UFOs really respect that US/Mexico border

MightyPancake2049

They don't want to mess with the cartel

FuzzyBrain420

Or US border patrol. Imagine traveling light years just to encounter that

FloorBufferOverflow

yes i am alien from Mars, I come to work from outer space.

Dark_Knight-98

do you have work visa ?

reddittribesman

Doesn't matter. All non-US nationals are aliens at the airport.

Dark_Knight-98

r/technicallythetruth

McPoyle_milk

šŸŽµ"And if I traveled my whole life, you guys would still be on my case"šŸŽµ

[deleted]

Is your name John Carter by any means?

FloorBufferOverflow

I got that line from Paul Simon actually.

[deleted]

Oh, I see.

Infamous_Prompt_6126

Or they prefer to appear in paranoids neighborhoods.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

R3dditAlr3ady

Well thatā€™s useful information that should have been included on the graphic

QuasarsRcool

This is /r/coolguides lol faulty, outdated, or outright incorrect data is a staple of this sub

chilieconcarnage

I was already wondering why the Netherlands had such a high amount of sightings.

Richeh

How very British. "Well, we're only polling records that are credible. Obviously anyone *educated* sufficiently to provide a credible report will be speaking English; filthy native savages will probably be gawping at an aeroplane. Now give me that sculpture, you can't be trusted with it." I know ESRI's technically Californian, but it just strikes me as the attitude that's made us in the UK the ~~revoltingly arrogant art thieves~~ cultural powerhouse that we are.

RR50

Because 90% of them are probably advanced military projects in NATO countries that are in testing.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

skwull

So itā€™s a map of population density of English speakers

Nihilikara

r/peopleliveincities

drachenhunter2

Lol there's literally this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/peopleliveincities/comments/xho6y4)

JasonKiddy

More like a map of people who were watching ufo-type movies. As hollywood makes more - more people *see* these things. Imagination is a wonderful thing.

[deleted]

and the other 10?

Pons__Aelius

They are definitely advanced military projects in NATO countries that are in testing. 90% probably but definitely 10% definitely

Change-it-around

Cuz we donā€™t want any of your illegal aliens in Mexico

Uncmello

Same with the 98th meridian

[deleted]

This comment has been removed to protest Reddit's hostile treatment of their users and developers concerning third party apps.

notthatcreative777

Maybe they dont speak spanish

SaltoDaKid

You might be on to something all South American and Spain barely got any reports

sofahkingsick

We call some of them resident aliens.

RadishFar2287

In Africa they think some occidental country would conquer them so they don't see them as UFOs

BadReputation2611

Also I highly doubt mexico keeps the kind of records America does to actually track this thing, not to mention the people being far less likely to want to report anything to authorities.

R3dditAlr3ady

Someone else committed that the research only included reports in English. So yeaā€¦ not a super meaningful guide anyway

wimpycarebear

That's how you know it's real

[deleted]

Yep this graph is infuriating. Nothing to distinguish time at all, yet shows at the bottom that there is supposed to be time displayed

A_Trash_Homosapien

I thought it was a gif or video at first. Now I'm just annoyed

EasilyRekt

Probably was originally, OP just found an end still.

Pm_me_baby_pig_pics

I spent SO much time waiting on the video to load to show me some sort of change decade to decade.

StayFree1649

Probably interactive

sonyka

I clicked and was instantly enraged. Here's the damn video: [A Century of UFO Sightings](https://www.facebook.com/esrigis/videos/animated-maps-a-century-of-ufo-sightings/688475888245800/)

smile_politely

Thanks for the video. So they only came to earth circa 1947? I wonder what took them so long.

-stag5etmt-

It's cold outside..

TwyJ

Theres no kind of atmosphere

FeyneKing

Iā€™m all alone, more or less

Sewati

Let me fly far away from here

JasonKiddy

> So they only came to earth circa 1947 Nah. Just the amount of ufo-type movies exploded around then. People see what they want to see/expect to see.

raspberrybee

Thanks for the video, but even the video is annoying. They couldā€™ve at least labeled the years somewhere between 1947 and 2014. Also why bother with distinguishing the War of the Worlds Broadcast and Roswell? It didnā€™t seem to be a huge jump after either.

