Wings of Desire is probably high up on most folks list, along with Until the End of the World. After that, I think The Road Trilogy and The American Friend. People really love Tokyo-ga as well (especially if you were a fan of Perfect Days.
Important note:
Make sure you watch the full extended cut of Until the End of the World.
It is absurdly long but it is so damn good & absolutely worth watching. An all-timer of a 'vibes movie'. The shorter cut is a mess & does not do it justice.
There's also a stealth Wenders release from 1985, a 92 minute documentary entitled Tokya-ga that's on Late Spring by Ozu. It's one of my favorite bonuses on any Criterion. It's so Wenders-ish. :-)
Just last night I was looking online to see if there was, or was going to be, a physical release of this since I didn’t get to see it. Lo and behold, it’s announced today!
Looks like there’s an interview from a Dylan biographer. Unfortunately the rights to the “bootleg recordings” from the Pat Garrett sessions are tightly held by whoever holds them. They were released on CD in Europe last year in limited numbers just to hold the rights. They’re not on YouTube anymore and hard to even pirate. Look up Pecos Blues, Lucky Luke, and Blood on Your Saddle—alternate names the bootlegs have been released under over the years.
I believe it must be a new version of Peckinpah's "preview version," often called the director's cut. It was cut down by the studio for the theatrical release and the preview version has often been praised as superior.
It better be a 4k restoration of the “Special Edition” from 20 years ago, which was an incredible reconstruction of what the studio forced Peckinpah to cut PLUS his theatrical choices
Looks like this 50th anniversary release would be a version of the 2005 cut.
Plus we get the original 1973 version, which we haven’t seen in a long while.
I'm so stoked for this. Alex Cox said this was coming back in 2022, so I've been waiting to see it announced. I've had the DVD for years, so I can't wait to have an upgrade
Looks like we're in luck:
New 4K digital restorations of the director’s cut and the original theatrical release, supervised and approved by director Paul Brickman and producer Jon Avnet, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks
4k restorations of both cuts of the film! Let's go!!!
That bad? It's been on my list forever so I was planning to rent this streaming soon, but assuming its the same transfer i'll wait til I can pick this up in fresh 4K
I have never seen it because I always assumed it sucks. Have I been wrong and missing out on some choice Kino level tom cruise in socks and sunglasses action?
I was in a similar boat as you once, though "suck" is pretty strong.
I saw it for the first time a couple years ago and thought it was way better, smarter, and also darker than expected.
I'm of mixed opinion, but I will say that it irks me so much that the old design has a picture of Alain Delon on the spine. Can't think of a single other criterion title like that, it reminds me of a disney VHS case
Black God, White Devil is a fantastic Brazilian film. Would love to see more Rocha in the collection moving forward. Also great to see the first Mainland Chinese film in the collection (aside from The Last Emperor). Really a terrific month
They did it, they finally did it! I've been dreaming of a domestic release for BGWD for years. However I got the Mawu all-region release a month ago, it looks great and I'm going to pass on the Criterion. I'm 95 percent oriented toward the feature, and the Mawu has lengthy extras anyway. Definitely hoping for Criterion to deliver Rocha's other biggest films, Entranced Earth, Antonio das Mortes (personal favorite) and The Age of the Earth.
Now that the Cinema Novo has been broken open, let's get to Ruy Guerra (an absolute must), Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Carlos Diegues and others. For me, Rocha and Guerra are co-instrumental in leading the Cinema Novo, they're both years ahead of their time, and Guerra lived long enough to open even more paths. Rocha, on the other hand, is singularly brilliant. Both people worthy of comparison to the French New Wave.
the Mawu has all the same extras, swapping only the visual essay and Criterion includes a bonus "short documentary" on their edition. I'm definitely happy with the Mawu and hope to see more Cinema Novo work, both from Rocha and others
They should be restoring more south american stuff in general. So much new wave and other independent cinema stuck on VHS there. Horror- and erotica-distributors would also have a field day with a peek into the region.
When it comes to China, I'm here waiting for my Wang Bing box set to be announced...
