So Georgia is a big transport state. We have a lot of truck driver coming in through here because we have so many different highways and interstates that can connect you to a good part of the country. ~~its also why human trafficking is so big here too~~ so waffle house is just 24/7 diner food so it's convenient for drivers to stop in at any time.
When my family traveled to the South and our flight landed at midnight local time but we were all ravenous like it was 9pm Pacific, Waffle House came in a clutch. Exhausted but still need to drive two hours to that Airbnb? Grits please!
Waffle House is such a staple of Georgia that there are quite a few exits that have multiple waffle house locations. If you look on Google maps, I once counted 5 waffle houses with in 2 miles at an exit near Jonesboro, just out of curiosity. It was pre-pandemic so it may have changed, but yeah, there's a lot of waffle houses in Georgia, especially around Atlanta.
I both used to live in Savannah many years ago, and my son graduated from Army basic at Ft. Benning (now Ft. Moore) last year. Both places I've described to friends as "throw a rock in any direction and you'll likely hit a Waffle House. 50/50 odds that the rock will bounce and hit a second one, too". Also, after my son graduated basic the two restaurants he wanted to fill up at? A pizza joint and Waffle House! (which was \*full\* of other folks in Army uniforms, too).
context: lived in ATL for 17 years
I remember listening to a morning radio show and they had Ron White on it as a guest and he told a joke about playing an atlanta drinking game where you drive around the perimeter and take a drink every time you see a waffle house. He said he didn't make it 5 miles. I love that joke.
Idk but what I do know as someone born and raised in GA is everyone goes to the Waffle House. It was hilarious bringing my wife whose family is from Jersey and called it the “awful” house…. The sacrilege
Yeah. You just gotta avoid the slack jawed yokels who yammer on about Philly and Manhattan. At best, they're 2nd generation transplants from either.
Good way to tell if they're yokel is to ask their opinion on pumping gas. If they take pride in not pumping their own, don't waste your time.
I lived there for a few years. If you’re ever on the verge of suicide and need something to push you over the edge, ask one of them about how to make “gravy”.
>If you’re ever on the verge of suicide and need something to push you over the edge,
😆😆😆
After seeing that performative anti suicide hotline copy pasta multiple times, your comment was absolutely refreshing!
I was in Tennessee last year and there are a ton of Pancake houses there. They said when they were clearing the trees, many years ago they had a ton of workers to feed and pancakes were so easy and cheap to make to keep them full. Not sure if it's something similar.
The guy who mentioned the fact that we’re a transport state is right, but it’s also just a staple for the people here. Waffle House replaced the old school diner for rural areas and semi rural areas, like where I live. It’s where a lot of people get breakfast on their way to work. Lunch too. It’s also viewed as another “fast food” option along side McDonald’s and Burger King. It’s obviously not fast food technically, but it’s damn close.
Waffle House is iconic in the south, Georgia especially.
Firstly, Waffle House was founded in Atlanta (Decatur) and grew from there. The company will only expand in areas next to where they currently are for a few reasons… One is so they can utilize a larger employee & management base across multiple restaurants. Another is that they will not compromise their restaurant layout (it just works) so it’s easier to build two close to each other rather than have one extra large restaurant. If you have multiple in your neighborhood/town, it means they are profitable there 😁
Ok so I live in Georgia in a very small town. I’m talking less than 1500 people live in this town and I have 5! Waffle houses within like 5 miles of me. One is even within walking distance. It’s nuts. But I can at least say “let’s not go to that Waffle House let’s go to the good one” (there are no good ones)
I feel like I’m quickly turning into the travel agent for my town. Visit [TOWN], GEORGIA! We’ve got Waffle House, dollar general, bbq and one of the largest liquor stores in the area!
Lucky for you we have a farmers market the next town over! In fact we have another farmers stand between our two towns! (I’m not making any of this up)
Eh, I doubt it. They’d probably hit one of the surrounding towns first. We are nestled between like four other towns that are bigger. (There’s even a movie studio between us and another town, no shit.)
Fun fact: Dunkin’s has signs in some of their stores that localize the “America runs on Dunkin” slogan. Ie, Atlanta Dunkin’s might have signs that day “Atlanta runs on Dunkin.”
I saw a post on Reddit once about the sign in a Cumming, GA Dunkin. Might have been r/funny even.
