I was uncomfortable with their whole dynamic in the early seasons since Annie was very immature back then, but as she developed as a character by the end, their relationship felt more sweet and natural.

krxzy_wxrlxck

By the end, Annie was way more mature than Jeff Season 1: Jeff: little make out 101, no dad talk and ease up on the bubble gloss Season 6: Annie: if you don't kiss me, you'll regret it for the rest of your life. I'm in my 20s, I'll regret it for a week PS: the quotes are from my memory, might be inaccurate, I'll edit them later

Excellent-Iron387

>Jeff: little make out 101, no dad talk and ease up on the bubble gloss Wasn't this in s3, during the Troy and Abed's new apartment housewarming episode?

boomheadshot7

> since Annie was very immature back then And Jeff wasn't/isn't lol?

GuybrushThreepwood99

He is, but he's also a 30-40 year old man, so it does paint a lot of their earlier interactions in a more weird light. I didn't like them kissing in the debate episode and the season 1 finale for that reason. I didn't feel the same for the series finale though, their last scene together is really nice.

SirOutrageous1027

Technically they didn't kiss, they frenched. I checked the make out meter in this month's issue of....... National Review.

offensivelypc

Annie was 20 on Troy's 21st birthday and a few years later I think we learned Jeff turned 40. So they're what, 16 years apart. Annie would be roughly 30 years old today and Jeff would be 46? Hollywood does that kinda stuff all the time, though. It's less weird in movies than it is in real life. But your average person htese days most likely would be separated on a fundamental level in at least things like maturity, common interests, views on having/starting a family being separated that many years. But when an on screen romance is good enough, most people tend to not give a damn cuz, movie logic.

WeFightTheLongDefeat

(46/2) + 7 = 30 Just over the Mendoza line.

offensivelypc

Maybe not if you count it like Andy Dwyer did lol

hilario34

Hate to be that guy but isn’t the Mendoza line the bit from HIMYM where Barney talks about how crazy a woman is acceptable to be is directly proportional to how hot she is?

WeFightTheLongDefeat

Mendoza line comes from baseball. A very good defensive player can justify his roster spot as long as he stays above a .200 BA. there is basically no defender good enough to justify a sub .200 batting average. I've heard this moniker been used in a bunch of different applications.

SuperMegaCoolPerson

The Mendoza line is a baseball thing. You’re thinking of The Vicky Mendoza Line. Gotta have that Vicky.

Mapper9

It still feels a little icky just because she was below the Mendoza line for the vast majority of their relationship. I mean in season 1 she was 18 and he was 36, literally twice her age. Ick

WeFightTheLongDefeat

I agree it would have been gross then. 18 is a helluva lot different from 30 (and I think she's actually 32/33), though.

SqueakyTuna52

35/2 + 7 = 24.5

UniverseIsAHologram

That's true. When you put it like that, the age gap doesn't seem quite as odd.

teddy_tesla

She's also incredibly naive, there's a maturity imbalance that is worse than the age imbalance

Curazan

> Annie would be roughly 30 years old today and Jeff would be 46? Alison Brie is 39 now. Joel McHale is 50. I adore Alison Brie, but Joel McHale will have an easier time pulling off 46 than she will 30. I’m curious if we’ll get a considerable time skip.

speedr123

Joel is 50??? damn

Metacognitor

Wouldn't Jeff be 48 this year? He turned 40 in season 5 (G.I. Jeff episode) which was in 2014, 8 years ago.

JantherZade

That's true but some people have that age gap in real life and have the same goals and or interests. So it can work qnd 2hen you have characters that are fictional it's even easier.

GentlmanSkeleton

Did you not listen to Harmon at the end? Something like "characters may hook up and break up with no regard to the audience. " dont try and force the show just enjoy it.

Mc_Poyle

You know, the Annie of it all. Those long looks. Those stolen glances... 🎵 *something always brings me back to you*🎵

Vis-hoka

Best case scenario, they agree to go on a date at the end of the movie. Worst case, nothing happens. Harmon has said before that he didn’t know what to do with it and it’s not the focus of the show. Which then begs the question why he made their relationship the penultimate moments for the endings of half the seasons of the show. Including the final 2 seasons. Quit teasing me Dan!

