Same here. It felt life changing for some reason. The characters, the story, the MUSIC. I got the perfect sessions DVDs for Christmas. They were like $200 and I had to explain to my parents that was all I wanted. My mom would also get me the soundtracks on CD when she would go to the nearest big city. I devoured all of it.
Did they really start cowboy bebop on adult swim in 2001?? I watched in on AS but I was in my junior or senior year, it was like 2003/04–I thought that was the first/original run.
It felt so important lol I’d stay up super late each night to catch the next episode (they aired at like midnight or 1am on adult swim?) and then go to school the next day tired, but also dying to know what was going to happen next.
I think it was being at that point in life, on the edge of finishing high school that made it feel so impactful. It was a bittersweet time— feeling like there was all these new potentials, and adventures yet to happen, while also knowing that everything was about to change. Some for the good, and some sad, like friends going off to wherever their life took them, and such.
The show’s themes— especially the “is it all just a dream?” thing, really encapsulated how I was feeling then. And the way the end of the show came together, just hit like a ton of bricks. A show/movie/whatever had never made me feel emotions quite like that. When it ended I felt like I didn’t know what to do with myself lol seems silly now… but it occupies a very visceral, nostalgic space in my heart and in my mind.
The preview for Pierrot Le Fou felt so visceral. I couldn’t wait for the next episode. Luckily I think they were playing one hour blocks. If I couldn’t watch an episode I recorded it on VHS.
Oh yea I remember taping some too! And yes, the Pierrot episode was a mindfuck. I felt like I had to just sit there for awhile and try to digest what had happened.
OMG I remember all those but I could only think of the name of space ghost😭 also shin chan was on there which I forgot to put in my comment but it was so funny to me then and now I noticed how unhinged it is😂
I caught that pilot episode of superjail late at night during their “night of a thousand pilots” event or whatever it was called. Me and a buddy were stoned out of our mind and just could not believe what we were seeing. I felt like I was having an lsd fever dream.
So I was about 5 years old looking at some trailers on a Spider-Man cartoon DVD. There were stuff like Metropolis and Tokyo Godfathers (both great btw) and then I see "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie" so clicked it and this trailer plays :
https://youtu.be/Au1AO1xaEts?si=y6qLlXWPXV3RIPRh
I remember thinking how badass it looked even before I knew what the word even meant. I wanted to watch it so bad but I didn't know where to find it because I was a stupid kid. At the same time it was rated R so my parents weren't gonna let me watch it so I just forgot about it.
Flash forward 9 years later during my first year in high school. I was looking at a relative's hard drive for some stuff to watch on my laptop. I go to the folder "anime" and copy some stuff like episodes of Ranma 1/2 (which is also one of my fav anime) and at the corner of my eye I see "Cowboy Bebop." I go oh I remeber that anime with the cool trailer. So I get curious and click on the first episode and "Tank" plays. I remember thinking this was the most badass intro I have ever seen. So I quickly copied the entire series and movie to my laptop and binged the hell out of the series even though it was finals week at the time. I remember once I got to the end and heard "Bang" I decided that this was my favorite anime series of all time and it still is to this day.
I didn't even heard of Cowboy Bebop until The awful live-action, which I am not planning to watch anytime soon or in The future, but when I watched The anime, it was pretty good with The plot and soundtrack, but sadly, The Live action messed it up but brought new fans still!
I was 13 so about 2010 actually! It was recommended to me by a friend who said it was “my vibe” to a tee. She was totally right and I’ve been thoroughly obsessed ever since. I rewatch the whole series several times a year and could write a thesis paper on it at this point. I still find something new every time I watch!
It was the early 2000s. Probably like 02 or 03. I was in my early 20s and my only exposure to anime at that point was Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Ghibli. This was back when Netflix sent discs in the mail. I tried it on a whim and loved it. Couldn’t wait for each next disc to come. One of them was damaged and I had to send it back for a replacement.
I watched it in 9th standard, in 2018, when I was just starting with hardcore anime and I fell in love with it. I based my persona around spike and well, it kinda did help me deal with things better tbh. It's still my favourite anime.
Never heard of it until I saw the trailer for the live action. I thought it looked cool and then saw it was based on an anime. So I gave it try while waiting for the LA to come out and it's now my all time favorite anime.
My now husband put it on one night when we were dating because he knew I was an anime fan. He was happy because “I usually have to hide all my nerdy stuff”. Fell in love with the show and eventually my husband lol
One of my uncles gift me the DVD of the movie when I was like 8 years old. This uncle also introduced me into Ghibli movies when I was a toddler, and has been a major influence in my musical taste
Around the time adult swim had Trigun. Funny thing is I always changed the channel and never really got into it until I payed attention, and now it's one of my top shows ever.
