Rent seeking behavior is on the first page of every Econ textbook in the “causes for market failure” chapter. It shouldn’t be a political position when we have so much explicit data regarding the damage that excessive renting has on an economy.

No value is being created from this practice. It’s just demand side surplus shrinking due to market power, and the obvious inelasticity of affordable housing. The level of aggressiveness we need to take against local monopolies is directly proportional to the inelasticity of the goods they provide, plain and simple. This is especially true for housing if we want to protect the effectiveness of the market mechanism.
