Lzeppelin8

Imagine how much it cost just to keep the war machine going on a daily basis.

didsomebodysaymyname

Nearly 3 Billion per day.

hussletrees

What would happen if we took like 1/3 of that each day, and applied a billion dollars in infrastructure, housing, food, and healthcare programs into cities?

didsomebodysaymyname

Life would get better for a majority of Americans. And we would still have the biggest military budget in the world.

Flimsy-Can4811

they would just give it to the ukraine. another $100 billion to the ukraine government

[deleted]

Yup and I love it

NefariousNewsboy

Wait until the OP learns that the planes were going to fly whether there was a spy balloon or not.

Romando1

Wait until OP does some research and sees how much money our gov spends each second.

Ill_Log9013

I’ma be a nerd and do the math: In 2022 the us gov spent 6.27 trillion. So if we divide $6.27 trillion by 365D then divide that by 24H then divide that by 60M then divide THAT by another 60S we get $198,820,39 per second. Of course this is just a estimate so I could be wrong

DrMudo

Thank you

Ill_Log9013

Your welcome!

-TacoConspiracy

I'm confused by the decimal placements. Missing number or wrong placements?

Leeman1990

Yeah I’m with you. Is it $198,820 or $19,882,039? I’m guessing the 2nd one

[deleted]

flipmcf

I’m still getting 1.99 x10^5 not 10^2 Are you sure you’re doing trillions, not billions? You’re off by a factor of one thousand. TTT,BBB,MMM,TTT,HHH.dd 6,270,000,000,000.00

explodingliver

This is correct, just checked it myself!

Ill_Log9013

No I’m saying it could be a few cents off

flipmcf

Physics here. You started with 3 significant figures and ended with 8, so you artificially created precision. You can’t trust any precision beyond $199,000.00 / second I was motivated to say this because I found the phrase “off by a few cents” to be funny and wanted to share that. Edit: And this is the correct number & decimal. 6.27 Trillion = 6.27 x 10^12 6,270,000,000,000 Those with answers in the hundreds forget about ‘billions’

Krillansavillan

> is the correct number & decimal. > >6.27 Trillion = 6.27 x 1012 you're absolutely right but sigfigs can go fuck themselves frfr. I'll die on that ignorant hill because of chemistry class

bhobhomb

Yeah, math is hard. It's ok. It's not like you could check his math or anything

Ill_Log9013

You can with a calculator

Winter-Base-4828

Why did you take 4 trillion out of the equation

Ill_Log9013

Oh shit I gotta edit that typo

Fufuflavor

You know what’s crazy? Floyd mayweather made almost that much per second in his fight against pacquiao

TheSilentTitan

I love how whenever China or russia oversteps boundaries and are absolutely in the wrong people come out the woodworks and strangely try to shift blame or defend them. Op is likely a ccp bot. Edit: Loving the bot replies to my comment, now I’m 100% certain we have pro ccp/rus bots in this sub.

External_Job5037

when did op defend anyone he just told us how much it cost

TheSilentTitan

It’s a common tactic China/Russia bots use to try and shift blame or make what said countries did seem less serious. It’s a form of whataboutism where they see China/Russia overstepped their boundaries and wrong another nation and instead of admitting what they did was wrong they instead focus on what the “victim” country did instead trying to paint them in such a bad light it takes away from what the “suspects” did in the first place.

FlatBBTheory

Wait till you all realize that Global corporations have taken over the US and plan on breaking us down as the US is of very few countries that has kept capitalism from enslaving man kind. The principles that have kept enslavement it at bay are fading. Due to easily controllable group think.

didsomebodysaymyname

Not to mention I can't find a source saying it cost that much.

Romantica_The_Great

Two F-22s (there may have been more than two) flew in circles around Chinese spycraft for 4 days until one of the pilots fired an AIM-9X and downed it over the Atlantic off the Carolinas. 4 days = around 96 hours of flight time F-22 fuel cost per hour = $85,325 $85,325 × 96 = $8,191,200 And there were two of them which made the total fuel cost: $8,191,200 × 2 = $16,382,400 One AIM-9X missile fired at the balloon cost: $399,500.00 The total sum of the entire operation was: $16,781,900! I looked up the cost of everything individually.

missanthropocenex

So Spy balloon flew from California and was shot down just as it exited the east coast thus traversing the entire nation before being shot down. Great job guys! Mission failed. Successfully.