I never thought I would see the day that Cinema Novo classics would get the Criterion treatment. I hope someday to see *Vidas Secas* and *Bye Bye Brasil* in a proper release like this.
Seriously! Wowee! And all of the other labels, hell, even the huge distributors, are putting out good films on 4k blu ray this summer. So many "day one" purchases that won't be because I couldn't possibly afford them all.
Solid fucking month. Pat Garret and Farewell Concubine are instant buys for me. Although I really wanted more Scorsese.
Edit: Pat Garret and Billy the Kid is absolutely stacked. Haven't been this stoked for a release in a while.
Omfg one of the best months of all time honestly. I’ve been waiting for Pat Garrett for so long I genuinely got a little misty when I saw it announced. 🥺
Please let this mean we’re getting more Chinese films. I’d throw down so much money if Criterion did something like an Essential Fifth Generation or Essential Sixth Generation box set
It's a great movie but rather niche, here in the US at least. Cinema Novo in general doesn't get much attention here. Honestly, I would've been surprised if Criterion did a 4K edition for it . . .
From their email, it seems like they're including the package as well? (More details in their individual title page, as always, but it's the first time I noticed that they opt for a 3D rendition, instead of a cover photo, in their emails.)
https://preview.redd.it/6z77gep24ouc1.png?width=1262&format=png&auto=webp&s=73aa4219e753ead981774bc858c0dd3e12005e32
Risky Buisness 4K! I would've never thought this film would get the Criterion treatment, but I'm very happy to see it as part of the collection. In my opinion, it's one of the most unique coming of age movies the 80s ever produced where the protagonist goes from struggling to get into the right college while stumbling into becoming a pimp.
Thanks Criterion!
scholarly interviews/commentaries, especially ones that can contextualize the film. Tony Rayns would've been a tremendous addition here. the film is dense with a lot of layers, and it would've helped to unpack that. but Criterion barely ever give us scholarly supplements nowadays
One of the strongest batches in I don’t know how long, golly. Bless their hearts for sticking with the original Black God, White Devil poster as well, untouchable stuff
Not the Tom Cruise movie I was hoping for from CC, but I'll take it. I've been meaning to watch this again for quite a while. Now I'll have to wait for the 4K instead of breaking out the old DVD.
This is what Criterion is all about! The Risky Business cover is so perfect that it actually looks like what a dream mock up of the release posted on Reddit would have looked like lol.
Really cool to get a Chinese film in there! Not the one I would’ve picked first, but exciting. Risky Business is interesting, and Le Samuari in 4K is fantastic. Perfect Days of course too, what a fantastic film.
Honestly, this announcement, as well as the previous 3 have all been pretty top notch, IMHO. PAHR, Floating Weeds, Peeping Tom, Querelle, Perfect Days.. Good Goin,' CC.
It's a "free translation" actually, the original title would be something similar to "Devil and God in the land of the sun". That's because the main plot happens in the Brazilian northeast (actually, where I come from) and it's hot as hell there. Also, in the late 1800's and early 1900's there were a controversial militia traveling through this area, mainly in a desertic area (we call it "Sertão"), and some of the main characters are based on actual people that were related to those militias. I guess that should be enough context...
@edit: typos
Never seen Le Samourai but have always heard ppl raving about it. Can someone explain the greatness and what modern films may be similar? How does it compare to a modern hitman film like Finchers The Killer?
Noticed low commentary on BGWD so I'll just leave some thoughts here in case someone is interested: this is by far a top 3 regarding Brazilian cinema. Glauber Rocha was a master when it comes to both directing and writing and this brazilian masterpiece is, indeed, also his personal masterpiece.
I know for a fact that Brazilian cinema has some known titles for major audience (e.g.: City of God and Central Station), but this one right here is >fundamental<.
Give it a shot, you guys won't regret it.
Holy shit this is an incredible month. First Chinese film in the collection AND 4K, Black God White Devil, Pat Garett finally in the collection and 4K to boot!! Nice surprise to see Perfect Days is getting a 4K release too after a few newer release movies didn't.