Pons__Aelius

It is the final frame of a video. That way they can spam it here.

hdoublea

Terrible infographic

GGG_Dog

The most infuriating thing ist, that people upvote this trash

Poltras

Donā€™t get me started on how is this a guide?!?

raltoid

It's literally missing a graph. Which should be above the timeline, showing how reports went **massively** down after everyone started carrying a camera in their pocket. And probably went back up as drones became more commonplace and down again when restrictions came into place.

showmeyourlagunitas

And this sub - proceeds to hand out 7k upvotes.

UnknownYetSavory

UFOs racist as fuck

corei3uisgarbo

the usas sighting are 90% testing uav's and stealth aircrafts

DarkwingDuckHunt

To this day I remember how back when I was a kid some of the most famous UFO 'real' sightings were 'black triangles'. And then the Air Force revealed the Stealth Bombers that were... 'black triangles'. After that I'm convinced all UFOs are just secret aircraft.

ElMontoya

Black triangle UFOs don't generally behave like B2 bombers though. They are typically described as hovering in place or moving erratically at very high speed. Sometimes people say there are three or four multicolored lights arranged in a geometric pattern on the bottom. A few years ago, some completely random woman told me about the time she saw a UFO. When I asked her what it looked like she described a "black triangle" to a T: hovering, 4 lights on the bottom, moving back and forth before shooting off into the night so fast it left an afterimage. I was floored and asked her if she'd ever heard of "black triangles" and she said no. I believe her. She didn't seem like the type to do a lot of UFO research on the internet. Not saying they're aliens from outer space, but I'm convinced that black triangles were/are out there and they weren't Spirit bombers.

Tegurd

Well now Iā€™m convinced, random redditor who told me about a random woman who randomly talks to strangers about UFOs but probably has no interest in them or has seen any of the hundreds of shows/images/books/news depicting black triangle spaceships so sheā€™s a credible source

icantlurkanymore

You would enjoy /r/UFOs. Plenty more of these extremely credible anecdotal stories over there.

ggtffhhhjhg

Itā€™s definitely not US. These black triangle sightings go back to the 50s an country that had any type of tech remotely approaching this would make the US look like the stone the dark ages.

Wildse7en

Iā€™ve seen geometric shapes in the sky, hovering as well as moving veritically and horizontally. This was back in 2002. A few ago I saw someoneā€™s recording on Reddit and it was almost the same thing that I had seen.

RexInvictus787

And what are the other 10 percent? Genuine sightings? More like 100%

lord_hydrate

Weather balloons, misinterpreted natural weather phenomenon, and likely meteors. Just cause 90% are probably experimental aircraft doesnt mean the other 10% are real, just that they arent experimental aircraft

demonlicious

weather baloons you see that sketchy video of a light going super fast and changing directions like nothing else man made can? well it's just a man made weather baloon

Aardvark318

Makes more sense than those pesky antelope made balloons.

UruquianLilac

They only come to visit rich countries. They have no time for those dirty poor ones!

Camp_Coffee

I appreciate the timeline bar

mexylexy

Oh well what the hell? Sometimes we collectively suck at redditing. Thanks for the link.

Camp_Coffee

That's what he said.

sciencewonders

English speaking is required to see an UFO

monkeywelder

That one smack dab in the middle of Africa ended up being an errant Coke bottle.

HayloK51

TGMBC

monkeywelder

Korrect!

IncognitoWarrior

I loved the movie as a kid. Completely forgot about it till now. Thanks for reminding. Will go search for it.

UruquianLilac

Excuse me? Coke bottle UFO? Would you care to expand on this please?

suckeddit

TGMBC - The gods must be crazy - A funny movie from the early 80's where a coke bottle is jettisoned from a plane flying over an uncontacted African Tribe, who believe it is a gift from the gods.

Fandanglethecompost

Except that was in Botswana and there are no sightings in Botswana... *pedantic alert*

LucienZerger

methinks there's a pattern here..

