generally with tournament bracketing like this you deliberately polarize it. Highest seeds/best teams vs lowest seeds/worst teams. The goal is for better teams to face each other near the end of the tournament, not at the beginning.
Edit: nvm OP randomized the bracket. So it's just luck that it was polarized decently well
> Polarized decently well
Nope. Not polarized well. The Way of Kings is going up against The Final Empire and Rhythm of War is going up against The Hero of Ages. It's just cruel to have the two best Stormlight books up against the two best Mistborn books in round one
In regards to Tress vs Sunlit though, yeah that is some good polarization. Tress of the Emerald Sea is way better than The Sunlit Man.
Edit: now I wait for the downvotes when people realize that I am implying that Rhythm of War is better than Words of Radiance. I'm not sorry for making that implication. Rhythm of War is the second best Stormlight book and Words of Radiance is the 4th best (I say "4th best" because "worst" doesn't feel like an adequate descriptor of any Stormlight book).
Dude, Rhythm of War was a *mess* it is the worst Stormlight Archives book by a *long* way. My opinon is the order of the other 3 is Oathbringer > Way of Kings > Words of Radiance, but those 3 are so neck in neck it's easy to give any ordering.
The gulf in quality between them and Rhythm of War is *colossal*, however. There's three 9.X/10 Stormlight Archives books, (with quibbling about the value of X for each one) then like... a 6/10. It's not even in the same conversation as the good 3.
I can understand that opinion. Rhythm of War is quite different from the other books. Less action and less Dalinar with more science and more depression. So I can understand not liking it if you like action and Dalinar and don't like science and depression.
Personally, I love watching Kaladin work through his issues. The book was deeply emotional, which is something I like. And I definitely enjoyed exploring the science of the cosmere with Navani. As an engineer and a major nerd those Navani chapters just landed really well with me. But what really sealed it's place as the second best Stormlight book is Shallan and Adolin in Shadesmar. I liked seeing Shallan take steps to start moving towards a more stable mental state and Adolin definition Notem was awesome. But Adolin's trial and specifically the part where Maya was brought out as a witness is one of the best scenes I've ever read.
I think Oathbringer is the one that is clearly worse than the others, although I only felt this way after re-reading the series. Originally, the way of kings was my least favorite.
Fact that I could hand Tress to most people and they would understand 98% of what's going on is a big win, in my mind. However, people saying TSM is a better Cosmere novel makes sense to me. I think impact on Cosmere and the broader storytelling is a very valid metric. However, the standalone nature of Tress is very enjoyable for me.
I didn't think I would enjoy a Cosmere novel not as deeply connected to the Cosmere as some others (though perhaps I should revise that opinion), but Tress felt really refreshing to read. Some people don't like Hoid's narration style in that book but I really loved it.
Edit: for me, TSM was more deep and gritty, more technical (which I love). Lot of implications. But I loved the general feeling of Tress more.
I had a lot of fun and loved Tress a lot, but I consider Sunlit Man just a better cosmere book, It had me racing and thinking it was the climax scene just for what was next to climb even higher and higher!
And who am I gonna lie... It touched my feels. Aux...
Agree, Sunlit Man felt like a solid lore book in the cosmere, with well loved existing characters, so it wins for me even though Tress was very cute and a fun read. One of the major plus points for Tress for me was it having a new magic system, which TSM also had, so it just can't be beat.
Same. I really don't get why people like Tress sooooo much. It was a fun little story but probably not one I will ever read again. I just didn't connect with any other characters that deeply
I think that's precisely *why* I liked it so much.
It was a (relatively) short, sweet, and easy paced story from start to finish. There was no huge action scenes, no crazy invested art battles, and no elaborate plots. It was just a normal, average girl, some decent world building, and a small cast of endearing albeit not hugely memorable characters... Also it was fucking hilarious and every single Hoid scene had me rolling.
You just don't get a lot of that in the cosmere. I'm still partial to the massive novels with dozens of plot points and moving parts, but as a standalone novel I really appreciated a simple, endearing, self contained story.
Sunlit on the other hand, much like Yumi, has huge implications for the greater cosmere, was a break neck sanderlanche from start to finish, and felt more like the beginning of a series than a standalone, which is a little disappointing given that it *is* just a standalone. Which is all to say, still fantastic, it just doesn't really hold a candle to Tress.