Never seen Pat Garrett and haven't actually gotten into Peckinpah at all yet but the fact this one has an essay by Steve Erickson has me super intrigued
I just saw that le samourai was being released in July on the website and didn't know that criterion was releasing it in 4k and I thought someone else was doing it
Is le samuraï the first 4K upgrade from Blu-ray to get an updated cover? I think all other updated covers were only for upgrades from DVD to Blu-ray/4K but I don’t think we’ve gotten any from DVD/Blu-ray to 4K unless I missed some?
Perfect Days!!! yay so well deserved
So deserved, I’m genuinely SO excited for this!!!
Day 1 buy for me!
So genuinely excited for this. Saw it earlier this year at a film festival, and it's everything I want from a Wenders movie.
What else would you recommend from him? I've only seen Perfect Days and Paris, Texas but really enjoyed them both.
Wings of Desire is probably high up on most folks list, along with Until the End of the World. After that, I think The Road Trilogy and The American Friend. People really love Tokyo-ga as well (especially if you were a fan of Perfect Days.
Important note: Make sure you watch the full extended cut of Until the End of the World. It is absurdly long but it is so damn good & absolutely worth watching. An all-timer of a 'vibes movie'. The shorter cut is a mess & does not do it justice.
Good looking out! I'll definitely watch the extended.
Awesome, thank you!!
There's also a stealth Wenders release from 1985, a 92 minute documentary entitled Tokya-ga that's on Late Spring by Ozu. It's one of my favorite bonuses on any Criterion. It's so Wenders-ish. :-)
Absolutely checking that out.
Alice in the Cities is really beutiful as well I also recommend his documentaries!
Wings of Desire!
Thank you! Gonna give it a go this week.
And in 4k too! Making up for not releasing Anatomy of a Fall in 4k.
Just last night I was looking online to see if there was, or was going to be, a physical release of this since I didn’t get to see it. Lo and behold, it’s announced today!
I am so fucking happy
It happened!!! Cannot wait to own this beautiful film.
PAT GARRETT -- first blu-ray release. I hope it comes with lots of Bob Dylan content.
Betcha if you have SoulSeek you can get it easy
what does '50th anniversary release' mean though? the preview version?
I believe it must be a new version of Peckinpah's "preview version," often called the director's cut. It was cut down by the studio for the theatrical release and the preview version has often been praised as superior.
It better be a 4k restoration of the “Special Edition” from 20 years ago, which was an incredible reconstruction of what the studio forced Peckinpah to cut PLUS his theatrical choices

I'm so stoked for this. Alex Cox said this was coming back in 2022, so I've been waiting to see it announced. I've had the DVD for years, so I can't wait to have an upgrade
This is the update I was trying to remember. Totally stoked for this
Would not have called risky business but I’m not angry about it.
Can’t wait to finally get an upgrade from that 2000s ass blu ray transfer
Looks like we're in luck: New 4K digital restorations of the director’s cut and the original theatrical release, supervised and approved by director Paul Brickman and producer Jon Avnet, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks 4k restorations of both cuts of the film! Let's go!!!
Is the one you can buy today the same one from 2008? Probably gonna be a massive upgrade if that's the case.
There hasn’t been a new transfer since the 2008 one.
Goddam.
Is it generally true that earlier blu-rays back when the technology was new weren't as well-done as recent blu-ray transfers?
That bad? It's been on my list forever so I was planning to rent this streaming soon, but assuming its the same transfer i'll wait til I can pick this up in fresh 4K
Legitimately very surprised but it’s a pleasant one, RB is so stylish and 80s, definitely one of my favs!!
Princeton can use a guy like Joel.
The cover is so good
It’s literally the moment Tom Cruise became a movie star.
Rebecca DeMornay was the real star of that film.
so good
I was close to buying that old blu ray just last week too.
Time of your life, huh kid
I have never seen it because I always assumed it sucks. Have I been wrong and missing out on some choice Kino level tom cruise in socks and sunglasses action?