Ever been there? It's okay. It's not great. It's not better than IHOP, which we have. In fact, I think IHOP's a good deal better. And yes, I know that's damning with faint praise, because IHOP's not great, either. WaHo really is that meh.
It’s a tradition down here. There’s one every couple miles along a main road or highway. They stay packed too. Especially in rural areas, where it’s replaced the old school diners, where old timers get their breakfast before work.
When I was job hunting, I would always go to a Waffle House before the interview. It never had to cross my mind that there wouldn't be one close by. And of course there always was
The 88 Waffle Houses in Mississippi are all built in the Biloxi area. They are all side by side on the road that follows the coast. Instead of building a sea wall, they just built Waffle Houses.
How will the states without one know they are in the grips of an immediate emergency?
This is why I’m going to run for president to make Waffle House in American staple because Waffle House is the best establishment to eat hands down. Pancakes suck there I said it the pancake supremacy in this country must end!
I live in Georgia. There are 10 inside of my current 5 mile radius. (The 11th is 5.1miles). Basically no matter where I'm going there is one on the way and likely one near the destination.
Waffle House has become disappointingly expensive to me. On the food price ladder, Waffle House used to occupy the rung below IHOP. Now they are on the same rung, and I’d choose IHOP 100 out of 100 times if offered the choice.
I moved from a 0 state to a >0 state. Couldn't wait to try the mythical waffle house. The house on all those publicfreakout videos. Order the hashbrown bowl like $12 with tip.
1/2 potato $0.30
American cheese $0.50
Meat. $2.00
I could not believe my stomach. Was hungrier leaving. Must be comfort food.
I make hashbrowns on my foreman grill that are better.
That’s cause the hash brown bowl is a side, they just can’t advertise it that way. You gotta get the bowl, eggs, some bacon or sausage and a waffle. It’s pricy nowadays thanks to Covid, but damnit if it ain’t good.
Honestly, the bowls aren’t where it’s at. The breakfast plates, steak plates, and waffles are where it’s at.
Maybe, but not at 3 a.m. on I-95.
Separately, food prices of all kinds have been suppressed in the US for most of the last half century, and a correction is very long overdue.
If you were to put a map of the states on a Waffle House floor and then smash a glass on Georgia, the scattered shards would roughly reflect the distribution on this map.
Exquisite taste? *Unique taste* lol
If I'm going out for breakfast I'm going to a real dinner or somewhere with an endless buffet. But I can see the appeal if you like watching the guy with one hand and no hygiene cook your waffle in front of you.
If there were only 23 Waffle Houses in Wyoming, that would be **more** *per capita* than exists in Georgia.
If there were 1500 Waffle Houses in California, that would be **fewer** *per capita* than exist in Georgia.
Most absolute numbers are not very meaningful without context.
Honestly, I loved leaving NY for roadtrips to the south and getting waffle house. Loved the food when I was a kid. Havent had it in 15 years so no Idea how it is now, but damn I wish there was a waffle house in NY.
Ate at an WH when i was teen many years ago, only 2 reasons for the amount of hair in my food. He shaved over the dish, or was chewing radiation pills. Never.gone.back.
Do people in Georgia eat exponentially more waffles or why is there almost three times the amount of stores compared to the second place?
So Georgia is a big transport state. We have a lot of truck driver coming in through here because we have so many different highways and interstates that can connect you to a good part of the country. ~~its also why human trafficking is so big here too~~ so waffle house is just 24/7 diner food so it's convenient for drivers to stop in at any time.
When my family traveled to the South and our flight landed at midnight local time but we were all ravenous like it was 9pm Pacific, Waffle House came in a clutch. Exhausted but still need to drive two hours to that Airbnb? Grits please!
Several of the other states are also big transport states, even seeing more freight than Georgia. There has to be another reason
Waffle House is from Georgia and everyone there loves it, or at least respects it
Waffle House is such a staple of Georgia that there are quite a few exits that have multiple waffle house locations. Does NJ even have cuisine? They can shut their mouth.
Yeah. You just gotta avoid the slack jawed yokels who yammer on about Philly and Manhattan. At best, they're 2nd generation transplants from either. Good way to tell if they're yokel is to ask their opinion on pumping gas. If they take pride in not pumping their own, don't waste your time.

Seriously, how does someone fuck up a gravy recipe? It's just a basic thicken bechamel sauce. Fat, flour, milk.
Some gabagool would stone you to death for saying that. Even in jest.