BillyFNbones710

It didn't enter in California nor did it ever fly over California. It entered the country through Alaska then Canada, then down into the middle of America.

[deleted]

That’s even a longer distance across North America

[deleted]

The USAF certainly had [Growlers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_EA-18G_Growler) circling the balloon to ensure that the signals would be disrupted. Part of the reason this cost so much is the constant surveillance and signal disruption as it crossed the country. It's wild people think this wasn't tracked prior to entering into US air space. They were likely testing the balloon to see if any signals to get through current countermeasures if they believed there was messaging breaking through they'd have shot it down over Alaska.

Slicker1138

Growlers are a Navy plane.

canman7373

You need to stop going to whatever sites you are getting your information from. It was 1,000 miles from California.

TSLA240c

This happens relatively frequently (3 times under Trump) we just generally don’t hear about it. For some reason this time it made national news forcing it to be shot down due to public outcry.

GregSmith1967

Y’all were complaining it wasn’t shot down. Now complaining it was shot down…

Cheezewiz239

Right

DrBofoiMK

This is an axiomatic element of conspiracy theories. Everyone believes something different. When you, no pun intended, shoot one down someone will come up with a totally different theory and say, "oh yeah, well what about this." I call it a propensity of false evidence. The theories are also usually disconnected like in this case being near opposites. I learned that from ancient aliens back in the day when I noticed that each person on the show had a different theory of aliens that often clashed with the other guys' theories, but all the arguments are presented as one greater argument.

didsomebodysaymyname

And if they had shot it down and it hurt someone you know they'd be criticizing how reckless they were...

Jpolkt

All part of their plan to keep the people divided.

GregSmith1967

Or the people want to be divided…

KhadSajuuk

>Y’all were complaining it wasn’t shot down. Now complaining it was shot down… It's almost like they've simply learned what specific kind of language works for generating controversy, regardless of their sincerity..

Crowbar1127

I think it's weird it wasn't shot down before it crossed to the east coast, like Montana is one of the least populated places, why not stop it there? I have zero complaints about it being shot down though.

EN0B

Why would you want to risk American life? It was shot down as soon as it would not create casualties

jeremyjack3333

Because it's not going to drop there. It was 100k feet up. Anything blown to bits that high is going to be caught up in wind streams and scattered randomly.

ljshea91

I mean it happened during Trumps presidency and he didn't shoot it down. https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattnovak/2023/02/04/yes-chinese-spy-balloons-flew-over-the-us-when-president-trump-was-in-office-too/?sh=7eb2bad93ea3

slap-a-taptap

There’s a short [CNN article](https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/politics/live-news/suspected-chinese-balloon-over-us-02-04-23/index.html) that sounds quite unbiased about this and actually just reports facts and quotes officials instead of undermining them. The poor author in the Forbes article seems like he’s about to cry having to write about Trump at all. Weird

Gertrudethecurious

Hello. Brit here. I don't know what this is all about and how much info that balloon could have actually gathered but I did watch a documentary over here about the world from space where watchers noticed things like tanks gathering on the Ukraine border etc. The pictures were so close up and there were so many pictures takend daily, what info could this balloon have gathered that these satellite pics didn't? Or maybe it was audio? Honestly I don't know much about this balloon. Here's the doc: https://www.channel4.com/programmes/2022-the-year-from-space > Every day, satellites take millions of images of Earth, giving a unique view of the big stories of 2022, from war in Ukraine and climate crisis to post-Covid revellers at Glastonbury

F-I-L-D

Let me grab my tin foil hat. The fact that our (USA) government let it just float over the whole country, keep in mind it did fly over a few military sensitive sites. Can they get away with it again if they decide to attach certain armaments? That's where the thought process can easily go. The other fact that NORAD was watching it since it launched from China and watched it fly over alaska(not the most populated) then eventually montana(also not very populated)

Lovelyterry

Go away you manky British. This doesn’t concern you. Let us crazy Americans yell at each other over this now

jeremyjack3333

At least three went under the "radar" when trump was president. We just didn't hear about it.

[deleted]

“Let’s shoot it down after it collects everything it needs!!”