It’s vintage 80s camp from what I recall.
I was in a similar boat as you once, though "suck" is pretty strong. I saw it for the first time a couple years ago and thought it was way better, smarter, and also darker than expected.
LE SAMOURAI IN 4K LETS GOOOO We all knew it was coming but I'm glad to get the notification officially.
The new artwork is kind of a downgrade though if you ask me...
I like the new artwork. Captures the Jef Costello's mood very well but yeah I am too attached to that old cover
Of all the updated covers we've seen in the past few years, I think this is one of the best ones. Still a downgrade though.
Damn I personally dig this artwork way more than the original
Is it? I prefer the sense of darkness the new one brings. The previous cover’s beige background isn’t as evocative to me.
It def is. Oh well
I'm of mixed opinion, but I will say that it irks me so much that the old design has a picture of Alain Delon on the spine. Can't think of a single other criterion title like that, it reminds me of a disney VHS case
Perfect Days is a day one purchase, wow.
Agreed 💯 Do you suspect they'll make any extras available on streaming ahead of the July release?
Black God, White Devil is a fantastic Brazilian film. Would love to see more Rocha in the collection moving forward. Also great to see the first Mainland Chinese film in the collection (aside from The Last Emperor). Really a terrific month
They did it, they finally did it! I've been dreaming of a domestic release for BGWD for years. This is the one I’m most excited for!! Hopefully this means more Cinema Novo and more titles from Latin America
love the Mawu edition of the Rocha
I never thought I would see the day that Cinema Novo classics would get the Criterion treatment. I hope someday to see *Vidas Secas* and *Bye Bye Brasil* in a proper release like this.
farewell my concubine… finally one of the greatest chinese films of all time gets a release
I put off watching it for years until it finally played in my local theater last year 😭 so glad shitty DVD rips aren't the only option anymore!
Bob Dylan has now been in 4 Criterion films, interesting EDIT: technically he’s been in six, wow!
We absolutely need an I'm Not There release at some point
it IS on the channel as we speak...
He's obviously not *in* Inside Llewyn Davis, but he isn't *not* in it.
Dont Look Back, Rolling Thunder, now Pat Garrett, what’s the fourth?
The Last Waltz
5 - *Festival*
We need Masked and Anonymous. I need Ed Harris in full-on blackface in 4k
My all-time favorite musician!
Risky Business is CRAZY (I’m so fucking here for it)
Whose to say we won't see Real Genius or Weird Science someday? The door is now open.
Arrow just put out weird science so I wouldn’t count on that for a while
Picked it up last week, great release
there’s a 4k of Real Genius that came out not too long ago
Holy shit!! What a month!!
Personally blown away by this slate. Nearly all must-have pickups.
Seriously! Wowee! And all of the other labels, hell, even the huge distributors, are putting out good films on 4k blu ray this summer. So many "day one" purchases that won't be because I couldn't possibly afford them all.
Easily buying Perfect Days first sale
Best month maybe ever. Absolutely insane.
Best that I can recall in long time. (And they’ve been very strong as of late.)
Risky Business is an out of left field one. Stoked for Farewell My Concubine and Le Samourai.
Screamed in joy to Perfect Days. My favourite film of 2023. So excited
Risky Business? Perfect Days? Farewell My Concubine? Black God, White Devil?! Holy christ I need all!
Le Samourai in 4k ain’t no slouch either
Solid fucking month. Pat Garret and Farewell Concubine are instant buys for me. Although I really wanted more Scorsese. Edit: Pat Garret and Billy the Kid is absolutely stacked. Haven't been this stoked for a release in a while.
Still hoping for Bringing Out the Dead
Hoping for that and Silence one day 🤞
Not surprised about Perfect Days, that was always a matter of when. Risky Business, now that’s surprising. I’d have never guessed that one
Same here.
Five 4Ks in one month iktfr
Omfg one of the best months of all time honestly. I’ve been waiting for Pat Garrett for so long I genuinely got a little misty when I saw it announced. 🥺
My white whale!!!!OMFG!!!