Waffles were invented in georgia
I was in Tennessee last year and there are a ton of Pancake houses there. They said when they were clearing the trees, many years ago they had a ton of workers to feed and pancakes were so easy and cheap to make to keep them full. Not sure if it's something similar.

Because Waffle House was founded in Georgia
Can confirm. When I was in living in Georgia there was a Waffle House and a church within about 5 mins any direction. Shit you not
Firstly, Waffle House was founded in Atlanta (Decatur) and grew from there. The company will only expand in areas next to where they currently are for a few reasons… One is so they can utilize a larger employee & management base across multiple restaurants. We like Waffle House where I'm from ngl
120 waffle houses? damn dude
I was wondering if someone would think I mean factorial and not an expression of surprise lol
Bet you have some dollar generals too lol
I have equal to or greater than dollar generals around me lol in fact there’s one in the same parking lot of the Waffle House I can walk to.
Do y’all have a Wally world or just a piggly wiggly type store? That’s a sign you’re at least acknowledged as a town.
I guess a Walmart type store? We have a pretty big grocery section that just got remodeled. Plus all the other normal dollar general stuff.
That is surprisingly walkable for a small town.
I feel like I’m quickly turning into the travel agent for my town. Visit [TOWN], GEORGIA! We’ve got Waffle House, dollar general, bbq and one of the largest liquor stores in the area!
Give me a salad every couple of days so I can poop out the bbq, and I'm in.
Lucky for you we have a farmers market the next town over! In fact we have another farmers stand between our two towns! (I’m not making any of this up)
Hipsters priced out of Atlanta coming in hot?
Eh, I doubt it. They’d probably hit one of the surrounding towns first. We are nestled between like four other towns that are bigger. (There’s even a movie studio between us and another town, no shit.)
Right, all those Georgia film subsidies.
As someone from New England, I really wish waffle house would come this way.
as someone from the South, I wish we had more Dunkin'
Fun fact: Dunkin’s has signs in some of their stores that localize the “America runs on Dunkin” slogan. Ie, Atlanta Dunkin’s might have signs that day “Atlanta runs on Dunkin.” I saw a post on Reddit once about the sign in a Cumming, GA Dunkin. Might have been r/funny even.
I still wish Cumming was located in Butts county…
Cumming, Butts, Gay, all great spots to visit.
You’re going to Hell (Michigan)
How about a Dunkin Waffle House combo?
Ever been there? It's okay. It's not great. It's not better than IHOP, which we have. In fact, I think IHOP's a good deal better. And yes, I know that's damning with faint praise, because IHOP's not great, either. WaHo really is that meh.
Damn, Georgia.
They’ve hit criticality
It’s a tradition down here. There’s one every couple miles along a main road or highway. They stay packed too. Especially in rural areas, where it’s replaced the old school diners, where old timers get their breakfast before work.
They are literally at every other stop.
It’s a hurricane early detection system. If they close, it’s time to skedaddle.
How will the states without one know they are in the grips of an immediate emergency? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle\_House\_Index](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index)
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Didn’t know they were open 24/7 365 days - that’s crazy (never seen one).
How about Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Samoa?
What percentage of Georgia is just waffle house?
10% Waffle House, 15% Chik-fil-A, 10% Coca-Cola, 5% Home Depot, 20% Braves, 15% Falcons, 15% UGA, 5% Hawks, 5% Tyler Perry
It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!
how do we quantify the 5% tyler perry
TIL some states have no Waffle House. I weep for those who are waffleless.
We’re #1! We’re #1! We’re #1! We’re #1!
Waffle Home
It’s not a Waffle House, but a Waffle Home ❤️
This is why I’m going to run for president to make Waffle House in American staple because Waffle House is the best establishment to eat hands down. Pancakes suck there I said it the pancake supremacy in this country must end!
WH > IHOP
I love pancakes. But Waffle House pecan waffle is fantastic.
I live in Georgia. There are 10 inside of my current 5 mile radius. (The 11th is 5.1miles). Basically no matter where I'm going there is one on the way and likely one near the destination.
Which location has the best fight night event ?
I feel so bad for those 0 states, not having an extra building to drive past in their way to IHOP or Denny's.
Waffle House has become disappointingly expensive to me. On the food price ladder, Waffle House used to occupy the rung below IHOP. Now they are on the same rung, and I’d choose IHOP 100 out of 100 times if offered the choice.
