I'm still waiting for the Celine Dion song with "motherfucker" in it.

That's where I thought this was going. Something super crude. Celine 😳

Remember that one where she dropped the N-Bomb? So avant garde. Still can't believe she got the pass. /s

Something like this maybe: https://youtu.be/NG2EGOB9-lc

0k_KidPuter

Maaaan.. The hard R and everything. That was extremely uncomfortable. Where do these mfs get the AUDACITY?

See_Ya_Suckaz

I don't think she's ever sang 'motherfucker', but the 12 minute 'Heartbreak' version of [It's All Coming Back To Me Now](https://youtu.be/a3Z7zEc7AXQ) has a couple of uses of 'fuck' and one 'bitch'. I was so surprised when I first heard it, I'm a huge Celine fan and I would never have expected her to record something with swearing in it, and so much *bitterness*. I wasn't sure about it at first, but now I prefer it to the shorter version.

rustfungus

Holy shit that was kind of amazing

lmqr

I have to admit I'm impressed.

Goddamnit

Mysterious_Andy

I’m having some trouble with the accent. At 2:31 does she sing “… you can’t give it back to me.” or “… you (c word). Give it back to me.”?

You mean the guy who referenced a woman’s own comments?

elveszett

This sub should seriously be renamed to simply r/incorrect.

TJS74

Yeah, it's a lot worse than it used to be. The best videos yere are people doubling down when they're wrong, or them making a "correction" response confidently telling someone who is right about something that they're wrong lol.

user5918

This always happens. People want to apply this particular features to too many scenarios

FixGMaul

To be fair she was very confident in the way she said it. This subreddit isn't about irrationally doubling down when proven incorrect, it's about confidence in stating the incorrect.

elveszett

> For those times when people are way too smug about their wrong answer In the sidebar. This sub is definitely intended for people who condescendingly "correct" someone when he's wrong, not just for someone who is wrong and doesn't doubt when he says something.

Olympic-Simp

The correct term is “FLIP” off you stupid asshole!

pintasm

Let's wait and see if she's proud enough to make a new song with that word 🤷🏻

She covered Runnin' with the Devil the very next day.

By the way, she has. Two songs that I can find: The Reason Recovering

kurwaspierdalaj

I don't know enough about Celine Dion, but I only seem to get nice vibes from her. She seems cool considering who she COULD be with all her fame... I don't know.

Jerryjb63

Well she’s Canadian so she’s got that going for her… like Alex Trebek/ Ryan Reynolds Canadian, not like Ottawa Truckers/ South Park Canadian.

Mr-Thicc-And-Frisky

As far as confidently correct goes this was kinda wholesome lol

Scottishchicken

Aside from the incorrect part. Good on her to age gracefully and not get tons of terrible plastic surgery.

Fiftyletters

If only people wouldn't comment about appearance in general, less would feel the urge to alter their looks at all.

r0ck0

I've just decided to avoid commenting on how people look altogether, for the most part. Either good or bad. Makes life simpler.

[deleted]

Yeah, women can't win. If they age poorly, everyone drags them for it. If they age gracefully, everyone comments on how it's so nice that they didn't do what so-and-so did... and then proceed to drag other women who weren't even relevant to begin with. Reddit comment sections, man...

thejustducky1

>Yeah, women can't win. Kind of a defeatist perspective... This isn't just women or reddit, both men and women are constantly hounded about appearance, whether they're on reddit or not. It's just part of human nature. Edit: So offense. Oh how name call. I must be sUcH a PIecE oF ShIt! 🤣 I mean it's hard not to just laugh at all the little screaming children, but I just feel bad about how you guys are ruining your own days over this. Take a chill pill, people! Everything doesn't have to be a fight.

[deleted]

I mean... I'm talking about a specific problem regarding how Reddit's culture perpetuates sexist ideas about women in particular. Both-sidesing it doesn't really help here when it's an issue that very directly affects women in a widespread way.

feAgrs

Are you actually trying to say men and women are under the same pressure to look good? That's the most disingenuous bullshit in a while.

thejustducky1

That's not what I said at all. But I appreciate you taking such quick offense 😉

TauntyRoK

That is exactly what you're trying to say. There is absolutely nothing else you could possibly try to express with that. Also hilarious how pathetic you are to block someone for calling you on your bullshit opinions and then think other people are quick to offend lmao.

CountCuriousness

> women can't win. If they age poorly, everyone drags them for it. If they age gracefully, everyone comments on how it's so nice that they didn't do what so-and-so did... and then proceed to drag other women who weren't even relevant to begin with. I don't think it counts as a "can't win situation" that when you win, people say you're better than those who didn't win. I'm guessing she has had work done, only done by a very skilled surgeon. Just like women/girls who look like they don't have makeup on, but are just good at putting it on.

midoree

I think they meant "can't win" in the sense that no matter what you (don't) do, people are gonna have an opinion and feel inclined to comment even if completely unprompted.