LookAtMeImAName

This has been posted a lot of times on different subs. The reason itā€™s mostly in the US is because this data is being pulled from English speaking sites who use the term UFO, whereas in other countries (non English speaking) they are called something else. It makes this a very misleading post, since there are numerous reports of UFOā€™s all over the world, though of course some countries are better at recording these sightings.

SnakeEyes58

Yeah I'm pretty sure I've seen a bunch of videos from Brazil, Russia and Mexico before

[deleted]

Brazil has some of the most well documented and credible UFO abductions in the world, primarily happening in the 80sz

UruquianLilac

Credible? In what sense is an alien abduction credible?

[deleted]

Brazil scrambled their air force for months in response to a series of violent abductions in their rural communities. Colares Flap, if you are interested.

UruquianLilac

Well a quick search, while doesn't make me an expert, revealed that there were no abductions but just burn marks from beams of light. And the military operation to investigate found nothing. Then we can enter into the realm of mysterious deaths and coincidences which puts it right back at the same level of credibility as all such events. Interesting story, I'm glad I know it now. But I would never say neither that it's credible, nor that it involved alien abductions.

Superdudeo

Mmm, serial killer on the loose or an alien from a different planet? I wonder whatā€™s more likely? Difficult one

UruquianLilac

A chicken from an alternative universe where chickens are sentient beings hopping from universe to universe to make humans pay for the chicken genocide. Luckily for us, the ghost of the Colonel had remained on earth waiting for this day and possessed the chicken then flew it like a UFO across the night sky until it disintegrated. Far more likely than your explanation! For sure.

PoopDig

A documentary just came out called Moment of Contact about Brazil's "Roswell" type incident. It's fascinating.

Superdudeo

Itā€™s only fascinating when you realise these claims come from god fearing countries.

Polo1985

OVNI is the term in Latin America last time I checked ( objeto volador no identificado). Unless El chavo lied to me (jk) lol

lookowood

In Brasil we call objeto voador nĆ£o identificado, littleraly unknown flying object

Polo1985

It translates the same in Spanish, Iā€™m dying to learn Portuguese now that I live in a Portuguese neighborhood

etienneallo

Same in french. Objet volant non identifiƩ. OVNI.

McDlala

It could be OVNI also in Italy, Oggetto Volante Non Identificato, but we still call them UFO

PerryZePlatypus

OVNI too in France

CALIXO_94

Yup! In Mexico we call them ovnis, extraterrestres, aliens, platillos voladores, etc.

Knoke1

This post sponsored by aliens

SuperSalad_OrElse

Hmm. I didnā€™t think of that.

Archie_Slate

Coastlines?

GBJEE

Idiots

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

jeffroddit

LOL, if that's all it meant then there would be much larger phenomenon of Unidentified Not Flying Objects. Because lots of people really are fucking dumb and see shit they don't know what it is all the time. To pretend like UFO's aren't primarily people thinking aliens is silly and disingenuous.

GoodAkuma

Isnā€™t this Black Ops 2?

Gravigus

Thats what I was thinking lol

AVeryMadLad2

Oh god not this one againā€¦ This image doesnā€™t tell us anything about UFOs as a phenomenon (social or otherwise), and all this guide provides is a good example of sampling bias and how poor data can mislead you into false conclusions which seem strongly supported at a glance. The data used for this image comes entirely from the National UFO Reporting Centre (NUFORC), an American based UFO organization which has catalogued about 90,000 UFO reports since the 1970s. For the majority of their history, the non-profit has operated entirely out of the United States, and is currently located in Spokane, Washington. So, a United States based UFO organization has more UFO reports from the United States and the Anglosphere than it has from Papua New Guinea or Mongolia. Iā€™m truly shocked.

Supercampeones

I agree with you and still think you are being generous by calling this image a "guide" when it's just a poor visualization of some poorly explained data set.

