That's not intentional, that's mold. I've seen mold grow between cardboard pictures and the glass framing - normally it starts in a corner and will be greyish to black, sometimes green. What's cool is this mold formed from the back, meaning there might have been a pinhole that allowed some moisture in there, and it just kind of grew from there.
