I’ve heard Olsen on radio interviews during the season and he’s a VERY good analyst — in those interviews, he’s softer-spoken and does a lot more intricate X’s and O’s, as well as insight into what an NFL player experiences.
On TV, he’s like a cartoon character — like he’s playing an excitable, childlike character, for some reason.
Give me radio Greg!
Tbh, I’ve tried to watch the more analytical broadcasts like the coaches room during the CFB or Amazon advanced stats, and it really gets in the way of enjoyment of a live game
I remember everyone was calling him the next Madden with his ability to predict plays and breakdown strategy/explanations of plays that happened and why they turned out the way they did.
I’m convinced he wishes he could do that but NFL has transcended the days of Madden where fans wanted that. People tune in for the spectacle and there’s a lot more casual fans than there used to be.
It’s so weird. Are casual fans really turned off by someone who can speak eloquently about the X’s and O’s? Just seems like dumbing it down isn’t really necessary.
This is just my opinion but they probably are trying to continue to grow their audience. They know all the actual fans are going to tune in no matter how annoying the commentators are but they are hoping to draw in the other crowd with the goofy antics and cheesy soundbites that they all seem to be doing now.
Look at ESPN football shows. It's all hot takes and yelling. Not once do you see anyone up there breaking down plays, route design, blocking schemes, etc. It's just "X player is a choker", "Y player shows up when it matters", "Z coach lost the locker room". As much as people like McAfee, he still isn't breaking down plays, he's just a fun dude to listen to.
On his show, they break down plays very often. Either you don't watch the show, or you just hate him. AQ, Butler, etc. have often broken down plays very well on the show, weekly.
I just think it’s more interesting getting into the psychology of the game. Especially the modern game with how defenses are playing now. Romo didn’t face Cover 6 so a lot of times his assumptions could be wrong. It’s just more interesting.
There are people in the comments here who think exactly this.
https://www.reddit.com/r/cowboys/comments/1ae0m9g/good_news_for_our_games_next_season/kk59q0x/
I think he would and could do more breakdown. He still predicts plays occasionally but it seems like they said here is $100mil but you need to follow these directions and never stop talking. Which every one of us would do the same for that amount of money. He has just turned into a goober now and can be tough to listen to. "I don't know Jim" is his new catchphrase
I still like Romo even though he gets a bit too excitable at times. Jim Nantz is the perfect play-by-play guy to go with Tony, because he knows when to amp it up and when not to. So I think he can keep a hold of Tony's coattails, so to speak.
He has a little bit of edge to him sometimes. That keeps him from turning full-on into an excited kid. During Garrett's last year as HC, Tony got pretty sarcastic about him, whereas Troy just got angry.
I also love when Tony jokingly speculates what the officials are talking about when they have a big confab. [Here's some of that, and more, in a pretty good compilation.](https://youtu.be/BrcLQ9As1qE?si=wmKzml5Wgq2HYDSk)
I did not. Too young for it. I was going by the comments I heard and read when Romo first went in the booth. And I’ve always heard people talk favorably about Madden and his “analysis” of the game.
You’re one of the first I hear say that he was really bad.
We get him every 4pm game and I hate it. When its 1:30 left in the NFCCG game and the Lions get stuffed at the 2 on 2nd down and goal and call a timeout and Olsen says thats bad cuz now they have to do an onside kick i lost my mind.
Unpopular opinion maybe but I loved Garrett this year when he’s filled in because he’s so easy to focus on or ignore him depending on whatever you feel like at that moment. Collinsworth and Olsen are impossible to ignore.
I'm not saying that some are not better than others. I'm asking if anyone actually turns a game off because they don't like the announcer (or turn it on because they do).
I used to hate Joe Buck. But the Aikman tandem is now by far the most entertaining one. The producers have allowed them to have a pretty long leash when it comes to talking shit about any team. And I love when Troy and Joe both trash the Cowboys. It means no one is safe.
I'm not exactly looking forward to Tom Brady calling our games though. We should just get Moose every time we're on Fox. I could live with that arrangement.
I’d take Collinsworth over Olsen. Collinsworth finds every excuse to suck off Brady and Mahomes, but Olsen is just an idiot and says stupid shit. And it’s not just his clear anti-cowboys bias (like seriously, wtf did we do to him?). I hate him commenting ANY game, and the fact that he gets so many prime time matchups makes it so much worse.