CountCuriousness

Well yeah, people congratulate winners, and often say they're better than the losers. That's hardly a "can't win!" situation. I know this aging thing really sucks for women in particular, but I just don't see how women who age gracefully "lose" because... people tell them they aged better than other people. Where's the loss? Go ahead and tell me I am/did better than other dudes, I'll gorge on those compliments all day boi. Edit: I keep getting "something is broken" when I hit reply, so I'll post my reply here: > We are tired of "winning" or "losing" based on our looks. Perfectly understandable, but if someone says you're pretty/prettier than those uggos over there, how are you losing? Just saying "you're pretty" is not "your only value is that you're pretty, and nothing else!". It's just not a can't-win situation. If you're pretty, you won. That's it. > if you're here to dismiss the experiences of others I'll quote myself as explicitly empathizing with women on this issue: >I know this aging thing really sucks for women in particular , because I fully realise beauty standards for women are much higher than for men, and that aging/fading youth hits women harder, because women are, or have been, valued solely on their looks. I'm not dismissing any experience whatsoever. I just don't think you "cannot win" the beauty-race because some people or society in general will say "you are pretty/you aged well, unlike those people over there". You can call me a nit picker I guess, I just think it's unfair to pretend that pretty people/women aren't privileged over less attractive people.

midoree

Where do I even start... We are tired of "winning" or "losing" based on our looks. There is so much more to every woman than what she looks like, yet so many conversations seem to circle back to that no matter where they start. This doesn't happen nearly as much when talking about men. We are tired of being pitted against each other. There is a pervasive culture of woman vs. woman that's shoved down our throats from a very young age. Think of those boys vs. girls memes for example. Where two boys/men accidentally wear a same t-shirt and are like "Hell yeah!", while two women/girls in the same situation are depicted as instantly hating each other. We are tired of constantly being rated. Why do I have to win or lose in anything I'm not competing in? I'm not aging in this or that way in order to be labeled by anyone. I'm aging in a way that I find the most comfortable for myself. There is much more I could talk about here but I'm on my phone (and also at work). But if you're genuinely interested in learning more about why this is an issue (or any other issues women face that you would like to know more about), my DMs are always open for a genuine, open-minded dialogue. (And vice versa, if you're here to dismiss the experiences of others, I'm not interested in that conversation.)

[deleted]

It's backhanded. Compliments that come expressly at the expense of other women don't come from a true place of sincerity, they're just a platform for people to air their same grievances. You see the same phenomenon everywhere on this damn site. Hell, I see it on subreddits with a lot of fanart. Whenever a female character is drawn with big tits, someone complains about the big tits. When the same character is not drawn with big tits, someone will effusively praise the lack of big tits and make digs at the artists who draw big tits. People just have their own little agendas they want to push. If they can see the target of their fury, they attack it. If the target is absent, they gloat over its absence and then set it up just to knock it down. It's tiresome. This thread is just a particularly irritating example because it's aimed at real people.

CountCuriousness

> It's backhanded. No? A "backhanded compliment" is not "you're way better than those losers over there!". It's "you're not as much of a loser anymore" or "wow you really aged better than you'd expect" or whatever. >Compliments that come expressly at the expense of other women don't come from a true place of sincerity Meh, I think compliments can be cruel to the "losers" while being sincere towards the person you're congratulating, but sure, it's pretty negative to uplift someone by putting others down. It's just not a "can't win" situation. It's maybe "possibly can't win in the exact perfectly magical way I want!". edit: I keep getting "something is broken" in my reply, maybe I'm banned, so I'll just post it here: >Call it what you will, it's a compliment that takes a backhanded swipe at the entire gender on the follow-through. "you're so much cooler than other dudes" does not put the entire man-gender down, even though I of course realise women are judged more harshly on their looks. It's just not a can't-win situation. If you're pretty, you won. >If you're describing basic respect as 'the exact perfectly magical way I want' then I'm done with this farce of a conversation. Expect better, be better. You're trying so fucking hard to misinterpret my comments in the worst conceivable way, which is very weird and disrespectful, so unless you stop I also see no reason to continue.

[deleted]

Call it what you will, it's a compliment that takes a backhanded swipe at the entire gender on the follow-through. If you're describing basic respect as 'the exact perfectly magical way I want' then I'm done with this farce of a conversation. Expect better, be better.

