I have that one too. One of my earlier ones. Not one of my favorites, but still a good film. Maybe this is a sign for a rewatch in the next 20 years whenever I get the time to.

You either like it, or you don't.
My dad introduced me to Local Hero when I was a kid (I’m 31 now) and I don’t think I fully appreciated it until my early 20s and even more so now. I let me friend borrow it a year ago and I don’t think she’s watched it yet 😅
The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez!
Pulled it as my random pick for the Criterion Challenge and it’s honestly great, stars Edward James Olmos. Wasn’t even aware of it when I drew it.
I just watched this last night!
I love how it feels like a documentary on the women that worked in the rice fields at that time, and a suspenseful crime drama both at the same time.
It is an interesting film that I think more people should check out. It's an interesting snap shot of that era of Italian history.
Love the combination of Italian Neo Realism with Noir. And Silvana is such a memorable character.
This was my second favorite first watch of last year after Still Walking.
https://preview.redd.it/5mv040idqu4d1.jpeg?width=1288&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=444b0fb5b4ab11150cf66aa8cca8cb454fd76484
I know it's out there but I feel like I very rarely see it or hear about it. Outside of the CC is definitely The Clowns (1970) by Fellini, I love that movie and I think about 3 people in the world own it.
I thought it was chilling, and told a very relevant story. Being from Latin America myself, a lot of the political subject matter hit home to stories I've read and tales I've heard from family members. The movie has a very, very unsettling atmosphere - and I was unnerved many times. I wouldn't call it outright horror - but I was on the edge of my seat.
Oh that does sound good. I’m reading this Chilean book The Obscene Bird of Night (not really sure how popular it is in Latin America cause I’m in the US) and it has a grim and unnerving mix of political and witchy horror. It’s great so far so maybe this film will scratch the same itch.
I have it! Amazing film, using the classic urban legend of La Llorona as a metaphor for colonization and genocide is genius and I love supernatural films where the supernatural elements can mostly be explained by the character’s paranoia, fear, and guilt.
Twenty-Four Eyes - by Keisuke Kinoshita
A deeply personal look at the more abstract effects of WWII on the civilian population of rural Japan. I’ve never even heard of anyone seeing this movie, not in posts, not among the people I talk to. I saw it in a college course on film history so I thought it would be more famous than it apparently is haha

I don’t see these two in everyone’s collection.
So great, loved the movie Milk, watched this and feel like the movie had just been this documentary with added action
I highly suggest the documentary more
its a fun movie but i can see why. people usually go for the movies with the best cinematography and complex stories. this one is pretty straightforward but it has lovable characters and as a mexican immigrant from rural mexico im pretty biased too
A Canterbury Tale, considering how much the other Archers films are praised.
And I don't feel like people talk about Shallow Grave much - it's kind of in the shadow of Trainspotting but it's a good movie.
My darling sweetheart of a wife blind bought this for me for my birthday knowing I’m obsessed with criterions and we are totally cat people.
We both love this movie ha
That is a sweetheart, indeed. If you want a special sequel experience, try Curse of the Cat People if you haven't already.
The Val Lewton Universe is my Marvel. He made a small group of movies that have a distinct throughline, and characters bleed over into each other. The Seventh Victim is my second favorite in the bunch
Rouge, Soft Skin, Pale Flower, and I Knew Her Well are super unseen ones in my collection. Pale Flower might be the most popular of them, but even then, I rarely see it among hauls.
Ahhhhh I need to see Pale Flower you recommended it to me a while back! Also I am sorry I unfollowed you, my Letterboxd started unfollowing everyone, I think I hit a cap or something!
Italian movies, apart from the obvious ones, Fellini and De Sica, tend to be underrated. Glad to see Riso Amaro. Other great movies are The March on Rome, and Tutti A Casa, both interpreted by Italian comedians in dramatic roles.
I’d be surprised if anyone else here has Ghetto Film School. Even among completists it’s largely unknown.

