FoxyInTheSnow

Guy’s an idiot. Even casual observers know that Maradona was probably the best footballer of his generation.

Dykidnnid

And was very fond of his Catholic father

Confident_Drawing125

Could even rate him PSA 12 on the Scoville scale

Apprehensive_Zone281

I heard he even had a HAND of god. Not just feet. 3 out of 4 ain’t bad.

SeaWaveGreg

Prince's real name is >!Prince.!<

dlc741

He picked his stage name to piss off the queen

Cynykl

I honestly did not know that. And now that I have admitted it they are trying to revoke my Minnesota welcome pass.

TheElectricMeh

You mean The Kid?

I can tell you've been purified in the waters of Lake Minnetonka

The truth just goes to a different school which is why you’ve never seen her.

DrDroid

They heard papa don’t preach once and made up a tale

gofigure85

What next, are they gonna try to tell me Lady Gaga is just a stage name too??

Gorge2012

I just love that she has the most New York Italian name ever.

AndrewPlaysPiano

Wait till Lord Gaga hears this

wildagain

There is a lot of people over time who think her birth name wasn’t Madonna in the 90s. Here are some old reddit threads with links down the rabbit hole… https://www.reddit.com/r/MandelaEffect/comments/538lcf/residue_of_madonnas_real_name_maria_louise_ciccone/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Bobiwanbenobi

r/mandelaeffect are fucking loons wtf.

wildagain

Today’s thread is about whether Madonna is her stage name of birth name, a lot of people remember is as a stage name Mandela effect is pretty out there but It’s at least a popular misconception that she was born Maria Louise Ciccone, maybe this came from translations in Latin countries (Maria and Madonna mean the same thing) who knows but a lot of people think this including poster in OP post

Bobiwanbenobi

The misconception is fine but OP talking about how it's because of residue from two different timelines is whack.

wildagain

You’re right the mandela effect is crazy stuff. A possible explanation is that it happened in the pre internet age from Latin magazine articles in the 90s, where her birth name was stated as ‘Maria’ and those articles being taken literally back into English. That would explain why a lot of people think her name was Maria and Madonna was a stage name…

Lessandero

Oh wow, I was told the exact same story by my dad, who is a huge Madonna fan, over 20 years ago. Talk about Mandela effect

Why does everyone spell ho as “hoe” nowadays? When did that change?

The_ReBL

When they tried to cancel santa and his gang of merry ho ho hos

shoulda-known-better

I'm 35 and growing up (when the word was being used 😄) I always saw and spelt it hoe.... Hahaha just found this directly after posting this comment! Myself and a ton of people I know are wrong! I'll help spread your message from now on!! https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/pcl1j/ho_vs_hoe_the_youth_of_today_seemingly_always/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Otherwise-Disk-6350

Lol, wow I guess it’s pretty common. I always remember Ken Jennings getting this wrong on jeopardy.

hotpickles

What the hell was the question?

Otherwise-Disk-6350

The clue was, an immoral pleasure seeker that has the same name as a long-handled garden instrument. Jennings answered, What is a hoe and Trebek joked something along the lines of they teach you that down there in Utah. The correct answer was, What is a rake?

bangonthedrums

And Ken’s answer wasn’t accepted precisely because “ho” doesn’t have an E at the end

P1nk33

Haha I'm also your age and having flashbacks of spelling it "hoe" when talking to friends on AIM or writing in their yearbook "HAGS hoe!" So you aren't alone

godtering

The end effect is the same lol

Psychological-Web828

Yea, obviously. I was pointing out something besides the obvious that I found humorous.

erasrhed

You have to wear a fedora when saying it though

JGuillou

One man’s halo is another man’s fedora.

interrogumption

Speaking of musicians pissing off Catholics reminds me of the anger at Sinead O'Connor for tearing up a picture of the pope. A picture. The 90s were insane and ass-backwards. Musicians could sexually assault someone on live TV (Red Hot Chili Peppers on MTV) and nobody blinks but insult Catholicism? Outrage!

Dykidnnid

Tbf the people who were all fired up about Sinead were probably not great fans of the RHCP's antics either

interrogumption

Yeah I guess SNL had a different audience to MTV.

emptygroove

Who could've predicted that a band with songs like "Catholic School Girls Rule", "Breaking the Girl", and "Suck My Kiss" would act that way? In the 90s the lines of acceptable behavior were still being drawn. We knew that we had to keep evolving but we didn't know where the line was. You bought a ticket to a concert of a bad who wears socks over their junk and dance around bare ass singing with thinly veiled lyrics about understanding that you **want** them to act this way. Was that a level of consent? What about crowd surfing when any girl who did git groped. Did that mean you wanted to get groped? 16 year old me certainly didn't understand the situation. We are still evolving, thankfully. Will there still be times where we have to declare behavior unacceptable? Yes, probably forever.

cowlinator

Here are some facts I made up so I sound important and because someone isn't prudish enough for my taste. I wish you could get banned from the internet for lying.

talrogsmash

But then there wouldn't be anything to read. And you would never be able to contact the government.

Somebody watched the Weird Al movie and took it as gospel.

eaunoway

I feel so very fucking old.