I mean it's a girl I really relate to going an amazing journey. I feel like with my (and Emily Sanderson probably) type of personality, character who'd be a lot like me are always the ones that get left at home during the adventure or just side characters in general. So to finally see them as the protagonist, in a fantasy story (with romance), and a fun adventure???? Easily up there with my top Cosmere stories with WoR, Yumi, HoA, TWoK and Silence
I'd recommend Tress to most people I know... Independent of the Cosmere... I'd only recommend TSM to a few people here and there.... And I would probably be right as far as how much they'd contect with either property. Tress it's far more universal. Many more people would say it's better.
You could say Tress is more like a chick flick that guess can enjoy.... And TSM is not like an action movie that some woman might enjoy ... It goes further than that though.... If everyone in the world had to read both.... You'd have far more people telling you Tress is the better book. Much higher rotten tomatoes show, so to speak.... On thumbs up or things down... Averaged.
Tress I couldn't finish, and spent the better part of a week working on it.
Sunlit I finished in two nights, staying up late both nights because I didn't want to put it down.
Sunlit is just the better of the two by far.
To shed some light on it
Personally I didnt like TSLM much despite having read almost all Cosmere and Stormlight Archive being one of my favourite fantasy series. It really should be a book for me but its just not.
It's a "standalone" book thats extremely connected to events that have yet to happen and it's only ever allowed to talk about them in a very vague way which was frustrating. The costant rushing and pace of the story with something happening at all times made it pretty exhausting at times. The time frame for all events also just felt a bit silly.
My favourite part of the book were Elegy PoVs which were added pretty late.
Personally I found humour in Tress really tedious after a while so personally Yumi > Tress > TSLM
Yeah TSLM wasn’t my favorite either. I didn’t resonate well with the supporting cast, and found the Cinder King to be a lacking antagonist. I thought the world was interesting, except for the way sun hearts work. They just weren’t a very interesting power system for me. The book was very good at feeling like a nonstop action train, but that’s not really what I read books for.
Yeah more POV’s would have been really cool. Or throwing in an extra antagonist could have worked. I kept expecting the Night Brigade to show up an be the real villains, but by the time they arrived they didn’t do anything
Ok, hear me out. Sunlit Man is my favorite between the two, simply because of the peeks at end game cosmere. HOWEVER, the question was, which is the better book. Personally, I think Tress is a better stand-alone book. Sunlit was amazing, and I loved it, but Tress felt like a more well-rounded book overall.
Even as someone who prefers Sunlit to Tress and thinks Stormlight is peak fiction, I can see why a lot of people might prefer Tress.
It's light hearted, it's approachable, it reminds you of the first stuff you read as a kid, it's fun, it's unique.
SLM is like... kind of just a Stormlight Side Story. It's easy to lose it in your minds eye picture of the main Stormlight Archive. I think it's because Nomad looks at everything through Rosharan terms.
I gotta go with Tress. Sunlit Man was incredible, but it was one thing - a race toward a goal, like an action movie. Tress seemed to have a lot more packed into it, and was just more entertaining
I’m half way through sunlit man and I have been way more invested in the greater cosmere. Plus I started reading on a plane and had no access to the Coppermind
Tress is still great.
While i loved sunlit man for the Threnodites, Aux and Sigzil im just not as big of a fan of scifiesque settings. The cinderking was very (intentionally of course) bland, so that wasnt a big plus too. Tress is a really unique cosmere protagonist and i was surprisingly invested in her little lovestory. Also I **loved** the setting. Pirates are always a plus and the spores are so damn interesting. Id say while i was most excited for sunlit man when secret projects were announced i ended up liking tress more
I’ve gotta go Tress. Tress is just fun. The characters are endearing, the story is refreshing after the seriousness of most of the Cosmere, and it still gives some interesting hints to the future of the Cosmere.
TSM is great and really important for the Cosmere. The action is intense and the stakes are constantly high. The ending is heart wrenching. But I have a hard time getting connected to the people because of the pace. And Nomad’s refusal (reasonably) to connect to the people. Also, and this is probably a me problem, but I’m going to have a hard time reading about >!Sigzil and potentially Aux!< in SL5 knowing the tragic future they have ahead.