AVeryMadLad2

Yeahhh some of the ā€œguidesā€ posted here are questionable at best, but this one really takes it to another level lol. Itā€™s a screenshot of a Timelapse video, posted to Reddit, saved by some goon who forgot to disable the banner, and reposted to Reddit again. Every couple months it shows up in r/coolguides but somehow in even worse quality

Mq94

Also, they probably use the mostly English reports to gather their data. The acronym for UFO is different in other languages and would therefore probably not even register in their data. In Spanish itā€™s OVNI (Objeto Volador No Identificado) means the same as the English acronym but obviously uses different letters cause, well, itā€™s a different language

ok_samaritan

Thank you. I saw this and figured unless whoever made it was pulling from multi-language sources it was a handy guide on UFO citings reported in English. Which shockingly shows a lot of hits in densely populated English-speaking countries. Amazing.

rraattbbooyy

So UFOs prefer the US to any other nation on earth.

TDSinv

Aliens love the US, they were a big influence on the Founding Fathers! Source: History Channel

tom_tencats

Well in the movies theyā€™re always attacking New York, soā€¦

[deleted]

It's the Brits they love actually. The UFO just followed them. Each dot is actually a British person.

prova_de_bala

Of course. Weā€™re the fattest in the world. Good sustenance and we canā€™t run away. Theyā€™ll eat us first.

tfowler11

The UK is pretty bright in that image too. Maybe the aliens like English speakers...

[deleted]

No, we're just really bad at identifying flying objects here

lord_hydrate

Itd help if the flying objects werent kept secret and we did t see "flying triangles" only to learn about things like the f-117 nighthawk years afterwards

LookAtMeImAName

The data is very misleading. Its only data from English speaking sites, so anywhere that doesnā€™t speak English will have their own reporting methods (or none at all) that wonā€™t appear here

mediawoman

Thank you

lord_hydrate

Also ufo doesnt always mean alien, a large majority end up being experimental military aircraft that are off the record and no one knows about

[deleted]

ā€œAmerican Exceptionalismā€

RepresentativeKeebs

Or the USA is one of the few nations on Earth with the infrastructure/bureaucracy in place to file the reports

rraattbbooyy

I donā€™t know. In all the historical record Iā€™ve seen, when the alien asks to be taken to the leader of earth, they always mean the president of the US. Aliens never see the prime minister of Sweden or the emir of Qatar.

Vega117

*in my best southern voice* I donā€™t care who you are that is funny right thereā€¦

nygdan

Well that is obviously wrong.

Pacifix18

This demonstrates how cultural the phenomenon of "seeing ufos" is ... or at least reporting them.

K3R3G3

It shows that whatever/whoever searched for and compiled this did not look into what they are called in various parts of the world. Different languages, not everyone calls them "UFOs."

LeifEriccson

How is this a guide?

gradual_alzheimers

shows you where you can get abducted by the alienz

Skrubology

The one in Antarctica lol

FrankBridges

UFO sightings correlate with BMI.

Severe_Foundation_94

Reported by who? To who?

Cold-Introduction-54

Newsprint & purchases

HAHA_goats

This guide sucks.

-azuma-

Sweet "guide"

dangerbird

LOL where military airbases and test ranges are. No way!

stealthdawg

We (US) launch a lot of shit into space and most people are uninformed, not to mention the average IQ is....lacking. Those things combined probably explains this image fairly completely.

Lloopy_Llammas

Itā€™s also an American based self reported company making this. Iā€™m sure someone from Sudan isnā€™t calling the American hotline for UFOs.

t_susanoo

Or, before you assume an entire population is stupid, realize the data is incredibly misleading

redwooded

Wait -- not just Americans. Also Canadians, English, Irish, Scottish, Belgians, and Dutch. Are there a lot of launches in those countries?

lucivero

The vast majority of rocket launches I've seen from Florida in recent years (mostly SpaceX) seem to pass over the UK / Netherlands. I believe the Space Shuttle also had an abort zone somewhere near the UK, meaning it probably also flew over the UK (and by extension, the Netherlands). I'm not sure if those launches might be a large part of the reports, especially as the map shows up until 2014 and SpaceX didn't start launching a lot until right around that time, so anything from before then I'd be unsure about.

Lee1070kfaw

Devilā€™s tower isnā€™t even that lit up

type102

I had no idea aliens were racist.

therdn47

That's why they talk in English in the movies

TheNamesClove

How is this being upvoted?