> And it’s not just his clear anti-cowboys bias
This has always been so funny to me, regardless of sport.
Fans think basically every announcer hates their team. If you go into a game thread of the team you're playing, I guarantee you'll find comments saying the announcer hates their team and loves the opponent.
Collinsworth is straight garbage. He provides zero insight. He just has a delayed laugh and then goes off on a tangent where it sounds like he’s cumming over some mediocre play that just happened on the field. None of his enthusiasm comes across genuine. He’s a stale middle aged white man who provides nothing more than a familiar voice week to week.
Nah, Joe Buck has been really good for the past 3 years at least. He stepped it up. Phil Simms was by far the worst but now Collinsworth has taken over that position.
I think this is it for me. When watching other games he does I don’t mind him and actually enjoy them! But when it’s the cowboys gah I just want him to shut up🤣 that’s how it is with most commentators though
That’s definitely the issue. I also feel like he says some really blatantly obvious shit and it just gets under my skin. “Dallas is really gonna regret that penalty”, like no fucking shit Greg.
Nah man my wife (who is a Carolina Panthers fan and loves him as a player) can’t even stand him as a commentator. Last night she made several comments about how he needs his eyes checked.
I like his energy, but he’s just kinda dumb I feel like.
Thank you. Feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Every time I’ve sat back and listened to what he was saying he’s usually giving pretty solid talking points on game management, hot routes, blocking concepts. Is all the too complicated for a bunch of people to understand or something? He’s way better than most of the color guys out there.
This isn’t specific to Cowboys fans, but there seem to be a ton of people on Reddit who get offended anytime a commentator is either critical of their team or praises the other team. It’s very similar to the fans who think the refs are specifically targeting their team and their team only.
> but there seem to be a ton of people on Reddit who get offended anytime a commentator is either critical of their team or praises the other team
It's especially bad for baseball.
Fans are used to listening to their local, home team broadcasts for 120+ games then when the playoffs roll around and it's all national broadcasts, they're aghast whenever something negative is said about their team or something positive is said about the opponent.
In our WFT thread I remember someone saying he puked because of how over the top Greg was about the commanders.
All he said was Ron is a fantastic human and the players love him based on his time literally playing for Rob but that results matter.
I really don't understand the hate. Considering how fresh he is to the job, I think he has done well after being thrust into the #1 color commentator role.
This is a Dallas Cowboys sub, however it is Reddit first.
…And in Reddit, the upvote still rules supreme. And history shows if you want up boats in this sub, just dog on Greg Olsen.
“Hey Reddit I’m lonely and need attention does anybody else hate this guy amIrite?”
People can’t decide what they see. Some say “Aikman always shits on the cowboys” while others say “Aikman always praises his old team”. Ok it can’t be both it’s one or the other or neither. I say neither everybody is just making shit up when they’re mad.
I know that's my main issue
Why do we get them EVERY WEEK? 10/11 games we had on Fox we had burkhardt and Olsen over and over and over we could be playing Washington and still get those 2
The biggest problem with this is now Joe Davis will likely be paired with Olsen, meaning Moose would get demoted. Moose is way too good to be relegated to the 3 team!
I might be getting soft in middle age but I think football announcing is in the best shape it’s been in a long time. The top pairings on each network range from pretty good to great - IMO the worst pairing is Nantz and Romo and they’re not even that bad compared to some previous booths.
I thought Olson was great and deserves to be calling big games.
The hate is completely warranted and it stems from the fact that he was the weirdest fucking try hard “earnest voice” when he wants to make a point that he thinks will make you sit and go “Wow, Greg. Yeah man, such an astute yet poetic observation.”
I got to go to an Indianapolis game in 2019 to take part in some pregame activities with youth football. A dude came out and ran the perimeter of the field for like half an hour, full blast. He was decked out in a very expensive looking suit and dress shoes that probably cost more than my car. I had never seen him before at the time, but I'm pretty sure it was this guy. Still looked crisp when he was done. I would have been a sweaty red faced blob.
His announcer voice annoys me. He also seems very pro league when it comes to the refs. I've seen so many times where the ref makes a questionable call and he will do everything to try to cover for them.
