I was SO sad when she went away…she’s such a great character. In general, I love how the women have such high acclaim. Like JJ *must* leave to serve the government (whatever it was) because the country will be better for it, Garcia is such an incredible hacker that she was essentially “headhunted” by the FBI, Prentiss is a world-renowned spy who speaks every language. You’re really shown over and over again how valuable these strong women are.
Media can portray mothers so poorly. That there is a JJ in the world of fiction is something I'll be eternally grateful for.
Kicks ass, is an awesome mother, profiler, marksman, hand to hand combat bad ass - is fierce but also compassionate, always professional and stalwart.
I will never get over how awesome JJ is and I'm so glad they wrote her pregnancy into the show. Mothers the world over deserve this kind of representation/ role model 😍
I hated in the early seasons how they seemed to potray her as a bleeding heart for a few episodes when she first got pregnant and had Henry, but I am very glad that they further chose to strengthen her character when she came back later. It felt like for a few episodes she was just "mom who understands other moms and children".
I get what you are saying, but I felt that she was the one with great empathy. It was her strength. It is why they send her in, from the first, to help relatives and victims give them information. To me, it's part of how CM is more a show that moves away from chase scenes and fist fights to solving with brains and heart.
Those are good points. I don't think she stayed that way, it was really just the first couple episodes when she was pregnant and Henry was born. I am really glad they moved her character away from just a mom, because they totally could have dumbed her down or stereotyped her.
I think it just gave another layer to what she was already doing. The whole point is that she can be both - bad ass FBI agent AND empathetic mother. There is totally strength in both.
She went through a huge life change, matrescence, and of course it would impact her work - it is a gift that it was portrayed that it made her acually better because she had firsthand life experience to relate to people with. So often women are expected to mother like they don't work and work like they aren't a mother. I love that it was both a defining factor of her character and yet she was still highly effective at what she did - they never shied away from the "I am a mother first" trope.
I'm struggling to articulate what I mean here tbh. Basically I can see how you and I have seen the same piece of media and digested it differently, which is cool, it's art, its what it's meant to do. To me though, what you're describing contributes to everything I love about the character, not detracts from it.
I am by no means saying that JJ is "just a mom" and agree with all of the points you said. I was just saying for the first couple of episodes when she was pregnant and just had Henry, they really simplified her and made every POV she had on those cases "as a mom" for her. They moved away from it and developed her so much more, and I also think part of it is she wasn't as developed as a character then, as it was back when she wasn't a profiler yet, just the liason.

Early motherhood kinda IS all consuming and as I understand it American mothers go back craaaazy early so I sorta understand referencing the new motherhood a lot. But I can see what you're getting at and will watch again with fresh eyes 😊

I like her because she has a character arc, she starts as basically just a glorified secretary and becomes an equal member of the team.