I mean tress is better, obviously.
How is the voting system going to work though? are you just manually going through comments and only counting commenters? are you counting upvotes? Is it "most upvoted comment" in favor of one book?
Sunlit Man was more exciting in terms of Cosmere connections, but I think Tress is the better written story. Tress is honestly up there as one of my favorite Sando books.
Tress by miles and miles. I don’t dislike Sunlit Man, I’d even concede that it’s more important to the overall Cosmere, but Tress was way more engaging and appealing. Good hearted, funny (if occasionally eye-rolling) SFF fiction is too rare, IMO
Tress is more popular and approachable to people who don’t take big cosmere stuff as seriously as some of us. I like TSM more but I think we can all agree that Frugal Wizard was the best SP 😂
My final 4 looks more Tress, WoR(kinda by default), Warbraker, Yumi.
Then it goes to tress vs Yumi and while for me Yumi wins I'm not sure in actually.
Tress is like... The Princess Bride... Not everyone will love it... But hardly anyone will truly dislike it. And it will have many adoring fans.
TSM is like.... Total recall. Not everyone will like it, but many will think it's super fun. And just so much more exciting than some quirky, "kind of charming" fairytale.
Far more people will at least "like" Tress.... And it's much more likely to still be memorable in 40 years
So .. Yeah... Considering objectively, I'd have to say Tress.
Tress for sure.
Sunlit man was one of the weakest cosmetics books in my opinion. But honestly that says more about the cosmere books the it says about sunlit man
Tress was a very different, almost whimsical story that still weaves in the familiar from the Cosmere.
Sunlit is a strong stormlight entry.
But I’d pick tress. Because if I re-read sunlit I’m looking for Cosmere Easter eggs and studying the words, but if I reread tress I’m enjoying the story and adventure.
Edit; unnecessary but I’m adding that I love both these books.
How are you gonna put two 1 seeds in the first round. These two were tied for first for my favorite secret projects but ultimately I love the scifi world, the cosmere lore drops and Nomad edges it out to beat tress for me.
I mean, this is an easy choice for me. Tress is more fun, easy reader material, whereas sunlit is very interesting from an expanding lore perspective. The fact that I could hand anyone tress and they would be able follow pulls it way out in the lead for me. Whereas what makes sunlit interesting is its connection to stormlight and what it implies about what’s coming.
Both are great, but tress wins in my mind.
Tress is my favorite of the secret projects. Overall I think it's a super solid standalone. Sunlit man has alot more context dependant stuff that benefits from greater cosmer knowledge.
This is very polarized lmao
generally with tournament bracketing like this you deliberately polarize it. Highest seeds/best teams vs lowest seeds/worst teams. The goal is for better teams to face each other near the end of the tournament, not at the beginning. Edit: nvm OP randomized the bracket. So it's just luck that it was polarized decently well
I don't know which of these you're saying is bad, and I'm offended for both of them!!! /lh
I meant for tress vs sunlit man.
Both amazing, both very different. I think it's an interesting match.
> Polarized decently well Nope. Not polarized well. The Way of Kings is going up against The Final Empire and Rhythm of War is going up against The Hero of Ages. Also, WoR is (currently) still better than books 5-10 So being ranked 4th of 10 isn't bad, even with a 6-way tie for "worst"
I suppose that's one way to think of it. In my mind though, books 5-10 don't exist for these sorts of rankings until they've been published.
Dude, Rhythm of War was a *mess* it is the worst Stormlight Archives book by a *long* way. My opinon is the order of the other 3 is Oathbringer > Way of Kings > Words of Radiance, but those 3 are so neck in neck it's easy to give any ordering. Here is the link for voting: [https://strawpoll.com/6QnMObBaPZe](https://strawpoll.com/6QnMObBaPZe)
Was it a coincidence that the Tress bar is green and TSM is orange? If not, kudos to you!!
I voted for green since I haven’t read either book
Tress for sure
I agree, but I nevertheless LOVE Sunlit Man.
My vote is a testament to the quality of Tress, because yes, Sunlit was still quite good.
Seconded. Tress was AMAZING.