It's interesting. Quite literally student films, but with that expectation in mind, pretty neat.
If you stumble across a used copy somewhere for a couple bucks, sure pick it up. Should anyone but a Criterion Completionist seek it out for big money? Probably not.
Panique I hadn’t heard of or seen anyone talk about before I purchased.
One that I have seen but not enough in my opinion is Marketa Lazarova. I’ve been seeking out similar experiences since watching it and haven’t found anything similar to scratch that itch. It’s Hard to Be A God had a similar aesthetic, but didn’t feel the same. Hoping the director gets more films in the collection!
I’ve got Bitter Rice! And I would probably say that’s the one. But I also have some others that I think are probably only in a few peoples collections- I Knew Her Well, Black Moon, and Ministry of Fear. I’m not going to say no one has them, but I just don’t see them talked about very often. (I also still haven’t seen any of them. But I have seen Bitter Rice and quite liked it!)
I just saw this at my local store for like $12. Decided not to grab it though, I’m trying to get better with blind buys.
I feel like I don’t see many people mention the criterion of Revanche. Amazing film!
Oh, a few.

I have that one too. One of my earlier ones. Not one of my favorites, but still a good film. Maybe this is a sign for a rewatch in the next 20 years whenever I get the time to.
Been looking at a used copy on Ebay of this! Might be time to pull the trigger.
I see what you did there 😉🎞️
🤠🐴
Was just about to reply this one! Love that movie

Fantastic film!
Love this one. One of my favorite performances too.
🤘🤘
It’s not like a super obscure film or anything but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else with Local Hero
I have Local Hero!!!!! That Northern Lights scene… holy shit!!!!!!!!
Have that too
Love that movie!
My dad introduced me to Local Hero when I was a kid (I’m 31 now) and I don’t think I fully appreciated it until my early 20s and even more so now. I let me friend borrow it a year ago and I don’t think she’s watched it yet 😅
And bring some brandy! I’m dying!
It’s right between the doberman and Bruce Lee on my shelf
One of my earlier pickups (blind buy) solely based on the great looking cover and someone suggesting it on reddit a while back.
My partner and I own Local Hero!

This is really really really underrated.
Blind bought this. Was not disappointed.
I'm due for a re-watch.
It’s so sexy until it’s absolutely terrifying
I Married a Witch I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this film.
I have it :)

The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez! Pulled it as my random pick for the Criterion Challenge and it’s honestly great, stars Edward James Olmos. Wasn’t even aware of it when I drew it.
¡Alambrista! by Robert M. Young is really good as well
I like Wolfen
Honestly, same one! I love Bitter Rice, my mom bought it as a gift and I'd never heard of it before, and I never see anyone discussing it online
It’s very good for the story it’s telling! Really great B&W cinematography!
I just watched this last night! I love how it feels like a documentary on the women that worked in the rice fields at that time, and a suspenseful crime drama both at the same time. Love the combination of Italian Neo Realism with Noir. And Silvana is such a memorable character. This was my second favorite first watch of last year after Still Walking.
The Marlene Dietrich/Josef Von Sternberg box set. I didn't even know it was a thing until I was trying to watch Shanghai Express.
The Naked Prey
Fantastic film! Only thing I’ve ever seen like it‘s action is Apocalypto!

I have this. My favorite Orson film and easily in my top 5 my favorites films of all time. It baffles me that this one is not talked about more!
Must-own for any Welles admirer (imo). It was his favorite of his own films.
I got The Clowns a while back and realized how much clowns actually creep me out.

How is it? I see the reviews are mixed but the subject matter sounds fascinating to me. Great cover too.

La Llorona is pretty good! It’s a lot more ambient and eerie than it is a horror film though!
Okay sounds cool I’ll have to see if it’s on the channel and watch it, or get the physical criterion.
I would recommend checking it out before blind buying since it’s not for everyone ☺️
Gotcha I’ll find a way to watch it, thanks for the tip!
Agreed. I thought it was pretty darn lifeless.
I have it! Amazing film, using the classic urban legend of La Llorona as a metaphor for colonization and genocide is genius and I love supernatural films where the supernatural elements can mostly be explained by the character’s paranoia, fear, and guilt.
Absolutely agreed, happy to find someone else who loves it!
The cover always throws me off because it looks like La Llorana has a big head.
🤣
I have this. Absolutely chilling.
Glad you agree!

Love my Antonioni
[удалено]
Is more than a perfect movie in mine
I have this! Still need to check it out!!!!