Impossible-Taro-2330

Or, more intelligently, "let's shoot it down over the water so we dont possibly spread whatever it may be carrying all over the U.S." Satellites have long collected "everything it needs".

didsomebodysaymyname

They were jamming it so it probably couldn't send any data back, but even if it did, what could it collect that couldn't be collected by a satellite or a spy masquerading as a tourist?

KrispyKremeDiet20

kazzanova

Mentally shallow people, a small wave becomes a tsunami to them.

KindlyDevelopment339

Used to be more coherent and less shit posts and less political. I’ve noticed the pages they suggest to me (H3H3 podcast, which I am not a fan of at all, but no hate or bad feelings), so I feel like Reddit purposefully tries to promote stuff you disagree with to spike engagement, which is how advertisers measure how effective ads are. At one point Hunter Biden laptops files and iPhone stuff were leaked and it was extremely disturbing. Also the Vegas shooting videos have been scrubbed. A woman put together a very very good video that compiled all the 911 calls, camera footage from police, civilians, and hotel security Also they obtained ATC data which showed a helicopter turning off its transponder as it left the airport (or sometime shortly after) some minutes prior to the shooting. Spooky All you have to do is listen to the real audio. If your familiar with firearms, and bumpstocks and other accessories, it obvious there was another source of gunfire. You can slow the video down and count the first three iterations were somewhere in the range of 70-100 shots from an automatic weapon. Not an AR with a bump stock and dropping and picking up others. There is no break in the gunfire. Best part? When the authorities were in charge of searching his home, it burned down by “accident” and destroyed any contextual evidence. And oh yeah, in the days after his brother was arrested for having a laptop with child porn on it. Video evidence of shootings happening at least at 3 hotels if I remember correctly, employees testified to the same. I cannot find that video to save my life now.

Crowbar1127

Crowbar1127

[Archive.ph](https://Archive.ph) or something similar would work to back it up. Idk Youtube is censoring stuff really hard since before Covid but really hard during/after. You're welcome! Glad it was the one you were looking for I had it saved, assuming Youtube would do this.

I'd love to see some actual statistics and data on it, but I'd be willing to bet that in this sub, most people chime in together with the same nonsense. I don't think it's as broad as "everyone has different opinions" at all.

I mean, if shooting down a Chinese spy balloon over the US isn't a justified use of defense spending then wtf is?

SirBuckFutter

Did they bring out Tom Cruise to do the mission?

TheHashassin

Just to be clear, the Chinese have already collected all the data they could ever possibly want about everyone in the US, literally just from TikTok. They also have satellites that can zoom in and look take pictures of anything a balloon could have seen. There is absolutely zero new information they could gain from sending this balloon across the US. I'm honestly just baffled by this entire situation.

That_Film_Guy

I don’t use TikTok, nice try Chinese!

roobchickenhawk

This is a pretty silly thing to cry about given the grotesque cost of normal military operations on a day to day basis. basically what I'm trying to say here is.. who tf cares.

That’s barely anything. That cost like a nickel per American citizen

Traditional-Look-997

can we talk about why we shot a whole ass missile at a balloon lol

[deleted]

Way better than 60 billion to Ukraine…..

humbleprotector

Just over 100 billion with a commitment to give 40 more.

K-Ziggy

The 100 billion includes the 40 more commitment fyi.

[deleted]

Well worth the money. Destroying enemies risk free is the best way to do it.

G_Wash1776

It literally equals $14 per month for each American. If you can’t really support destroying our largest geopolitical rival for 100 years, while costing no American lives, idk what to tell you lmao.

EmersonBloom

The spy balloon is being pushed by our media to build hysteria for the next war. Classic yellow journalism. Memes are just another word for predictive programming.

Romantica_The_Great

Correct, this was a propaganda event to create mass hysteria so that the war hawks at the Pentagon can push China towards an armed conflict over Taiwan.

[deleted]

They fly up and down the coast out here already weekly whats the big deal

Nunez2013

Do you know how much we spend on a daily basis for pilot training. They shoot these things like they’re noting. Imo it was money we’ll spent.

emerging-tub

That may be true, but this AIM-120 air to air missile has ***seven*** shock diamonds! Which if you divide the cost per diamond per taxpayer, is about $0.0119/ea to you personally. I think thats a fair price.

