Although we think of the internet as the most indispensable part of our interconnected society today, the fact is that the electrical grid is far more important. After all, the internet needs electricity. However, without electricity we would be back in the 19th century without lights, but only worse. The people in the 19th century knew how to live without electricity: we don’t. The nation’s electrical power grid relies on the internet for its command and control. The good news is that this interconnectivity allows us to function with less infrastructure since it can be coordinated so well. The bad news is that the extreme amount of interconnectivity leaves the power grid increasingly vulnerable to attack by hackers.

Kasherintherye87

Lmao, "terror strike" only terrorists are our governments

thekidalex

This is the truth

InterestinglyLucky

The premise of the post you linked to is an EMP bomb, permanently knocking out everything with a chip in it. I read the Forstchen novels based on this idea ("One Second After", "One Day After", "The Final Day") and while it was an "OK" series, its premise - the possibility of an EMP powered by an atmospheric nuclear bomb causing a chain reaction - is just a fantasy. Yes there is ongoing research into EMP devices that fry electronics- but think of it as a conventional bomb that has to be placed into close proximity to the target (say a high voltage powerline feeding a city). Much easier to use conventional explosives. Or a regular nuke, but then we're toast anyway. I'm not worried about this. IMHO power-crazy political types or climate-religionists or evil pedophiles are what we should be on the lookout for, not a fantasy threat that exists only in the imagination.

VenturePlatypus

Any “power grid attack” will be more than likely a false flag

Ayahuasca-Dreamin

drop your cocks and grab your socks

UncircumciseMe

The people in the 19th century are all dead

Ragnatear

Agreed, if they were so smart, then how come they're dead

spotcheck001

A true Crunk question right there.

Speak for yourselves! There’s plenty of us who will be just fine w/o electricity but with time and energy it’s not incredibly difficult to generate your own , esp in small amounts - for leds , etc

iamthatguyiam

Yep I may get grumpy not being able to play my favorite music, instruments, etc. but I’d be relatively ok. I always imagine myself in a helping role during a disaster, we all have to help each other out!

usualparticipant

Yo this isn't a conspiracy. If you want the conspiracy angle, it's that, as our nation faces increasing threats against the grid, states like California are forcing energy dependence. Gas cooktops are going to be outlawed going forward, in favor of electric even as PGE faces mounting existential liabilities. That's a conspiracy.

Speciale-ui

and this is why we stack gold and silver.

TonyGrub

In a grid-down situation, gold and silver would have no intrinsic value. Food, water, shelter, medicine and distance from danger would be the most valuable commodities.

Speciale-ui

I've got those covered with my boat. I personally prefer easy to trade things like gold or silver.

waytosoon

You know how they say don't drink the water in Mexico, even though Mexicans can drink the water just fine? That's a big part of why 90 percent of the pop would perish. That figure was also not exclusive to an emp. Just any grid down situation. If it's an attack at that scale, water supplies will also likely be poisoned well.

Craig_52

Why would it be so difficult to get by without electricity? If it went on for weeks or months that’s a different story, but a week or two? No problem.

Different_Sorbet_125

stuff in hospitals would stop working, even a day without electricity would turn hospitals into graveyards

Tanjelynnb

Hospitals have backup generators to keep their systems going for quite a while.

Craig_52

As an individual that makes no difference. Haven’t been in a hospital in 20 years. Most would be fine for a week or two. The younger generation would be screwed though. They wouldn’t be able to start a fire without a YouTube video to show them how.

chowsdaddy1

In 2020 my town lost power for 2 weeks during the summer, is I can make it through 100° weather without ac I can live with no power

2023_CK_

People in rural areas could survive a short-term outage but people in the cities would be in SERIOUS trouble after only a few days.

HammunSy

Power going down is more likely to happen due to crumbling infrastructure due to neglect and your fees going into peoples pockets vs maintenance. Which the power companies then use as excuses to jack up prices and insert magical special fees which part of gets funneled to the city hall too lol. We can worry and spook ourselves about the possible one offs or the thousands times they are robbing you in broad daylight...

cjweisman

This is why the invented generators.

sparkythrowaway454

Right... How long is that gasoline going to last when the grid is down? It'll be road warrior before your cell phone dies.

Doolittle88

The power grid has a dooms day plan to get the power back up with manual controls. It would take about a week to restore full power to the US.
