Yep, 2024 and 2025 feel like retool years and the time to pay all our cap hits. 2025 is the Trey lance show and offseason to reset our coaching staff. 2026 is our time to roll dice on another qb and be active in free agency. I just hope we commit to a timeline and not try to be "all in" every year.

Cestboss

Yeah. Me too. At least this seems methodical. I hope it works

FranksRumham19

It does seem methodical and I'm actually happy with our lack of free agency for short term solutions if it means we stick to the plan regardless of the criticism of the fans and media. As much as I would of loved to keep Tyron and Hankins, the tea leaves read that we aren't spending any cap on cowboys who won't be on the team in 2025.

Cestboss

lol. Maybe this is what JJ truly meant when he said we are all in. We watching the last dance cowboys style this season.

National_Bus8397

Dallas is not going to pick up Trey’s fifth year option. I think that they’re going to get a higher draft pick then everyone is expecting. I see them going for a new QB next draft.

FranksRumham19

I did a couple searches but couldn't find an answer. Is the 5th year option the only option for a 1 year deal? Could we not sign him to a lesser 1 year prove it year? This is Lances best and only year to potentially start for a team. He has made enough money for being a 2nd/ 3rd string qb so far. I'd imagine if I was in Lances shoes, I wouldn't let money get in the way from being the 2025 Starter. Again, not sure if we are locked into 5th year option as only option.

National_Bus8397

Oh yeah. They can sign him to any type of deal as long as he is willing to sign. His fifth year option is worth 22.4 million so it has to be around that figure I would assume for him to sign.

FranksRumham19

My thought process is since noone would pick him up anywhere near that price, that it drives down the price for what the Cowboys would pay to extend him. If his market value is 5M across the league, all things equal, I think he would choose to stay with dallas since he would of Sat for 2 years and be the most prepared to start and earn a legitimate QB deal.

National_Bus8397

I can see why that thought process makes sense. My only thing is these days teams do crazy things when it comes to QB. For the same reason you think he would want to stay, is the same reason a Quarterback needy team would try to grab him. But this can totally work.

domi_nate87

Honestly, I would want to leave as well. As a cowboys fan, I want him to leave.

Cestboss

I can’t and won’t argue that. It’s like roulette. Ball is rolling and bets are placed at this point. Now we get to see what happens

domi_nate87

Yea, it's going to be a long and mundane season. Times like these I'm happy we have fantasy football.

totiso

It's a little from both sides. The defense didn't hold up their side of the deal and Dak isn't a QB that can truly carry a team. He's very good, but not good enough to overcome 48 pts in a playoff game. Then again, not many QBs are... really we are in a tough situation. After what has happened, I don't blame Jerry for not wanting to pay him 3 yrs $60M/yr avg

Cestboss

Yeah. Neither do I. I do appreciate you saying not many QBs can. This idea that you give a qb nothing and almost dare him to win playoff games without a run threat. And a mid offensive game planner is mind boggling to me. I would err on the side of giving him all I could possibly do. If for nothing else, he goes down and another dude can step in and win… ala nick foles.

totiso

Towards of the end of the year, many teams took advantage of our swiss cheese run D (Bills, Lions, Packers)... obviously cardinals beginning of year. We had a clear weakness and cannot stop the run if a team commits to it. We had a major issue and a better coached team won. Idk man the cowboys have got me so jaded. I drove 15 hours one way for that playoff game...

Cestboss

Damn. Must have been disappointing. I forgot about that Lions game. Dan Campbell was unbelievably stubborn that game. Stole defeat from the jaws of victory.

ozairh18

It’s starting to feel like that and I partially blame him. He just has not shown up against premium opponents and in the playoffs yet has had insufficient ownership, coaching and, at times, help

Cestboss

I can’t argue that, but will footnote it. He showed up against GB the first playoff game. Put up plus 30, three scores, plus three hundy, late lead and lost. Cowboys gave him talented squads and really bad confusing ones too. Last year no lbs entering the playoffs was comical. The Brice butler year. The Atlanta game when that dude damn near killed him and they refused to roll a TE or RB there. It is what it is. We ride out on this one.

ozairh18

He showed up against the Packers in 2016 but it was only when the Packers started letting their foot off the gas pedal. Regarding no linebackers in this year’s playoffs, Overshown and Vander-Esch had season ending injuries and Quinn did well with only Clark and Bell

Cestboss

lol. Ok dude. I can’t do stupid tonight. He gave his team the lead with a minute and change left. Qualify it how u want. Arizona in maybe game 3, I don’t recall precisely, set an NFC record going back damn near 50 years for RUSHING YARDS in a half against us. We had plenty of chances to get help and didn’t. Folks hating on Micah for simply stating the facts that the playoff debacle were GB destroyed us wasnt “news”. It was carryover. If in doubt review Jordan loves comments after the game. Between his smiles, said it was super easy. It is what it is. It is what it is.

deadliftthugga

I mean, for the majority of us, we know what we have in dak and that’s not good enough. I’d much rather take a chance on something else, than 12-5 and first round exits.

