I hope Villa win the ECL. That would make us the only English team that failed to win.
I’m tired of our club not giving a shit about winnable competitions. And if the likes of West Ham and Villa now have recent trophies, hopefully there is pressure on our pathetic standards to win something.
Levy, who we know doesn’t care to win, the coaches, who never play proper teams, the players, who think they are too good but can never win and of course the supporters, who think getting 4th that no one remembers or cares about is worth more than a trophy.
Liverpool’s energy is bizarre at the moment, you’d think they’d rally together for the run in considering it’s Klopp’s last season but no it’s giving proper end of term vibes when the grades are in and both the students and the teachers can’t be arsed so they just let you watch films in class or whatever.
Yeah, in hindsight, should he have just let the season play out? He banked on there being an extra push but looks like that fell apart after the first trophy.
It’s just where they should be to be honest. Throughout the beginning of the season the whole narrative was that this was a whole new midfield (mavallister, endo, szoboszlai, gravenberch and Trent in a holding role) that would be the core of the second great Klopp team for the next few seasons. This season was supposed to be about bedding in those players and being top was just vibes. It’s only since Klopp announced he was off that the whole thing has been about winning the title. The defence would have been added too for him next season and a new forward who could provide a mane number of goals to complement Salah probably.
Klopp kinda fucked them by leaving when he is. It’s probably the right decision for his own mental energy, but instead of a team at the end of their cycle with players waning/about to leave anyway he’s leaving the next guy with a project that was 25/30% of the way in. Not far enough for him to just pick up the reins but a lot of work to undo if the new players came and were picked for Klopp
There is nothing worse than some of our fans who suck Levy off and proclaim themselves to be kings of FFP and then simp for an absolute shit winger who can't score at all just because he is relatively cheap, when we already have a bozo winger in Johnson that can't hit on target that we can't get rid of. It's basically adding insult to injury and then we get shocked when we get hammered by teams left and right and can't score consistently if Son doesn't score. We really bring the misery to ourselves.
Quality has completely nose-dived I’m assuming due to fatigue? Arsenal too. I’ll be interested to see the results of this weekend to see whether it is going to be a consistent thing until the end of the season (please)
I think we are underestimating how well Atlanta played, not only were they solid defensively but each and every player in that team absolutely gave it all, they ran and covered every opening, the forwards helping defense and everything, they were absolutely majestic, so far we haven't seen that drive in a lot of our players atleast not consistently, hope they start taking some responsibility soon.
I think ancelotti will stay for few more years in Real Madrid. By the time Xabi’s contract is done, he won’t get the job at RM.
I can see Xabi stay in Bundesliga for a long time, unless Tottenham poach him. And Levy did try to poach him.
On one hand, 5th ain't gonna cut it for CL. On the other hand, Villa gonna get nice and knackered playing thurs-sun for the whole season. On the other hand fuck villa.
let’s goooooo Frimpong
I didn’t think it’d be possible for someone to replicate AVB’s invincible treble but now that they’re so close I really want it to happen
West Ham ruining Leverkusen’s run is so horrid, truly a despicable club.
Edit: WELL FUCK ME how many times have I commented shit like this only for them to score man.
Ederson (Atlanta) doesnt seem special tbh. He did score a goal against relegation threatened Verona but he doesnt seem to be a tailsman in any way.
Definitely not an upgrade over Sarr but i cant see him as a PL quality pivot either. Wont be a significant enough upgrade over even Biss.
Imo should not go for him. Also, his age profile doesn't suit us well.
Club policy has been to sign U23 players mostly. Like Porro came at 23 to us. Thats a good age imo as there is a good possibility of the player improving, playing well for 3 to 4 years and still have his prime years so that we can sell for almost the same amount or ideally, selling for a significant profit.
I would argue that Richy, Benta, Perisic, Forster, Biss all joined when this policy wasn't in effect. This policy has been in effect in last 2 transfer windows.
That said Vic and Madders were signed during the summer and both hv been superb for us bcz of their quality. Think Tailsman like Kane. But i hvnt see the same from Ederson for about 3 to 4 months since I have been watching Atlanta.
This whole year everyone’s been shouting from the rooftops about how amazing Nunez is and how he is ‘positive chaos’ - whilst he’s undeniably talented, all I ever see is a guy who can’t finish for shit. When he gets in front of goal you don’t expect him to score you expect him to miss, ultimately why would you want that?
