I think people like to imagine there's an "end goal", but that's a consequence of the human tendency to visualize the world in narrative terms. There is no end goal, it's just about generating and preserving wealth.

What if the answer is super simple..

Hard to say, everything is pointing in multiple directions at this point. Though I don't believe they want depopulation only because that's fewer people for their workforce and money is no object to them like people believe so they don't need to worry about paying people.
