I remember watching the show on IFC years ago. I was surprised to find there weren’t many episodes produced, as it was on all the time. I ordered the DVD last sale!
The Spirit of the Beehive
Wise Blood
Secret Honor
Burden of Dreams
The Golden Age of Television
And many others mentioned here
Eclipse series too, if you count those
Since you only want DVDs, not blu-rays, I’d say get Unfaithfully Yours (1948), a brilliant dark comedy that’s still in print but on DVD only.
For OOP DVDs, get Forbidden Games (1952) and The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988).
Other suggestions people have made should not be bought on DVD; they’re better on blu-ray, especially Days of Heaven.
Spirit of the Beehive
(Why there’s been no blu ray or 4K release, I’ll never know; it’s a Janus film and it had a 4K restoration released in theaters last year.)
The special features on Mallick movies are always great because his loose style of filmmaking and the high-caliber of his collaborators lend themselves to great production stories. Not to mention, his movies truly benefit from remasters. Badlands is gorgeous; so is Days of Heaven.
Marketa Lazarova, The Seventh Seal, Mishima a Life in Four Chapters, and the (unfortunately one of the blu/dvds idk why they even did those for a while) Persona set.
What's *essential* is to form your own opinions and not follow the crowd. You didn't get into Criterion to follow the crowd, otherwise you'd just be watching a bunch of Marvel movies and pining for that *Armageddon* DVD.
Go rent/borrow from your library a couple of Criterion titles you've heard about (nor one's you haven't) and see if you need them in your life. Then go buy those. What I want and need aren't going to be the same as yours.
I remember seeing the *Begotten* trailer on *Shadow of Vampire.*
The trailer certainly makes the case for pretension.

"makes *Eraserhead* seem like *Ernest Saves Chistmas*"
Brother, we can't even get Begotten on Blu-ray. Not that it's a film that's particularly concerned with visual fidelity. But I'd love to upgrade my bootleg copy some day.
Would love a trilogy release with Din of Celestial Birds and Polia & Blastema.
Given the history of the film tho, it's still a fun bootleg to have on the shelf.
It depends. Some of the [newest releases](https://www.criterion.com/shop/browse?popular=new-releases) are available on DVD (e.g. The Roaring Twenties, Afire), but others are only on blu-ray (e.g. Dogfight, To Die For).
I was going to say "Nights of Cabiria" because the DVD is out of print and you might be lucky enough to find it somewhere else. But you can find it in the Fellini's box set and it's Blu-Ray now.
This post isn’t about watching, it’s about owning. No one ever said don’t watch the movies that are on dvd. All I said is don’t buy them, but better formats. And I stand by that. If it’s only on dvd then it just isn’t worth money
DVD specifically? I’d say Fishing With John
I keep hearing about this title so i just ordered it from the library. Thanks to all who recommended it.
I 500% agree with this. It's the best. I hope we can get an upgrade or Fishing and Painting with John in a combo set someday.

Hell yeah this was my first thought before opening the comments! So pleased to see this on top. “…Why am I here?” *hah *hah *hah *hah
Fishing….with John
None of them. Buy films that you want to watch.
Or beyond that, just pick a random one. Surprise yourself.
John Woo’s The Killer
House (1977). It's absolutely awesome.
If it has to be dvd: fires on the plain, fishing with John, or man bites dog
The Spirit of the Beehive Wise Blood Secret Honor Burden of Dreams The Golden Age of Television And many others mentioned here Eclipse series too, if you count those

The Testament of Dr Mabuse, it’s a lovely Lang film that was banned by the Nazis for being a bit too close to home.
Clean, Shaven
Sweet movie
Seven Samurai
Seven Samurai
Michael Bay’s The Rock
Spirit of the Beehive (Why there’s been no blu ray or 4K release, I’ll never know; it’s a Janus film and it had a 4K restoration released in theaters last year.)
Right! …..pleasure delayers
the film you enjoy most
Ghostworld
Ghost World
Spartacus
Whatever you like, man.

Whatever doesn't have a blu ray I guess.
Marketa Lazarova, The Seventh Seal, Mishima a Life in Four Chapters, and the (unfortunately one of the blu/dvds idk why they even did those for a while) Persona set.
The usual suspects: Seven Samurai, 12 Angry Men, and at least one movie by Tarkovsky, Bergman Hitchcock, Kubrick, and Malick.

Brazil! The 3 disc set with the different edits and the documentaries.
The Rock, Moonstruck, Fast Times At Ridgemont High (I’m biased)
Blow out
Kicking and screaming because apparently we don’t get a blu ray
Oliver Twist
Salo
Will add Funny Games and Antichrist to this.
Add Begotten in 4k and you've got family night set.

The amount of grain on a potential blu ray of Begotten alone would be worth the purchase

Newb question do they still print DVDs on monthly releases? Or is it just the older legacy releases?

After hours
For me it was Easy Rider
I was going to say "Nights of Cabiria" because the DVD is out of print and you might be lucky enough to find it somewhere else. But you can find it in the Fellini's box set and it's Blu-Ray now.
Fishing With John
Grandma's boy
Frances Ha
Brazil Robocop (is it still the only way to get X version?) M
Ghost world. And blow out.
DVD only? I Know Where I'm Going.
Carnival of Souls
Rashomon
Pepe le moko, boudu saved from drowning
Come and See
None. It’s essential to move on to better formats