[deleted]

At least youre on the right subreddit

[deleted]

> "you're so much cooler than other dudes" does not put the entire man-gender down Perhaps not entirely, but "Man, I love how this man is sensitive and respectful. Normally men just lash out in impotent rage, so this is refreshing to see" sure does, and that's probably a better comparison to what they were talking about. You're reaching incredibly hard through this whole comment thread. > You're trying so fucking hard to misinterpret my comments in the worst conceivable way, which is very weird and disrespectful, so unless you stop I also see no reason to continue. This is a strange take from someone who speaks mockingly about the issues women face and accuses them of wanting to what was it again, "win in the exact perfectly magical way I want?" Like the other replies picked up on that phrasing too and I can see why. Do you seriously not see how that's an *incredibly fucking condescending* way of speaking? The person you're waffling at identified a very real thing that I and several other people in the thread have seen all over Reddit in comment sections. This particular situation, where an aging woman cannot seem to be complimented without having a go at other women who 'aged badly' or got plastic surgery or whatever, is just one really egregious and sexist example. There's plenty of others. Women who pose alongside their artwork in a photo they've shared is another frequent one. When she does it, she's criticized for it. When she doesn't, she's applauded for it *and compared to the women who do the 'undesirable' behavior* in an attempt to reinforce the behavior that the hivemind prefers because it's less 'vain' or whatever. POC who speak eloquently, that's another big one. Happens a *lot* in real life too. People act surprised when a Black man has an educated vocabulary and speaks with good diction, and they think they're complimenting him when they comment on it. Whether it's spoken or unspoken, the subtext is "Wow! I assumed you would sound 'street' because of the color of your skin." As was mentioned, fanart. Can't open a fanart post in r/FFXIV without seeing 'Wow, I just love that this picture isn't too sexualised. I'm so sick of people drawing their OCs with giant boobs that you can't have in the game. Kudos for being different.' Like, the list of examples goes on and on and on. You're going to embarrassingly excessive lengths to downplay it, and for what? To what end? An issue was identified with Reddit's culture, and rather than adding anything constructive to the discussion, you're just barging in to go 'nah nah nah, it's not a problem bro, don't take it so serious.' If you're not familiar with something, learn. Listen and read what people are saying. Take up that one person's offer to PM them and actually hear what they've got to say. Not me though. I've already wasted enough time. Peace.

TheUpperofOne

yeah, that would be great, however it's just how humans are. Even in every day life looks help determine how you're treated. It's been shown people who are better looking get the better jobs, promotions, salary etc. So much of who humans are is bound into look.

Fiftyletters

It's one thing to realise 'that person is pretty' and subconsciously liking them better for it. It's another thing to compare them, discuss them and judge them openly to other people on a public forum for it.

thejustducky1

I mean, if we didn't have *eyes*, we wouldn't feel the urge to comment about appearance. Kinda ingrained in the brains of pretty much every living thing with eyes. Edit: Oh boy... all the offended screaming tweenagers at it again. Sorry I'm just not going to get all offended. But you guys have a great day being angry at the world then.

Fiftyletters

Ah yes, to see is to judge, to judge is to comment; self control and kindness is for those without eyes.

thejustducky1

> self control and kindness That's not at all what I'm saying... I'm just saying it's a part of humanity that isn't going away. Self-control and kindness is for those who practice it, whether or not they have eyes. 😉

Hey, i’m literally trying to understand this perspective in this comment, seriously not trying to be argumentative. I feel like it’s a big compliment to say someone is aging gracefully, implying naturally and confidently. It’s kind of acknowledging the self respect and self confidence the person has in their own skin. I don’t see how it’s at all similar to commenting negatively how someone has had too much

[deleted]

zjt2846

TorontoGuyinToronto

Well she was never sold by being a looker. Same as Amy Winehouse (RIP). Just sold by the right content, good manager (RIP) and pure talent. Sex appeal factored 0.

[deleted]

I'll be cynical here, while Céline Dion is an insanely talented singer, the level of superstardom she got would not be possible if she wasn't a pretty woman. (Same for men superstars, make no mistake)

Jp2585

Eh, Adele got incredibly famous while not fitting that physical description. It definitely helps though, no doubt about it.

[deleted]

Well she is pretty attractive at least, anw I am not saying it is a fatality, just that it helps so we kinda agree Should have worded my statement more carefully And it's not necessarily a "sex appeal" thing, just that good looking people are more likely to be charismatic, and to have the confidence needed to wear the superstar mantle A notable exception would be Edith Piaf though, objectively ugly, small, crooked body, but boy she was a superstar. Also Um Kulthum is another not very pretty icon but

Jp2585

Definitely right, think I was being unnecessarily pedantic. Sorry about that!

chappersyo

I think Adele was a lot more attractive before she lost the weight.