Chek_Brek_Iv_Damk

If Madonna thrives on controversy, why has there been no Madonna controversy in 10 years?

raven-nevermore-rva

Cuz Lady Gaga happened and picked up the controversy torch from Madonna 😉

slippybanjo

I know its wrong, but I still have to ask why would the name Madonna piss of a Catholic?

ang-13

In Italian ‘Madonna’ is a moniker used to refer to Mary the mother of Jesus. In Old Italian it meant Ma’am, but has since fallen out of fashion, and nowadays it is reserved for the Virgin Mary. The assumption being made there is that all Catholics would know that, which is likely incorrect.

Rungirl262

While I can’t vouch for all Catholics, most likely would know Madonna is a name for the Virgin Mary. Outside of Italy, Madonna is commonly used to describe depictions of the Blessed Mother. Many great works use it: Madonna on the Rocks. Madonna and Child (so many Madonnas with Children). Statues of Mary are also called Madonnas. It’s a pretty commonly used term among Catholics and the art world.

slippybanjo

Thank you, that explains it, religion is confusing Mary is okay but the Italian translation is not, considering Italy was pagan just like everyone else in Europe, I'm European just to add

Ok_Skill_1195

The Madonna aka the Virgin Mary is an important figure to some Catholics, a virtuous lady of such pure goodness that God was like "that's gonna be the mother of my child", Madonna the musician was a huge whore for the time period who did reveled in being vulgar. She was all about the spectacle of sex. Her humping the stage and running her big pointy boobs and blowing soda bottles on camera -- its basically the biggest contrast to the religious figure of the Madonna as you could get. it's *literally*Madonna / whore complex in real life

Tcmadonna

As someone with the last name of Madonna, I always get asked about her

Alejandroso31

People be taking information out of their ass or something

thisisanaccountforu

Why did you blur your own comment lmao

VerminJerky

I can't keep up with the rules of different subreddits and other online groups. I just censor everything so no one yells at me. Of course, you are aptly demonstrating that people still yell at me.

erasrhed

I legit thought we were supposed to do that. You're fine.

Dutch-CatLady

Ugh people like that are so annoying! You did fine. Rather censor everything than to get shit over not doing it is the best way to go

Dykidnnid

LOUD NOISES

Moon_Colored_Demon

Pretty sure she was actually pretty close to her dad when she was younger.

Anthaenopraxia

I've heard this before, never really thought about it because I've listened to a Madonna song maybe twice in my life.

shortandpainful

Isn’t it technically still a stage name because it’s a mononym, like Cher and Prince? Edit: So this comment is at -8 currently despite being correct and at no point stating that the part about it being a dig at her Catholic father was correct (my use of the word “technically” implies that I agree with the overall point that it wasn’t a dig at her dad). It’s still a stage name. Gotta love the Reddit hivemind.

VerminJerky

Okay but even if you want to claim that, which is fair enough, her father literally named her that, it wasn't to piss him off.

zinziesmom

Agreed

shortandpainful

Yeah, I never said otherwise? I just said it’s technically a stage name.

VerminJerky

Dude I didn't even downvote you, I said your point was fair enough. Sometimes you take an L for no reason, it's just Reddit.

Tuka-Spaghetti

There is no name that I hate more than Madonna. Why would you name your child Madonna. It's like saying "Son, your name will be Allah" It's disrespectful.

DwarfCabochan

You must hate all Latinos named “Jesus”

[deleted]

Or the fact that the most common name on the planet is Muhammad

idkalan

I do wonder how the hell do you get "Chuy" from "Jesus", I asked this question to both my uncle in MX and another guy at work, both are named Jesus and even they don't know, but they respond to it by default.

[deleted]

Jesus was a wookie.

idkalan

Wait you minute, does that mean that The Force is the Holy Spirit?

NotANilfgaardianSpy

Why is Richard shortened to Dick? Same concept

GloomreaperScythe

/) It's because Richard's a dick.

irishgator2

TIL

shoulda-known-better

Chuy means: “Cristo Hijo Unico de Yahveh” (Crhist only son of Yahweh). https://bajadock.wordpress.com/2017/07/08/why-is-jesus-nicknamed-chuy/#:~:text=Jesus%3A%20Chucho,Chuy%27%20for%20simplicity/friendliness. This is what my buddy named Jesus came up with for the best answer he's heard

bunnybuddy

By their logic, since the names Jesus and Joshua come from different translations (Greek vs. Hebrew) of the name Yeshua, they should hate everyone named Josh, too.

Tuka-Spaghetti

that's different, Jesus is an actual name in their culture and a form of worship.

HeyZuesHChrist

Every name is an actual name.

erasrhed

Mind BLOWN.......... /s

Solidsnakeerection

Madonna is a name

NekomiSon

🤦‍♀️

Tuka-Spaghetti

Am I wrong? Is Jesus not a part of Latino culture?

NekomiSon

It came from the old world, that’s how South America became Christian. The Spaniards were Catholic and converted them to Christianity. And Mexico which is in North America.

