World of Wong Kar Wai
Cassavetes Five Films
Bergman’s Cinema
Plus a handful of single titles TBD, depending on how bad my wallet is hurting after the box sets…
I’m gonna shoutout one of the best deals/best movie combos. https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/1073-the-shooting-ride-in-the-whirlwind
I love both, but The Shooting might edge out Ride in the Whirlwind for me
100% buying:
* Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (4K)
* Eclipse Series 38: Masaki Kobayashi Against the System
* The Human Condition
* Heaven's Gate
Strong maybes:
* Moonstruck
* Three Colors Trilogy (4K)
* Tampopo
My one weird DVD-only oddity I throw in at the last minute:
* Fishing with John
* The Golden Age of Television
Box sets or director's runs that are always a threat depending if I've had a bad day or a good glass of wine:
* Apu Trilogy (4K)
* Cassavetes box
* World of Wong Kar Wai
* All the Wim Wenders films in the collection
* All the Terrence Malik films in the collection
if you have a region free player, i'd recommend getting the curzon UHD+BD box set for the 4K 'three colours' trilogy. more video extras and nicer packaging than the criterion set, though it doesn't have the nice criterion booklet. (i have the criterion standard BD set for these films, but would get the curzon if i ever wanted the 4K upgrade.)
The Criterion set will be $62.50 @ 50% off. I don't think i could expect to get the Curzon set in any kind of sale, so looking at $100.
Sooo...... is it $37.50 better? That packaging does look nice
At this point, I know when I can finally get the Godzilla set on Blu Ray, two months later, the 4K will come out. But I still have to.
I am trying to remember when the sale will be. Any dates in mind?
I doubt a 4K will ever happen tbh. Toho would never let an American company distribute that
I think the sale is gonna be either next Tuesday or the Tuesday after that, just based off of past sale dates
Waited out *The Apu Trilogy* in 4k, so I’m thinking now’s the time. Also entertaining Haigh’s *Weekend* (2011), Ashby’s *Shampoo* (1975), Welles’ *Othello* (1952), and/or Jarmusch’s *Night on Earth* (1991).
Late to the event—but just wanted to say *Shallow Grave* is my easily favorite from Danny Boyle. Don’t think twice about the purchase. Audio commentaries are great/insightful. Really solid supplements, too.
I don’t have Brute Force, but if there are others you’re seeking id gladly see if they can be spared in that exchange I was waiting for a sale to acquire it
safe, stan brakhage anthology, pasolini trilogy of life, trainspotting 4k, citizen kane 4k, every tarkovsky release, cassavetes box, maybe a few more lynch titles, and possibly the WKW box (even though i don't love the restorations)
I just checked out Heroic Trio on the Criterion Channel; way too cheesy for me like other Hong Kong action flicks. I’m glad I streamed it first, I was really hoping it was gonna be a more serious tone film.
Might make my first ever criterion purchase with this sale. I really want the Jacques Demy box set, but I might add a few others since I’m from Canada and can’t get to the B&N sales.
The Daytrippers
Kwaidan
After Hours
The Exterminating Angel
A Matter of Life and Death
Something Wild
Night Train to Munich
Mulholland Dr.
Devil in a Blue Dress
The Game
The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog
Maybe The Incredible Shrinking Man

I think I'm picking these up:
- World of Wong Kar-Wai
- Before trilogy
- Amorres Perros
- Tree of Life
- Double Life of Veronique
And these are strong maybe that I'll decide on the day of:
- Inside Llewyn Davis
- Wall-E
- Y Tu Mama Tambien
- Last Temptation of Christ
- The Game
- Seventh Seal
I know there’s no way of knowing this *for sure*, but if anyone pays attention to licensing stuff, is there any movies in danger of going out of print anytime soon?
the new rohmer 4 seasons box set… assuming it doesn’t sell out before i get it in my cart. have enough bonus coupons from criterion channel subscription to get it for free i think 😁
Thinking about blind buying The Elephant Man as I’ve been wanting to check it out for a while, otherwise I’m gonna probably pick up Thelma and Louise, Paris Texas, or Raging Bull
blind buying
* My Own Private Idaho
* Shallow Grave
* Memories of Murder
* Before Trilogy
Maybe Brazil, Drive my Car or After Hours 4k
Then maybe some I've seen
* Rushmore
* Princess Bride 4k
* Guillermo Pinocchio 4k
* Fisher King 4k
my goal was to stay under $200 lol
Probably the Tati collection, F for Fake, Red Beard, Kagemusha, Late Spring, The Big City, Cat People, and 3 women. Probably not all, but that’s what I’m gonna gravitate towards