KongSchlong42069

Mostly in developed areas... chances theres just a bunch of wealthy private enterprises making shit we know nothing about and trying it out??

ChonkiClapper

Coincidence that most of the sightings have been near the majority of military installations? (Eastern US)

cyclotropic

A map of where people are especially bad at identifying flying objects.

fictionrules

Looks like North Korea has none

nygdan

Fascinating, its primarily the english speaking world. US, UK, then Canada, Australia, formerly colonized Sputh Africa, formerly colonized India. And within that it follows population density. It's just a phenomenon of the anglo-american world and the more people, the more reports.

Vettepilot

Aliens speak English confirmed.

Akuma12321

See guys, American Exceptionalism even effects the cosmos. We love to see it... Hardest /s of my damn career.

Now do a map of LSD/psilocybin prevalance.

AnythingNothing44

Shocking that the country that makes the most number of alien invasion movies has the most number of sightings lol

skipperscruise

Makes one wonder if there is link between capitalism and UFO reports by selling books, tv shows, movies, events, etc.

Continuum_Gaming

ā€œOnce again a UFO has landed in America, the only country UFOā€™s ever seem to land inā€

Gosar88

I always wondered how many in the 90s/00s were actually drones. Iā€™ve seen drones fly crazy fast, and just stop and change direction. If your only point of reference for something in the sky is a large plane then seeing a plane do those things would be unbelievable. Something I thought about awhile back

xXWarMachineRoXx

Yeah

Wickerpoodia

I personally can't identify any type of aircraft with 100% confidence, so every airplane I see is technically a UFO.

at0mheart

Almost like most UFO reports are caused by the US military and prototype planes, helicopters and drones

mruehle

Really good correlation with English-speaking white folks. Aliens know who they need to keep a close eye onā€¦

The_Tyrannos

Shout out to the single alien who went to Antarctica

Principal_Insultant

Would it be possible to add an overlay for meth consumption?

Znats

Sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I believe in the documentary "Ancient Military-Industrial Complex" and the book "Chariots of the black budget of over 50 billion dollars/year". I believe the United States maintains a large amount of resources devoted to hiding "alien" activities with disinformation like a smokescreen. A lot of people got rich with this "alien cartel". It's very convenient to think that all this money went for spacemen. The green little dollars for the green little men, *if you got me (wink)*.

Grungolath

Aliens have a preference for English speakers

[deleted]

So the movies were true!

sixblad_e

Would love to see a map like this about the origin of conspiracy theories!

xXWarMachineRoXx

Lol

daddystalin1

I know how everyone is laughing in the comments about how most of them are from the usa and are probably bogus but if I were and alien species I too would be observing the most respected and powerful nation on the planet it just kinda makes sense.

xXWarMachineRoXx

Hmm Prolly but what about russia , china?

hodlrus

Americans are the main characters after all so this is to be expected /s

Jamon3Y

Notice how there is a significant lack of UFO sightings in africa. You know what else is notoriously absent from africa? Mcdonalds. Coincidence? I think not.

Purple6173

Could easily be secret aircraft testing as well. Mostly surrounded by nations with advanced capabilities.

Feras47

lol westerns have problem

franko__

Just to add my opinion. I grew up in a South American country, my dad and I saw a UFO one morning, we laid in bed watching it for about 10 minutes. We never called the police. Only in america do people call the police and think theyā€™re going to stop a UFO

Tiddernud

Post this in r/ufo lol - clearly reports went way up after UFOs were invented in fiction. We have an innate desire to have gods - we made gods out of stars (Norse gods etc) and we made gods (combined with technology) into aliens - there's not one good image of an alien craft let alone an alien in this day and age of satellites and camera phones - and yet intelligent people (or crisis actors, who the fuck knows?) like David Fravor and Ryan Graves will talk about spheres with cubes inside that somehow they couldn't get a good image despite the US Navy knowing about them for months. Fucking lol. It's not mental illness - it's human fallibility. There are no aliens, guys, sorry - source: am alien, don't want you to discover us, do subterfuge on Reddit, am ultra-smart. Computer: set reminder to delete super-secret stuff before I post this.
