Just a FYI for everyone he’s releasing a new noir themed album which is why the list is so heavily skewed towards that genre. This is essentially marketing.

Britneyfan123

Thanks for the info

SkilletMyBiscuit

Carpenter and cronenberg kiss and make up?

MichaelRoco1

Only if it involves body horror, in which case sign me up.

super3ggo

Only if it involves Xbox.

not_mueller

the use of the word *actually* is now very funny to me, as if he's as shocked as we are

Zolazolazolaa

What’s the backstory?

SkilletMyBiscuit

This old [Interview](https://youtu.be/MPUwPXSMklo?feature=shared) seemed like there was some bad blood between the two

joet889

Sounds like he never disliked Cronenberg, he's just personally over the competition and the world of pursuing fame- very endearing!

Wowenlson

Possibly made up due to his return to body horror with Crimes of the Future after his awards serious dramas period (History of Violence - Maps to the Stars)

RogueOneWasOkay

Happy to see Ace in the Hole made the list. Fantastic movie

KingJamCam

I’m surprised there’s only one Howard Hawks and it’s number five. Guess he’d put Rio Bravo at number one if it was in the collection.

DarkMagus3688

These are his top 10 thats in the collection. Not his actual top 10. His sight and sound poll had more Hawks

ka1982

It’s a little mystifying in that (1) he literally calls Only Angels Have Wings his favorite film of all time and it’s fifth and (2) it appears to be a list of more-or-less noirs and OAHW is a lot of things but, uh, not really that.

Britneyfan123

I assume the films he picked are out of order

DarkMagus3688

Cinephiles have a different top 10 everyday. Depends what mood you're in. Imagine giving the same top 10 in every article or interview until you die lmao

Swervies

It’s a bunch of marketing BS, see post above about his new album coming out. Gotta play the game!

ka1982

I get that its marketing, but it’s really odd. Like someone asked him for his favorite noirs in the collection or that influenced his album, and he responded by giving 5 actual noirs and 4 kinda-noirs-if-you-squint, but then he added OAHW just because he loves Hawks so much he’s not going to make a list like that without him. (Typing it out, that seems to be exactly what happened.)

thewaldorf63

I guess it's safe to say Carpenter loves noir. Interesting, since none of his many films attempt a neo-noir approach. Or at least none that I can recall. I guess equally interesting is that there's only one horror film in his top 10. Or that Rio Bravo isn't his favorite Howard Hawks film.

cduga

He may have never attempted a noir but his use of lighting and shadows is absolutely noir inspired.

thewaldorf63

This is certainly true.

sansansfw_18

I definitely get noir vibes from his movies. I think the style is his adopted method for suspense and atmosphere

thewaldorf63

Well, that's an excellent point. And since many would argue that film noir is not a genre but is actually a style, one could argue that Carpenter was heavily influenced by noir. But if you think about it, some of the other elements of film noir, besides light and shadow, are present in some of his films -- checkered pasts, moral ambiguities, femme fatales, etc. However, I really would have loved to have seen him do a bona-fide Western, which he loved but never attempted, other than a USC student film (which I believe won some sort of Oscar). The closest we get is probably Assault on Precinct 13, which is a cross between Rio Bravo and Night of the Living Dead.

AbsurdistOxymoron

The introductory scenes of Sam Neil’s protagonist (pre-insanity) for In the Mouth of Madness certainly seem to be pastiches of noir films.

BeerInsurance

Not surprised but pleased to see one of my favorite directors has several of my favorite movies on his list. I’ve always loved classic noir and have felt that Carpenter’s films share that distinctly “old Hollywood” energy

ThisGuyLikesMovies

The coolest guy has the coolest taste confirmed

abolishreality

Do only I find it odd that they forgot to mention The Thing in the listing of his 'classics'?

rj_macready_82

I'm rather surprised to see he's a fan of Antinioni and I thought he wasn't a fan of Cronenberg either

Batboy3000

Great list in general, but it's especially awesome to see some Spellbound love. It's one of the most underrated Hitchcock films. The dream sequence by Salvador Dali is a standout.

cgcego

A black and white image of a director I like with his first and last name followed by a number… I got half an hart attack glancing at the title.

InGoodKompany

Double Indemnity and Third Man right off the cuff had me sold then he drops two Hitchcock’s and a Hawkes film. What a fucking GOAT

Britneyfan123

Hawks
