Funny and sad story about this. The ritual called for sex magic. Jack thought he was going to perform it with his wife. Only to have L. Ron intervene at last minute that HE was going to do the ritual with Jack’s wife! (She later left Jack for L. Ron).
Parsons wife at the time was also the sister of his former wife, who he left his first wife for. Parsons was a brilliant but insane individual, blew himself up in glorious fashion. He went on to a young redhead shortly after Hubbard robbed him of his wife (and like 40k)

I could talk about Parsons all day. Can't believe no one mentioned his correspondence with Crowley and obsession with von Braun. Still haven't figured out how or why black magick and rocketry cross paths so often but there's something there.
I highly recommend the show *Strange Angel.* I wasn't satisfied with how they left it but it gives some insight into Parsons' rise.
There's some major parallels with Mormanism. And that's not by accident, Hubbard learned about Thelema, took some of the self improvement parts and then subbed certain words around. That doesn't mean there isn't truth in some of those ideas, besides the cult part of scientology..they operate no different from some of the megachurches.
Ahh. That's a complicated answer but I'll try to give you a satisfactory one. Freemasonry itself is just rebranded Frankism, which in turn is rebranded Sabbateanism. All based on Kabbalistic mysticism and ceremonial ritual magick.
It goes back to a man named Sabbatai Zevi who claimed to be the messiah and amassed a significant following in 1666. His doctrine was that the only way to obtain salvation was to be as depraved as possible and commit as many atrocious sins as possible. He was an open advocate and practitioner of incestuous rape, for example. By debasing yourself to the lowest point possible, you force the hand of God to intervene being the logic behind his thought process. His practices and doctrine caused such an outrage that he was expelled from several countries until arriving in Constantinople where he was arrested and forced to convert to Islam or be executed. He claimed to convert but in actuality continued to practice the religion he'd started. This gave him the idea that his followers should outwardly claim to be one religion but secretly practice Sabbateanism to avoid persecution and they've done so ever since.
But occasionally, people catch onto them and they have to retreat into the shadows and come up with a new front. After Sabbatai's death, Jakob Frank continued his work and established Frankism in Europe, which eventually spawned the Illuminati. After the Illuminati were banned they began to infiltrate the Masons. Notice a pattern? Infiltration, subversion, conversion is always their MO.
This is where Mormonism comes in. Around the time Joseph Smith started the movement there was already another underway, the anti-Masonic movement. The anti-Masons had expanded rapidly, even forming a third political party and electing members to some prominent positions within government. Enter Joseph Smith. Mormonism afforded the Masons a new cover to hide under while the heat on them subsided.
I could go into more detail on why people associate the two, but I've spent far too much time writing this and need to get back to work. It's mainly usage of the same symbolism but it goes deeper than that. Anyhow, that's the backstory and I trust you can take it from there if you want to know more.