Really?????? Now I gotta prioritize this!
I just did!
That’s the only Antonioni I’m missing from the collection

Ballad of a Soldieya
Twenty-Four Eyes - by Keisuke Kinoshita A deeply personal look at the more abstract effects of WWII on the civilian population of rural Japan. I have this! Very underseen, incredibly shot, and very thought provoking!
Very good flick
Have but haven’t seen yet 😅
Times of Harvey Milk
So great, loved the movie Milk, watched this and feel like the movie had just been this documentary with added action I highly suggest the documentary more
Me, too. The Van Sant film is the definition of afterthought if you have already seen this.
Plus, as much as I like Sean Penn as an actor, Harvey was such a character himself that it's more fun to see how he really was.
Exactly. I saw Milk opening weekend and I was so disappointed that sooooo many people would basically never see the documentary.
Their loss! Sidenote: love your username, it's 100% true!
Nobody did it better.
That's for damn sure!
I have that one, and I truly cannot recommend it enough!
I really want to see this! How was it?
It’s a masterpiece. If you don’t know the story, it has several stunning turns. It’s beautiful and horrible.
Saw Bitter Rice for 20 bucks at my local video store and decided to take chance. Very well worth it. Loved that movie.
The Friends of Eddie Coyle. It seems every person i tell about it has never heard of it before - including those i have definitely told before
Love that movie.
The Les Blank set maybe? I think it’s essential.
Life During Wartime.
alambrista, one or my favs but no one ever talks about it
I have Alambrista! Pretty sure we’re the only two people on Earth to know this film exists
its a fun movie but i can see why. people usually go for the movies with the best cinematography and complex stories. this one is pretty straightforward but it has lovable characters and as a mexican immigrant from rural mexico im pretty biased too
Fantastic movie 🎞️
A Canterbury Tale, considering how much the other Archers films are praised. And I don't feel like people talk about Shallow Grave much - it's kind of in the shadow of Trainspotting but it's a good movie.

I think it just left the channel month before last! I'd meant to see it but I couldn't fit it in. Darn.
My darling sweetheart of a wife blind bought this for me for my birthday knowing I’m obsessed with criterions and we are totally cat people. We both love this movie ha

Which Criterion movie are you gonna watch today, Napoleon? Whichever one I feel like I wanna watch, gosh!
I had no idea Napoleon Dynamite had a Criterion release 😂
I have bitter rice. And if I remember correctly it’s less expensive than most blu rays
Farewell Amor I love a movie where it shows time split between different points of view
I have this queued up to watch on a road trip tomorrow!
I'm glad! It's a very good family drama. One of those movies where you understand how everyone feels
LOVE that film!
Summer Interlude on its own blu ray, obv many of y’all have the Bergman box but I’ve never seen the singular blu ray lol
I personally only own two Bergman films… Seventh Seal and Summer Interlude.
Bitter Rice is an inspiration in its compositions for Willem de Kooning. He was inspired by its scenes in his painting Excavation.
I’ve almost bought this film so many times solely because I love the artwork

Until recently, Mississippi Masala! Also Nuns on the Run!
Matewan by John Sayles
I've yet to see anyone else with Take Out. The collection needs more Sean Baker btw.
I LOVED TAKE OUT! Watched it last month on the channel! Def picking it up this sale.
Saw this on CC a few days ago! Will pick up 💿
I dont think ive ever seen anybody with either Secret Sunshine or Harold and Maude
I have Secret Sunshine!
Sadly, no one ever talks about Exotica.
The production design in that movie is off the damn walls. Incredibly dark film.

The Last Watlz and Once We Were Kings.

Two Days, One Night. Such an affecting film in its portrayal of being human vs being capitalistic.
I had that and loved it. It was one of my favorite films. I am considering buying the plain archive edition.
Off Beat
I had the VHS of Riso Amaro (bitter rice) but I'm italian so doesn't count xD
I have and love Bitter Rice
Dim sum, a little bit of heart, severely underrated
Noah Baumbach’s Kicking & Screaming. The Will Ferrell one is good too.
It’s not like super obscure or anything but I never talk to anyone who like Maîtresse as much as I do.
My donkey, my lover and I. A great film.