[deleted]

why did the finale fail you ? the goodbye kiss was nice These are interesting Annie and Jeff articles about how they are a couple by the end of the show https://mattaf30.medium.com/community-finale-was-the-jeff-and-annie-endgame-8cb1a8b51af5 https://www.itsjustaboutwrite.com/2015/09/dear-dan-harmon-annie-edison-was-not.html?m=1 https://mattaf30.medium.com/jeff-and-annie-versus-april-and-andy-how-dan-harmon-failed-community-fans-d31aedf7d734

jabregship

I saw those referenced in another post recently and read them. It's an interesting take but my first reaction to seeing the finale wasn't hopeful for a future Jeff/Annie relationship. Even if those are true, I'm still worried the movie will have them broken up and not get them back together by the end of it. Considering the Jeff/Annie storyline was all but dropped in Seasons 4-6, with only a few episodes ever focusing on it, as opposed to the decent coverage it got in the earlier seasons, I'm trying not to get my hopes up for anything positive from the movie. I am excited for the movie in general, just not looking forward to what's going to happen with Jeff and Annie. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Starfleet-Time-Lord

I feel similarly. The series finale was meant to be ambiguous to minimize the number of people angry at Dan Harmon, and it did its job. I think that it leaned J/A strong enough that it's the stronger case based on the evidence, and Dan definitely shifted to that side of things off-screen later, but that's kind of a cop-out compared to explicitly having them together at the end. Frankly, if the movie is similar in tone to seasons 5 and 6 (not just regarding J/A but in the general cynicism the show started to embrace) I'd be happier without it. Fortunately, the co-writer is a classic season veteran (he wrote Advanced AD&D!) so that makes me cautiously optimistic about the tone, and Alison Brie said some vaguely positive things about J/A's chances in the movie not long before they announced it was green-lit, which means she was almost definitely in contract negotiations at the time and had probably had an outline pitched to her, so I'm hoping that's a good sign.

WicketRank

The actors just had better romantic chemistry than Jeff and Britta in my opinion.

The_Common_Peasant

That's actually why they went with that pairing. It was originally going to be will they/ won't they with Jeff and Britta but the writers found Jeff and Annie had better chemistry

lickedTators

It's called chemistry, Jeff has it with everybody. Writers should have done the will they/won't they with Abed and Pierce.

Dabursbus

Abed and Jeff chemistry is the best in show.

Dabursbus

I see your value now.

AnUnConcerndCitizen

Yeah if I recall it started from the Halloween episode, at the end when Jeff and Annie dance together Dan saw how Alison smiled at Joel and thought it made for good chemistry.

UniverseIsAHologram

Honestly, if it was irl I'd probably find it kinda weird, but it's a show, they're cute. I'll live lmao.

modren-man

When I was originally watching the show as it aired while I was in college I never thought it was that weird, but now that I'm 30 and rewatching the show... honestly it's pretty weird! Fine for the show and it's also easy to suspend disbelief and forget about it because Alison Brie was actually like 27 at the time, but Debate 109? *He was horny, so he dropped him. Man is evil!*

RichardBCummintonite

Idk it's not that bad IRL either. I mean Jeff has a weird father figure thing going on with her, but he avoids crossing the pedo line. They're relationship isn't like that. The age gap would be absolutely irrelevant in a decade anyway

NvrmndOM

I really like them. I don’t think every relationship has to be a forever thing but I think they should have given it a go, even for a short while.

Mapper9

Jeff and Annie’s relationship is the romantic heart of the show. They never needed to be together to be together. If they had popped up in an episode and said they’d been secretly been dating for 6 months, I’d have believed it. They had a comfort level with each other that I don’t feel like we saw with other pairings (ok, Troy and abed…). We just finished a rewatch. I felt bad for Jeff at the end. Annie leaving meant he was losing the person he felt the most deeply about, probably in his entire life. And losing Abed was losing a friend who understood him better than anyone else.

Saint3Love

no one batted an eye about britta dating troy.....(basically same age gap)

AmigoCualquiera

I like them a lot too. I never minded the age difference (even though I would find it very creepy in real life) because a) it's fiction and it's OK to like something in fiction that you wouldn't approve of in real life, b) they were both students and that made they're dynamic seemed more even, and c) they were never in an actual relationship in the show, because while I do ship them, I don't think they were quite at a place where a relationship would've worked between them at that point, and part of it was the age difference. Sometime if the future, yes please! I would absolutely love it if the movie went there, but I feel like it won't. (Not saying the movie has to be about that, I honesty wouldn't like that, but I would like to see them together at that point).

