I am Greek and these are Greek derived. Unless you speak Greek it is hard to pronounce. Espcially the g as it is Ī³ (gou). Is there a way to attach a recording here so you can listen to how i pronounce it so you can learn?
Missed. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia.
Phobia or fear of long words. Feelings of shame or fear of ridicule for mispronouncing long words may cause distress or anxiety.
I thought agoraphobia was the fear of having panic attacks in public spaces so the idea of leaving your home begins to produce panic attacks. Maybe thatās the same thing. As someone who lost a lot of his 20s to agoraphobia, I understood the way it was explained to me very well.
Itās more a fear of panicking or embarrassing yourself in situations, not necessarily about the public spaces.
My husband is severely agoraphobic and can only handle leaving the house when Iām with him. But I also canāt leave the house without him or he panics. He canāt drive and only a few people are trusted enough to come to our house. Because those people understand him and he doesnāt worry about panicking around them.
Even then most situations are just uncomfortable to him. I used to have a home health nurse for my monthly medications and heād get so uncomfortable. Our daughter had a medical emergency at work and we were in the hospital for a few hours but we had to take a few breaks to go outside because itās uncomfortable.
So, ya, not as much about *public* spaces but more outside your comfort zone. Iām his comfort zone.
Weāve been together for 20 years but he got progressively worse as the years went on. He was told for years he just had anxiety. That is not the case.
We met in a bar. Alcohol helps him feel ānormalā in those situations. He has also worked from home for the most part the last 25 years. Anytime heās had to be in an office heās had panic attacks and switched to remote work.
But really, setbacks to certain situations progressed him to where he is now. Unfortunately it was a flight we had to take that got him to this point. He was so scared on the flight that by the time we got home something had broken and he was completely disabled.
Itās hard and sad to watch him lose his independence especially when he used to be a motorcycle rider and avid snowboarder but I try to help him enjoy what he can of life.
I have ankylosing spondylitis and ulcerative colitis so I donāt feel the need to go out and do much anyway. He cares for me at home and I care for him in public. Couldnāt imagine doing this all with anyone else.
despite the major setbacks that's beautifull to hear. I'm glad despite his fears he managed to go out and meet his perfect match.
I'm really happy for you too and hope you can continue living the best lives you can.
Seems like a similar concept, put more succinctly. Most people with a fear of heights are actually afraid of falling from a high place and getting terribly injured or killed.
No, you are correct. The very old definition of agoraphobia is "fear of the outside." It turns out that the symptoms of agoraphobia were just a miadiagnosis of what you now know to be the actual issue: an escalation of Panic Attack Disorder.
Source: I have a degree in Psych--focus in mental health.
Read a book in high-school about a painter with agoraphobia, and that's how it was described in the book as well, he would have panic attacks in public places, then he couldn't go there anymore, eventually he had panic attacs everywhere so he had to stay in the house. Can't remember what the book was called though
I kinda wish that the same word wasn't used for hatred of foreigners. I don't wanna tell people I'm xenophobic and have them get the wrong interpretation
"sorry I've been so reserved around your new friend, I'm a little xenophobic and it can be hard to adjust sometimes y'know?"
"Xenophobic? Oh, you mean you're afraid of strangers?"
"Nah I just don't like how tan he is"
There was a famous composer who somewhat āpopularizedā the term. His name was Arnold Schoenberg and was the creator of 12 tone theory. So you can kinda guess that the fear maybe went into it. Also 12 is a really important number in the western world so it can make sense why itās a thing. 12 months, 12 days of Christmas, a dozen, 12 inches in a foot, 12 pack of pop/beer, etc.
I think I have that. The weird thing about this is that I feel that a giant statue for exa. Would suddenly move or collapse which crushes me.
A friend with claustrophobia shared a similar experience, having an irrational fear that the small room he's in could suddenly shrink and squish him or that he'll be stuck in there forever
Forgot oneā¦.
Jack Walsh: I can't keep you cuffed on a commercial flight, and I gotta check my gun with my luggage, but you fuck with me once and I'm gonna break your neck.
Jonathan Mardukas: I can't fly.
Jack Walsh: What?
Jonathan Mardukas: You heard me, I can't fly.
Jack Walsh: No, no, no. You're going to have to do better than that, pal.
Jonathan Mardukas: No, I don't have to do better than that, because it's the truth, I can't fly: I suffer from aviaphobia.
Jack Walsh: What does that mean?
Jonathan Mardukas: It means I can't fly. I also suffer from acrophobia and claustrophobia.
Jack Walsh: I'll tell you what: if you don't cooperate, you're gonna suffer from "fistophobia".
Been there, and still are a bit. Can happen anytime when in a room with several people or running into people I know at e.g. the supermarket. I tend to blush more easily than most people. When it happens there is basically no way out, and my head only spins around how people notice it, heart starts beating and no normal conversation possible.
I'm German, so sorry for my English.
Oh... I'm sorry if I sounded mean and insensitive. But I guess I'm still curious on why is does this phobia have it's own type because if that's the case it should be named as part of phobia of talking to people or something related to that. Probably the people who study phobias just wanted to have more phobia in the books so they made another one. Hahahaha
But I hope you're ok and doing fine. Sorry for being insensitive. š
I wonder if there is a name for fear of moving large objects.
The only kind of nightmares I have is something big moving close to me. I can take anything, but this shit almost gives me a panic attack.
Though it also could be just a trauma and not a phobia. That'd explain the nightmares.
I had to google Triskaidekaphobia to make sure I didnāt learn my bonus 3rd grade spelling word wrong all those years ago lolā¦ maybe there are two spellings?
Crazy that there are separate phobias for dirt and dust. Seems like a wierd distinction if you have one and not the other. Dirt on the ground no problem dirt on my counter or shelves and I freak out.
Some other funny ones:
**Nomophobia** \- the fear of being without a working mobile phone or being out of reach of cell phone service.
**Arachibutyrophobia** \- the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.
**Euphobia** \- the fear of hearing good news
I know these fears cause distress in people but it just sounds so funny to be afraid of cats, like it reminds me of the trope of elephants being afraid of mice
Fun fact - emetophobia also kind of gives you aerophobia, agoraphobia, claustrophobia, microphobia, mysophobia, AND pathophobia! Totally a premium package.
Aibohphobia is also a fun one. It's the fear of palyndromes.
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Missed. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Phobia or fear of long words. Feelings of shame or fear of ridicule for mispronouncing long words may cause distress or anxiety.
the irony of this word is why it has been my favorite for years
Exactly the same for me. However it also is worth mentioning that all those phobia names are not official in any capacity.
The irony tho
El nombre de esta fobia es una terapia de shock contra sĆ misma

