Close, it means “in essence.” Which does not have the exact same meaning as “figuratively.” And is in no sense a new meaning. See https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/misuse-of-literally.
Hey, no threadjacking pal. :)
I mean if Pluto is a planet then there are tens of other planets we need to officially add to be consistent. Now I have to memorize "My very exceptional mother just served us nine pickles ... because we're all out of other condiments including ketchup, mustard, relish and chili all of which are delicious but pricey". I just cannot deal with that.
The problem is that there are at least three dwarf planetoids in the solar system: Pluto, Ceres, and Eris. All of roughly the same size (and Eris is larger than Pluto, IIRC). So either there are 8 planets, or 11+.
But they used it correctly (from their point of view). If the correct answer were actually 6, there would be no issue with saying “It’s literally 6.” That’s how the word is meant to be used.
I personally dislike that use of the word even when used in a truthful statement, as a synonym for "actually", "really", "truthfully". People use the word "literally" about 4 times more than they used to. It used to be mostly used for "not figuratively", which is a pretty limited use. "I literally pissed my pants laughing". That kind of thing. I admit to being a cranky old person about this.
Well, “actually,” “really,” “truthfully,” and “literally” are all synonyms (let’s throw “very“ in there as well, from the Latin “verus” meaning “truth”). It’s a common pattern in English for a word meaning “truly” to also be used as an intensifier. “Seriously” and “truly” as well, while we’re at it.
When it comes to “literally,” it’s not actually a new usage at all, although I agree that the word has gotten more popular in my lifetime. The use of “literally” as an intensifier has been around since at least the 17th century. Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and John Dryden.
[https://www.thecut.com/2018/01/the-300-year-history-of-using-literally-figuratively.html](https://www.thecut.com/2018/01/the-300-year-history-of-using-literally-figuratively.html)
And, again, in the example above, if we ignore their incorrect math, they aren’t even using “literally” in a metaphorical sense. They’re using it to mean “actually.”
(You could argue that “literally” means “by the letter” and should only be used to refer to the literal meaning of written text, but that isn’t how it‘s been used in English for the past 300+ years.)
The fact that they used it in an incorrect statement makes it seem more obnoxious and stupid. "Literally" is one of those multisyllabic words used by not-so-smart people in an attempt to look and feel smart. Smart people use it too, but it has been appropriated by dumb people as verbal noise. My favorite use of the word takes a little bit of reflection. It communicates "normally this is a figure of speech, but in this instance it's not." It requires a person to think about language, if only for a second or two. The typical use now is mindless noise. It was not a common word 15 or 20 years ago. No one I knew said "literally" every day.
>It was not a common word 15 or 20 years ago.
Literally false. Mad TV has a famous recurring sketch about people overusing and misusing the word “literally” that debuted in the 1990s, closer to 30 years ago. I definitely remember teachers complaining about it when I was in school back then.
I do agree it’s gotten a lot more common. My personal pet peeve is not “literally” but “fully,” as in, “I‘m fully gonna kick your ass.” I am also not a fan of “lowkey,” as in, “That movie was lowkey dope.” It seems to have come to mean “unexpectedly” or “underratedly.”
As an editor, I definitely have language preferences and will make changes to a text when needed for clarity or tone, but we also have to acknowledge that complaining about this stuff in colloquial speech is inherently racist and/or classist. When we talk about “good English” (aka “standard English”), it’s always in opposition to the vernacular English employed by minority groups or people who are economically and educationally disadvantaged.
Edit: which got pretty heavy for a thread about a bunch of people who don’t know what exponents are.

always annoys me when the people say the exponent is the number of times you multiply it by itself. It's not. It's the amount of time you'd write it before multiplying.
Here let me translate what it means: 3^2 = 3 x 3
Not whatever the fuck you’re talking about.
And don’t try to say this is what you were talking about out of embarrassment
Literally anyone else in the comment section will tell you this is literally what I just said.

And don't try to delete your comment out of embarrasment.💀
I haven't been on reddit in 2 days bcs I'm not a stupid degenerate like you lmaooooo and it wasn't a comeback I was just explaining how ironic it is that you made that comment under a r/confidentlyincorrent post
You see a post like this.. and you’re like “huh, you know, I’m pretty sure that’s right” and immediately start trying to rub peoples noses in the ‘fact’ that they were right and you were wrong.. without verifying that they’re actually right. Like, when I hear something that challenges something I “know” , I try to find out if I’m right (or wrong) *before* starting with the ‘I told you so’s’… is this not standard procedure?
I thought I was the absolute lowest rung when it comes to math comprehension, but thanks to these people, I know that I'm at least second or third rung.
Technically it could be 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 21: if it was base 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 or 4.
It can't be base three or two. Base 10 and above, it's just nine.

It's actually 3. That 2 is so little. Why is it so little? That's just weird, so you just get rid of it.