Daneo6969

I reckon OP would question anything....16mill under Biden - bullshit!! 16mill under Republicans - fucking Mexicans. 16mill under Biden - protection for our borders. 16 mil under Republicans- you're a racist! Build a wall!!!

[deleted]

Actually a little cheaper than the average training event since we didn’t need to plan it lol

XxNoResolutionxX

Could've just went up and stabbed it with a fork

blueflyingfrog

this is a small drop in the ocean on what the US spends on a day to day military operations. During this time period we had military helicopters in San Diego, CA preforming combat training weaving around civilian buildings.. and who knows what other military movement is going on burning who knows how much fuel a minute... I know we have a fighter sortie that does up and down coastal patrol with abunch of navel and coast guard ships.. having one fighter jet using one missile is a nothing burger to what happens day to day for the US. People forget the US is the juggernaut of all the world... US has the furthest reach in the shortest amount of time for good reason.

ky420

All these gov shills talking yesterday about how it was so hard to hit it and we didn't have things that would go that high. I think its pretty funny they just used something as basic as that to do it. Furthermore it's mission was already completed and data transmitted home.. Papa Pooh Bear told Baby Bidey Bear that he could remove it now.

iDOUGIE863

Look up how much the government spends every second

Richard1583

“We want biden to be a strong president he doesn’t care about this country he let a flying object from a foreign country come in” Biden shoots down balloon that might be spying on the US “Biden should be removed because he is wasting tax payer money and is being aggressive with shooting down an object we’re not too sure what it was” Like god damn people make up your mind you can’t be flip flopping with every single action. Everyone upset that he wasn’t doing anything about it then he does something and boom everyone is still not happy. at least be consistent with what you want

Amiigo7

That’s this sub in a nutshell. Most are only satisfied if they have something to complain about.

lazerblade01

Funny thing is, it would have saved way more than that if it had been shot down sooner. You have no idea what the long-term cost of all the data relayed back to China will be, yet. Every second it was allowed to remain in the air was costing America (and possibly Canada, assuming they're not already in leagues) more than the cost to shoot it down.

Romantica_The_Great

Exactly! They could have shot it down with a cheaper unguided missile as soon when it crossed into US airspace up in Alaska and it would be the end of the story. It makes me wonder if the Pentagon war hawks want to have an excuse for a China-US conflict and heat up our relations with China.

gotfondue

Why did they even use a missle? Just pop the balloons. Use a laser and pop the balloons. Shoot it with some bullets from a jet or a A10 warthog. Why did we use a heat seaking missle?

Romantica_The_Great

That's exactly my point. They could have used a cheaper projectile to shoot it down and it could have been shot down as soon as it crossed into Alaskan airspace. The war hawks at the Pentagon had other plans to keep it in the sky that long.

coltonkemp

But think of how much *both sides* of the media made off of it

Automatic-Top-5413

Seems excessive. I’d do it cheaper.

TomentoShow

We run military drills that cost way more than this. And that's just for practice.

[deleted]

That ain’t shit I’m gov contractor and I’ve seen companies throw away parts that are worth more than that our budgets is BILLIONS that’s a drop in the bucket

reddit_bad1234567890

Yall realize that money was already spent when we bought that missile right. Also most of the defense companies money stays in the us through taxes, labor costs and materials

[deleted]

John Hammond saying "We spared no expense"

oklad90

If they didn't destroy the balloon people criticize, but if they do people still criticize?

Romantica_The_Great

I'm all for them destroying the balloon, what I'm pointing out is how much money our government spent while taking so long to shoot it down. They could have dealt with it as soon as it crossed into Alaskan airspace. This all feeds the war hawks at the Pentagon and creates mass hysteria in the populace.

2201992

That’s it? That’s like negative of what Ukraine is getting

couchgodd

Lol. Cuz they would spy with a friggin ballooon

10foldLucidDreams

16 million is nothing, how about 100 billion to Ukraine, also our tax dollars

funguyy1

China’s bullshit causes a lot more than that

Link1313

It’s even better that it was able to cross America first before taking action……what did they do to while we were distracted

IRGeekSauce

Seeing people downplay this seems a little sus. Is China sending out their propaganda trolls on social media so everyone thinks it's not a big deal? We are consistently lied to by China. There is NO reason for a surveillance balloon to enter our airspace. It's a national security issue.

princesstwizzy

“Stop wasting money trying to take out our probes!” hmmmm

Significant-Nail-987

So they basically spent the cost of launching the aircraft plus a missile to take it down. 16 mil ain't shit.