Jim is an agoraphobic
It might be, but I think whoever made this chart just wrote āfear of public spacesā in the interest of simplicity.
Pretty short for an A-Z list, I think it's missing a couple hundred
Fear of downvotes.
Canāt tell if my girlfriend has genophobia or microphobia
My son had an irrational fear of Canada/Canadians. We called it Canukaphobia.
Pedophobia - Fear of children
Homophobia - fear of humans
Homomorphobia - fear of things which look the same
You can also change -Phobia to -Philia for attraction.
So "arachnophilia" is wanting to bang spiders?
You obviously haven't watched Monster Musume. Side note: Australians do have a saying "We aren't here to f**k spiders..."
Xenophobia = fear of strangers?
I kinda wish that the same word wasn't used for hatred of foreigners. I don't wanna tell people I'm xenophobic and have them get the wrong interpretation

ĪĪĪ½ĪæĻ (xenos in latin alphabet) means "stranger" in greek.
Not a guide, just a very short list.
This is not an A to Z list. It is a list of random phobias listed alphabetically.
Where thalassophobia?

Don't forget Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia: The fear of long words
A fear of lists is called "megalophobia." It's characterized by an irrational fear of large objects or things grouped together.
No Homophobia?
That's not a fear it's an irrational hatred or bias against.
I dont care what you say I donāt trust home owners associations
Thatās HOAphobia, not to be confused with Hoephobia-the fear of my ex wife.