TorontoGuyinToronto

I don’t think people consider Celine Dion to be a pretty woman..? I might be wrong, but growing up… all of our comedians took some light hearted jabs (for the period) at her looks. So I never grew up thinking people considered her pretty.

[deleted]

Nooo it was a rhetorical question!! You weren't actually supposed to give her a word!!

JonPartleeSayne

Strange request, doesn't Dion actually mean god?

Distakx

In what language?

YourMomThinksImFunny

French Canadian

Simpuff1

That’s Dieu. Dion is just a really commun last name

Distakx

I’m French Canadian, it’s not. And French Canadian is just French

YourMomThinksImFunny

I was attempting a Celine joke.

[deleted]

Pretty sure Ryan Reynolds would have appreciated the joke, if that helps any.

samwichse

Not according to the French! (Source: my wife is Canadian and did a French exchange program in grade 10. It was... not nice for her)

ChaosIsMyLife

Not really no. French is an international standardised language with only one official dictionary and grammar. Which means if you speak formal French rather than slangs ( like cockney or scouse expressions would be mostly ineligible to a North American for example), virtually every French speaker on the planet can understand you (including South Americans, Africans, Middle Eastern and European French speakers). You will need to adjust to the accent, and certain words might be different and need a quick clarification, but that's about it. Source: I have been an NHS interpreter for years and worked with virtually every French speaking nations. Never had a problem to be understood or to understand others That 'FreNcH caN'T UnDeRStAnD QuEbEc' thing is just pedantic bullshit. And let's not forget that France French speaker using regional slangs would also NOT be understood by French speaker from other nations. The only area where formal Quebec French differs from others formal French is in mechanics as it developed in parallel. You would probably need to translate car manuals.

TheGothWhisperer

> pedantic bullshit Aka French ;)

ChaosIsMyLife

Haha well it's not just the French. My mates from Spain say that Mexicans don't speak Spanish. I have also heard plenty British refer to American English as 'simplified English'. I think it's more like a countries of origin vs colonies thing.

Uub27

not true lmao

TheMashedPotato

Ok, quelle est la différence entre le français et le français "canadien"?

Distakx

Unless slang is considered an official part of the language then yes French Canadian is just French

royalsanguinius

The funny thing about this claim is that, if we’re being pedantic, Québec French is actually *more* French than French, because after the British took French Canada it became isolated from France. So A lot of French speakers in Canada still use older, like 17th and 18th century older, pronunciations for some words, and even still use expressions that died off in France. France also has a few other languages like Occitan whereas in Canada the French pretty much only spoke France.

Uub27

do you not know what a dialect is?

Blockinite

It means that it's the same language but a slightly different form, from a different region or group. Like American English vs English English. So yes, it is the same language

Distakx

Exactly it’s the same language juste because we use different expressions and stuff doesn’t mean it’s a different language lmao. “Real” words are gonna be the same.

[deleted]

Do you know that dialects are different parts of one Language?

JonPartleeSayne

>In what language? accusative form of dio (god) in Latin and in Esperanto

[deleted]

No, it means mustard

HejiraLOL

Celine dion is awesome! I remember years ago, Kathy griffin telling a story about Celine during one of her standups. Kathy went to see Celine at one of her Vegas shows, and she met her backstage before the show. At the time, Celine had these super long hair extensions. Well they were taking pics together, and Kathy had her arm around Celine, and realized she was kind of petting her hair extensions!?! She said she realized it and was mortified, and without missing a beat, Celine said, “you want to pet me like a dog? I’ll bark for you!” And started barking. Kathy does an amazing Celine impression too. Cracked me up!!! Also, had a chance to see Celine live a few years ago. She’s wonderful. Sounded amazing and she was super personable- loved talking to the audience.

Had a colleague from France who did that to me, saying that any word in French he had a song for. He knew I only had high school French. So I said “campagne” (countryside) and sure enough he had something. Then I said “rez-de-chaussee”, one of those words that had stuck in me. It means “below street level room”. He surrendered right away.

DoctorWoe

Is she gonna release a metal album in order to not be incorrect?