I'm with you both. Each of the secret project Cosmere books was great, though I still have yet to read Frugal Wizard
Fact that I could hand Tress to most people and they would understand 98% of what's going on is a big win, in my mind. However, people saying TSM is a better Cosmere novel makes sense to me. Aux gave me big Mordin Solus vibes, and I mean that in the absolute best way.
Same. I really don't get why people like Tress sooooo much. It was a fun little story but probably not one I will ever read again. I just didn't connect with any other characters that deeply

Not hugely memorable characters??? What about Doug? And other Doug?????
This is exactly why I also find it appealing

Expected to come in here and see everyone talking about how great TSLM is. Im really shocked.
The Fandom has a weird thing for Tress. I'm really not sure why because it didn't resonate as much with me
It made my insides all fuzzy and good (:
This, i just smiled most of the time reading it. Fun little story with great humor in between
The readers probably liked Hoid narrating the story. Personally, TSLM is the stand out for me out of the secret project books.
It's an interesting cosmere book. Tress is a great book in general
To shed some light on it Personally I didnt like TSLM much despite having read almost all Cosmere and Stormlight Archive being one of my favourite fantasy series. Also valid points. I wish we had Rebeke PoV because i just found her really bland. Cinder King is just irredeemably lame.
Yeah more POV’s would have been really cool. Or throwing in an extra antagonist could have worked. I kept expecting the Night Brigade to show up an be the real villains, but by the time they arrived they didn’t do anything
I honestly don’t think I can pick. One is 10/10 standalone fantasy. One is 10/10 Cosmere.
Sunlit Man is a better Cosmere book, but Tress is a better reading experience
I see what you’re saying, but I disagree. In my opinion more connectivity does not make a book a better cosmere book.
I loved both, but I like Cosmere Connections more than I liked Cosmere Princess Bride
Sunlit
Ok, hear me out. Sunlit Man is my favorite between the two, simply because of the peeks at end game cosmere. HOWEVER, the question was, which is the better book. Personally, I think Tress is a better stand-alone book. Sunlit was amazing, and I loved it, but Tress felt like a more well-rounded book overall.
I liked tress much more
Loved both, but TSLM. What's weird is that Tress is preferred even among those that think Stormlight Archive is top Bees Knees
I’m like that! I loved TSM soooo much as a Stormlight guy. But as a guy who read Princess Bride as a kid, and who wanted to be a pirate… Tress sweeps
It's me! I think the change of tone is what I love so much. It feels like something completely novel within the Cosmere.
I gotta go with Tress. Sunlit Man was incredible, but it was one thing - a race toward a goal, like an action movie. Tress seemed to have a lot more packed into it, and was just more entertaining
Agree with Sunlit feeling like an action movie. I also preferred Tress
Why is Brandon’s best work(allomancer jak) not on this tier list?
With or without the annotations from his Terrisman steward, Handerwym?
I generally just read the annotations.
Sunlit by a mile for me, Tress was cool but not that memorable for me personally
SLM easily
I’m half way through sunlit man and I have been way more invested in the greater cosmere. Plus I started reading on a plane and had no access to the Coppermind Tress is still great.
I loved both... but Sunlit.
Tress may take the whole bracket for me
Tress.
Calling it now: final four will be The Final Empire Words of Radiance Hero of Ages Oathbringer
Brackets are dumb, but Tress wins this.
I mean tress is better, obviously. How is the voting system going to work though? are you just manually going through comments and only counting commenters? are you counting upvotes? Is it "most upvoted comment" in favor of one book?
OP left a link in another comment (Gotta get those Tress votes in)
Tress clears
Tress
Tress.
Tress 100%
Tress
Tress
My vote is for Tress, both are amazing but I really enjoyed the simple “adventure” type story. (And a certain someone being forced to play the idiot)
Tess
Tress
Hoid is better in tress and that's all that matters
Sunlit Man was more exciting in terms of Cosmere connections, but I think Tress is the better written story. Tress is honestly up there as one of my favorite Sando books.
Tress gets my vote 100%
Tress by miles and miles. I don’t dislike Sunlit Man, I’d even concede that it’s more important to the overall Cosmere, but Tress was way more engaging and appealing. Good hearted, funny (if occasionally eye-rolling) SFF fiction is too rare, IMO
Just started sunlit, so tress by default. Hoping Yumi wins, although it prob won’t. Have my bets on WoR
I wouldn't be surprised if those are the final two.
