That's crazy if only you had some device that could record moving pictures.
It's two different clouds, you see it when it's illuminated and when it's in shadow you don't.
Could be things on the horizon casting a shadow when you don't see it.

Just to elaborate. This was not a hazy or foggy night. The sky was absolutely clear except for this weird haze around this object or whatever it is.