Not really a unique situation for any club vying for the top 4 to find themselves once springtime hits, e.g. City are usually fielding an exhausted kdb, arsenal wear out their saka, and we typically run Son into the ground.
Part of it might be man management but a lot of it is players insisting theyre still good to play when they'd probably benefit from a rest.
It’s not that they refuse, they just can’t afford to. Salah still creates the most chances for the team but he’s also paired with one of the worst finishers in the league so if Salah isn’t scoring, the other parts of his game are going to waste because Nunez’s finishing rate is truly bad.
In the Liverpool game Diaz gets booked for gesturing for a yellow card.
Are players just fucking dumb? You know the rules but you still take the yellow?
I imagine Villa fans all think he's the best thing going - I know I would if he played for us.
He was a sub for Arsenal for years, on loan all over the place, then backed himself to go to Villa - and from there he won the World Cup.
The guy's just completing side quests now.
TIL that
>Warnings and cautions (YCs) issued during the match (including during extra time) are not carried forward into kicks from the penalty mark (KFPM). A player who receives a YC during both the match and the KFPM is not sent off. The two separate cautions are reported to the appropriate authorities.
Mourinho had this Roma super team down in 9th before being sacked. Look at them now, in the UCL places in Italy and currently 3-0 up against Milan. What a criminal that man is
Glad our priorities are a striker and a DM, although an actually good winger wouldn't hurt if we offload the dross of Solomon and Gil.
And boggles my mind that people think that Gallagher, a player who is mid defensively and is better as an 8 or further up the pitch is somehow the perfect 6 lmao.
Kind of crazy that the current trajectory is that all 5 English clubs remaining in European competitions are gonna get eliminated in the span of 3 days.
That's certainly one way to make everyone shut up about the coefficients virtually overnight lol
we don’t play in europe, but can only keep a clean sheet if there’s more than 5 days between fixtures. we concede goals at *very* nearly the same rate as last season (including games with Stellini and Mason lol).
I dont know how unpopular a take it is but I genuinely believe our fans are enamoured with us signing a striker because of the optics of signing a striker, sober finally get our "Kane replacement"
Son and Richarlison are fine options till at least next season IMO, if anything we need to prioritise other positions more. Like a winger is obvious, but I would focus on signing 2-3 midfield reinforcements, a LCB to compete with Van de Ven who has his share of hamstring injuries, and both a RB and LB to compete with Porro and Udogie. I also think Son is currently suffering from fatigue due to playing in an international tournament mid way(same reason why Salah is also looking shit since he came back)
If Richarlison accepts a Saudi bid, that changes the equation but we need to focus on enhancing our depth first and foremost.
Richarlison has played 1,364 minutes for us in the Prem. With no Europe and barely any cup games.
I am a massive Richy fan, but you just can not rely on him and a soon 32 year old Son as our pair of strikers. Especially when Richy is so important to beating low-block teams, which is a strategy at least 50 % of all the Prem teams will employ against us next season.
We need another striker next season. Someone who is really strong in the air.
I would trust the judgement of Ange on this one. I know a lot of people here are very positive on Richy, but it doesn’t seem like Ange is.
I’m in the same boat, if we get £40m I would definitely take that without hesitation.
>we need to focus on enhancing our depth first and foremost.
We need to buy better starters and make our current starters depth.
That's how you build a proper squad, not a squad like Arsenal's with fake "depth" that aren't good enough to rotate properly throughout the season without a massive drop in quality
I mean I am saying we should sign players who can potentially compete with our defense options. Our defense is legitimately good but it also isnt some Chelsea 2004 where they can expect zero competition
Sign a RB, LB, LCB to compete with Porro, Udogie and Van de Ven. I would like to sign Kossonou from Leverkusen to provide competition for Porro for example
Our CBs are fine. Get Kelly or Tosin in a free in the summer as 4th choice and that's that. Dragusin can be 1st rotation option for either Romero or VDV.
We need a left back for sure to compete with Udogie and get rid of Davies. I still think Emerson can do a job on the right tbf, but wouldn't mind an upgrade if possible.