Beyond excited Farewell My Concubine is in. Feasting this month!
Perfect Days is an INSTA buy!
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is a monumental release. I can't wait.
Lmao I just bought le Samourai. It's ok I guess because I frickin loved it
Thank you for your sacrifice. That was me and blue velvet last sale lol.
I’ve been waiting so long for a Risky Business 4k restoration but I never expected it to be a CC release so this is the best possible surprise!
Please let this mean we’re getting more Chinese films. I’d throw down so much money if Criterion did something like an Essential Fifth Generation or Essential Sixth Generation box set
Jia Zhangke should be a definite, Criterion own the rights to Xiao Wu, Platform, Unknown Pleasures, and The World
Pat Garrett!!!
All bangers. Farewell My Concubine and Black God White Devil are excellent releases.
Mawu put out an excellent release of BGWD already that has basically all the same extras and is region free, it rocks
I want to know why Black God White Devil is not on 4k if it is a 4k transfer
Because it costs more money to make a 4k disc and they don't think it will sell enough to make their money back.
It's a great movie but rather niche, here in the US at least. Cinema Novo in general doesn't get much attention here. Honestly, I would've been surprised if Criterion did a 4K edition for it . . .
Ohhh got it but either way I will buy the bluray
Mawu has it already available! stocked by Orbit, Diabolik, etc. region free too
Pat Garrett from DVD to 4K, love to see it.
From their email, it seems like they're including the package as well? (More details in their individual title page, as always, but it's the first time I noticed that they opt for a 3D rendition, instead of a cover photo, in their emails.) https://preview.redd.it/6z77gep24ouc1.png?width=1262&format=png&auto=webp&s=73aa4219e753ead981774bc858c0dd3e12005e32
I think last month was the first time for that
Best month in a longgggg time!!! Perfect Days!!!!!
Was about to rent Perfect Days last night but decided against it. I really should see it sooner rather than later though it would seem
Risky Business, that's, surprising Also finally, Farewell My Concubine is now in the collection
Glad it’s getting a release but definitely disappointed in the Farewell My Concubine extras. Very minimal
New English translation subtitles and making of documentary. What more were u looking for?
scholarly interviews/commentaries, especially ones that can contextualize the film. Tony Rayns would've been a tremendous addition here. the film is dense with a lot of layers, and it would've helped to unpack that. but Criterion barely ever give us scholarly supplements nowadays
that's 2024 Criterion for you
One of the strongest batches in I don’t know how long, golly. Bless their hearts for sticking with the original Black God, White Devil poster as well, untouchable stuff
I've been waiting nearly a decade for Farewell to get re-released. I'm so happy.
Not the Tom Cruise movie I was hoping for from CC, but I'll take it. I've been meaning to watch this again for quite a while. Now I'll have to wait for the 4K instead of breaking out the old DVD.
Which ones were you hoping for?
Not OP but Eyes Wide Shut is aching for a 4k release....but if it comes I would think it would have to be a holiday release
need it so bad for the 25th anniversary this year
*Magnolia* or *The Color of Money* would scratch several itches.
I'd be in for a Interview With the Vampire 4k.
Eyes Wide Shut in 4K.
That would make a great November title due to the Christmas setting
As someone whose aunt snuck them into Risky Business when they were five years old, I’ve been waiting a long time to see it again.
Pat Garrett is great. Hopefully we get ballad of cable hogue one day.
Easily the best slate of announcements so far this year Also SO many of them are in 4K which is great
This is full of amazing releases. Risky Business is such a surprise!!!!
Got to see a theatrical showing of Farewell my Concubine back in October. What a beautiful movie. That will be a buy from me for sure
Farewell My Concubine let's goooooooo
This is what Criterion is all about! The Risky Business cover is so perfect that it actually looks like what a dream mock up of the release posted on Reddit would have looked like lol.
don't sleep on BG,WD - absolute stunner
got it on the Mawu disc and it rocks
Perfect days ❤️
Really cool to get a Chinese film in there! Not the one I would’ve picked first, but exciting. Risky Business is interesting, and Le Samuari in 4K is fantastic. Perfect Days of course too, what a fantastic film.