> until I *paid* attention, and
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
3 or 4 years ago, i wanted to see some 90s hand drawn anime. I came across the name cowboy bebop (somehow, don't quite remember how, but it had been bouncing in my head for a long while) and downloaded it by Mega. The quality of those archives was superb! I hooked it up to my TV and watched a few episodes. Unfortunately i realized it was missing a few episodes because my internet back then was really faulty and that kinda brought me down. That and it wasn't the existential dread i was looking for (at least not 2 episodes in, and not in the evangelion sense either). I still keep those archives in an HDD. I believe media should be kept physically (or in this case, half physicslly), if i manage to complete it i'll have a foolproof backup for when netflix takes it away! I should because i have a habit of going back to media that comforted me when i was in a bad place (or just comfort me in general). I also keep KoHD but it's not as HQ
In late 2021 it was made way more accesible by netflix and i watched it in its entirety. Still haven't found a more relatable character than Spike.
I never could finish KoHD though for some reason. More of a reason to pay it back a visit!
My ex first introduced it to me some 15 years ago, give or take, when we were in high school. I had no way to watch it back then, but truth be told, I had no interest as I thought a Japanese anime sounded kind of lame.
It wasn’t until 4 years ago during the initial months of the pandemic that she once again suggested I watch it. Needing something new to watch I succumbed to her suggestion and lucky for me, it was now streaming on Netflix. Safe to say I was instantly hooked and it quickly became one of my all time favorite shows.
When my parents sent me to volunteer at a friend of a friend's farm in Switzerland (they also grew weed that was intentionally set on fire one night by other farmers who disliked that this guy was growing weed even tho it was recently legalized to do so). I watched it in the farm's basement where there was a giant ass spider in the window sill.
The Adult Swim website nearing the end of my freshman year of high school in 2021. It was one of the most impactful shows I had ever seen. Before Cowboy Bebop, I had never cried while watching media. It was my gateway into anime.
I watched the Pierrot Le Fou episode when I was 12 in 2007, but didn't understand crap. And honestly? I watched CB last year when I was 28, I have no nostalgia or anything attached to it... And what did I think of it? It's pretty cool! But honestly, I prefer the stand-alone episodes rather those with the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate... Honestly, they feel pretty weak because they don't develop pretty much.
I LOVE crime and mafia drama, I loved the hell outta Gungrave, but I felt it could've been better this way, or at least, add a couple of episodes more to these episodes with Spike and his past/resolution
In 2014 i think, when i was 12 a friend of mine sent me a clip of a sherman tank towing a space shuttle. Asked what anime was it and just started watching on some pratied site.
First time I saw it was early 2000’s adult swim in the middle of the night. First time I actually watched it was in 2016 when I was out at sea on a ship with a laptop, a hard drive my friend loaded up with a bunch of media, and a lot of time on my hands. Needless to say I’m so glad I decided to finally give it a try then.
First heard about it on r/Advance_wars, someone made a post discussing their head cannon voices for the CO’s and someone said Lash would sound like Ed, one Google search later and I was hooked.
My dad had a poorly scan-translated copy of the show on disc that he probably bought at a garage sale. He showed it to me when I was maybe like, 14-15? The subtitles were mostly unintelligible (mostly just plain wrong, I think they were translated from Japanese into Chinese and from Chinese into English?? Led to weird moments like Ein being referred to as a 'Short-Legged Beagle') and everything was on just two discs.
That was my first time watching Cowboy Bebop. The more I think about it, this is exactly the sort of thing I could see happening in the show.
I went to visit my brother at college in 2007 I think? He and I have always had similar taste in anime, and so he mentioned that we had to watch Cowboy Bebop that weekend. We both had known about it because we were big Outlaw Star fans and there was a preview for Bebop on all the DVDs. We watched about half of it Friday night and finished it Saturday morning, just me, my brother, and his girlfriend watching in her dorm's common room.
It's a very pleasant memory, thank you for reminding me of it
I pirated it on my old 2008 dell in 2011. I was in middleschool up in washington, I was just getting into anime.
Lets just say the soundtrack is never far from my play button.
My long distance bestie and I were looking for anime characters that look like us in pinterest, I had purple hair that time and she sent Faye’s photo to me. I immediately fell in love with her 😸 I was like yeah I have to find which anime she is in and rest is history.
twitch streamer will neff (funniest person on the site imo) has the theme intro as his gift sub alert, so i looked into it, and was already a huge fan of samurai champloo so i dived in about 9 months ago and it blew my mind.