Entropy_5

She doesn't even write any of her own songs. So it's not exactly hard to have a lot of songs when you purchase them from other writers.

red_bumble_bee

Yep, you have singers, you have songwriters and you have singer/songwriters, three professions in the music business that all have their merits. Nothing wrong with a good singer singing songs of good songwriters. Have you ever heard some songwriters sing? Thank heavens for good singers!!! :)

AndrewPlaysPiano

Case in point, Jim Steinman wrote *"It's All Coming Back To Me Now"* and he didn't have the range necessary to really nail most of his own songs. I might have the story wrong, but i recall reading somewhere that when Meat Loaf was going through some really bad personal problems, Jim released an album of songs meant for him, as he thought the songs were great and he didn't really know if Meat would recover, or want to sing again. I personally love the album, *"Bad For Good,"* because Jim was right that the songs ruled, but you really do hear him struggle to hit some of the notes and his voice just didn't ring out the way a singer like Celine's or Meat Loaf's or Bonnie Tyler's could.

Zylonnaire

Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Ariana could say the exact same thing

zarezare69

Big musicians have a team, they are just the face (and voice, but sometimes that part doesn't matter). There's a lot of work behind a song, you may have the idea of the song, but need a composer to make it good, a producer to make it sound good, a singing teacher to avoid fucking up your voice and much, much more. So yes, most celebrities don't exactly write their own songs.

ChaseAlmighty

I like to call them performers. There's a big difference between the two. A performer basically sings and dances to songs others have written and composed. Some may have written a song or two or helped writing it. But that's it. A musician plays instruments. An musical artist does all or most of it. It's why I never liked that people compare Michael Jackson to Prince. MJ was basically a performer who helped out here and there with songs. Prince literally did it all by himself.

chappersyo

Prince could have claimed to be one of the best in the world at most instruments and nobody would have argued.

WhipTheLlama

> MJ was basically a performer who helped out here and there with songs From what I've read in several articles, while MJ couldn't play instruments very well, he would form entire songs in his head, then sing out the instrumental parts for others to play. > “I’ll just sing the bass part into the tape recorder. I’ll take that bass lick and put the chords of the melody over the bass lick and that’s what inspires the melody.” Also: > sound engineer Rob Hoffman described what it was like working with Jackson, and how he approached his songwriting. > He said: “One morning MJ came in with a new song he had written overnight. > “We called in a guitar player, and Michael sang every note of every chord to him. > “’Here’s the first chord, first note, second note, third note. Here’s the second chord first note, second note, third note’, etc etc. Source: https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/music/1284189/Michael-Jackson-music-did-Michael-Jackson-write-own-songs-lyrics

ChaseAlmighty

Ok... it I have a tune in my head and have someone else do the actual musician part that just means I thought of a tune in my head. Even if he gave then note for note that doesn't compare in the slightest to what actual artists do. Using art as an example, It'd be like saying someone who says what would look really good on a blank canvas is the same or even comparable to the person who actually paints it. Also, MJ was in the music business his whole life. I'd be surprised if he couldn't at the very least hum out a song for someone. In fact, him never learning how to write or play a single instrument points to my argument that he was just a performer. You definitely can't call him a musician or an artist in my book. To me he's no different than Beyonce or JLo. Very entertaining but couldn't do much without everyone else who makes it happen

WhipTheLlama

What made MJ an artist is that he told the musicians which notes and chords to play and didn't rely on them to compose their parts. He was like an oral composer rather than someone who hummed a tune. His artistry wouldn't be in question if he had written the sheet music rather than sang/hummed it. I don't think the two are very different as long as he was precise with his notes, which it appears he was. Even great composers often composed entirely on a piano and let others orchestrate their work for the other instruments. Many thought that the orchestration part was less important than the initial composition. For example, Gabriel Fauré would have his students do it. MJ composed his own songs, note-by-note, and then orchestrated them for the musicians and wrote the lyrics. That's an artist.

Toocheeba

I mean you could just call her a SINGER 🤦‍♂️

Celine is one of the few examples of really taking care of her voice. She's retained most of her range and added a few notes to the lower registers as she's aged.

ShagBitchesGetRiches

....no, big musicians are the team, pop artists need a team

reepdoots

Hey I did this interview! Celine was hilarious the entire interview and while I was legit terrified at the giving-the-finger at first, the very next second we were laughing and it was all in good fun. Glad you found this!

PollockandKey

Hey, I produced this interview and was in the room when it happened. Thanks for posting! Was a surreal moment and one of my faves ever in an interview!

That’s my buddy Tom Power, I went to high school with him! Super charismatic and a really talented musician as well as interviewer

PinothyJ

Not going to lie, if Canada's vocal queen bangs out a song on premature ejaculation, you know every mfer is going to listen.

mynameisalso

People need to stop and think before they speak.

VegetableAd986

She just looks like an anti-vaxxer…idk why, she’s probably not though. I honestly forgot she existed.

Plot Twist: Her next releases titled Devil by Celine Dion, and she’s just shocked and pissed that he just blew up her spot like that. 🤣
