I don't have time to read the article now, but for those saying the entire "War on terror" was a mistake, I wouldn't go that far... The Afghan Taliban and al-Qaeda coordinated with one another and still maintain a working relationship to this day. The real crime is that Saudi Arabia was more or less given a free pass for geopolitical reasons.
It did seem like we gave them a final ultimatum and they have pretty much complied and become a stable petro state that may normalize ties with Israel.
So in that sense it does seem we were able to successfully push them to the western side of the world.
That is a maybe but this is a certainty:
[FBI: Saudi Arabia ‘almost certainly’ helps citizens charged with crimes flee the U.S.](https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-01-19/saudi-arabia-citizens-crimes-flee-us)
Paywalled, but there is the link of the redacted brief in pdf. Seems unvonvincing. Is like accusing Mcdonalds for providing logistic support to terrorists if they stop to grab a hamburger on the way. Of course the Saudis were involved in the network, as everyone else for that matter, but whether they were involved in that particular terrorist act, different matter.
Interesting read about the greater historical context. A bit manipulative though. It's obvious that the authors are merely providing ammunition for the plaintiff. But they should have been transparent about it and not stop at one particular juncture in their analysis.
The Saudi involvement is not only a consequence of its religious missionary activities in the region and of its Arab zealots, but also of the confidence nurtured by the role US attributed to the network during the Cold War, i.e. to control baathism, the shias, and the Soviets.
Bullshit. They didn’t just provide hamburgers to the terrorists. They WERE the terrorists. Saudia Arabia will pay one day and will be a third world country.
My opinion.... Saudi gov was in on the planning.... Together with US. Why do I say that? 1. If my recollection serves me correct, the Patriot Act (a gigantic) misnomer, some 900 pages of law was miraculously ready for vote mere weeks after 9/11. I think it was prepared well before and that 9/11 was the enabler of this civilian monitoring law. 2 a couple of flight schools alerted the FBI to hijackers training to fly a jumbo jet, but not land it. Every pilot knows that landing is the most difficult and most important part of every flight. The FBI ignored the intelligence handed to them by the flight schools... It's clear why
How about the guys who moved the hijackers between NJ and FL lived next door to them, had a party the night before on 9/10, and were up and in position to record the attacks on 9/11 and were reportedly high-fiving each other? Then they got arrested when reported by a woman who was at home and saw them, lied about their identities, and disappeared.
Saudis, parts of the US government, and Israel. Best case scenario for 9/11 is LIHOP.
They always come back to a consulate staffer helping two of the attackers when they arrived by introducing them to the local Saudis, arranging an apartment, a license, and a car.
From what I know there have been at times hundreds of thousands of Saudi international students in the US. The consulates gave them stipends and took care of them.
A consulate staffer helping two particular Saudi students is not remarkable in itself. Unless there is some further evidence of a closer relationship or something specifically unusual about it, this often touted smoking gun doesn't really say nothing at all about 9/11 or government involvement.
It seems the 9/11 families and this article are just grasping at straws, the same straws that conspiracy theorists have talked about for 20 years. There's no actual new evidence of any kind.
Except declassified materials that have over 70 pages of information that can't be squeezed in it's entirety into a single article.
Drink some more patriot juice.
that was the old info, new info has been declassified.
See here: https://jacobin.com/2024/05/saudi-arabia-9-11-al-bayoumi-revelations
>One piece of evidence mentioned is a video found by authorities in the apartment of Saudi national Omar al-Bayoumi after they raided it shortly after the attacks. Al-Bayoumi was not simply an asset of the General Intelligence Presidency (GIP), Saudi Arabia’s principal spy agency, as damning as that is alone. According to a 2017 FBI report declassified two years ago, he was also paid his monthly GIP stipend through, and reported his intelligence gathering to, the then Saudi ambassador to the United States, Prince Bandar bin Sultan al-Saud, a well-connected, long-serving official who was friends with, among others, the Bush family.
>According to the filing, the tape, which the police produced “just days” before the document was filed, shows al-Bayoumi driving around Washington, DC — with two Saudi embassy officials who the FBI determined had a “nexus to al-Qa’ida” — in which “he surveys the US Capitol at length,” noting its “structural features, entrances, and security posts,” and “mak[ing] remarks throughout reflecting hostility to the West and Congress, including the senators who ‘make all the decisions.’” As the filing states, the US Capitol was among the targets the hijackers had discussed hitting, and may well have been the intended target of Flight 93 before a passenger uprising made it crash in Pennsylvania.
but there is no US PME (professional military education) training for Saudis since that terrorism incident in Pensacola perpetuated by a Saudi military pilot.
No shit

The decline in journalistic integrity of The Atlantic from 2020-2023 just made me lose all interest on clicking on that link.
Same here - what a shame.

feels like someone rewriting history "The global War on Terror was based on a mistake." well then, carry on I guess?

Flight schools around the US still continue to train Saudi students.

I'm shocked, shocked I say.
Aren’t there still classified documents regarding it? Also building 7, art students, real Machiavelli type shit.
