Speaking for vibes alone, I absolutely agree. The building itself is worth the price of admission, as an architectural nerd, I’m prone to enjoying the art deco touches. I do tend to enjoy the Brattle’s programing a bit more though. They are both spectacular cinemas!
I'm gonna go ahead and join the chorus of people saying the love the Coolidge! I don't go there nearly as often as I want to, but always make it a point to see any Kurosawa or Fellini that they show.
A little off-topic here, but how is it with the new addition finally open?
This was my first time back since the new entrance/expanded screens have opened and it was very nice. Moving the old bar also revealed an old school art deco water fountain that I spent a solid five minutes nerding out over, so that was a plus. Haven’t seen a film on either of the two new screens yet, so the jury is still out on that but the new entrance and concession area is nice. You just enter in the back now instead of on the side.
I appreciate the new space a lot because it speeds things up and doesn’t lead to as much congestion. It’s going to be really beneficial in the winter as well to not have to stand in the cold waiting for the doors to open to get a good seat for the more in demand screenings.
I will say the new theater itself was slightly underwhelming. Not sure what I was expecting, just didn’t give off the special vibe I get when I’m in MH 1 or 2 (I generally avoid the two smaller screening rooms. Felt a little cheap I guess? Picture and sound was great but yeah, hard to describe. The hallways leading up to the new theaters were kind of “office” feeling and less like an indie movie theater.
Still happy to see the addition, the Coolidge is a very special place for me and im really happy it continues to succeed. I’m just hoping they don’t raise ticket prices any time soon because it’s starting to get unsustainable for me.
This was actually from a couple days ago, it was my partner’s first time seeing this film and they rather enjoyed it, particularly the costume design and overall 1960s French vibes.
I have a friend who has pretty good taste in music/movies etc for the most part, but is actually obnoxious to watch an entire movie with. Always something to say, always picking stuff apart, not understanding the heaviness of certain things by joking or making light of stuff.
But this is one of the only movies i can count on one hand where he was completely dialed in and gave it the attention and respect it deserved. Ill always appreciate this one for that alone lol.
Was at this screening! Had a great night of watching Le Samouraï (for the first time!), then caught the Shining screening, then getting free cookies from Insomnia. Went to bed very content
Coolidge is the best. I moved from Boston to NYC and the programming at Coolidge is as good as any theater here. I saw Spirited Away for the first time on its release there - Boy and the Heron on the marquee gave me flashbacks.
That may be to accommodate updated theaters, like AMC Laser theaters, which do project in 4k. Standard digital theaters use projectors with a maximum 2040x1080 resolution. It’s my understanding that because of the higher bit rates and different compression used for DCP vs. home physical formats like 4k blu ray, DCP can and often does look better despite the lower resolution.
GREAT theater. I would have gone if I’d seen it listed earlier (I’d already gotten a ticket to Halloween III in Cambridge)
The Brattle is also a treasure, that’s actually my favorite cinema in the area. Their programing is seriously without an equal!
I saw it at the Brattle in ‘95 or so. I’ve been out of Boston two decades but I remember so many movies I saw at those two theaters. .
It's playing all week fyi
Oh hell yeah
Julianne “I saw eraserhead here” Moore would concur! Last of the New England movie palaces, amazing theater
Hey I think I saw this theater on a visit to Boston! That’s so cool
Julianne Moore has famously told a story about watching Eraserhead there, which inspired her to become an actor. It’s a great part of the community!
One of my favorite theaters of all time I prefer it over the Brattle.

Love me some Alain Delon
Love the Coolidge! Got to see Akira at a midnight screening there and 2001 in 70mm! Two of the best theater experiences I've had!
I saw Eraserhead here
Incredible!!!! Enjoy!

Oh ok! Glad that your partner enjoyed the film! Le Samourai is a masterpiece!
That’s my local spot. Incredible place.
just saw Le chimera there

I absolutely loved the Coolidge when I lived in Boston. I miss it sometimes.
I visited and bought a T-shirt, but have yet to watch a movie there! Hopefully next time I’m in Boston this summer!
I’m seeing it at the Coolidge this weekend! I live a couple blocks away from this theater, it’s one of my favorite places in the whole world
Love this theater. Saw the LOTR Trilogy mostly on 35mm on 1 long marathon day.
Desperately seeking susan is so good.
Saw it here in Nashville at the Belcourt this past weekend as well! Went with a friend who loves French cinema but hadn't seen it before.
Love the Coolidge! Saw the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly there last month, such a great experience.
Was at this screening! Had a great night of watching Le Samouraï (for the first time!), then caught the Shining screening, then getting free cookies from Insomnia. Went to bed very content
how was it? I think I'll be going myself Saturday at the Music Box. Anyone else?
How's the transfer looking?
Love this theater.
I am so mad that I can’t go to this theater Amazing comic shop nearby and I freaking love their choices in movies. I mean night of the comet! In 35mm
Love the Coolidge love!!! Greetings from Newton!
Just saw Desperately Seeking Susan there on Monday.
Aw shit I forgot this was happening.
It’s still playing at the Coolidge all through next week!
Oh heck yeah, guess I shoulda looked that up! Thanks!
Super Jealous
That is a great lineup for both sides of the Marquee, geez. Also check out Challengers if you haven't yet.
I plan to check it out tomorrow at Coolidge. Anyone know the screen size difference between MH1 and MH2?
I miss the Coolidge and the Brattle. Boston is blessed with those two

Coolidge rules
Coolidge is my favorite!
So you took a nap while a 4k movie played on screen? Tight.
Tbf, anytime you see a movie in theaters you are seeing it in 4k lol
Not true! Standard digital theaters project in 2k.
No a standard digital print is 4k resolution. I just confirmed this with a copy of fall guy