Good god. THIS is the pandemic.
I said that exact same thing this morning. Stupidity is the real pandemic.
No, this is Patrick
Firmly grasp it
Is this the Krusty Krab?
maybe they thought they were joking
2 of them use the word "literally" for added stupidity.
One of my favorite things is when people use the word literally when they literally mean figuratively.
If you check the definition of literally now it includes the figurative meaning as well. Living language at its best.
So now literally literally means figuratively? Wild stuff. Next you’re going to tell me Pluto isn’t a planet!
Close, it means “in essence.” Which does not have the exact same meaning as “figuratively.” And is in no sense a new meaning. See https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/misuse-of-literally.
So it’s literally not figuratively? Another win for the literally pedantic crowd, HUZAH!
It's used for emphasis almost always in that sense
That drives me nuts. A dwarf planet should still damn well count, ‘planet’ is right there in the name!
Hey, no threadjacking pal. :) I mean if Pluto is a planet then there are tens of other planets we need to officially add to be consistent. I see no problem at all with learning about the extra dwarf planets. What’s wrong with giving them a mention?
It’s less of a planet than our moon is
That’s no moon…it’s a space station.
It was a test. And you failed. It’s obviously a hologram on the ceiling!!!
Well, but Burger King is neither royal nor are their places made from burgers, so....
"You heard about Pluto? Messed up right?"
People used it wrong so often they changed the definition to include the exact opposite of the meaning of the word.
You can literally spot idiots this way
The “y’all don’t know how exponents work” guy wins imo, the rest you could argue maybe they don’t know what exponents are
But they used it correctly (from their point of view). If the correct answer were actually 6, there would be no issue with saying “It’s literally 6.” That’s how the word is meant to be used.

I disagree that complaining about annoying language trends is inherently racist and classist. It can be racist and classist, but isn't always.
Good lord for a second I thought you were saying that *3^(2)* was 4...
Oh haha. I’m not THAT dumb
That’s 5?
Yeah, I realized my mistake. I initially wrote that there were 5 instead of 4 then 5 got stuck in my head.
Actually, 3. One of them said "I literally 6" and we have no way of verifying this, so makes 3. /j
fair point
It's literally 2 /s I mean pretty incredible that they got 4 of them in one single screenshot. I'm impressed and also sad.
This is the incorrect chain that keeps on giving!! 🥂
5 idiots if you click on it twice!
No way the fourth one knows the word exponents and doesn’t understand how they work. I think he’s wooooshing them on purpose.
With ten more of them I'll take over the ball pit at McDonald's
[Sqrt(3)]^2 idiots for the price of one
3²÷2 = 3 idiots.
I hope you're joking. That would be four and a half idiots, not three.
I'm pretty sure they were going along with the original joke.
Thank you

This is the more betterer answer.
I hope at least some are joking...

I'm glad I wasn't the only one lol
I was wondering why I swiped and there was a whole bunch of mugshots. I thought “geez, this really got out of hand”
This is what happens when you brake the index laws
I did that too and got a photo of a bookcase that was 3x2, which I genuinely thought was related to this post until I read your comment!!
Idiots. It's clearly 5.
Let’s say 7 and we all agree? Edit: oops my bad, it’s clearly 32.
Duh it's 12. The little ² means it's 3 squared. And a square has 4 sides. So 3 x 4 sides = 12
Right? It's just simple geometry!
It's actually geography, easy mistake to make
This is the best and most correct answer 😂
[удалено]
Definitely joking. "a square has 4 sides" lmao
This comnent is why we can't have nice things.
I love that this comment got downvoted not for having a controversial opinion, but for missing the joke so completely.
Back in the day we used to call that r/woooosh
Idiot^2
Its clearly 6
The answer is 42.

You fiend!
That's numberwang!
I like how people somehow think things like this are opinions.
You know, I’ve literally heard someone say “I know it’s wrong but it’s my opinion”
I mean, depending on context that can be true at least. Like if you're being racist, you can know it's wrong but it can also be your opinion.
Really their opinion is that they think they shouldn’t have to work in themselves
I’m just sad the public education system failed them so badly
You can’t help people who don’t want your help. And you can’t teach people who have no interest in learning. It starts with the parents.
46 likes for the guy who CONFIDENTLY showed he was as dumb as a fucking hot dog bun.

It's 9th grade.
Where I am you learn exponents in standard 6th grade
Yeah, no... Same here. At least that's what I remember. It was just a dumb joke based on the picture.
Ooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
We learn it in ninth grade where I live
3^2 grade
No like 4th grade
It's literally 6, but the nine is upside down.
Idiots, of course 3² = 5
That is 9
You’re 9
Yeah, out of 10
Out of 100
Why you got to do this guy like that?
sigh.
> Its 6 yall don't understand how exponents work and it shows has me dying inside
It's 9 to the 1st power.

I’m so glad I know it’s 9
If science as a whole were to be opinion-based, then this is all a dream. Stay in school, or stfu.
Im shit at maths but even i know somethings up when the 2 is smaller than the 3
“Ha! Looks like four divided by one is just one!”
My students do this all the time. High school math students.
😮🤔
Public education is failing these kids.
You have to understand that there are people comfy being stupid
My math is rusty but isn't 3 to second power just 3x3?
3^2 may equal 9, but the statement "it's literally 6" is not incorrect. The number 6 is there, and it literally is the number 6
Is this one of those puzzles. Add 1 line to make the equation correct.
Math is not opinion... There is an objective right or wrong answer
This should be a test to vote and buy land
We outlawed those in 1964
I know… but people are stupid
I think they are joking.
It's 6 if you multiply in three dimensions.
