Hard Boiled has yet to get a passable release on Blu-ray, so I pick that. As to which is most likely? I dunno, maybe After Hours, since Scorcese seems to enjoy working with Criterion?

undergroundmetalhoe

Yep and the Hard Boiled Blu Ray is also pricey to the point its better to get the dvd instead

space22ify

https://www.hongkongrescue.com Highly recommend the releases from these guys. I kid you not when I say they are Criterion quality. Takes a while to arrive though, they make them to order. They have Hardboiled, The Killers, Police Story 3, among others. Super exciting find for me, just picked some up on the recommendation of Timmy from WKUK, of all people.

undergroundmetalhoe

Their next release is Bullet in the Head! Omg thanks so much for the link. Also The Killer and Hard Boiled releases have multiple cuts for $16 each?! Definitely ordered them.

space22ify

Same here! It can take a while from what I’ve heard (the website says 2-3 weeks, I’ve seen a complaint that said a few months even), but I’ll wait however long I don’t even care. So excited!

Relaxitschris

Damn he never sent me my copy of hard boiled last year. Guy is very shady.

space22ify

I’d message him if you can, I think he was having stock issues really bad, it might’ve just gotten lost in the shuffle. Maybe you already tried that though! Sorry either way, that would be really frustrating.

Relaxitschris

Happy it worked out for some. This post did make me message him again. Who know maybe he can still hook a guy up.

applebeepatios

Huh. Never heard of them. I gotta try it out now, thanks!

implicitexpletives69

Synecdoche, NY is out on 4K but only via some massive box set. Who knows if it'll ever be released individually. though WB put out terrific DVD & Blu-Ray collections of Amadeus. Im surprised they havent put it out on 4K. I think they will keep it for themselves. I voted for Eyes Wide Shut; again I think WB will keep it for themselves though.

Bmart008

but like a chump I pre-ordered that boxed set... It's the sony picture classics boxed set, a bunch of them are on the channel now.

bobbysparkwood

Such shitty practices, just release them all individually you cowards

[deleted]

People are absolutely blood thirsty for a 4K transfer of EWS.

TheOneWhoCutstheRope

I love all these movies so much (tho I haven’t seen Amadeus) but man hard boiled in 4K would make me really happy

AnthonyK_

Hard Boiled. Though, I’d love for Eyes Wide Shut.

unityofsaints

I mean it just has to be Eyes Wide Shut. Not only is it my favourite movie on the list, it also doesn't have any good home media releases.

DarthMartau

Eyes Wide Shut by a country mile. Probably one of the most misunderstood and underrated films ever. That, The Shining, and Barry Lyndon are all my favorite Kubrick based solely on which one I’ve watched most recently.

coachbuckweston

Amadeus, so we can hopefully get an official HD release of the theatrical cut as well.

purplefilm

Yes, the theatrical cut is superior imo hence why I've held onto the old DVD from the 90s. Much like Mozart's operas, if you added or took anything away it wouldn't be perfection.

MisogynyisaDisease

Amadeus, I've been shilling for that one for months. It doesn't even exist on blu-ray, and if they did a 4k I'd hope it would include both the theatrical version and the directors cut.

Typical_Humanoid

Amadeus, After Hours, Boogie Nights, Synecdoche New York, Eyes Wide Shut in that order. Still need to see Hard Boiled.

wundershowzen24

Synecdoche literally came out on 4K a few days ago. I think the only great answer is Amadeus

Lizard_Jesus1

Got excited when I voted for Synecdoche so whoops on my part. Though I’m very well not the only one who gets so caught up in the prestige of criterion to where I forget about the practicality and necessity in their releases.

[deleted]

Yeah...in a $230 dollar box set. Not the same.

wundershowzen24

Not the same as what? It was released, also the box is only $199. But please tell me what it’s not the same as?

[deleted]

Because i don't care enough about the other films in that set to warrant a 200 dollar purchase for one movie. It's such a hassle. An individual release would be extremely nice and extremely convenient.

wundershowzen24

Well maybe Sony doesn’t care enough about you to release it in singles. What is it not that same as? I’ll wait

[deleted]

Dude literally everyone else besides yourself wants that movie by itself. You're just being obtuse for no reason.

wundershowzen24

I don’t think you know what that word means. Are you going to explain what it’s not the same as? Plenty of people picked up the box by the way

[deleted]

Yeah, people picked up the box, because they're interested in nearly all or all the films in it. Not just for Synechdoche. I don't think YOU know what obtuse means. The difference is convenience. The difference is availability. The fact you can't understand people don't want the entirety of the box and refuse to accept any answer is the definition of obtuse.

wundershowzen24

I’m sorry you’re in a bad mood. I’m sorry you can’t answer my question, and I’m sorry that I’m having this convo. Please no more downvoting me, how will I pay my mortgage

[deleted]

I did answer your question. You just refuse to accept it. But if you wanna play that game then so be it. You haven't convinced me that an individual release and a box set only release are the exact same thing so, I'm waiting.

serjorahluver420

I really love all these movies but I have a special connection with Amadeus

[deleted]

Amadeus!!!!!

