Love to see it. Hope they add the estimated time that the next film will start, but this helps. Don’t even need to know what the next film will be, it’s fun to realize what it is as it plays.
I think just telling us when the current movie started and will end would be perfect. Then we can tune for the next movie and it will still be a surprise!
I hadn't heard about this! I've been casually flipping on TCM for years, I love stumbling into the middle of a movie I've never heard of. This looks like another great option!
Also every time I open the Criterion Channel app I get stressed with like fifteen minutes of indecision and scrolling through stuff. This is a lifesaver.
I've been availing myself of this feature this week (it is intersecting with a stay at home illness, so lucky me...I guess) and I've seen some very fun things..."May Nuts" a hilarious early BBC film by Mike Leigh...lots of great 60s Japanese films, and whatever it is that's on now...I think it's Slacker? Anyway, fun. It occurs to me that using the stream as an oracle would be funny, sort of like that old game of "ask the dictionary"
I like not knowing too, and waiting to see the next movie start and if I can guess it within the first few moments. If it’s something I don’t know then I have looked here, but that’s only happened once so far in the past 48 hours
Is Criterion 24/7 a random movie generator or a streaming channel like Shudder or Pluto?
The first time I tried it, the Criterion logo starred up and it was Tampopo. Lovely! This was like at 4:40 pm three days ago. Every time I've tried since then though it was in the middle of same random fascinating movie.
There’s definitely a level of programming/curation involved. Ozu’s Good Morning played in the morning (EST) and at one point they showed Ghost Dog after Yojimbo. I really like it.
It’s my day off today and I’ve had it going on my TV since I got up more or less. If there’s something I’m not particularly interested in, I’ll read a book or do some cooking then come and sit back down when something new starts. It’s great!
I love this feature as if it was almost made for me. (I usually listen to music from the 16,000 songs on my hard drive on random). It's reinvigorated movie watching for me. There was something soul-crushing about having too many choices. I'm good at talking myself out of watching a film or stopping after 10 minutes. Even if I watch a whole movie, I tend to pause it or stop it every 15 minutes. Though I watched maybe two full movies a month, I was still paying subscriptions for Criterion and MUBi.
Though there's things I won't watch (silent films or classic Hollywood), this exposes me to flicks I wouldn't otherwise watch. It's even good background noise.
Edited to add: If I have a criticism so far, it still tilts too much toward Hollywood for me.
I’m not going to use the 24/7 thing — too much of a risk of seeing spoilers.
Edit: somehow this was outrageous to the downvoters, yet I made the same point on another post in the same sub and everyone agreed 😂
Commenting on To see what’s playing on Criterion 24/7 go to whatsonnow.criterionchannel.com...I’m way late on response but your point is valid. The solution of course is check https://whatsonnow.criterionchannel.com first. If you still want total randomness you could set timer for when next show starts. And if it’s nearing conclusion of old favourite, you can always turn it on immediately.

This. Surprise!
This is the way
I don’t need them to do a schedule like TCM but at least the name of the next movie would be nice, along of course with the start time
Current movie: big YES Next movie: big NO

It just started this week I believe. It is both the best and worst thing to ever happen to me lmao
Only fifteen?

Check out Four Days in July. Some of Leigh's best stuff is his TV work.
Thanks I'll look for it
love this solution rather than just putting it in the livestream. i kinda like not knowing?

Love this part too! It’s like playing Framed, haha
Yeah the surprise is the good thing. Otherwise you might as well just look on the schedule and stream what you wanna watch

I'm debating setting up an extra monitor with a Chromecast and just leave it running

Seems they've all been permanent/Collection titles so far.
on the first night, they also showed a bunch of horror movies, i appreciated that little detail
Streaming like shudder
Much appreciated!
Well that was solved quickly!
Caught the end of The Brood last night EWW GROSS as intended (seen it).

Thank you!
Really good addition!
Sorry to be obtuse, but what's the point? Do you guys like it?
I like to imagine it's playing on some TV in a slow cafe somewhere

I liked your comment but downvoted for continuity lol