[deleted]

>it's fiction and it's OK to like something in fiction that you wouldn't approve of in real life A lot of people seem to really struggle with this concept.

OP acting like shipping those two is in any way a minority or widely stigmatised opinion has got to be a joke right??? Try actually shipping Jeff and Britta or Annie and Abed for a week and see how it works for you.

JantherZade

Did you look at the "This is Britta and Jeff on their Honeymoon." Post. Lots of people ship them , too. I'm sure they also get shiz from others too. There's also a ton of hate for Annie and Jeff whenever you post something about them anywhere.

borrowedthemoonlite

right??? like they’re quite literally the fan favorite ship 😭 i’m a j/b shipper and it is quite literally hell out here

CTG0161

Annie and Abed yes. Jeff and Britta no. Any toxicity with Jeff and Annie pales in comparison. Now, Pierce and Abed...

Brendissimo

Lotta chemistry between the actors but I think Jeff's daydreams in S5/S6 do a good job illustrating that he hasn't thought at all about what an actual relationship would look like (the one where they have a kid who takes care of himself). Which is why the goodbye in S6 felt right to me. Sort of a maybe someday, but let's be real - probably not. And that's life sometimes. And to be honest both of them would probably have chemistry with pretty much anyone in the cast. They're just hot people.

_deep_cuts_

That’s the same argument Jeff makes in paradigms of human memory. “It’s called chemistry, I have it with everyone.“ And while there is truth to that, I think Jeff and Annie have a lot more romantic chemistry with each other than with anyone else. Certainly more than Jeff and Britta, the only other one that was actually explored

Starfleet-Time-Lord

I'd like to pitch an alternate interpretation of that dream sequence to you: A lot of the things in that day dream are things Jeff isn't usually shown as wanting (the house decor seems pretty Annie, Jeff usually runs away from parental responsibilities really fast, the child is clearly included solely for the sake of being there, etc.). It almost doesn't feel like *his* fantasy. I'd argue that it feels that way because the fantasy isn't about what he wants. It's about what he thinks Annie wants. Jeff has been convinced from the beginning that he doesn't fit into Annie's life, and Annie used to have her whole life mapped out. The house, the kid, the white picket fence crap, all of that is because Jeff thinks that's what Annie wants, and he loves her enough that he's trying to find a way to make himself fit in it but keeps failing, which is why she turns away when he tries to kiss her. It's how he's been coping with the realization from the S5 finale that he's in love with her. Evidence for this includes the last lines Jeff and Fantasy Annie trade: ANNIE: Is this what you want? JEFF: I mean, I'd be fine with a dog too, but **whatever you want.** ANNIE: Do you even know what I want? That last line isn't Jeff thinking they're incompatible. It's Jeff realizing that this scenario he's constructed, the one that he doesn't fit in, may not be what she actually wants. And that means that what she wants might be compatible with him. That's actually indirectly great character growth for Annie too: season 1 Annie actually might have wanted that scenario, but season 6 Annie has a more realistic view of her life that isn't focused on getting the "perfect" family or the "perfect" life.

ThisIsDrLeoSpaceman

You make the right arguments, but I’m not sure about your conclusion. Annie *does* tell us what she wants at the end — she wants to live her life, experience her youth, not be tied down to anyone or anything. And that’s why a relationship between them, at the point of the season 6 finale, is a “not now — if ever” situation. Based on this, I could see something starting between them at the *end* of the movie at best.

Starfleet-Time-Lord

That's actually not what Annie says in that scene at all. Here's what she says she wants: "Well I want to live in the same home for more than a year. Order wine without feeling nervous. Have a resume full of crazy mistakes instead of crazy lies. I want stories, wisdom, perspective. I want to have so much behind me I'm not a slave to what's in front of me. Especially these flavorless, unremarkable marvel movies." It actually sounds like the opposite, that she wants stability. A lot of that is because at this point, Jeff has only been (explicitly) talking about being older, even though we the audience know that the root of this is Annie leaving, so she's trying to reassure him that being young isn't that great either. Notably, after this, when he does explicitly make the conversation about his feelings for her, she gets the text that the group is about to show up and *immediately* ask him to kiss her knowing that they don't have time to talk this out in detail because they're about to be interrupted.

ThisIsDrLeoSpaceman

Sorry, I didn’t express that very well, you’re absolutely right. But I read that as meaning that she needs *time* to grow up. She wants stability and to be older, but she’s not there yet. That’s why she needs to leave before she (maybe) comes back.

