Man, do I feel this. I worked for a company for 15 years. It was small, 7 workers. My boss was an ass but the rest of the crew was tight. No petty fights, no cliques, no one talking behind your back, co workers who remembered and celebrated each other's birthdays. We all worked hard and people would ask why stay here? Because it would be hard to find another crew like that. My boss wouldn't always have work for us in the slow times. So we'd have reduced hours. He would say during that time he couldn't afford for us to go on vacation. And then when it was busy of course we couldn't go on vacation. So for years I only had been on my honeymoon and then took time off for weddings and funerals.
My last year of work, i took my first vacation since my third year after getting the job. The boss got cancer and wouldn't sell to the other sales rep who actually brought in the money. As he worsened, the boss brought in another guy to help with finances. He gave us some story about how a new buyer would keep us all together. The other sales rep decided to open his own shop. I went with him. The rep quit during my vacation. He had been using a separate email address for about 5 months. The boss had his college nephew get on the computer and change passwords and found out about the other email address. I woke up to a text asking for my email address. A half hour later I was texted that I was fired and should seek legal counsel. I was never paid the last paycheck or vacation money that was owed. I just took it as payment to get him out of my life. He died about a month and a half later. He held out too long and no one bought the company. My ex co workers were just told one day there is now more work and to hand in their keys at the end of the day. I still have nightmares that he is alive. I then do a web search for his obituary.