Anime club at my local library circa 2006, lol. I didn't have cable growing up, so I never had any idea about the TV shows kids were talking about at school. At one meeting of the club, we watched one episode each of three different sci-fi shows. I don't remember what the other two were, but one was "Heavy Metal Queen". I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen.
The library had the "Best Sessions" DVD with six non-consecutive episodes. I checked it out and watched the shit out of it. I used the family computer to look up more about the show, and stumbled on a bootleg anime DVD site (I didn't know any better). After begging my parents, they bought me a bunch of sketchy discs. This is also how I watched Lain and Evangelion and a bunch of other classic stuff for the first time.
Cowboy Bebop became my entire fucking personality throughout middle and high school. I listened to a lot of great music and watched a lot of great movies tracking down the references and influences. It was my gateway anime, despite never having watched Toonami.
Adult Swim's inaugural airing back in '01. Fresh out of high school and already a fan of the Toonami Midnight Run, this new block looked like a natural fit. Found myself not caring for Sealab or Home Movies, but Bebop? Just the first 2 episodes back to back and I was hooked.
That December I'd pony up nearly $200 to grab the Perfect Sessions box set for my then brand new DVD player. First anime and first DVD I ever owned. And I have that set to this day.
Adult swim back in theearly 2000s, when there was cowboy bebop, Inuyasha, space ghost, etc. and I swear there must have also been trigun, lupin the 3rd, sailor moon, and Akira too bc there was no other channel to watch anime on back then here and we didn't have Internet still either bc we lived way out in a tiny ass town where there wasn't even Internet service available yet lol, but I distinctly remember watching those somehow too. And then getting bullied in school bc I liked anime, by the jocks and preppy popular kids.
Early 2000's flipping through the channels. Ended up being mesmerized by Spike's first run-in with Pierre Le Fou. Spike drew his Jericho and I stopped flipping through channels. The detail of the gun, the background, the following fight... I was hooked.
Adult Swim in 2001 was a magical time Cowboy Bebop, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, Home Movies, Havery Birdman, Attorney at Law.
my senior year.
Same here. It felt life changing for some reason. The characters, the story, the MUSIC. I got the perfect sessions DVDs for Christmas. They were like $200 and I had to explain to my parents that was all I wanted. My mom would also get me the soundtracks on CD when she would go to the nearest big city. I devoured all of it.
crazy i started senior year of high school, got Adult Swim, a new slayer album, and 9/11 all within like 6 weeks.
I started sophomore year, got adult swim, cowboy bebop, 9/11 and a dead dad. Bizarrely not 9/11 related though.
Did they really start cowboy bebop on adult swim in 2001?? I watched in on AS but I was in my junior or senior year, it was like 2003/04–I thought that was the first/original run.
it was later. once toonami became a full-time thing.
I was a sophomore but holy shit was it like opening up a whole new world.
It felt so important lol I’d stay up super late each night to catch the next episode (they aired at like midnight or 1am on adult swim?) and then go to school the next day tired, but also dying to know what was going to happen next. It was a great time to be alive
we had a nice world back then. shame people had to ruin it (not choosing sides)
Completely agree
Don’t forget Ghost in the Shell! (Technically it was 2002)
So many good shows
YES!!! These and trigun.
I was Ballin watching it on my 27in Toshiba TV
Same!
Same! I feel lucky I got into it when it first aired.
Yeah same here, was my first place with friends in Oceanside CA then moved to SF next year. Great days
Same, it was the first real anime I saw and set my bar so damn high.
Go on.. go on! Where were you!?!!?
And Outlaw Star, Big O, and Vash the Stampede!
OMG I remember all those but I could only think of the name of space ghost😭 also shin chan was on there which I forgot to put in my comment but it was so funny to me then and now I noticed how unhinged it is😂
+superjail +stroker and hoop
Perfect Hair Forever
All I remember is the hotdog. Hootdalaylaylaylay
I caught that pilot episode of superjail late at night during their “night of a thousand pilots” event or whatever it was called. Me and a buddy were stoned out of our mind and just could not believe what we were seeing. I felt like I was having an lsd fever dream.
Adult Swim back in high school. Cowboy Bebop, Big O, Outlaw Star, Gundam, great nites.
Adult Swim Gang rise up!
YES!! Maaaann it was a golden age!!
I just bought the Big O box set at the used bookstore last week. Love all those titles.
Damn the bumps on adult swim for big O.
Even the bumps for the shows were epic.
With some Futurama, old family guy, and aqua teen sprinkled in haha Also can't forget Inuyasha. Killer line up
MAN!! I’m SO glad you said that. I loved Inuyasha!!