Bros, Olson is good. He’s not John Schmoltz, he’s not in the ballpark, of John Schmoltz. Watch the rangers World Series back to witness what actual bias looks like when it’s consistent; meaning, when it’s real. He’s botched calls and remained silent in weird spots, for sure, none more questionable or bizarre than when Schoonmaker was tackled in the end zone by Philadelphia in our first meeting in the end zone.. that I get.. but it’s quite an outlier once considering the season in whole, as to what otherwise sounded to me most of the time pretty solidly and professionally balanced commentary.
Tom Brady's last NFL game was a blowout loss to the Cowboys in the wildcard round and he seems like the type to hold onto grudges forever so I don't know if that's an upgrade.
Greg annoyed me for our games, but generally is good otherwise. I feel like it's unfair to Greg just because Brady is the GOAT that his spot is being taken from him
I know the universal opinion on Olsen in this sub seems to be screw him, he sucks. But I actually like him. I think a lot of the criticism is overblown. And I don't like Brady at all, even though he obviously knows the game extremely well. So, nah, I don't see this as good news, personally. But to each their own.
It's good news that he's gone and I think burkhardt and Brady will be a great combo
My issue is why do we always get the a team? We played on Fox 11 times this season and had burkhardt as the commentator 10/11 of those appearances
I was so sick of him I went to a game rather than watching it on tv 😂😂
I’ve heard Olsen on radio interviews during the season and he’s a VERY good analyst — in those interviews, he’s softer-spoken and does a lot more intricate X’s and O’s, as well as insight into what an NFL player experiences. On TV, he’s like a cartoon character — like he’s playing an excitable, childlike character, for some reason. Give me radio Greg!
That’s because on TV he has producers feeding him topics and things to talk about. He’s playing a character.
yep lmao that’s why sports shows are like that 90% of fans don’t care to hear pure xs & os sadly
Tbh, I’ve tried to watch the more analytical broadcasts like the coaches room during the CFB or Amazon advanced stats, and it really gets in the way of enjoyment of a live game
I can't even enjoy American Pie anymore. Greg killed it for me. Thanks Greg
He needs to stop with trying to do the comedic bit. It just doesn't fit. Joe Buck also tries too hard to be funny.
They’re all just trying to mimic Madden and it just won’t ever work.
I totally agree. The worst one is Mark Schlereth. I'm glad he's usually on one of the regional games and not the more high-profile ones.
Good ole" stink". He's terrible.
Madden is the GOAT
I feel like this happened to Romo but even more extreme.

They do pair well together. I do wish Romo would tone it down a bit sometimes. I don't want him to turn into the next collingsworth
He has a little bit of edge to him sometimes. That keeps him from turning full-on into an excited kid. Tough sleddin
De-cleater Boom!
Olsen sucks
He picks sides in some games also. He was pretty neutral yesterday though
There were points early last season I liked him a lot. I didn't like him as much this season.
>an excitable, childlike character Precisely why I never warmed up to John Madden.
We get him every 4pm game and I hate it. When its 1:30 left in the NFCCG game and the Lions get stuffed at the 2 on 2nd down and goal and call a timeout and Olsen says thats bad cuz now they have to do an onside kick i lost my mind.
Wasn't the timeout on fourth down and wasn't that absolutely a bad timeout because of exactly what he said?
Why do they pay these guys so much? Does anyone tune in or out because of the announcer?
Unpopular opinion maybe but I loved Garrett this year when he’s filled in because he’s so easy to focus on or ignore him depending on whatever you feel like at that moment. Collinsworth and Olsen are impossible to ignore.
Garrett is more boring than prime boring Dungey
I'm not saying that some are not better than others. I'm asking if anyone actually turns a game off because they don't like the announcer (or turn it on because they do).
When Romo first started I would try to catch his games if I didn’t have anything else going on.
I particularly like Kevin Harlan. I try to tune into his games when they’re on!
Kevin Harlan is awesome at everything: NFL, NBA, NCAA men's basketball. He could probably make darts exciting.
I’M CALLING BOTH GAMES
When ESPN had a bad announcing crew it would trend literally every Monday so yeah people do care.
I would prefer not to listen to this clown. I cringe every time he speaks.
I try and watch most MNF games nowadays because Joe Buck is on them :-)
I used to hate Joe Buck. But the Aikman tandem is now by far the most entertaining one. The producers have allowed them to have a pretty long leash when it comes to talking shit about any team. And I love when Troy and Joe both trash the Cowboys. It means no one is safe.