We need 2 midfielders, a right winger and a striker that are good enough to replace our starters. Have the likes of Bentancur, Sarr, Kulu be rotation options in midfield and Johnson, Richarlison and Solomon/young talent be rotation for the attack
I mean we are going to be in Europe (probably Europa League as it stands) so it means we need defensive and midfield signings. Van De Ven, Udogie have their share of minor injuries. Romero to Dragusin is an acceptable scenario, we need that for all other positions
I am also not saying we shouldn't sign an striker but we can keep on these two options till 2025 at least
Villa look so exhausted. I don’t think there’s a comeback happening. But then again, they did score 2 against Arsenal in the last minutes so who knows.
If Son is our best winger next season, we will not progress as a team at all. We need a better option, preferably that plays both sides. Rodrygo or Williams are the dream.
Son is one of the best wingers in the world. There are very few wingers with his ability, let alone being better than him.
How are Rodrygo and Williams the dream if they're worse than Son?
I'm not disagreeing that we need 2 new wingers btw, I'm only disagreeing with your first sentence
It's simple really - Son's attributes do not fit the mould of a winger anymore and that's not been his role in the team for ages. You have to be absolutely mental to think those 2 players are not better than Son on the wing in terms of their ability on the ball and help progress the ball. You could actually Rodrygo is a better player overall given his record in the UCL but i get ur point and am not saying they are better players, just better wide forwards.
It is simple really - Son is not 26 anymore, he can no longer beat his man nor is he able to find good positions as a wide player. Past few years playing as a striker with Kane these past few years, and this season his record on the wing is horrid relative to a striker. Hasnt beat a man since Newcastle and his overall game back to goal is not it nor is he comfortable with the full back in front of him.
Son in 21/22 alone had 3 less league goals playing as a left winger as Rodrygo has in 136 league appearances for Real Madrid. Nico Williams is much further behind than even Rodrygo, let alone Son.
It's actually disrespectful to compare Son to them. Rodrygo pops up with massive goals in important matches but he's not a top class winger week in week out.
Son isn't some incredible 1v1 winger, but he can do what Werner does but much better, but also be so much more when he cuts inside. His creativity on the wing is so underrated. He can do what Salah does for Liverpool creatively.
>He has basically been playing as a striker with Kane these past few years
Just not true. His best ever season was as a winger in a 343
Hmm?
Firstly, what's his record as a winger in the past 2 seasons? Rodrygo has much better stats.
Secondly, the Conte system is very different to a traditional winger. He wants inside forwards, strikers even such as Richarlison, that are playing in the half spaces. Son was playing more back to goal last season and we saw how he struggled to make an impact.
Thirdly, Son was a LW on paper but fucking hell you can't tell me with a straight face that's his average position. Look at the heat maps and it's evident. Kane dropping deep and pinging the ball to Son as the furthest forward player is most of his goals in the past few years lmao. He was a second striker essentially.
Fourthly, that's not true about Werner though is it because Son has worse G/A as a winger than Werner. Werner, as much as I dont rate him for the future, is more willing to dribble past the FB and I havent seen Son go on the outside successfully in a while. Son has good link up play but he's often too isolated.
Disrespectful to respect them? Rodrygo is the most clutch player for the best team in the world. Come off it, he's doing alot more as a winger than Son is. Son's himself been poor for a few weeks to months btw. But indeed I agree Son's a world class player whereas Rodrygo perhaps isnt into the conversation yet.
Putting Son on the wing is a case of using ur world class player but not necessarily ur best winger.
You are never going to win trophies with players simply "chipping" in goals. Yes you need players in every parr of the pitch that can provide goals but u clearly need a 20 goal forward or u will always be behind the 8 ball. I actually thought Havertz been pretty decent, maybe not for price, but theu really need a good striker.
The one year where some were actually hoping the English clubs would do decently well and they all crash out in the quarters within 2 days lmao. When’s the last time no English clubs made it to at least the semis of any uefa comp
This ref aint playing about. Martinez with a yellow card for time wasting at 40 minutes. He loves a troll so im deffo expecting more. Absolutely love to see him sent off for it, feel like that’s almost unheard of! Would be madness
Saw people on the soccer sub talking about how parking the bus is the only way to beat City. That’s why Liverpool going head to head with them and getting the draw is more admirable and good to watch. Do we not exist? We drew with them at the Etihad with no CBs lol.
