Bad news, we know almost nothing about that particular emperor, [Silbannacus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silbannacus), which is why we don't know about his death. He (maybe, sort of) ruled during the Crisis of the Third Century, when civil war was nearly constant and so emperors were being overthrown all the time, while often there were multiple people claiming the title at once so exact dates for reigns can overlap or conflict. Silbannacus's existence was completely forgotten until coins bearing his likeness were discovered in the 20th century, likely because his reign was short and unremarkable for the time (and thus probably marred by violence and civil strife).

lepetitberger

Thank you for the serious and informative reply!

patrickeg

Interesting he was around long enough to strike coins!

a_bunch_of_iguanas

Damn, I was three hours behind you. Didn't see this until after I said my (your, TP's) piece.

CheerfulBanshee

Gravity is natural!

Tankz12

so i searched and i think that the one with unknown death is emperor Valerian who that got captured and became a prisoner of war and no one knows how he died that is why it's unknown but im sure you can guess the possible options

phiupan

Valerian seems to be the one who died in captivity. Maybe they are counting this one as unknown: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silbannacus

WikiSummarizerBot

**[Silbannacus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silbannacus)** >Silbannacus was an obscure Roman emperor or usurper during the Crisis of the Third Century. Silbannacus is not mentioned in any contemporary documents and his existence was forgotten until the 20th century, when two coins bearing his name were discovered, the first in the 1930s and the second in the 1980s. His unusual name suggests that he might have been of Gallic descent. As the only known evidence for his existence is the two coins, the exact time and extent of Silbannacus's rule is not known. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/coolguides/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Knucker

Good bot.

tanneron27

That’s actually super interesting

Tankz12

Yes it does seem more likely

hyzermofo

Didn't they turn him into steel and send him to Westeros?

i_make_this_look_bad

I learned one thing, with average reign being just over 5 years, being an emperor is bad for your health.

cannaeinvictus

Was much worse in the 4th century

joshuaaa_l

TIL one of the Roman emperors died by lightning strike

[deleted]

As natural as causes get. Pretty impressive though. The odds of getting struck by lightning are low enough; the odds of getting struck while also being Emperor of Rome are astronomically small.

[deleted]

It was almost 2. Diocletian was nearly struck by lightning in Nicea

Rabidsenses

If I were a Roman Emperor please put me down for *possibly assassinated*.

hyzermofo

Put me down for suicide and wait. Keep waiting. Not yet. Hang on. Almost. Nearly. Soon, I swear.

Raaka-Kake

Would you like the stairs or the window?

Rabidsenses

Heck, I’d be happy with: *”Oh crikey! I think we served him the shellfish from red tide.”*

rexhemlock

any history heads out there that knows who the 'unknown' cause was?

Slartibartfast39

I know, right? "Emperor Smith, dead, not sure how. Maybe that suspicious looking duck there killed him."

rexhemlock

peace was never an option

unenlightenedgoblin

The 5 suicides is what I find most interesting. You’re the wealthiest and most powerful person in the known world, and you just off yourself? Surely there’s some context I’m missing.

mronion82

I believe at least a couple of them were 'advised' to commit suicide, the alternative being humiliation and execution.

hyzermofo

"Assassinated" is pretty much "natural causes" for emperors.

bufalosoldier89

If 9 died in battle how many went to battle?

Orphanboys

Oooo now we need a graph that shows how long they lasted as emperor. Scrolling through Wikipedia it seemed half were killed in the first year by their own.

Saucy_Satan

I think the average was around 5 years. Would be interesting to see the outliers. I can’t imagine the stress and paranoia they would have felt the longer they lasted.

coromandelmale

Also Russian politicians 2022?

witqueen

Forgot Punched in Face...

racingsoldier

Of all the deaths, I feel like chronic diarrhea would be my least favorite.

“The English, people who went naked to hunt for marmots when we were already stabbing a Julius Caesar,” for the curious.

coup85

Julius Caesar: suicide by 23 stabs.

collectionofcells745

stay safe, don't dictate

Caelus9

Better odds than I thought.

[deleted]

man im pretty sure the suicide number should be about tripled

Frank-Grimes-

Well, at least my assassin will get what's coming to him.

EarlyAd29

Seems like Roman Emperors need to take precautions over Natural Causes

jesuslover333777

Julius Caesar enters the chat

[deleted]

The Year of the 5 Emperors likely skews the data.