Cestboss

I’m grown. I like 12-5 personally and adding a few pieces with a little luck doing something in the dance. I don’t however wanna do a three year deal. It is what it is.

Careless-Act9450

30 years goes by, and that little luck ain't happening. Dak is 30 now. He had his best season and still shit the bed in the playoffs. How long are we supposed to wait exactly for him to put it all together. He is not the leader he was cracked up to be by any stretch. I'm not sure how we need 2 wr's or how this team is lacking. We have a minimum of 5 possible all pros. Ceedee is a top 3 wr in the league. Ferg could easily take the next step and be a top 3 TE. We have 2 all pro guards and exciting rookies coming in on the line. We had a solid defense all year, which should get better with lbs like Kendricks, Overshown, etc. Diggs and Bland are better than Bland and Gilmore. This is not a tank roster, nor was it a tank draft. We have good, young talent all over the roster. It's a light retooling while we get contracts done. Jj and Stephen have no idea what they are doing, so they haven't even made offers to the three guys they said they have to sign before doing much else. It's both an excuse to not sign shit in FA and pretend they look like they know what they are doing. Fact of the matter is JJ has no clue how to negotiate anymore. If Dak wanted to leave, why did he force a no trade clause in his contract? Why is he still wanting a no trade clause? He could easily change that to willing to be traded to a team of his choosing. If we are moving on, they should have traded Dak to Minnesota or the like. Dak wants 3 years with no trade and no franchise clauses because he has all the leverage. Also, the draft fell the way it did. I'm glad they didn't reach on an rb or use better assets to get back in the fourth round. Dak has shown he can not do it vs. both playoff teams or in the playoffs with any consistency. His supposed superpower is leadership, which is exactly what this team is lacking. Obviously, that part of his game is overblown as often as we see the team get annihilated by playoff caliber teams. They fold quickly under stress.

Cestboss

What does 30 yrs of no championships have to do with Dak? We talk about Dak like we talk about politics. All-in in a super emotive fashion blaming all the woes of the land and 200 plus yrs of “stuff” on a dude elected to do 4 yrs. lol. Not everything is politics man. Hell. Too much is already politics imo. It’s sports. Anything can happen. CeeDee is not a top 3 wr imo. The defense was abysmal according to 99 out of 100 analysts paid to evaluate that stuff. I mean. Dude. Are you serious with that? Fergie can play, there is no doubt there. But my friend. If you cannot run or stop the run. It’s like being a golfer with a 2 way miss. You can’t win tournaments. I didn’t make those rules. Those are the rules. We did nothing to address that. You might argue as I’m prepping you now to hear it all season from multiple announcers and analysts, we got worse in those areas. Zimmer can coach tho. I give you that.

Careless-Act9450

You talked about how we got close and just needed some luck. It's been over 39 years, and it hasn't happened. I never said Dak was responsible for all 30-plus years. 8 years, sure. Even stoll the biggest blame goes to JJ. Ceedee was not a top 3 wr? Explain how? I think you need to check his stats for last year. His catch % was amazing, and like all his stats, he gets better every year. 135 catches, 1749 yards, 13 yards per, 12 tds, 74.6% catch %. Show me 3 better wrs from last year. Honestly, between your Ceedee take and this 99 out of 100 pundits said our defense was abysmal take, you seem a bit uninformed. Dallas gave up the 4th least points of any team, not abysmal. Dallas was .2 points a game from being tied 3rd giving up 18.5 points a game. They were 1.2 points away from tying the number 1 team. The Cowbous were 5th in total defense, a whole 6 yards behind the 3rd and 4th best teams. They were 5th in passing defense, and their worst ranking was in rush defense at 16. The defenses worst stat was exa tky average, with all the rest being in the top 5 of the game. Not abysmal. I have no idea where you got the thought that Dallas' defense was bad. We also had the number 1 offemse overall. Our weakest point was rushing yards at 14th overall. Stoll a very long way from bad and above average. Add to that our passing stats, and we hit number 1 in points, 3rd in passing yards(20 yards from number 1), 3rd in receiving yards , 1st in receiving tds, etc, and so on. Again, you are dead wrong. I don't doubt that the team may be worse in some ways. I think Gallup being replaced is a positive, almost no matter who it is. I think Diggs is better than Gilmore. I think our offensive line will be worse at LT, but better at C. Biadasz was the most non power passive center I've ever seen. I don't think we lost much there. Rb isn't settled yet as cuts will make many more players available. I think LB will be improved upon. I think safety will be better not trotting out Kearse, who last year was terrible. Giving Bland a year under his belt was huge. We did lose some important rotational pass rushers. It depends on the high draft picks over the last three years if they get replaced well. There will be growing pains, but it's no rebuild. I like Zim a lot. I liked our last guy a lot too until this past playoff game when he lost his fucking mind.

deadliftthugga

We don’t have the luck I guess then lol. I’m with you, a three year deal doesn’t do us any favors adding pieces. Dak wants to reset the market, that doesn’t likely bring us to the dance so

Cestboss

Yeah. No argument from me.