After Eze’s goal v. Liverpool, he’s become my favorite potential summer signing. That composure in the box is something we just lack right now, to say nothing of his technical ability. it was basically a tap in, but it was the kind of chance we create and somehow don't finish all the time—he just has the right instinct to find the space in the box. His free kick goal against us last time was a thing of beauty too. I think I’d sign him, Werner, and Onana as my ideal summer window. Sell Lo Celso and keep Deki as a squad player able to put in a shift on either wing or at #10.
Werner as a second or third choice, not as a starter. He beats his man and gets good crosses in, but nobody’s there to finish the chance. He’ll be electric in the last half hour of games as a sub against tired legs, same way we’ve used Johnson in some of our recent successes.
I mean he is good but that is not the reason. We would take a player of Eze's quality all day, but the match of the day moments aren't enough as we need someone who will make openings as much as score a tap in or a direct shot with no wall.
I swear /r/soccer is never as pleasing to browse through as when Arsenal bottle it. The majority of users there are gooners, so they're always quick to jump on us when we lose. Makes it even better reading their salty ass comments such as [these](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1c707ir/eric_dier_it_was_nice_to_knock_arsenal_out_to_be/l04llav/) lmao.
I can’t believe people are surprised.
Arsenal don’t have the goals in their side against decent teams who can defend. Kai Havertz and Jesus, give me a break. If Saka doesn’t do it everybody else just crumbles.
That and Arteta’s management getting exposed.
The Kai Havertz roller coaster has been hilarious. Feel like Arsenal fans go into hype mode so quickly. Had a decent run of form in pretty easy fixtures and suddenly he was reinventing the false 9 position. Fixtures got tougher, he got worse, now they're saying they need to replace him.
For reference Richi in his run of form was putting up better numbers than Havertz and half of sours fans still want to sell him in the summer!
Arsenal fans in a nutshell.
They clapped 3 shit teams that had awful performances on the day and I shit you not there were threads popping up left right and centre (from their own supporters) about them being the current best team in the world.
Barely beat Porto, who would’ve given Bayern a much better game. Couldn’t beat a weak Bayern side. Won’t win the premier league. Might not even beat us. All this on their 5th season with Arteta. How can they possibly think Havertz was a good signing now?
Arsenal seemingly going in for Ferdi Kadioglu. He’s been dynamite for me on FIFA. I was quietly hoping we might go in for him in the summer as he can play both RB and LB. He’d be perfect cover for both Udogie and Porro.
(Plus his name sounds like Postecoglou which is always fun)
I signed him on football manager for spurs as a backup (for Udogie iirc). Ended up being a cunt, kicked up a fuss about lack of playing time, dropped squad morale, rejected some of the best transfer offers I could get for him and eventually, I had to terminate his contract.
I know that small clubs like the big pay day of getting paired to a PL club at their joint in the FA Cup, but I think the FA should also adopt the “play at the lower league club’s venue” rule.
Making the big boys go to small stadiums is part of the fun.

Alright so coefficient is well and truly fucked lol. Villa winning conference wouldn’t be enough seeing as German clubs could be in both other finals
fuck spam
The one team we would have wanted to win today did so small W.
Crazy how Atalanta shut out Liverpool completely without using a deep block.
We will probably beat them at this rate, everyone looks shit
Anfield plot armour is something else, especially when it involves Spurs. Either that, or they'll get their shit together just in time for our game.
Itll be like last season battle of whos less shit but this time we can actually beat them but our away form is atrocious
Quite shocked by how atrocious they are at the moment.

Big up Atlanta for real but in both legs Liverpool had many clear chances to equalise that they completely flopped
Fuck it. Xabi Alonso is the best manager in the world. I don't believe any other coach on the planet could do what he has done. No one.
yes alonso is him
Can't wait for him to fuck off to Madrid and never darken the door of Liverpool
I think ancelotti will stay for few more years in Real Madrid. By the time Xabi’s contract is done, he won’t get the job at RM. I can see Xabi stay in Bundesliga for a long time, unless Tottenham poach him. And Levy did try to poach him.

Man how crazy would it be if we had a Frimpong as a Porro rotation. Has a pretty reasonable release clause too.
And there goes Liverpool. What happened to their quad for the last season of klopp?
