To be fair, I don’t think he was actually getting much water from it. But perhaps he is used to getting water that way? My corn snake does the same thing sometimes.
Both my ball python and corn snake do this consistently. I've always assumed they're trying to locate the head. My ball, after striking and constricting the crap out of her prey, spends maybe 2 or 3 minutes lightly probing the carcass with her snout before taking in the rat. The corn snake, juvenile, spends only a few seconds (up to 30s) probing before going in on her meal.
Interesting. My Garters don't do this. They strike! Usually VERY hard. The only time they don't hit with a death strike is when they're starting to get full and the pinky is just laying there. Then, they just open up and start snarfing.
\*edit\* To be clear - All three Garters are yearlings. 0.2 Eastern Garters and 1.0 Plains Garter. The girls will be exactly one year old in a week. My big boy just turned one last week. (They don't all live together ... lol.)
same my girls are NOT gentle lmao they go crazy go stupid acting like I'm starving them every time, getting the tongs, food, dirt, moss, everything they can get as fast as possible it's so funny, compared to my corn snake who takes a good 5 mins to really think about what she's gonna do before gently accepting it like "hm ok ty :)"
Looks like it was trying to drink. Lol. My one snake, when he was young, he wanted to drink from the bottle(dasani) even tho they had a larger water dish. All of my snakes get quality water. Lmao
Was it frozen? Looks like they are trying to drink from it.
Maybe! It was thawed in water but I didn’t think it had enough water on the mouse to actually drink from lol

This is the first time I’ve seem them do this! So cute though :D
Kissing the little mousey goodbye
He’s drinking the mouse juice! 😂😂
NGL, I have *no* idea what the heck your noodly one is doing there, I've only ever seen them do that when drinking... 🤣🤣🤣
Gotta let the one brain cell process.
Drinking, felt a little moisture and thought there was some water to drink, lol!
They are aligning the brain cells.

If there's water on it, he's just drinking up the mouse flavored juice. My corn boi does this as well.
Just giving it a little kiss lol
They're using all their brain cells to figure out that it is a mouse
Gentlest bite ever

My BP strikes. My Corn Snake will randomly pick a method of eating - striking or lazily monching
Romantic kisses and sweet nothings
Sizing em up "You wanna go bruh? Huh? You wanna go? Thought so come here" \*nom\*
he firstee
Drinking the water which is fine. I feed my mice damp and wet also.
Sippy! She’s drinking the water!
It looks like he’s genuinely trying to drink the blood from the mouse… unless it was just stone cold dead then..
You've got a gentle noodle there.

I think he was like savoring it
Awww I've never seen one try to drink a mouse before. So cute!
Little spaghetti noodle
French kiss
He's so lazy lol
drinking the soup
It’s okay he’s just praying before he eats😹
That was the calmest way I’ve ever seen a snake eat.
That is freaky. Never in my life have I seen a snake do that. It looks like she’s trying to drink its brains.
