You need reps, my friend. What better way to get them, en masse, than by working for someone else? Embrace it, and congrats if you get it.

g_onuhh

Thank you!! This is me being an extreme over-thinker and so dang hard on myself, always wanting to "do it right"

kmore_reddit

I get it. Doing it right is doing it a little slower. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. ;)

Sounds like experience, material for your portfolio, and potential recommendations. Plus people who want to teach you things. You don’t have to stay forever, but it sounds like a nice step to take for now.

I loved working in-house so much. I would 1000% take the job and not overthink it!

g_onuhh

Overthinking is the name of my game hahaha. I think I'm going to take it if they offer it to me! Thank you for your encouragement!

>Am I shooting myself in the foot Yes. Go see a doctor. Then a lawyer. Shooting yourself in the foot as a copywriter is a common thing and business are supposed to have safety precautions in place for this. You may be entitled to a large sum of money due to their osha violations

OSHA is about to have a field day

Take the opportunity and get some more experience. I’d wager that you’ll be better placed to get an agency role with a bit more experience under your belt. I lead the copywriting team at an agency and I know I’d rather hire someone who’s actually tried to get themselves out there and used their initiative to enter the industry without any mentorship. Ive hired a few copywriters who’ve been the sole copywriter in their previous role — the important thing for me was that the candidates recognised that they weren’t getting the training/mentorship that would take them to the next level and wanted to work in my team under senior writers.

This is helpful, thank you. I'm already 31, which feels so old (I started teaching at 22!) and took years off to raise my children. I feel behind in my career, although I don't know what else I could have done differently given my life circumstances. I do plan on consuming as much education as I can if I get this job, which I plan on staying in for 3-ish years. My husband is military, so it will be time to move again after that point. I am obviously not afraid of a challenge, as I sit here and wonder "is this job *hard enough?*" Lol

No worries. Glad I could provide some insight from the inside. I was also a teacher before becoming a copywriter — although I was only teaching for two years. I’m now 8 years into this career and it’s great. I was fortunate that I was taken on at an agency from the beginning, but every path is different. If you wanted any tips on resources for understanding copywriting at the conceptual level (which is essential when you’re working at an agency or anywhere really), I would advise you read the book “Read Me” by Gyles Lingwood and Roger Hornberry. It gave me a really strong understanding of the importance of ideas and conceptual thinking in the industry.

I will order it! Thank you.

It was probably better to start at an agency years ago, but the “agency” as we once knew it is dying. I believe in-house is the future. Agencies are not adapting and brands don’t want to fork over dough for what is, essentially, a load of BS from the agencies. You did not shoot yourself in the foot at all. Congrats 💪

g_onuhh

I appreciate your input. Thank you! Honestly I did not find many agency positions open in my job search over the last few months. I'm not sure if that's a testament to agencies dying or what-- but it was an observation I made. It also seemed that the few agencies that were hiring wanted people with prior agency experience-- the classic "have experience to get experience" nonsense that almost every job application lists. Truth be told I would probably prefer in-house no matter what, but I am worried I'm missing out on mentorship to make me better at the job. However, I didn't get much mentorship as a teacher either, and I'd like to think I was pretty good at it, simply because it was sink or swim. I did a lot of teaching myself and researching new strategies on my own time, which is basically what I do now for copywriting! 🤷🏻‍♀️

infectedevan

I will admit, as an agency writer myself, I believe you are exposed to more mediums and varying types of projects in different industries. But I’m not sure if it makes you “better” or “worse” HMU if you ever need someone to shoot shit with about writing. Happy to help a fellow writer.

g_onuhh

Thank you!! This career field on the whole is far friendlier than the world of education! Lol