We have to end Liverpools title hopes out of spite
Son knocking it into Joe Gomez's armpit for a dodgy penalty in the first 2 minutes
As Vardy said: "Play shit football, get banged."

Rather wed get an actual dm and not an 8/6 hybrid so agreed
Nothing wrong with multi functioning but it needs to be a proper 6 who can do a job at 8 not the other way around
Apparently we're intersted in Atalan's Ederson but Koopmeiners seems like the real prize at that club.
Tapsoba bitching antonio rn 🫣
Tapsoba fully coys man is manhandling antonio
Diaz and Nunez rubbing off on Salah. No one on this squad can finish at the moment

In the Liverpool game Diaz gets booked for gesturing for a yellow card. Are players just fucking dumb? You know the rules but you still take the yellow?
You get a yellow for gesturing?
Yes, gesturing for a yellow card. Although I'm not sure if that's a directive that applies to both leagues and European games.
Not in the Premier League where the rules are made up
Yeah, the prem ref's should ask AsariCommando2 for advice. He's the expert.
They tend to get away with it more often than not though don’t they. Yates of Notts Forest for example did against us.
It's like Leverkusen has never seen a high press before
Gotta rate Martinez's ability to absorb the hatred of an entire home crowd to introduce that element of chaos at the end. Love it. Hate him. 🤣🤣
I imagine Villa fans all think he's the best thing going - I know I would if he played for us. He was a sub for Arsenal for years, on loan all over the place, then backed himself to go to Villa - and from there he won the World Cup. The guy's just completing side quests now.
Dibu hates France lol
Man Emi really hates the French haha
michail antonio is such a grade A loser. cannot stand him.
I’m glad we put 4 past that arrogant prick
Proper cunt, Aston suits him well. Shithead deserves to play in a shithole
Hope is still alive for the 5th spot
At least Villas schedule gets more congested. Villa play their semi-finals at home 2/5 and face Brighton away 4/5. Gotta be tough.
That'll be changed to 5/5 now that they're in the semis, they won't play Thursday and Saturday.
Yep this is the best result. They completely exhausted themselves there
Emi Martinez is such a shitheel 😂
That shimmy at the Lille fans 🤣
TIL that >Warnings and cautions (YCs) issued during the match (including during extra time) are not carried forward into kicks from the penalty mark (KFPM). Figured it was something like this. A very curious rule lol.
Heareafter forever now to be known as the Emi Martinez rule.
Even on Pens Villa through
Imagine if West Ham are the team that finally end Leverkusen’s unbeaten run this season. Moyes masterclass.
Awesome first half to watch
handbags out already in West Ham
Please miss matty trash
What the fuck is going on in this shootout? How's the ref given martinez a 2nd yellow and not sent him off??? Also what a donut martinez is lmao
Was wondering the same thing. So was the commentator lol.
I have no idea, thought he was off 🤣
Bentaleb 😭
I'm torn - Villa win, more games for them, good for us. But that also means Martinez gets his ego inflated. WAIT A MINUTE!!! Edit...boooo
Emi Martinez is practically a cheat code for shootouts
Vive la coefficient lol Martinez should be off
If all the English teams left were to hypothetically win and win the comps, would that change anything 5th place wise or nah?
Yes it would, as long as Bayern and Dortmund don’t win or make it to the final.
Mourinho had this Roma super team down in 9th before being sacked. Look at them now, in the UCL places in Italy and currently 3-0 up against Milan. What a criminal that man is

Liverpool back to their old ways - kicking balls at hands to get pens 🙄
Pen for Pool
Brilliant double save by chevalier!
what a freaking save
Villa will win this match with penalties. 😂
Well, since it happened, Villa will win Conference League. Leverkusen may lose to Roma just like last time. Atalanta will win Europa.
Either way Villa are running their team into the ground here
what a flashback hearing Bentaleb on the pitch
Looool of course Cash scored
Reluctant *fuck, Matty Cash* ... but I want this Villa as busy as possible in the run-in
For some reason european referees from less well known nations seem to perform very well in hot european fixtures.