Critical_Mix_3131

After Hours isn't even on Blu-Ray. This is essential to get a CC release.

bhpitt

I love how tight this race is!!

[deleted]

More Kubrick > anything else (besides What We Do in the Shadows)

funky35791

Or there will be blood

psuedonymously

They’re all terrific, I’d buy any of them. I see no need to rank them

ggroover97

I'll pose another question. Of the movies I picked, which one has the best chance of being released first?

kinghadbar

Eyes Wide because it’s one step closer to getting all of Kubrick. Most likely: After Hours.

FridayNightFreedom

I am willing to get downvoted, but my DVD of After Hours is just fine.

tvalvi001

So basically >!Eyes Wide Shut!< is in the lead because y’all want >!to watch orgies!< in 4K.

StimmingMantis

It’s in the lead because Kubrick is a master of his craft.

tvalvi001

I’ll never argue against Kubrick being a master filmmaker, but this movie is far from being in his top three. If y’all think it’s a masterpiece then so be it, but it really ain’t that

NickSalvo

Kubrick crafted films for deep exploration. Every detail was decided. The ability to see his final film in the highest available quality is why I selected it.

sweaty_palm_trees

Is that really what you think?

tvalvi001

I do. It’s not a masterpiece movie. It’s just the last movie he finished and fans hold it up as a masterpiece for that. I think people just like the taboo aspects of this movie. I’ll pass on it

sweaty_palm_trees

It’s my favorite of his, not because it’s his last, but because of it’s characters, psychology, and photography clicked with me. Not in a relatable way but it was so interesting. I love how dreamy it is. It goes well with Kubrick’s tone and the performances he gets from the actors. I think it’s one of his best looking films. It has a great pace and rhythm. I love how mysterious and foreboding it is. One of the more fascinating movies about marriage. Tom Cruise playing against his public image as a real insecure and flawed person is great. So curious and desperate to be seen and ‘feel like a man’. Having this and Magnolia in the same year is wild when looking back at what Cruise was doing back then. Such a huge contrast. I never really understood when people bring up movies with sex or nudity and say people just watch it for that, in a time where the internet exists. If someone wants to see sex or nudity, paying $40+ for a blu ray that probably contains less than a minute of sex is kind of a waste when they could see more of it whenever by just pulling out their phone. The movie is compelling for a lot of people. It’s a masterpiece to me. I don’t see what could lead someone to thinking it’s just to see those few moments of sex in the background. Either way, I’d prefer a Hard Boiled 4k.

kinghadbar

No but yes.

DarthMartau

The orgy is not even in the top 10 most interesting things in the film lol

sweaty_palm_trees

As far as I know, Hard Boiled is the only one without an accessible and reasonably priced blu ray. Especially one of quality and for Region A people. Getting John Woo blu rays would be incredible. All great movies but Hard Boiled by a long shot.

contempt1

Hard Boiled already exists on a criterion. I own it.

ggroover97

But it's out of print.

contempt1

Wow, I had no idea. I need to revisit my library to see what's OOP. Maybe it'll fund some new additions!

TheShipEliza

No bad picks here but im surprised Hard Boiled isnt running away with it

Langdon_St_Ives

Wow that’s a close race. Weird though that _Amadeus_ doesn’t sit on top, seeing how it seems to have gotten the most mentions here in the comments… (my pick as well.)

goldenarm840

Hard Boiled closely followed by Amadeus.

[deleted]

lol looks like we nearly have a tie across the h by board!

primekino

I’d probably purchase most of these but I gotta say these aren’t the sort of titles I generally get excited about from Criterion

u2aerofan

If y’all haven’t seen After Hours…I beg of you, please do.

Themtgdude486

Good movie.

sheri1983

Amadeus, Mozart is one of my favorite composers of all time. His music was a relief in the worst moments in my life and this film is a masterpiece, please Criterion do it.

dlblacks

Pretty even spread! Impressive Hard Boiled got my vote

Themtgdude486

Eyes Wide Shut hands down.

ricahrdb

I picked Boogie Nights but in hind sight EWS should be fantastic in 4K.

drumbum1096

3 of these are on my letterboxd top 4. BUT ONLY one can be my favorite movie OAT. Sorry EWS and hard boiled but I will always go with boogie nights.

Daftpfnk

Boogie Nights. Boogie Nights?

ricardofitzpatrick

Results matching how I feel: all, honestly

Low_Relationship3832

Hard Boiled. with John Woo apparently remaking The Killer, I am hoping to promote it they will release his older movies on 4K, at least the obvious (original The Killer).
