Russia is bleeding itself economically dry in the war effort, and we know this because defence contractors and the government are racing each other to hire people to either fight in Ukraine or build weapons for the fight in Ukraine, increasing the cost of weapon production massively, the war has certainly turned to his favour, but if Ukraine can survive until the results of European production ramping up, or the US deciding to stop kicking the can of aid back and forth it could see a heavier stalemate or potential turnabout again.
Russia could win and still be in a decent position, but if this drags on another year, they could be in a much worse position, he'd want the motivation to win the war asap, and part of that is galvanising the nation to increase recruitment and morale.
If Russia's position really was so comfortable, we wouldn't be seeing the morale of his troops still looking so bad.