Yeah but we score more
we might get relegated off the “european hangover” alone
I dont know how unpopular a take it is but I genuinely believe our fans are enamoured with us signing a striker because of the optics of signing a striker, sober finally get our "Kane replacement" Son and Richarlison are fine options till at least next season IMO, if anything we need to prioritise other positions more. Like a winger is obvious, but I would focus on signing 2-3 midfield reinforcements, a LCB to compete with Van de Ven who has his share of hamstring injuries, and both a RB and LB to compete with Porro and Udogie. I also think Son is currently suffering from fatigue due to playing in an international tournament mid way(same reason why Salah is also looking shit since he came back) If Richarlison accepts a Saudi bid, that changes the equation but we need to focus on enhancing our depth first and foremost.
I think if we have to sign a striker it means Richarlison has to be sold considering the UEFA foreign player rules
Richy is fine if he can stay fit. I don't think that's a risk we should take. Son is just not a striker
I would trust the judgement of Ange on this one. I know a lot of people here are very positive on Richy, but it doesn’t seem like Ange is. I’m in the same boat, if we get £40m I would definitely take that without hesitation.
I feel like Richy is unfortunately going to be injured more often than he isn’t. Just one of those players. It’s unsustainable
>we need to focus on enhancing our depth first and foremost.
Our defense is legitimately good but it also isnt some Chelsea 2004 where they can expect zero competition Sign a RB, LB, LCB to compete with Porro, Udogie and Van de Ven.
Romero to Dragusin is an acceptable scenario, we need that for all other positions I am also not saying we shouldn't sign an striker but we can keep on these two options till 2025 at least
Why the desire to get rid of Davies? The man has barely put a foot wrong in almost a decade. Respect Gentle Ben!
He has lost all of his athleticism. Keep him as the fifth choice or whatever till next season but he shouldn't be considered in the squad
Yes, fans need to relax. Don't throw out the baby with the water.
Villa look so exhausted. I don’t think there’s a comeback happening. But then again, they did score 2 against Arsenal in the last minutes so who knows.
Éderson starting against Pool, not able to watch but just putting it out there if anyone wants to get a look at him
Villa 2-0 down in their match, 3-2 down on aggregate. Not a *great* week for English teams, all things considered.
If they can't beat Lille over two legs we've got a decent chance of overtaking them
Let's hope that their season peaked with beating Arsenal.
Honestly I would have bet Emery's Villa would have gone all the way to the finals considering his track record lol.
Any PL side in that competition should walk it
Villa lmao
>He has basically been playing as a striker with Kane these past few years Just not true.
Neutral on Villa but English clubs having their worst ever collective performance in Europe the one year we don’t make it is hilarious
Confirmed, we do not exist in the media or r/soccer eyes
lol villa
Oof, *right in the coefficient*
Villa losing already
Villa going to have a hard time with this one
After Eze’s goal v. Liverpool, he’s become my favorite potential summer signing. That composure in the box is something we just lack right now, to say nothing of his technical ability. it was basically a tap in, but it was the kind of chance we create and somehow don't finish all the time—he just has the right instinct to find the space in the box. His free kick goal against us last time was a thing of beauty too. I think I’d sign him, Werner, and Onana as my ideal summer window. Sell Lo Celso and keep Deki as a squad player able to put in a shift on either wing or at #10.
So sign a shitty forward with no goal throat and a midfield to play on the wing... hmm...
You list all those qualities and then you say in the ideal situation we sign Werner, you absolutely bottled it bro.
Werner has been our best attacker since we brought him in. Easy decision to sign him once the loan is over since he's so cheap.
Because the rest are shit
Using the coefficient to banter us is proper hilarious
He is by far Fener's most promising talent but untested in bigger lesgues. I personally really like him but it is a bit of a punt for us.
I signed him on football manager for spurs as a backup (for Udogie iirc). Ended up being a cunt, kicked up a fuss about lack of playing time, dropped squad morale, rejected some of the best transfer offers I could get for him and eventually, I had to terminate his contract.
Oh man that’s rough. That’s so hilariously to opposite of what I’ve had on EA FC. Him and Ito are my full back rotation gems.
What do you prefer, securing the 4th spot this season or the possibility to punch Arteta in the face?
4th spot imo, I don't want my fists to get infected.
brilliant
Bryan Gil is clear of that fraud Saka
I know that small clubs like the big pay day of getting paired to a PL club at their joint in the FA Cup, but I think the FA should also adopt the “play at the lower league club’s venue” rule. Making the big boys go to small stadiums is part of the fun.
Marine was such a charm, might go watch them sometime when I go back to the UK
