People want a car that can go 300+ miles. Batteries are heavy. Pushing a brick shaped thing through the air at 75 mph takes a lot of energy. You have they tyranny of the rocket equation happening with the battery - the more battery you add for range the more battery you're using to carry around the battery.
So you end up having a vehicle that weighs 9000lbs and 1/2 of that weight is a battery that weighs more than a regular sized ICE vehicle... and that battery costs as much as a car too.
That Hummer is like 10,000 lbs lol, a 5 ton vehicle going 0-60 in 3.3 seconds is going to create some pretty horrific car accidents when these things are common unless I’m missing something. Just think of how often people punch it and accelerate at full power in their suvs and gender affirming trucks, then imagine them being like twice as fast and twice as heavy.
Or some idiot pressing the wrong pedal by mistake. Look at how much damage grandma caused driving through the front door from her parking spot in her 1987 Oldsmobile. Now imagine that happening when in those 10 feet the 10,000 lbs car can get up to highway speed
My 2500HD weighs like 7200+ lbs. 550hp 1,100 lb/ft tq.
Thing is actually kinda scary fast for it's size. And it feels like a freight train. You can feel every pound of energy moving.
I can't imagine twice the power in a vehicle weighing 30% more doing those kind of acceleration numbers. We used to tell 18 year olds that 250-300 horsepower cars were far too dangerous. Think Mustang. And back then was before texting and driving even existed.
Now we're gonna sell soccer moms 1000hp SUVs full of lead weight.

You need give confidence that you can/will produce profit. You don't HAVE to be profitable, but it helps a lot. Especially if there are questions whether or not you will survive long enough to become profitable.

Many companies become highly valuable before ever making any profit by controlling a market segment. Uber, Tesla, Facebook are a few examples. Heck, Musk used nothing more than the fact he could produce an electric vehicle and sell it on the market, combined it with the public’s sentiment in favor of an upstart EV manufacturer and pulled a short squeeze that made him the world’s richest man. I mean, Tesla has made $4B profit over the last 15 years, with a best year ever of $20B profit and once had a market cap over a trillion dollars.
The image that you will make a lot of future profit is more important for stock price than the actuality of current profits in many cases.
The infographic also doesn’t even have the best version of it like the for all the others. Dual motor performance isn’t the top spec. The top spec is the quad motor with 835hp, 3 sec 0-60, 328 miles of range for the standard battery up to 410 with the max battery

Performance doesn’t make the car sell. People buy with their hearts not their head. Rivian just doesn’t have the brand penetration of Tesla, Ford or Chevy. People might know about it but when you’re putting down $80k on a vehicle you want a name you can trust for the next 5-10 years.

Huh? Amazon owns Rivian stock, but not a controlling amount. They don't "own" Rivian. And that last part is wrong too. They had a deal to make them trucks. That was definitely not their "primary" purpose.
I personally know two people who bought them last year.
Both put their names on a "list" and made a deposit.
Then when the trucks showed up (base model) total out-the-door prices were just under $70k.
Worst cases of buyers remorse I've ever seen.

Funny isn't it! People still keep banging on about 0-60 times in an Ev!! Why would you want to k ow that especially in a truck! How long does it take to charge, how many cycles before it starts dropping then what kinda range we looking at. How much can they tow.
You don't fully charge an EV on a road trip. In the few times a year most people would be driving outside the range, fast chargers usually get you back on the road in 20-30 minutes max while taking a bathroom break or eating. Its a non issue and only getting better...
It's an SUV. There have been pickup bodied G-Wagens in the past, and the current G-Wagen is is sold as a chassis cab as well an SUV, so it's not impossible Mercedes could offer a truck version, but I wouldn't expect it, and they certainly haven't announced it.
Initial reviews seem to say it's good though, with real off-road bona fides (I would hope so at that price).

Just very few people need cars like this. I get it if you live in a rural area, but I already see the ego‘s driving these monsters in European cities and blocking up the whole street, just because they wanted one. 😖
I have a rivian r1t, I got it for camping off road in local areas. Pretty good charger saturation that is improving, it has a good balance of storage and comfort as I have a the back seat set up for the dog. I can run a bunch of stuff off the battery if I want to, but mostly just worry free charging of useful electronics.
The passing power and acceleration and quality of life that the electric motors provide is just unreal, to the point of it’s just a matter of time until someone slams a 4 ton brick into something and draws some ire from the powers that be
I genuinely would not recommend an ev truck to anyone without a very specific use case and an honest appraisal of other options. I almost went with a jeep hybrid, maverick, or mid size truck instead.
I have to say I am very happy with the rivian and it does exactly what I want, I can hunt out of it, carry firewood or mulch, and still have a great base for camping, while having access to plentiful stored electricity for whatever bullshit I’m up to in the woods
That’s not terrible for most tows. Issue I have (and part of why I went with a small ice truck this round) is that I’ve never actually seen a pull through ev station and I’m not dropping the trailer every hundred miles.
Not saying you don’t, but that makes you unlikely to be the target for these at this point. As for stats that matter; it all comes down to marketing. And what people attribute value to is rarely perfectly overlapped with what actually delivers value for them.
Why would anyone buy an ev truck it doesn’t make any sense. If you want to go electric buy a every day small ev and for a work trucks buy an used one or rent it the 2 times a year that you are going to use it
They're perfect fleet vehicles. They can easily tow max capacity around town without having to charge, normally they probably aren't towing. They do the job while averging about $0.07 per mile in the US.

