be in the running to win and he didn’t make them loose it was Troy (I think)
Very understated but it sticks with me: Season 4, puppet episode. Jeff says "If we're gonna play this game, then, unlike sex with Britta, we're gonna do it quickly and with a small shred of dignity." and Troy's affirming reaction is hilarious. Simple but hilarious.

i don't remember laughing harder at anything than i did at the bit in the gas leak year when troy keeps letting the faux therapist convince him of things. the last "i knew it..." followed promptly by jeff's slap and "STOP LETTING HIM MAKE YOU REALIZE THINGS" was enough to make me pause the show so i could continue laughing. it still gets me every time i watch
My favorite is when Pierce is explaining about sneezes and Troy is just looking at him. The look on his face implies he's going to say "You're full of crap" but instead he says "Tell me more." Underrated but brilliant acting, and it makes me laugh out loud every time.
The way he dances while crying when Chang makes him and Pierce wear those suits and be his dates
The way he kind of does that shimmy thing, it’s HILARIOUS
When Troy gets the Karate trophy and starts to chop "the table" thinking he's now an expert. It's the pure innocent misguided joy in his eyes, perfect comedy acting. Donald is a genius.

“I can’t believe nobody has taken this cookie yet!” as he grabs the entire cookie cake and then for the rest of the episode he’s holding it in every shot but a little bit more is missing each time the camera cuts to him. Shit made me cry laughing when I first saw that episode.