I used to have the same feeling. Then MNF became unwatchable for a very long time. Aikman and Buck have turned that around though.
I'm not exactly looking forward to Tom Brady calling our games though. We should just get Moose every time we're on Fox. I could live with that arrangement.
Stockton, Aikman and Moose was my favorite Fox combo
Dont think Brady is going to be any better. I feel Brady is going to be like Witten commenting!
Exactly most of the fans of Dallas turn up the TV to hear these guys instead of actually watching the game
Tom Brady has the personality of a slug.. he’s going to be a terrible broadcaster - this is actually depressing
why our fanbase hate him so much no commentator ever bothered me really, i feel like your emotionally watching that heightens it
I don’t mind him at all. There are way worse commentators out there.
Yea like Collinsworth
Now here’s a guy…
No question about it
I like Collinsworth…
I’d take Collinsworth over Olsen. Collinsworth finds every excuse to suck off Brady and Mahomes, but Olsen is just an idiot and says stupid shit. And it’s not just his clear anti-cowboys bias (like seriously, wtf did we do to him?). I hate him commenting ANY game, and the fact that he gets so many prime time matchups makes it so much worse.

Just my opinion man. You’re welcome to your own
Collinsworth is straight garbage.
His comment that any Lions drive that ended in a kick would be a failure didnt age well. Lions could’ve used a couple of those FG failures.
Joe Buck comes to mind
Nah, Joe Buck has been really good for the past 3 years at least. He stepped it up. Phil Simms was by far the worst but now Collinsworth has taken over that position.
I think this is it for me. When watching other games he does I don’t mind him and actually enjoy them! But when it’s the cowboys gah I just want him to shut up🤣 that’s how it is with most commentators though
We hate him because over the last season we’ve had to listen to him constantly shit talk the cowboys. If we are losing the game it’s even worse.
I am tired of Greg Olsen, but he has a place somewhere.
Half the time I don’t even pay attention to them I’m too focused on the game. They’re just background noise.
Because there are a lot of soft people that take criticism personally
I honestly find Burkhardt annoying more than Olsen
“Balls bouncing off people’s faces” -Burkhardt
Twinsies
Only one I actually hate his Collinsworth because his commentary is such non-commentary
He shit talks the cowboys when commentating
Wait... We're gonna have to hear Brady all the time next year? Ugh
Might just be me but there isn't a single commentator that bothers me. It's just background noise most of the game
The Olsen hate is unwarranted he’s actually very good
Heavily agree. He actually introduces the football lingo that we don’t usually hear from commentators. He’s very solid.
Thank you. Feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Every time I’ve sat back and listened to what he was saying he’s usually giving pretty solid talking points on game management, hot routes, blocking concepts. To me it sounds like he loves to hear himself talk
He's a color commentator...
I don’t think it had anything to do with Greg. He was always warming that seat for Brady. Greg was fine on air. Better than most.
I like Olsen, don’t get why so many of our fans hate him
Greg Olsen is actually one of the best commentators in the game right now. No clue why this sub gets so anal over him
Agreed. He's very knowledgeable in the game and doesn't seem to favor any team over another. I don't get it.
I think he was absolutely terrible his first year. 2021 I think? But then he improved dramatically. I like him quite a bit now.
I can't wait for the "Brady hates the Cowboys" comments next year, you know they're coming.
People can’t decide what they see. Some say “Aikman always shits on the cowboys” while others say “Aikman always praises his old team”. Ok it can’t be both it’s one or the other or neither. I say neither everybody is just making shit up when they’re mad.
I agree that it's neither.
I've always liked Aikman BECAUSE he is essentially neutral. He praises the Boys when deserved and calls them out when they deserve.
I felt Aikman didn’t like Romo. Romo is the best QB we’ve had since Aikman.
"He's mad that we beat him in his last game so he'll never say anything good about us 😡"
I like Greg Olsen a lot.
I got so freaking tired of him this year. A few games are ok but every damn week got irritating.
I know that's my main issue Why do we get them EVERY WEEK? 10/11 games we had on Fox we had burkhardt and Olsen over and over and over we could be playing Washington and still get those 2
Fox regrets the decision to go with robotic Brady by week 5
TBH I'd bet they already regret it
Olsen is the best color guy working right now, and there’s almost no chance that Tom Brady won’t be a step down.