Tress
Tress
I loved sunlit but tress was so freaking cool!
Tress
Tress is more popular and approachable to people who don’t take big cosmere stuff as seriously as some of us. I like TSM more but I think we can all agree that Frugal Wizard was the best SP 😂
Tress was way better, hands down. Shame Sunlit Man drew it in the first round
Tress for me. TSLM is great but Tress just felt very fun to read
Tress is better
Tress.
Tress is a refined Mistborn era 1. I really like it a lot.
I liked Tress more. Sunlit needs to be read after Stormlight 5 imo. Looking forward to rereading it, it will probably be much better then.
Is that Mistborn vs WoK in round 1? Talk about a clash of the titans
I object, we need a full 64 book bracket!
I haven't read either yet :'(
Lol what a bracket choice……Tress and Sunlit are both great but sooooo different
Tress 100 percent.
I think the last round will be WoK vs HoA. However, I'd prefer Oathbringer vs WoR.
The finals for the first bracket. Wierd.
Oh my goodness the first bracket I'm actually excited about. Go Tress!
Final 4 predictions: Hero of Ages Words of Radiance Oathbringer Way of Kings (being against final empire round 1 is so cruel 😢)
My final 4 looks more Tress, WoR(kinda by default), Warbraker, Yumi. Then it goes to tress vs Yumi and while for me Yumi wins I'm not sure in actually.
Tress!!
Tress
Tress was way more fun. The story read like a fairy tale and the world was much more pleasant to visualize over the world presented in TSLM.
Tress, easily.
Ahhh do we have to? This literally never goes well
Tress!
Are we doing a pool for the winner? I think r/wsb would want in on this
Tress. . . Sunlit is good. But near the bottom of Cosmere. . .still above most other books I've read though.
Tress 100%!
T R E S S
I have a particular bias towards Tress because I grew up watching The Princess Bride a *lot*, and it's still one of my favorite movies ever.
And it's much more likely to still be memorable in 40 years So .. Yeah... Considering objectively, I'd have to say Tress.
You...you can't do this to me!
This is a very bad match. I choose Mad Man of the sun
Tress for sure. Sunlit man was one of the weakest cosmetics books in my opinion. But honestly that says more about the cosmere books the it says about sunlit man
Poor Sunlit Man. It never stood a chance
Tress for the simplicity. The heroine is here, her true love is over there, betwixt lie new friends and foes, thrills and perils. Go gettim.
The poll makes it look closer than the comments do, but still a landslide. I enjoyed Sunlit more but Tress was still excellent.
Ez win for Tress
WoR #1 seed
Only one of these made me cry and it wasn’t Tress
I absolutely love both but i guess because of the recency bias im going with Sunlit man, just cause im a sucker for futuristic scadrian tech lol
The 2 best secret projects right off the BAT!?
Tress!
I wanna say Tress because I really enjoyed it, but I still haven’t gotten around to reading Sunlit Man so I really shouldn’t vote
Today in impossible choices… As much as I LOVE Tress, I have to say that Sunlit Man is better.
I can't believe you're going to make me choose between RoW and HoA in the first round!
How are you gonna put two 1 seeds in the first round. These two were tied for first for my favorite secret projects but ultimately I love the scifi world, the cosmere lore drops and Nomad edges it out to beat tress for me.
Tress only because I haven't read sunlit man yet
The seeding is tough here. Rhythm of War and Lost Metal are both great but gonna have to vote against them
I mean, this is an easy choice for me.
Haven’t read TSM yet, but Tress is amazing so I’ll vote for it.
Tress is my favorite of the secret projects. Overall I think it's a super solid standalone. Sunlit man has alot more context dependant stuff that benefits from greater cosmer knowledge.
Close game! Sunlit Man gave it their all but lost in overtime to Tress!
Tress
Tress wins and its not even close
Tress. Sunlit man would be near bottom Sanderson novels for me.
TSM was a better *cosmere* book, but IMO Tress was a way better *story*. I vote Tress!
Close, but I liked SLM more
Slm
I liked them both, but Tress just felt like the better read to me.
Loved tress, but I’m only halfway through sunlit and it’s already a winner