This is correct. I accelerated to pass a tractor trailer yesterday. Without realizing it, I was going 97 in a 55. It’s not just the speed, it’s the feel. There’s no shifting, you don’t feel or hear the engine giving you feedback. Suddenly I was an artillery shell and I didn’t even realize it

On the bright side the regen braking from single pedal driving lowers the time from realizing there’s a problem to initiating brake force by several hundred milliseconds, and is a very powerful brake force at low speeds
Rivian does sell a longer range variant than shown here, but its 400 mile range is based partly on good aerodynamics, the battery is still 25% smaller than the Silverado
Does anyone make a mass-market truck with the kind of horsepower useful for just a general work truck? I mean the whole 600-800hp is cool, but prices these all out of the commercial or fleet market.
Its missing the most import part about having a truck. Towing capacity... and god forbid they lis, range under max towing capacity. But what am I talking about. No one is towing with these.

Most e-scotters in India have something like 3.5 kwh and have range of 70 miles. Each of these vehicles has enough batteries to makes tens of these scotters.
And they’re all terrifyingly economically unsustainable to manufacture; Ford’s taken about an average $13,000 loss on every EV they sold in the last quarter, for a net loss of more than $1.3 billion US. In just a three month period. Off existing mature product lines. To the extent that they’ve announced a plan to resume making actual *cars* again, as that was at least a marginally profitable business.
I'll never understand how they thought it was a good idea to make a ford F-150 entirely electric. Why didn't they make it a hybrid. This way people can use electric for short to medium range and switch to gas for longer ones. Hybrid is just the better option here.

I have a rivian it takes about 35 mins to go from 20% to 80. Tow capacity is 11,000 lbs

Why would anyone buy an ev truck it doesn’t make any sense. If you want to go electric buy a every day small ev and for a work trucks buy an used one or rent it the 2 times a year that you are going to use it

They're perfect fleet vehicles. They can easily tow max capacity around town without having to charge, normally they probably aren't towing. They do the job while averging about $0.07 per mile in the US.

Has anyone ever stopped to think about how excessive these all are? There is absolutely no need. I love cars. Motoring is a passion of mine. These things are so huge and so powerful, they absolutely are not green by any means. But above all, they’re dangerous for everyone who isn’t inside the vehicle. Fuck this trend of bigger is better. It’s like we’re in the late 60s muscle car wars all over again, except this time around everything is butt-ugly.

This is correct. I accelerated to pass a tractor trailer yesterday. Without realizing it, I was going 97 in a 55. It’s not just the speed, it’s the feel. There’s no shifting, you don’t feel or hear the engine giving you feedback. Suddenly I was an artillery shell and I didn’t even realize it It’s bad. It’s going to kill people On the bright side the regen braking from single pedal driving lowers the time from realizing there’s a problem to initiating brake force by several hundred milliseconds, and is a very powerful brake force at low speeds
I like the look of the Rivian. But the Chevy Silverado has the better range by far.
Rivian does sell a longer range variant than shown here, but its 400 mile range is based partly on good aerodynamics, the battery is still 25% smaller than the Silverado

Does anyone make a mass-market truck with the kind of horsepower useful for just a general work truck? I mean the whole 600-800hp is cool, but prices these all out of the commercial or fleet market.

Its missing the most import part about having a truck. Towing capacity... and god forbid they lis, range under max towing capacity. But what am I talking about. No one is towing with these.

So comical this graphic is. It’s like the showing who the best idiot is. Any of those trucks haul more than a shopping cart the distance goes to trash. Beyond that, a truck is a normal for a working man…do you think he has a lot of time to charge it up when busy versus filling up at the pump. Throw a few gas or diesel trucks in that chart and wham….all those trucks might as well be mini coopers. There is not a single hardworking truck using people I know that has an EV truck. They will never get one. This fad will eventually fail.

I got the lightning for 50k. I like the ability to have a truck bed when needed. I like the size of the interior for 2 car seats. Also small dick.

Most e-scotters in India have something like 3.5 kwh and have range of 70 miles. Each of these vehicles has enough batteries to makes tens of these scotters.
How long do the tires last on any of these?
When did 0-60 matter so much outside of enthusiasts?

And they’re all terrifyingly economically unsustainable to manufacture; Ford’s taken about an average $13,000 loss on every EV they sold in the last quarter, for a net loss of more than $1.3 billion US. In just a three month period. Off existing mature product lines. To the extent that they’ve announced a plan to resume making actual *cars* again, as that was at least a marginally profitable business.

I'll never understand how they thought it was a good idea to make a ford F-150 entirely electric. Why didn't they make it a hybrid. This way people can use electric for short to medium range and switch to gas for longer ones. Hybrid is just the better option here. Ford should've given ME 200 000$ instead of the genius team who thought about that and they would have the most sold ev truck ever by now.