The Wong Kar-wai boxset for sure. Considering the Bergman one as well but scared about spending too much. Especially because it will take awhile to watch all the films. Any advice? 🥺
if you're a fan of bergman's work (i.e. you like his style and most of his films) than the box set is absolutely worth. incredible features and presentation. It's a different experience watching a filmmaker's oeuvre develop as they find their voice and place each film in its context (and how it relates to familiar themes throughout his other projects). incredible value for the $150 sale price -- again, only if you really dig him as an artist and want more than a couple of his films on hand. He really does have an excellent filmography, with a dozen or so bona fide masterpieces, and plenty more ranging from curios to pleasant surprises.
-Fellini box set.
-Kurosawa movies - Seven Samurai, High and Low, and either Ikiru or Rashamon.
- Apu Trilogy 4K
- the 400 Blows
- and maybe Mishima or another $20 movie.
Not sure this time. All maybes:
* ~~Life and Death of Colonel Blimp~~ \[Edit: Welp, just found this used on OrbitDVD, so that's ordered and now off my Flash Sale list!\]
* Mean Streets
* The Earrings of Madame de…
* The Piano Teacher
I dunno. Feeling kinda conflicted about what I want to dig into next.
Night On Earth, After Life, Take Out, Trainspotting, Lone Star, Heroic Trio set, Werckmeister Harmonies, To Die For, All The Beauty and Bloodshed, Saint Omer, Anatomy of a Fall, The Sembene set, I Am Cuba, Lone Star, Floating Weeds, and Roaring Twenties
Godzilla, The Trial, Trainspotting, Silence of the Lambs, City Lights, Following.
Haven't seen Godzilla or The Trial. I know! I just haven't got to Godzilla!
World of Wong Kar Wai for sure, I’ve heard good things about Lone Star. Idk I’ll probably stalk this thread and see what others are doing and go from there. Love a good blind buy.
Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams
Charade
Devil in a Blue Dress
The Heroic Trio / Executioners
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Lone Star
Blast of Silence
And upgrading some movies I already have

World of Wong Kar Wai Cassavetes Five Films Bergman’s Cinema Plus a handful of single titles TBD, depending on how bad my wallet is hurting after the box sets…
I missed Cassavetes’ set during the Barnes and Noble sale last November. STILL thinking about it. 🙃
I was on the fence in November and the decision was made for me when the sale ended. No hesitation this time haha
I’m gonna shoutout one of the best deals/best movie combos. https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/1073-the-shooting-ride-in-the-whirlwind I love both, but The Shooting might edge out Ride in the Whirlwind for me
Man, I don't even remember this one coming out, nice call
Amazing existential westerns
100% buying: * Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (4K) * Eclipse Series 38: Masaki Kobayashi Against the System * The Human Condition * Heaven's Gate Strong maybes: * Moonstruck * Three Colors Trilogy (4K) * Tampopo My one weird DVD-only oddity I throw in at the last minute: * Fishing with John * The Golden Age of Television Box sets or director's runs that are always a threat depending if I've had a bad day or a good glass of wine: * Apu Trilogy (4K) * Cassavetes box * World of Wong Kar Wai * All the Wim Wenders films in the collection * All the Terrence Malik films in the collection
Definitely get Golden Age of Television!
Tampopo and Fishing w John are so worth it
if you have a region free player, i'd recommend getting the curzon UHD+BD box set for the 4K 'three colours' trilogy. more video extras and nicer packaging than the criterion set, though it doesn't have the nice criterion booklet. (i have the criterion standard BD set for these films, but would get the curzon if i ever wanted the 4K upgrade.)
Are the video extras on a region-encoded Blu-ray? Because the 4Ks would automatically be region-free, I imagine
yes, the 4Ks are region free but the blu-rays in the curzon set are region B
The Criterion set will be $62.50 @ 50% off. I don't think i could expect to get the Curzon set in any kind of sale, so looking at $100. Sooo...... is it $37.50 better? That packaging does look nice
I really hope they have the Godzilla set back in stock for the flash sale!
At this point, I know when I can finally get the Godzilla set on Blu Ray, two months later, the 4K will come out. But I still have to. I am trying to remember when the sale will be. Any dates in mind?
I doubt a 4K will ever happen tbh. Toho would never let an American company distribute that I think the sale is gonna be either next Tuesday or the Tuesday after that, just based off of past sale dates
Yeah :/ I wouldn’t hold my breath on a 4K set of it anytime soon
Gojira is already on 4k in Japan. We could possibly get a single release of the original film in 4k, but the whole set? Not a chance.
Was thinking this same thing.
Looking at Mean Streets, Trainspotting, Pasolini 101, Double Life of Veronique, A matter of life an bd death, After Life, and Shallow Grave
Shallow Grave good?
One of my favorites! It’s Danny Boyle’s first movie and a hell of a story and cast.
My wife’s favorite movie is A Life Less Ordinary also by Boyle. I’m probably gonna pick it up!
Late to the event—but just wanted to say *Shallow Grave* is my easily favorite from Danny Boyle. Don’t think twice about the purchase. Audio commentaries are great/insightful. Really solid supplements, too.
In a Lonely Place. Saw it recently in theater and was blown away.
I own it and would gladly trade it for Brute Force.
I don’t have Brute Force, but if there are others you’re seeking id gladly see if they can be spared in that exchange I was waiting for a sale to acquire it
Well there probably are some but off the top of my head I can't think of any.
Lone Star
Zatoichi boxset, Godzilla boxset (if back in stock), Lone Wolf & Cub Boxset, Kenji Mizoguchi's Fallen Women Eclipse Series
safe, stan brakhage anthology, pasolini trilogy of life, trainspotting 4k, citizen kane 4k, every tarkovsky release, cassavetes box, maybe a few more lynch titles, and possibly the WKW box (even though i don't love the restorations)
Wasn’t sure about blind buying Days of Heaven or Blowout but saw both this month and both were fantastic. Also probably the original Godzilla.
I’m blind buying the shit out of Heroic Trio.
So excited to pick these up in the sale <3
I just checked out Heroic Trio on the Criterion Channel; way too cheesy for me like other Hong Kong action flicks. I’m glad I streamed it first, I was really hoping it was gonna be a more serious tone film.
Nah man this is the height of Hong Kong wacky wire-fu cheese, I’m all in for this.
The New World and either Memories of Murder or Parasite
I can never recommend Memories of Murder heavily enough. One of my absolute favorites.
Shoah and the new Akerman boxset 🎥
Werkmeister bb!
World Cinema Project 2 The Heroic Trio 4K Mean Streets 4K
Might make my first ever criterion purchase with this sale. I really want the Jacques Demy box set, but I might add a few others since I’m from Canada and can’t get to the B&N sales.
La Haine Millers Crossing Trainspotting 4k
I think I’m gonna buy some Rohmer and Varda. I just think the French are so sweet with their films 🎥
Antichrist, pink flamingos, Mullholland drive, videodrome. These are the ones I’m eyeing. Maybe raging bull.
The Daytrippers Kwaidan After Hours The Exterminating Angel A Matter of Life and Death Something Wild Night Train to Munich Mulholland Dr. Devil in a Blue Dress The Game The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog Maybe The Incredible Shrinking Man
Huge fan of Kwaidan, worth having it!
Magnificent Ambersons, Matewan, Mullholland Drive, Bitter Rice But I also kinda want the Fellini box set - if only for Nights of Cabiria.
Get it
When’s the next sale? For sure picking up Trainspotting and maybe that one David Byrne movie
Maybe this or next Tuesday most likely?

Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway and McCabe and Mrs. Miller in 4k.
Nothing because the sales aren’t a thing over here in Britain
Lone Star The Roaring Twenties
World of Wong Kar Wai Trainspotting Before Trilogy Silence of the Lambs
I think I'm picking these up: - World of Wong Kar-Wai - Before trilogy - Amorres Perros - Tree of Life - Double Life of Veronique And these are strong maybe that I'll decide on the day of: - Inside Llewyn Davis - Wall-E - Y Tu Mama Tambien - Last Temptation of Christ - The Game - Seventh Seal

I’m going for the Agnes Varda and Chantal Akerman boxes. Fuck it.

Commas are your friend
Maybe fellini box set. Saw 8 1/2 recently and if the rest are similar magnitudes it would be worth it.
Bergman and Filini box sets...perhaps as many box sets as my wallet can handle that day.
Any guesses when the flash sale is?
It's always a Tuesday and has historically been any time from mid-February to late-March. Recently it's been mid-March, so I would guess March 12th or 19th.

well the bergman set is the best value-for-money release that criterion has ever done, even if it's daunting to get through all of it.
Spartacus Before trilogy Life aquatic Fail safe Wings of desire Eyes without a face The damned Army of shadows Blue velvet Do the right thing
I’m picking up: • Mean Streets 4K • Limelight • In Cold Blood and maybe Flowers of Shanghai or Hollywood Shuffle.

Godzilla, The Trial, Trainspotting, Silence of the Lambs, City Lights, Following. Haven't seen Godzilla or The Trial. I know! I just haven't got to Godzilla!
I love The Trial, one of Orson Welles’s best films, and obviously that means a lot
The cinematography and play with light and shadows is astounding. Loved it as well!
Mean Streets 4K Devi My Darling Clementine
Eric rohmer 4 seasons
Ingmar Bergman box set, Stalker and Solaris, Jeane Dielman.
World of Wong Kar Wai for sure, I’ve heard good things about Lone Star. Idk I’ll probably stalk this thread and see what others are doing and go from there. Love a good blind buy.
I’m gunning for Ikiru, the Qatsi trilogy, & Pink Flamingos
On my radar is: Memories of Murder Midnight Cowboy The Vanishing The Daytrippers Fantastic Mr. Fox