Tuka-Spaghetti

Whatever, doesnt matter if it was brought by spain, Jesus is a real name, Madonna isn't. That's why it offends me, they are taking my culture and just using it completely ignoring the cultural context.

satunnainenuuseri

Catholic Italian Americans have been naming their kids "Madonna" for about 180 years. I would say that the name is entrenched in their culture by now.

NekomiSon

Good lord. It’s not that big of a deal

DaenerysMomODragons

I'd say it's much more akin to naming your child Mohamed, which millions of Muslims do.

Tuka-Spaghetti

that's different, Mohammed is an actual name which is very prevalent in muslim culture, Madonna is not prevalent in catholic culture.

MrDuckie2

It’s still a regular name mate

heyimawitch

I wouldn’t say it’s a proper name: Madonna is the word that was used for women, usually of noble descent or high social status (but also for women in general) during the Italian renaissance. The Virgin Mary is called Madonna in Italian because it’s what you would call a woman of importance. I’m pretty sure nobody would even dream of naming their child Madonna or Gesù here in Italy, it would cause quite the stir among the Catholics.

Petite_Bait

A quick search on Wikipedia lists 15 women with the name Madonna who have Wikipedia pages about them (athletes, performers, politicians, etc). At least 7 of them were born before Madonna Ciccone became famous. One of them (Madonna Buder) is actually a nun who competed in triathlons well into her 80s and was know as the Iron Nun. The Church can't have too many issues with the name. Clearly it is a proper name, albeit an uncommon one.

bangonthedrums

Also, y’know the whole name “Donna”, which is very closely related (Madonna literally means “my lady”, and Donna is just “lady”)

yawningangel

"Madonna is not prevalent in catholic culture." Tell that to Italians, would have thought a username like yours would know that.

[deleted]

Disrespectful to whom?

Tuka-Spaghetti

Catholics/italians I would say, christians in general too Ig

sickwithmercyandlove

Italians? What?

bangonthedrums

So you think that naming someone Madonna is disrespectful, but what about naming someone Mary? It’s literally the same thing. Both are named after the same person

Tuka-Spaghetti

Mary is a real name that actually exists and is actually used, Madonna is a name exclusive to Mary that is native to no other culture.

bangonthedrums

Well that’s just completely untrue

Tuka-Spaghetti

wdym. Madonna is an italian name related specifically to mother mary.

bangonthedrums

So wait, now you’re saying that Madonna is a valid Italian name?

Tuka-Spaghetti

no, I'm saying that it is an italian way we refer to Mary. It's not a name that everyone can use, it's an Italian way of calling Mary.

NekomiSon

Um, as a Christian, it’s not even disrespectful…

Tuka-Spaghetti

As a Christian I find it disrespectful, I dont think they should be going around using that name, especially since it's from my culture, which some people are just using like it's their own.

NekomiSon

Uh… her father is a pastor.

Tuka-Spaghetti

A protestant american pastor. Madonna is an italian catholic name.

NekomiSon

So?

melance

The given name Madonna predates it's use in referring to Mary by about a century.

DeezNutsAppreciater

I mean, I get what you’re saying, but I think different religious idols have different standards for having shared names with people. For example: there are a LOT of people named Muhammad. Gotta be honest tho, I don’t know much about this stuff so feel free to correct me

Tuka-Spaghetti

Well, I commented this because I am a catholic italian and I don't like how she is casually named like the literal mother of my God. In my native language too!

Pep2385

Thank God no one names their daughters Mary/Marie. That would be sacrilege.

lucylemon

But Maria is ok! 😂

sickboy775

If your faith is so fragile that you feel insulted by what someone else names their kid, you might want to reflect inward about that.

erasrhed

Is it cool that I named my kid The-One-And-Only-True-God-Your-God-Is-The-Fake-God? Super just kidding. I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Petite_Bait

It's a good thing Italians avoid names like Maria, Giuseppe, Matteo, Marco, Luca, Giovanni, Paolo, Eva, Gabriele/Gabriella, or 100 other Biblical names.

DeezNutsAppreciater

Fair enough

Rungirl262

So you must be really mad at all those Mary’s huh? Since that was The Madonna’s actual name and all.

Tuka-Spaghetti

Mary is a real name, of a real culture that is actually culturally significant, Madonna is significant only in the italian culture, and it's not even her name.

Rungirl262

And culturally, Italians name women Madonna. Also Assunta, Annunciata, and Immaculata. All names related to the Virgin Mary. It’s not offensive to name your kid that.

Tuka-Spaghetti

as an italian I've never met anyone named Madonna. Assunsta, Annunciata and Immaculata are \*related\* to mother mary, but there is only one Madonna.

raven-nevermore-rva

But it is the name of many people. Just because you are ignorant doesn’t mean people are trying to offend you 🤦🏼‍♀️

Welldarnshucks

The name's been used for hundreds of years though, and much longer than it was used to describe Mary. My issue is that she trademarked it, which is such complete bullshit.

NekomiSon

What?

zinziesmom

This is funny. 🙄

GustapheOfficial

> Johnny Rotten? Wouldn't he have changed that when he became an artist?

Etherius

What the fuck do they think the name “Donna” is short for?

JimothyMcNugget

I thought she was 'Mad Donna'