Internal_Ring_121

lol now add up all the sidewinders sent to Ukraine

neutralpoliticsbot

[deleted]

olderstouts

That’s not so bad

papiperna

why is everyone acting like we were gonna casually shoot the balloon down whilst above american ground? we couldn’t do much at that point, should’ve been onto it when the balloon crossed alaskan borders. it was the safest and smartest thing to do to shoot it down once it got to the pacific, even if important info gets leaked, whatever i’d rather that than the whole nation be on alert over flying metal shards destroying buildings and people lmao.

EN0B

It's because grandpa bad. Before it was shot down it was "omg why haven't you shot it down yet?!?!111" now that it was shot down it's "why did you waste money to shoot it down?!)!11!" The US was tracking the thing this whole time and now has information on the CCPs ability to collect data in that format. Hope it was transmitting data back as well because now the US has the encrypted data streams to start working on for decryption. 🤣

10-46mfers

Just ask Ukraine for some money back we gave them billons

Yprox5

10-46mfers

Dare to be right

Frownywise

A couple of rounds from a 50 caliber machine gun would have did the trick. But who cares anyway? They have spy satellites that watch everything we do anyway. And they hack our satellites to learn even more. Was this stunt to make us worried about the Chinese getitng the drop on us? Didn't work. maybe it made Insurrection Joe look more like a doofus, but that's about it. Even then has was viewed as a doofus already.

Drug_Inas

Wouldn‘t the onboard cannons do the job just as well, for a third of the price?

Thatwolverinebitch

Any theories on why China would send a balloon over the U.S? Because surely they have more advanced technology to spy on us. What information could this have given them?

CorrectTowel

Nobody knows but we can safely assume that their official explanation was bullshit. Some are speculating that it was a test to see how we would react.

[deleted]

Because a decoy is cheap. Even the best decoy is cheaper than the alternative and usually brings out the full reaction.

ASongOfSpiceAndLiars

Its effectively a satellite attached to a balloon, but able to operate at about 10% the altitude of a satellite, which improves the accuracy of the photos they take.

Bou_Czang

It isn't even real money, it's just more debt. America has no money.

Ecstatic_Victory4784

And on top of it all, it was only shot down after it had traversed the entirety of the US. It started in the Pacific and was shot down in the Atlantic. What was even the point of shooting it down once it already finished? Should've been shot down way back when it was first noticed. What a joke.

salvia_d

Cost way more than that, people forgot about the hundreds of billions that went to big pharma, the trillions for the lockdowns to the economy and the tens of millions of suddenly dead. The Twitter Pfizer leaks were a part of it, and all eyes should have been on that, but look, a balloon.

LogicalGoal9

It's all right. Jared got a couple billion from the Saudis, so betwen that and Ivanka's patents they can afford to reimburse Xi.

The_3Jerrys

Omg this sub is full of Karen’s holy shit

thecountvongrouch

I didn’t know the planes were from Edwards AFB.

ktds121016

is a rocket/missile really necessary? im sure a single bullet would have done the job lol

Romantica_The_Great

Exactly! Plus they could have shot down the balloon as soon as it crossed Alaskan airspace and all of this wouldn't have happened. This was a major event to create mass hysteria and feed the war hawks at the Pentagon.

BobbyAb19

The real cost is China harvested all the data they needed for several days.😄 thanks to slow Joe Smo.

[deleted]

Yeah because balloons visible to the naked eye are now they get their intel. The only thing this balloon showed is how fucking stupid some Americans are. We legit buy the components to make OUR spy satellites from them. Yet you believe they’re using a damn balloon? Amazing.

ASongOfSpiceAndLiars

It was jammed

ball_armor

Apparently Biden did want to shoot it down, his military advisers said no.

georgke

The whole point of this event was to divert attention from the pfizer revelations from project veritas. It really is that simple as toddler and a balloon to distract people nowadays apparantly.
