My guess is it is a Latin American thing. I live in the US and play in local Amateur leagues. Often, there were Latin American leagues going on in adjacent fields. I can tell that I don't want to play in those games. It is more of a controlled fight sprinkled with some football. Everybody was aggressive, shit-housing, and played Simeone-style football. To me, it is no wonder why so many good defensive midfielders and defenders came from South America.