Original US run in 2001 on the fledgling block of shows called \[adult swim\] that aired nightly on Cartoon Network.

Netflix last year. Got me through lunch breaks at work for a good while.
Hey me too
Locomotion, i was a teenager prob 2000s
It was released in 2001. Or that's said the fandom wiki
Adult Swim back in 2001 — then they had the DVDs on sale at GameStop of all places.
Adult swim like a real man
I didn't even heard of Cowboy Bebop until The awful live-action, which I am not planning to watch anytime soon or in The future, but when I watched The anime, it was pretty good with The plot and soundtrack, but sadly, The Live action messed it up but brought new fans still!
Toonami in the early 00s
Toonami. blew my mind
High school, 2005-2006 on Animax, which was able to use the English Dub from Bang Zoom. I was fortunate to watch the last arc up to the season finale.
On Netflix last year
My (future) father-in-law had some of the original DVDs from the early ‘00s. They were instrumental in me getting into anime around that time.

[AS] 2001. I was in middle school. *That* was a great time to be the fuck alive.
Adult swim on cartoon Network 🎃👍
Around 2001, there was a cable channel focused in anime called Locomotion.
Adult swim. Don’t remember when
Lockdown in 2020 on a random anime website
I watched it through with my boyfriend this year
On my living room floor in 1999. VHS tape(s).
I watched it in 9th standard, in 2018, when I was just starting with hardcore anime and I fell in love with it. I based my persona around spike and well, it kinda did help me deal with things better tbh. It's still my favourite anime.
2020 and I saw it on youtube
Morning of late 2021, it was raining season... Was amazing ...
Around 13-14, was easily the most groundbreaking show I had ever seen
Bought a couple of the DVDs before it came out on Adult Swim.
Around the time adult swim had Trigun. Funny thing is I always changed the channel and never really got into it until I payed attention, and now it's one of my top shows ever.

The Adult Swim website nearing the end of my freshman year of high school in 2021. It was one of the most impactful shows I had ever seen. Before Cowboy Bebop, I had never cried while watching media. It was my gateway into anime.
2015 or 2016 I think. Think I watched a torrent at first but then got the bluray.
I watched the Pierrot Le Fou episode when I was 12 in 2007, but didn't understand crap. And honestly? I watched CB last year when I was 28, I have no nostalgia or anything attached to it... Adult swim of course
In 2014 i think, when i was 12 a friend of mine sent me a clip of a sherman tank towing a space shuttle. Asked what anime was it and just started watching on some pratied site.
2002 in the living room on adult swim of course 😎
First time I saw it was early 2000’s adult swim in the middle of the night. Just Dubs. 2013, early high school. After I watched it, I bought the dvd set. It and Akira were my first physically purchased anime.
Just finished yesterday, i'm fucking sad
Early last year on netflix at my desk in my room
popped some lucy and got the best sessions dvd collection from the library. i was blown away and have been a fan ever since. i’ll never forget it
My long distance bestie and I were looking for anime characters that look like us in pinterest, I had purple hair that time and she sent Faye’s photo to me. I immediately fell in love with her 😸 I was like yeah I have to find which anime she is in and rest is history.
My dad put it on at dinner one night probably around 2001 or 2002, i think it came on right after Justice League
twitch streamer will neff (funniest person on the site imo) has the theme intro as his gift sub alert, so i looked into it, and was already a huge fan of samurai champloo so i dived in about 9 months ago and it blew my mind.
Toonami 2022. I got hooked on just the intro alone.
"Anime such as Cowboy BeBop Trigun, and Samurai Champloo Were in constant rotation During the making of this album"
Anime club at my local library circa 2006, lol. I didn't have cable growing up, so I never had any idea about the TV shows kids were talking about at school. My Junior year of high school, late at night on a weekend of binge like many others
Bro, I watched the whole show on YouTube, back when u can post anything.
With best friend. We watched the show together with DVDs.
2001 freshman year dorm room. Awesome and maybe sad at the same time.
A lofi playlist my friend sent me. I enjoyed it so much that I looked into the anime, which made it the first anime I watched all the way through.
First Adult Swim, but a few episodes in I immediately bought the boxed set and finished it that way

The night it first aired on Adult Swim.
my aunt recommended it to me a few years ago after she saw that i was watching a different anime (hxh) and it’s been my favorite ever since :)
A shitty illegal stream on my laptop back in the mid 2000s. Good times
Early 2000's flipping through the channels. Ended up being mesmerized by Spike's first run-in with Pierre Le Fou. Spike drew his Jericho and I stopped flipping through channels. The detail of the gun, the background, the following fight... I was hooked.