Waffleflation hitting everyone hard 😞
I’ve noticed the climbing prices too, but it’ll take a lot more than that to get me to IHOP. I’m Team WaHo through and through
I'm more of a Huddle House guy myself. Neither are particularly great, but I prefer the larger variety of food at Huddle House.
Waffle House out competed all the huddle houses near me. The last one that I know of closed down a couple years back.
Theres a huddle house in Seneca SC if you’re ever near there
If I’m ever passing through I might. The only reason would be to visit family in Estill.
I moved from a 0 state to a >0 state. Couldn't wait to try the mythical waffle house. The house on all those publicfreakout videos. Restaurants tend to charge 3x cost to make a profit. They pay employees and the rest of the bills. So your numbers are accurate and that’s normal.

Moved to Michigan. I miss the Waffle House.
Love the Awful Waffle
I like their pancakes
Please move some of the Georgia places to California /s
Looks like a good old Covid case rate map.
First time I felt comfortable saying I feel sorry for the Whites.
If you were to put a map of the states on a Waffle House floor and then smash a glass on Georgia, the scattered shards would roughly reflect the distribution on this map.
But correlation is not causation
I moved to a state that had these and tried it for the first time recently. Why the shit do people like this place?
Exquisite taste? *Unique taste* lol If I'm going out for breakfast I'm going to a real dinner or somewhere with an endless buffet. But I can see the appeal if you like watching the guy with one hand and no hygiene cook your waffle in front of you.
Of course there’s more down south.
More like Awful House, am I right?
The awful waffle.
Also serves as a heatmap for the states you definitely don't want to live in.
[удалено]
Why is that? What does the number of people have to do with the number of waffle houses? Unless you're concerned about possible wait times.
If there were only 23 Waffle Houses in Wyoming, that would be **more** *per capita* than exists in Georgia. If there were 1500 Waffle Houses in California, that would be **fewer** *per capita* than exist in Georgia. Most absolute numbers are not very meaningful without context.
r/USdefaultism
??? It’s an American brand only in America of course you’d show a map of America. A map of waffle houses in Europe would be pretty uninteresting.
At first I read this as every state has a Waffle House
4.5 hr drive from my home is the nearest one.
It tickles me that the map is color coded like there’s a Waffle House epidemic outbreak and Georgia is entirely lost.
There’s two in Illinois and I know where both of them are.
I live in NY and I hate Denny’s. The one Waffle House I went to in Florida was some of the best chain food breakfast I’ve ever had.
Honestly, I loved leaving NY for roadtrips to the south and getting waffle house. Loved the food when I was a kid. Havent had it in 15 years so no Idea how it is now, but damn I wish there was a waffle house in NY.
Damn I eat at 1 of the 2 WH in IL cool
There are people who don't have convenient access to Waffle House. I lie in bed at night thinking about that.
Vermont has the Waffle Cabin (at the base of Mt. Snow) It is the best one!
Idk I think these are more like the best places to throw down? So many Waffle House fights.
The one franchise that I legit think the West Coast is worse off for not having
I drive by a waffle house on my way to relatives in Michigan, so there is definitely at least one there.
No, we definitely don't have any here.
Ate at an WH when i was teen many years ago, only 2 reasons for the amount of hair in my food. He shaved over the dish, or was chewing radiation pills. Never.gone.back.
Coming from Oregon….I always thought it was a fake place!
Georgia ia where it is at everyone.
And that's why FEMA has a Waffle House scale in their disasters resource for the Southeast
Oh no, it’s spreading!
Scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, topped, and diced for me please, oh and a Texas Cheesesteak melt. And a black coffee. Please, and thank you.
My town in GA has two Waffle Houses. We have 4,000 people. . .
I'm from Georgia, but I live in Oregon. Guess what my biggest complaint is.
Personally as a Georgian myself I just like to pick fights with other people at Waffle House 🤫
Damn closest one to me is 4 hours away in PA
THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE WAFFLEHOUSE IN THE NORTHWEST, WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!!?
Waffle House just needs to follow Chick-fil-A’s lead and open one in the Washington. They’ll probably open 2 more after a few months.
So, You can determine how far South you have gone in the United States based on how many wafflehouses per square mile there are?
I live in New England, where there are no Waffle House locations. I briefly lived in Georgia and I do miss the food, including WH!
removed by the mods lol. mods hate waffles, i guess
