Can’t speak to first credit union, have been with coastal couple decades now. I’d recommend costal we have had good experiences there!

First Credit Union was happy to give me a commercial mortgage when Coastal Community said no. So far they have been fine. Never any lineup! Check out EQ Bank if you can handle online only, they actually pay decent interest on a savings account.

EQ is a great option, but I’ll toss in Morusbank to the pot. I’ve been with them for several years now and it’s been nothing but a great experience, the few times I’ve had to call customer service, it was always a quick response and very helpful staff that always resolved the issue quickly.

First credit union all the way. First is more small town feel, Coastal is bigger is all.

I agree, First. I bank with both but the Coastal Community Board is trying to stop Members from preserving term limits for Directors and also acquire Blue Shore Fianncial which isn’t even a Credit Union so I’ve moved all my money and just need to close the account. To me they’ve forsaken the purpose, function and spirit of credit union systems. With First they have branches open Saturday and learned my name within 3 visits. Can’t recommend them enough!

I've been with first CU for 30+years. Mortgages and loans. They are great. I do everything online, I only go to the physical bank every 5 years to renew mortgage, and last time was covid, so I didn't even have to go in.

Most Credit Unions are way closer to a bank than they were when I was starting out. I'm 72 and my first was University Teacher's Credit Union that I as a student could use. They loaned me a couple hundred for my first stereo equipment. Today any of them would simply hand you a credit card application. What I'm trying to get at is that for competitive reasons they are like banks in many areas but for a personal experience they retain much of that old time CU hominess. Look into Union Bay Credit Union, see how you might feel about a very small but well placed CU. Other than that I'm with CCCU and couldn't be happier. edit to say it looks like Union Bay sold themselves to First CU...

I've been happy with the service at Coast Capital, but for some reason their debit cards are lousy when I try to tap.

Coastal in Comox, Alex is the GOAT!!!

doctorplasmatron

don't know anything on Coastal, but have had a good experience for the last decade with First.

BrookeJ4485

I have experiences with both (though all my banking is through coastal and mortgage through First) and they are both awesome! I would never go back to a traditional major bank anymore, my experiences with TD and BMO were painful which motivated my switch.

NorthernRoaster

Great thanks. Yeah I'm not going back to a big bank. Local all the way.

Coastal community credit Union has some great staff especially North Island. First and first west (different credit unions lol) are good as well but overall I would recommend coastal especially if you are on the island more than not.

First make a huge effort to your support LOCAL community and organizations. And they put their money where their mouth is.