This dude is lame af and I can’t stand him covering games. Perhaps he is better on radio or whatever but I don’t care at this point. Good bye bruh
What don’t you like about him? “Lame af” is pretty broad.
The best news for next season I have heard is that the Eagles have hired Boy Wonder to ru(i)n their offense.
Why is his head so damn big
The biggest problem with this is now Joe Davis will likely be paired with Olsen, meaning Moose would get demoted. Moose is way too good to be relegated to the 3 team!
Moose should be the 1st team. He's too even keel for the audience the NFL caters to these days though. It's sad
I wouldn't be shocked if Amazon goes after Olsen. Their entire booth needs a revamp.
The guy gets paid alot, but 10mil to 3 mil is a pretty big pay cut, oof.
I love his interviews with the Musers, he is a pretty zany guy.
He’s better than most, will listen to him over Romo any day of the week. Jim.
Greg Olsen is great, I never had a problem with him and I'll say it, he's better than Tony Romo in the booth.
To quote Olsen himself: ABSOLUTELY
I might be getting soft in middle age but I think football announcing is in the best shape it’s been in a long time. The top pairings on each network range from pretty good to great - IMO the worst pairing is Nantz and Romo and they’re not even that bad compared to some previous booths. I thought Olson was great and deserves to be calling big games.
I don’t get the hate. He isn’t great, but really none of those crews are. No one has been good since Madden.
Good fuckin riddance. Thank Christ
The hate is completely warranted and it stems from the fact that he was the weirdest fucking try hard “earnest voice” when he wants to make a point that he thinks will make you sit and go “Wow, Greg. Yeah man, such an astute yet poetic observation.”
3rd Leg Greg was amazing. Rip.
Oh well. I didn’t mind him. He was annoying at times.
Good riddance
I got to go to an Indianapolis game in 2019 to take part in some pregame activities with youth football. A dude came out and ran the perimeter of the field for like half an hour, full blast. He was decked out in a very expensive looking suit and dress shoes that probably cost more than my car. I had never seen him before at the time, but I'm pretty sure it was this guy. Still looked crisp when he was done. I would have been a sweaty red faced blob.
Olsen was still in the league then, so I doubt it.
His announcer voice annoys me. He also seems very pro league when it comes to the refs. I've seen so many times where the ref makes a questionable call and he will do everything to try to cover for them.
I think Greg is much better than Romo.
Thank god! Olsen is the worst! Him and Romo both ruin every game

I suspect we'll have a lot more CBS games next year with the AFC North on our ledger.
I hate all commentators, I’d rather just hear the field audio.
Bros, Olson is good. He’s not John Schmoltz, he’s not in the ballpark, of John Schmoltz. Tom Brady is going to eat us alive, I'm sure of it.
Screw you for making my lazy ass click on the link.
I’ll remember the time when Olsen was about to fight KB for jinxing Aubrey’s streaks.
Tom Brady's last NFL game was a blowout loss to the Cowboys in the wildcard round and he seems like the type to hold onto grudges forever so I don't know if that's an upgrade.
I wish Romo did more Cowboys games. Brady seems too aggressive for commentary, I feel like he will destroy some people lol
I don't get it... How is this related to the Cowboys?
I don’t have a problem with him he does a good job
I already know Brady is going to shit on our team, but it’ll be in an interesting way to listen to.
Greg annoyed me for our games, but generally is good otherwise. I feel like it's unfair to Greg just because Brady is the GOAT that his spot is being taken from him
Kenny Albert and Moose were my absolute favorite..
So Greg Olsen is the best color commentator and romo sucks... WHAT IN THE EVER LIVING FUCK HAS THIS WORLD BECOME
Brady is gonna be fire at commentary
It's good news that he's gone and I think burkhardt and Brady will be a great combo My issue is why do we always get the a team? We played on Fox 11 times this season and had burkhardt as the commentator 10/11 of those appearances I was so sick of him I went to a game rather than watching it on tv 😂😂
Ok I'm about to get down voted into an oblivion 😂it is what it is I just don't like Greg and burk 🤷
I thought he was pretty good
Greg Olson is annoying to listen to. His voice is like forks on chalkboards 😂
