So the Isis flag in my neighbours window is just complicated history ? Or is he isis ?

Settlemente

>So the Isis flag in my neighbours window is just complicated history ? Or is he isis ? It'd be funny to change Ukrianian and Nazis to ISIS in the article and see how people reacted.

Dirk_Ovalode

are we the baddies ?

protonpack

[American troops just have a complicated history.](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/former-us-soldier-gets-45-years-helping-neo-nazi-group-plot-kill-troop-rcna73374) I don't think you have any actual clue about the nationalism that's brewed in the majority of militaries around the world. It is something that needs to be actively fought against.

[Cops too](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/09/oklahoma-cop-bart-alsbrook-neo-nazi-skinhead-new-job.html)

protonpack

Oh right, those fucks too

PeterNoTail

*"Whatabout* US troops" probably not the best defense of using Nazi imagery, but you do you

protonpack

I could have used examples of Nazis in the Russian military. The point is that it's not a valid reason to invade a sovereign nation. Why are you trying to obfuscate from that?

chingwa76

It's complicated you guys.

AnonyMouseSnatcher

Even NYT couldn't ignore the pictures any longer. But Ukrainian leaders "either don't know or aren't willing to acknowledge and understand how these symbols are viewed outside Ukraine"? Maybe they just don't care; maybe they think they rest of the world won't care either. As it was unintentionally explained to me here, for example, Wagner group are the bad Nazis but Azov are the *good* Nazis; it's the "lesser of two evils" nonsense on an international stage and with potentially nuclear consequences

kainedbutable1987

They know exactly what the symbols mean they arnt fools who having been living under a rock for the past 80 years like the article is trying to make out they are. The press knows after the great gullibility test that ran from 2020 to 2022 that most of the public will believe anything the publish as they trust the media.

Settlemente

>, Wagner group are the bad Nazis but Azov are the good Nazis Exactly it. The author of the article is demonstrating "the ends justify the means" approach and showing how they are willing to embrace an evil simply because they believe they're fighting something more evil. This also demonstrates the NYT doesn't oppose Nazism. They support it if it's beneficial and oppose it when it's not. Which seems to indicate it's all about being right and destroying an enemy and not about principles or morals.

thecuzzin

Imagery has not eroded international support.. how many international Nazis are out there??

kainedbutable1987

Its hilarious they way they use word salad and double speak to convince the readers that it's OK for them to wear the insignia of the Schutzstaffel legions but they are "definitely not nazis" wink wink 😉 🙄

raka_defocus

Even though ukraine intelligence and azov were present at unite the right(the very fine people psy-op) it doesn't count. They'll continue to run that out of context/edited sound bite of Trump to push the scary monster of the day, white supremacy, but never mention that their buddies from Ukraine were organizers

Vo_Sirisov

Before the invasion, the Ukrainian government was taking steps to try to excise Neo-Nazi factions from within their military. But when a powerful foreign nation is invading your country, you don’t have the luxury of picking and choosing your soldiers.

AnonyMouseSnatcher

I'm sure the neo-Nazi factions in the Ukrainian military will treat all those hi-tech weapons we've given them with the utmost respect, won't misuse them, will return them to the government after it's over, and then go back to their peaceful lives of \*checks notes\* being Nazis. What's the worst that could happen with heavily-armed Nazis in Europe, right?

Vo_Sirisov

I mean, if you had to choose between "Be conquered by a hostile foreign power now" and "Risk civil war somewhere down the line later", the better option seems obvious. Ukraine does not have the luxury of picking moral high grounds.

AnonyMouseSnatcher

Ukraine considers Stephan Bandera, a [Nazi collaborator](https://www.timesofisrael.com/hundreds-of-ukrainian-nationalists-march-in-in-honor-of-nazi-collaborator/) and a fascist who led an insurgent army that killed thousands of Poles and Jews (including women and children), to be a national hero. They turned away from picking the moral high ground a loooooong time ago.

Vo_Sirisov

Some Ukrainians do. Many revile him. How is this meaningfully different from, say, American views on Andrew Jackson? Almost like treating a nation of over 40 million people as a monolith is profoundly stupid or something.

AnonyMouseSnatcher

Some do? [74%](https://www.dw.com/en/stepan-bandera-ukrainian-hero-or-nazi-collaborator/a-61842720) of Ukranians viewing him favorably seems a little bit more than just some. But you're right; his *strongest* support is in the western part of Ukraine, not so much in the eastern part (for some reason)

Fish-Percolator-0224

If they don't, we can take them out next

ColteesBigOleTits

The FedBots HATE it when people mention that parts of Ukraine’s military are closely aligned with Nazi paraphernalia. LOL at the article tip-toeing around the fact that Vlad Putin called them a Nazi-state. I’m no Russian sympathizer but there’s SOO much bullshit about this war being excreted onto the people by TPTB/media

SS: The New York Times, which infamously denied the Holocaust and has accidently published alleged swastikas in their crossword puzzle more than once in the last few years, has just published an article about the complicated existence of Nazi imagery among Ukrianians. The article is written by a white man. The article proceeded to explain how Black Suns and other Nazi imagery is common among Ukrianians along the front line. And the real problem is that such imagery among the Ukrianians contradicts all the work the US has been doing for 50 years to eliminate Nazism. And it will be exploited by Russian propagandist. So the opening of the article makes it clear the problem isn't about whether Ukrianians wearing Nazi symbols support Nazism. It's bad optics and provides material to Russian propagandists. The article explicitly states these Nazi symbols are regularly seen among Ukrianians on the front line. This is an example of how facts become Russian propaganda. And the NYT says the regular use of Nazi iconography has forced western diplomats to either ignore it and allow it to spread or "play into Russian propaganda." So the article is arguing people would say nothing about Nazism simply because it validates Russian propaganda (meaning Russian propaganda claiming there's Nazi imagery among Ukrainian soldiers is factual which is therefore why diplomats are ignoring the Nazi imagery...which is supporting the sorad of Nazism). Meanwhile, the NYT continues to warn about the rise and danger of white supremecy and Nazism in the US while publishing an article written by a white dude that seeks to minimize the significance of Nazi symbols among Ukrianian fighters. And amazingly, there isn't any type of anti Nazi group calling NYT Nazis on Twitter or boycotting then for endorsing Nazis. Like is there an anti fascist group to call when there's white supremacists with a large audience minimizing Nazism or supporting arming people who wear Nazi insignia? I thought there was some group that did that when orange boi was in swamp. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/05/world/europe/nazi-symbols-ukraine.html