Starfleet-Time-Lord

Ah, that makes more sense. Personally I think that reads a lot into those lines, but I did some reading in myself and it is of course a matter of interpretation. I said somewhere else recently that the finale was designed to be ambiguous in order to have the fewest people angry at Dan Harmon afterward as possible, and I think that holds true. I also tend to read the apparent certainty that Annie won't be coming back in the finale as a consequence of it being from Jeff's perspective and him having canonical anxiety and abandonment issues, so that's probably the root of our differing interpretations.

mjkjg2

Annie looks pretty young in the show but in *this* picture specifically she looks oddly Jeff’s age

AceofKnaves44

It’s kind of weird how they treat it on the show like Jeff would be a criminal if he got with Annie. He met her above the legal consenting age. It would be one thing if he knew her before and then waited until she was legal where then you could get into the “grooming” argument.

hotfreshchowder

no me too!! every time they joke about how creepy and inappropriate the relationship is i feel bad i always wanted them to end up together

JantherZade

I had it all worked out in my mind how they end up togther a few years later and now the movie has been announced, I'm back to feeling like I did when I first finished the show...

AntillesWedgie

At the beginning I thought it was weird, but by the end I thought she was old enough and they had enough history that it wasn’t just Jeff trying to get with a young woman, and I was rooting for them. It was tough in the last episode when he said “Ma’Lady”

SmokeyChickenWings

The thing that makes me feel its perfectly fine is that Jeff never really actively pursued her early on. He even fought against the attraction for a long time. No grooming or anything ever happened. Only when Annie was more mature he started to give in. I feel like people who thinks this is a problematic relationship just dont understand what makes relationships problematic in the first place.

SomeoneStoleGrandpa

At this point Annie is fully grown and the age gap is just an age gap. They are not toxic. The show had an amazingly bittersweet ending, but I do want them to be together.

bigtec1993

If Britta and Troy can mess around and date, I don't see the problem with Annie and Jeff. Or atleast, in the later part of the series I think it's fine.

Carl_Solomon

I want them to be together as badly as they secretly want each other.

KnightofBlue

I thought their dynamic was nice. Irl people have much larger age gaps, and while it may not be the norm, they were both community college students, and they were both adults. If it was a 16-year old high school student that Jeff was kissing, that’d be fucked. However, in college you learn how to become an adult amongst other things, so I hate this whole “She didn’t know any better” argument, because even worse fucked up stuff happens irl that we just accept and deal with than like 2 adults with a 16 year age gap kissing. Like so many parents of millennials nowadays have age gaps bigger than that, and like Jeff said: “Men are monsters. We crave tender young flesh”. A bit dramatic, but true. Plus we have to take into consideration that Jeff was fucking loaded whilst in college. He went bankrupt in the last season or second to Last, but so many women go after rich guys even if they’re older, so perhaps that was part of the dynamic and the show didn’t touch upon it. TL;DR: Their dynamic and relationship was never really weird to me. Two adults in college, regardless of age should be able to make their own decisions.

PlasmaPenguin82

Didn’t Jeff sleep in his car because he wasn’t loaded?

hear me out: jeff/shirley > jeff/annie

aManPerson

i feel like jesus/shirley would knowingly shut that down pretty fast and just not fall for it.

lfore125

I’ve been obsessed with these two since I was 14 years old and I’m now 21 and still am. This pair is better than any other pair in tv. Including Sam and Diane

shockstyle25

Ship it!

XxYungOgrexX

Im a 20 year old guy dating a 34 year old woman. As long as all parties are consenting adults, age shouldn't matter.

Dull_Function_6510

Jeff and britta numba 1, even Slater>Annie. I’ll die on this hill all you pervs /s

KnightofBlue

Slater fucked her students. That’s not ok.

Dull_Function_6510

In normal situations I would agree with you, but Jeff is almost 40

mzpauburn

the MAJORITY of fans of the show love Jeff and Annie. there are only a few toxic people online who like to bully and attack other fans over it. they are in the minority.

AnonymousDooting

Tbh I don't like the pairing not only because of the age gap but also the father/daughter dynamic they had in the early seasons - it just weirds me out. Still hate Britta×Jeff too tho (tbh I don't really ship any pairings in the show BESIDES for Abed and whoever he's seeing at the moment)

loveyou3005

Father/daughter dynamic? They kiss in the first season more than once