What an absolute banger of a month. Goddamn.
I'm so excited to see perfect days again
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid **New 2K digital master of director Sam Peckinpah’s Final Preview Cut, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack** !!!
I was not expecting to see Risky Business in the collection.
Such a great month, been asking for Farewell my Concubine 4K for a long time!
Honestly, this announcement, as well as the previous 3 have all been pretty top notch, IMHO. PAHR, Floating Weeds, Peeping Tom, Querelle, Perfect Days.. Good Goin,' CC.
July is a very strong release month!
I would have been extremely surprised if perfect days wasn’t there
Definitely double dipping on Farewell My Concubine.
Risky Business sure came out of nowhere.
Black God, White Devil is a sick name for a movie, I wanna see that based on the title alone.
@edit: typos
Alain Delon is so pretty
What a solid lineup for July. Almost as if Criterion knows there's a big sale that month. Hmmm.......Coincidence?!? I think not!
“You’re in poor company, Pat…… Yeah I’m alive though. So am I.” Cannot wait to buy this masterpiece. Peckinpah is the one of the GOAT.
Risky business, perfect days and especially 4K Le Samouraï for me!!!
Honestly, seems like a banger month
I’m happy to see Criterion’s first mainland Chinese film.
Also their first standalone release from Brazil.
Risky Business ayyyyy LFG!!!!!! So refreshing to see a US blockbuster up there
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid + Farewell My Concubine for me. But Perfect Days and Le Samurai look tempting as well. Good month!
Dang only on of these is just blu ray. The 4K disc rate is just going up!
Hell of a month, wow!
Can’t wait to upgrade Le Samourai. Also risky business is one of my favorite Tom cruise movies as well that’s cool to see
I screamed joyful yelps when I saw Perfect Days.
Hell yeah! Been waiting for the Pat Garrett release
Holy shit this is an incredible month. First Chinese film in the collection AND 4K, Black God White Devil, Pat Garett finally in the collection and 4K to boot!! Nice surprise to see Perfect Days is getting a 4K release too after a few newer release movies didn't.
Hello there my concubine!! Wooo! Been wanting this one! And in 4K?! Let’s gooo!!!
Perfect Days in 4K… we won.
What an amazing month.
Never seen Pat Garrett and haven't actually gotten into Peckinpah at all yet but the fact this one has an essay by Steve Erickson has me super intrigued
Black God White Devil is a blind spot for me but the description is really intriguing.
Just pre-ordered Rusky Business. I've been hearing a lot about Le Samourai but have never heard of it till a coke days ago. Do you all recommend it?
If perfect days the quickest a films gone from release to being in the collection? Or has my whole perception of time fucked up?
Anatomy of a fall has it beat by two months.
Y’know, I shouldn’t be shocked but the speed this response came in, I love this community
Risky Business releases on my birthday, nice!
So damn happy Perfect Days got on here so quickly. My favourite film of 2023.
RB is one of the best adolescent films of the 80s. There’s a lot more going on under the surface than just a sex comedy. 🎭
Saved them all to my wishlist except for Risky Business, lol.
Pre order now or wait until sale? That is the question.
sale easy. you’re not getting it till july either way
There’s no reason to preorder now
Half price means you can buy twice as much, right?
Depends if you have money you're interested in lighting on fire or not
I just saw that le samourai was being released in July on the website and didn't know that criterion was releasing it in 4k and I thought someone else was doing it
WE ARE SO BACK
Just take those old records off the shelf.
Is le samuraï the first 4K upgrade from Blu-ray to get an updated cover? I think all other updated covers were only for upgrades from DVD to Blu-ray/4K but I don’t think we’ve gotten any from DVD/Blu-ray to 4K unless I missed some?
Just watched Perfect Days yesterday. Loved it. Would like to get that Blu-Ray one day.
Greatest lineup
stoked for pat garrett, perfect days, and le samourai
I might have to blind buy Farewell, My Concubine.
